      I agree with David Pike, and this goes for ANY of the Armed Services....be willing to wait to get the job YOU want. Do not settle. Most people who cave in and just take what's available end up being miserable, and get out. All the officer stuff is something else altogether. But I will say about that, the service you're in will look at your evals, and recommendations from your CO. Does anyone actually think they will do an outstanding job in a field they hate??? Most humans, don't work like that. Get the job you want, the one you're interested in and will work hard at.....it will show to the folks who write your evals. Then, when you are ready to become an officer there will be some substance to your request.

    Hey man, I was in your shoes a few months ago... After MEPS my recruiter told me the same bad news... that I only had one job on my list that was available, which was a crew chief job (mechanic) and I was super bummed out. So I told her straight up that I'm not doing a job that I don't really want. So she told me to wait a month, and I ended up getting my first pick! Which was RPA Sensor Operator as well. Now it's reserved and I ship out November 14th! Moral of the story, stick it out until you get the job you want. I lucked out by only having to wait a month to get it. Don't let them trick you with that officer shit... that's 4 years of your life.

    I enjoyed listing to you. In 1973 I went in under guaranteed enlistment. Air Force. They don't have that now BUT, I waited over a year for ATC. At the time I was working on my pilots' license, I did NOT MIND waiting. Jump to now. Two sons enlisted after 9-11. One military intel., the other E.O.D.. As a mom, I stressed college before you enlist. They didn't of course..... Our EOD son is still in, LOVES it and will retire in 5 more years. They put him in a really cool commercial for recruiting recently. I wish I knew what you ended up doing, I hope it's waiting and school!! The boys found that where ever they were, there was never a great time or they were in a bad place, to be going to school. You can knock out generals but a good degree ie. engineering will not be so easily had. In fact, it's not possible due to work ect.. Mr. EOD has been all over the world, even if it was just passing through with an overnight. As for recruiters. They are your friendly guy, but they NEED to fill the slots they have, even if they have to lie to do it! We are electrical contractors also. And you ARE TOO SMART for security!!! And for you people reading this, construction is hurting SO BAD for young people. Electrical & plumbing will be taught for FREE and you are FREE to live a normal life able to travel where ever YOU want to go! The stories I could tell about electricians wiring stuff in Iraq!!! People literally be killed in the showers.

      Word to the wise if u go security forces try to go into the 820th or pararescue out of basic. If you can swim 100 laps back and forth without stopping, run 2 mile in 8 mins I believe, you can try out. Otherwise you will be guarding nukes in a wsa. Or waiving cars in the base, or god forbid arrest the same kids every week for stealing from the bx and since daddy is a E5 you under orders to call your flight sgt so they can call his bitchmade father or Karen mother to get the shitbag. Only good part about being seurity forces you can put officers on the ground. DONT COMFUSE YOUR RANK WITH MY AUTHORITY HALT TURN AWAY FROM THE SOUND OF MY VOICE. YEP IN 1999 That's what it was. I always loved the Air Force But hated the way they did things. We had to watch other drill instructors fold a rag at the edge of a bunk bed. They each had a 30 minute presentation to do it and where in competition with each other for some drill instructor hat crap. 35 push ups, 50 situps, 2 mile run in 25 minutes, alot of us walked it. Airforce best food, pretty women, and no pt. Just go into the Army... AIRPOWER SPACE POWER AEF

      Tyler Chasse security forces was my number 1 choice until I took the ASVAB and got a 92 and now it’s not even on my top10. If you qualify for other jobs then you should take those opportunities and run with it, unless you REALLY wanna do security forces I would say rethink your decision. There’s a reason you only need a 36 to qualify for SF

    I'm currently a college instructor teaching math and computer science, and I'm strongly considering security forces actually. My whole point of wanting to change my career and join the military is to receive weapons and combat training. Though I agree securing the base for 11 hours a day would be boring, getting a technical or office position would defeat the purpose of why I want to join the military. I'm tired of tech and desk jobs.

    I was told by the recruiter that you put down 5 jobs at meps, and if they select you, and it’s for one of those other 4 jobs u put down and not your number one job u listed first , there’s no turning back, and there’s no second chance to do the process again, no second chance to appear before another board, if u decline, it’s pretty much over , u get no more chances to be an officer since u declined selection into the airforce, and that no recruiter will ever work with you after that

    At any time the air force had openings in about all jobs but that doesn't mean their accepting people for those it just means others need people more.

  • @dennissvitak148
    @dennissvitak148 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fifth...ALL enlistees SAY that they want to be an office. Less than 1%...WAY less than 1% get that done. I'll explain why. The USAF is not an 8 to 5 job. It is 7-24, with deployments. The VAST majority of all enlisted simply cannot even consider college while they're working shiftwork. I waited until I was 32, and a MSgt, and finally got a job teaching technical training before I was able to go to school full time, and get my degree. Too late for a commission..but I made E-7 at 11 years, and was pretty happy with that.

  • @dennissvitak148
    @dennissvitak148 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Third..ANY prospective enlistee needs to DEMAND that their recruiter take you to an Air Force Base, and VISIT the workcenters of the jobs you're interested in. Take to the youngest person there, with the fewest stripes, and ask questions.

    Yes you should wait! I feel like I may be in the same boat. I want the Medical Laboratory position so badly or some sort of related laboratory science position. My recruiter is a special operations recruiter and he wants to get me into pararescue. I don't really want that... What I'm going to do, and I think you're doing something similar, is put the jobs that I qualify for on my test scores and actually want and that's IT! I'm not going to risk signing a contract for a job that I don't really like! I could do that in civilian life right now and would be just as miserable. My recruiter told me I needed to put 12 jobs down, and only 4 of them to be medical, but screw that. It IS their job, after all, to fill vacancies in the Air Force, so they'll get you into any job you'll sign for. Only sign for what you want or else it isn't worth it!

    I was an Air Force recruiter in the 80's and 90's. Back then most people went into open areas. If someone had come in to my office job locked on only one job I would not have been able to work with them. In fact if i had sent someone down to the MEPS job locked and not willing to go into an open area I would have been reprimanded for wasting the MEPS time. In my opinion why should the Air Force cater to someone who wants only one job when there are other highly motivated applicants ready to get there Air Force career started.

    I served on active duty for more than twenty years, in the Air Force. I have a couple of suggestions. First: do. not. ever. sign. to. enlist. without. a. guaranteed. job. JUST DON'T DO IT. This is your life. If you go in with verbal guarantees, and that's it, I guarantee you will be grounds maintenance in Minot, picking up garbage at ten below. Second..while in BMT, I was told my guaranteed job was no longer available, here's your list of (shitty) jobs you can have. I got stubborn, and said..FINE, release me from my enlistment contract. They left, and came back, and GEE! It came back open. So..that's #2. Don't let them bully you. #3...Security Forces can be excellent. There are two kinds. Security, and Law Enforcement. Security is guarding a flightline, LE is driving around in a car, convincing the Squadron Commander's wife to slow the fuck down. Both can be hazardous.

    USAF '68-'72. During my time they had the draft going on. I really wanted to join the Air Force so I had to be a little bit more hasty in the decision process. If the draft and 'Nam wasn't going on, i would have been more selective in my choice of specialties. My advice is to wait them out. And DON'T enlist for 6 years. Like all branches of service, don't be so "gung-ho"! Remember, once you sign the contract, you become government property, and the air force will tell you what to do, and send you to any place they need you! Don't take to "heart" everything the recruiter is telling you. A lot of it is just hype, and they have their quotas to fill. My opinion, is finish college in the Air Force, and it will be much easier after the first enlistment, to cross train &/or go to OTS. I don't want to come across as negative. Learn to take things in"baby steps". The USAF is a great outfit!

He told me the specialty test for programming is very hard (What's funny is the DLAB for linguist is much harder). I go to meps to verify my score on the 17th, my recruiter likes to tease me with my score because he thought I cheated on 10th grade level math, apparently. So for the most part, this whole recruitment process has me a bit nervous. Also, the confusion of the verification test requires a video that I might make myself, the general perception is that you shouldn't study because if you score higher you have to retake the whole thing. This type of testing puts so much more pressure on people, especially if you did not cheat, and I don't understand why the government would use it.

    Number 2. Security Forces Is ALWAYS on their "HOT LIST" Hot List means the AF needs those NOW!..
    Number 3. Security Forces is the WORST job in the Air Force, highest turn over rate, thats why is ALWAYS on the HOT SHEET
    Number 4. There is NEVER "1" opening in a field. The Air Force IS NOT going to run a 3 month Tech School for "ONE" guy. Tech school has 100 guys or more. The Air Force isn't filling jobs onese twoese at a time. (refer back to Number 1... ALL RECRUITERS ARE LIARS)
    Number 5. No matter what job you get, if for any reason you fail or drop out of your first pick Tech school, you will be sent to Security Forces. Security Forces is full of the dropouts of every other tech school in the Air Force.
    Number 6. The Air Force will turn out to be NOTHING like what you expected. You are most likely to only serve 4 years and get out. That is just the facts.
    My experience in the Air Force showed me, that the only guys that stayed in for 20 years, were people that could get and hold a job on the outside.... DEAD BEATS and DRUNKS... 16 year Staff Sgts, that couldn't get a job at Walmart.
    Get in, try to get a good job, with transferable skills, get experience and whatever school benefits you can, then GET OUT. < Thats just the facts.

Your recruiters hands are tied and he/she doesn’t pick your jobs, the Sq books them and if you only qualified for 3E0X1 out of a whole list of jobs, chances are your ASVAB was somewhat low/ and or Physical Dq’d you from a lot of jobs. Not his problem. He tried to get you in. Not sure if you ended up getting in or not but there is not “waiting for your job” if a recruiter tells you that he or she is not a good recruiter and you as an applicant would need to be flexible to whatever job they can get you.

You are the one who is going to have to serve the four to six years. Do you want to serve in a job you hate? I’ve got the list of jobs I qualify for, but I don’t have an idea of what I want for certain. What is the best way to research and see what I really wanna do? Thanks

    I just swore into the Air Force last week and gave my top 10 job list to my recruiter yesterday. I asked if the job isn’t available that I want can I wait until it is and her response was no. Is she lying to me and can I really wait if I want to?

      If you don't want the job don't take it period, make it clear what job you want, all the best.
