Finally a solution! :) I started to give up saving button reconfigs with retropie's retroarch ("hotkey + X"), but this MAME menu ("TAB") finally saves it! Thank you!
Thanks so much for this! I recently bought on marketplace a bartop arcade connected with an ipac encoder and after installing a new retropie image the controllers were all messed up. Thanks so much!
Just got a new 128gb build, can't wait to get the controllers mapped and do some retro gaming. Always a good idea to backup your image file first before you even put it in the pi. if you assign a control incorrectly in mame ie.P1 to down or something. press enter to select it again then press escape to clear it👍
I have a couple of questions: 1.Do you have to set up the controllers for every Mame game? Or, once you do it for one game (let's sat XMEN) the rest of the games are set up? 2. Does it matter which version you use (US, EUR, JAP, ASIA, etc. I have been getting the ones from Japan since they seem to be fuller)? 3. Can I use my PS3 Controller and follow exactly this pattern? Great videos and great way to communicate!
Hey Prime - awesome video! Do you think this method would work when configuring MAME on a Game Boy Zero? I ask because I'm in the process of building one and would love to have some of these old school arcade classics like Aliens and DoDonPachi on there but I'm not 100% sure if I'd have enough buttons - I'm modifying the Game Boy so it'll use Start, Select, D-Pad, A and B Buttons but there will also be two shoulder buttons (L & R) and X & Y, so essentially it'd be the same as a SNES controller. Do you think this is possible? Cheers man - keep up the incredible content sir!
ETA PRIME Thanks for the reply man, really appreciate it. I may save MAME for my Pi 3-based console project which will happen after Christmas more than likely. I'm going all out on that one - wireless bluetooth controllers, custom case, the works. Really looking forward to it, but the GBZ is what's on the cards right now :D
Hey ETA, I really like the tutorials you have been making. You do a good job explaining the steps for each video you are doing. Easy to follow along with. I am wondering, with all of the different emulators available and so many roms, is there a way to save your game with emulation station? You know, with MAME, the original idea behind the arcade games was to separate us from as many quarters as possible but now, since we can play these games as much as we like for free, it would be great to save and resume where we left off. I was never able to get to the end of Altered Beast before I ran out of quarters and I would love to be able to beat that game now. Thanks.
+thepajc810 most of the emulators have save and load just press "Select + L = save state" And "Select + R = load state" I'm sure about game but i will look into it for you. THANKS FOR WATCHING!
+ETA PRIME one more thing I can't set up a second player controller. as soon as I push any button on the second controller it exits mame. how can I fix this?
I’m playing this on a RetroPie 3B+ arcade 1up cabinet I made and was wondering if there is a way to map an exit MAME button. For all my other emulators pressing the coin and start button allows me to exit into the main menu but idk how to do it for MAME
NEED HELP. While in input general i acidently walked way and my dog walked on my key board changing mu UI Up to NonONE and my UI Down to UP DOWN UP ENTER. Now i have no movement and cannot change any of my settings. Is there a way to override it. Please help. I have no controls what so ever now.
how can i clear a selection on mame general inputs luke i messed up the UP selection so now is set to UP,escape, delete, and multiple time on those buttons how can i rest it to (none) selection so i can remap it? please help thanks
On all ikari Warriors ROMs I need to configure how to shoot in different directions like I walk like I want to shoot less while I'm walking right or vice a versa I need that configuration for Robotron and in other games such like those please
I Know this is an older video but could you answer something for me? I have a raspi 3b+ with retropie4.4 running mame. For some reason I cannot map a joypad key to exit the game and return to the Mame roms screen. Could you help a bit? Thank you in advance
Hey ETAPrime, thanks for the video. I'm on Retropie 4.2 with attract mode. I can get many MAME games to load but can only play on keyboard. When I try to set this up with a joystick the controller isn't being recognized at all. Controller works fine in all other emulators. I've tried the MAME setup menu by pressing tab and escape to reset the control but all it does is quit the game. Any ideas?
I was scrolling through the comments and I haven't seen anyone saying that their TAB button on a keyboard doesn't bring up the menu.. is there anything that would block the tab button from working? I'm using a raspberry pi 3b+ with retropie. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I have a question how would I save my cfg inputs from the menu of the retropi to all my games, I am making a racing cab and I'll give you an example what my problem is, here it is: I have cfg the retro pi inputs in the main menu to work for chase hq but It won't work for other games such as rad mobile etc can u give a reply Thank you. Like your work
Help.. I am not very good with technology. I've bought raspberry pi 3 model b. Full loaded. One controller isn't set up I think. And the mame games are either file not found or buttons must be configured. This video was helpful.. I don't even know how to connect keyboard to pi3 quite frustrating as this was meant to be simply plug and play. Thanks
If you're using mame4all delete your configs file. It should be in this root directory < /opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all/cfg > Once you're in there the file is 'default.cfg'. Delete that and your current (messed up) settings should go back to default.
I’ve got a mame “input” config question. I was updating controller buttons with no problem. I decided to use my controller for the UI buttons as well. So I went to change my “select” demand (which was my enter button on keyboard) to my start button on my controller. I cleared my “select” demand so I could replace it with my controller button. That was dumb because now I cannot “select” any button to change the inputs because I have no “select” (enter) button. HELP!?!?! SMH 🤦♂️
Thank you - this helped me. Question though: if I wanted to setup an small Mame arcade cabinet using a PI3, how could I bypass the ctrl/esc process on the keyboard to get back to the main menu?
For some reason my keyboard work fine on everything else is retro pie but once I’m in Mame arcade only esc and tab work... enter dosent work up and down dosent work... Any ideas?
What if you make a mistake? How do you clear all commands? It's driving me crazy - all videos show how to assign a button, but no video shows how to erase if you make a mistake. I have for example, P1 UP - like ten buttons assigned to it! How do I start over!?! Any help would be appreciated.
to erase your config, use a putty ssh connection to your raspberrypi, goto pi@raspberrypi:~/RetroPie/roms/arcade/mame2003/cfg for example and rm the default.cfg file or a game dependend cfg file like aliens.cfg, pacman.cfg. Then restart your emulationstaion and you should get your default settings back.
After you hit [enter] push [esc]. it will default to none. Then you cant hit [enter] again and assign the [correct button]. pushing [enter] after command you can add more commands to same line. Then down arrow to the next command line.
ETA PRIME is there a way to map a button to ESC to get out of mame and back to the emulationstation? I don't like the idea of having a keyboard. thanks
I’m having difficulty I press enter then a button on my PS4 pad and nothing happens or my keyboard, but when I finish I seem to have a long chain sometimes?
ETA prime I have a question. I built a custom mini cabinet for this build. How do you setup the ipac 2 with launchbox. It’s works fine on my raspberry pi 3 with no issues what so ever. I would rather use retropie but I want ps2, Dreamcast, n64, wii, and Wii U. Big box and lunchbox cannot see the ipac 2 controller unit letting you map the control diagram. It’s frustrating.
Yea, I find the same, I have a USB encoder and it will recognise the stock Arcade1up joystick (since I'm using the wire for my SANWA joysticks), but when it comes to the buttons, I can only map one (the "A" button), and the rest show up like if you were holding the button to skip the analogue joystick part etc.
Any advice to help me - I have my keyboard connected to my RetroPie. I am able to load my rom but TAB doesn't register to get the settings screen. Oddly, ESC works to 'exit or continue', I can also use RETURN on the keyboard. Please help!
What do you do if tab stopped working for it ? It worked once to initially set it up now I need to set up player two and no matter what mame game it is I hit tab and nothing happens .
Hi is there a way u can help me when going in the mame controller setup there's an option called UI select it was changed to none by mistake now I can't renter controller setup when I press tab I cant enter any of the options??? what should I do
what about if i want to turn off a mapping and have no mapping there? for eg: i tried to make coin slot 1,2,3,4 on a single control pad... this worked but i get the coin sounds when playing games now so want to set the config file as default... how do i do that?
I hit input general made all the changes soon as l exit the rom all the canges l made do not work and l have to use only the keyboard again. I am using a wired PS3 controller. Can you help thanks!
How do I Accessing MAME settings when tab key is not working on my on my rii mini keyboard ??? It work on my old keyboard I gave away , but only one of the Tab keys ... This keyboard doesn't . Any idea of commands that may fix this ???
I can configure the start , select (coin) , a,b,c,d button , but for some reasons it doesn't see the up down left right of my control pad , what do you think could be the problem ?
How about when I try to use a PS3 wired controller and when trying to map buttons, some keys don't register when I push them to set them, like the Circle, triangle, and X button do not do anything but the rest do..
I have the same problem, but if you look up at Sam Murray's post above, it looks like you can maybe fix it by plugging a controller directly into the top left usb port and mapping there. I have a wireless ps3 I couldn't get working, but I hope if I plug my wired 360 controller into it I'll be able to map how I want and then use the ps3 after I unplug and restart. Hopefully.
Problem I'm having is I set up the controls, but when I exit the game it doesn't save the configuration. I have to set the controls every single time I play a game. I'm setting the controls in "general". Any advise?
I used 2 different controlles. A wired ttx ps3 style and an 8bitdo nes30 pro. I mapped all the keys and it wont recognize either controllers d pad. Any ideas?
Is it possible to edit that in-game input config for mame outside of running mame? I got an image where UI settings in mame are set to joystick settings only that are not my joystick :) The only thing I can do is press tab but once in the menu I can't move up or down to change settings :( Any ideas?
I love your videos... very helpful man. I have a question though... Is there a way to reset back to default controls in MAME?? I got one of my most favorite games of all time, 720°!!! I messed up the controls something fierce!! PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks buddy!!! >M
if i exit any games under mame the controller maping doesnt save and when i try to boot the rom has a bad rom issue with rom check upside down so i press f2 f3 to fix but that deletes what i have done
I dumped all "Arcade" games in the Arcade folder. All my ROMs use mame 2003 or FBA emulators... I seem to have no problem using Select+Start to exit the game. I may change it though because my buttons aren't labeled and confused friends always just press random combinations of buttons to get things to work and end up exiting the game a lot lol
I'm having a problem when I'm setting up mame config from general or game menus. I'll hit enter to change the key assignment, and it won't accept any input from keyboard or controller. It simply times out and sets it to "None", which means I can't then use that function. Pretty irritating. Perhaps permissions issue with the config file, not sure. I'll post a reply to this comment if I find a solution.
Alright, partially figured it out. Control is now working, but I still can't assign new keybinds. I had my controllers hooked up into a USB hub. The controllers need to be plugged directly into the pi. Controller order is... Top left: 0, Bottom Left: 1. Top right: 2, Bottom right: 3. github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/RetroArch-Configuration
Thanks for this tutorial, however I’m having some bother, every time I switch on my retropie it asks me to configure the controller, then when I go in to play a game, and when I exit the game, it freezes and I can’t select anything with joypad or keyboard, help!
make sure you have enough free space on your sd card to save the configs. I'd recommend going to retropie setup, --> tools/configs --> retroarch --> clear/reset configs. That will erase any settings you had and restore to default. Make sure you have some free storage, and then re-map your controller. That should fix it
I must have removed the tab command from my controller setup in Mame. Now I cannot hit tab to open the controller setup. Where can I get to the controller setup commands to put Tab back in there?
I accidentally meesed up my controller set up for mame. Now I can't even bring up this menu. I can bring up the retroarch menu but no matter where I map button 2 it never works. Any ideas on how to rectify this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
It won't let me use my d-pad on my 360 Xbox controller for left and right only my analogue stick instead and I wanted to use the d-pad ?? Any help would be much appreciated eta prime
Hey there, love your videos!! Got two controllers working on mame perfectly, but for some reason, second controller won't work on other systems such as NES. Got any pointers?
How do you fix deadzone on the controller for mame? I am using mame4all and my analog controler (star wars yoke usb controller) has a dead zone that I want to get ride. On the PC version of Mame you can set the deadzone, cant find anyone to help me fix this issue on retropie. Please help.
Do you have any idea why when I click enter and am supposed to press a button on my controller the input is not read in MAME? The controller works both in game and in emulation station, it's as though the in-game config isn't reading the button input to remap
Thats the ploblem here, i'm playing mortal kombat, and i cant configure this right cause its only written "p1 Button" I dont know where do i configure high kick or high punch and everything else, if i just do it as you are doing, my kick button will be my block button.. everything screwed.. I dont know if you can help me..
My image with AdvMAME worked great with my wireless Xbox 360 controller, but all of a sudden it doesn't. AdvMAME is the only emulator with this issue. Any ideas? TIA.
I've got the same issue, brilliant videos, but when i try to map the cross, circle, triangle and square buttons in the mame internal menus, they do not appear. I have read I have to "Change device_joystick auto to device_joystick raw in the .rc config file" but have no idea how to do it! Please help!
Excellent explanation man , now I can play my mame games on my raspberry pi 3 ☺
you are awesome bro! thanks for all your help on raspberry pi3. i’m gonna let my friends know to follow you when they get there own.
Thank you very much, Sir! Saved my life. Have a good day and keep it coming... Really good videos. Cheers from Brazil.
Great info and easy to follow, thank you.
Just got a new 128gb build, can't wait to get the controllers mapped and do some retro gaming.
Always a good idea to backup your image file first before you even put it in the pi.
if you assign a control incorrectly in mame ie.P1 to down or something. press enter to select it again then press escape to clear it👍
Really useful stuff on this channel. Thanks.
Thank you! Great vid. This tutorial is just what I needed.
Helped me, I was getting tired of playing DK on my keyboard

From game hit tab on keyboard goto other config i think it called then under UI Cancel you can set your escape button there! For Mame
Is there a way to save the configuration as default? Mine seems to reset when i exit and I also need to calibrate it every time.
I would like to know as well
very helpful video... keep it up... many thanks... :)
Can you make a video on how to setup a trackball in retropie please?
Hey Prime - awesome video! Do you think this method would work when configuring MAME on a Game Boy Zero? ive tried mame on the zero and it's slow right now. maybe with a few update it will run at full speed.

+ETA PRIME one more thing I can't set up a second player controller. as soon as I push any button on the second controller it exits mame. how can I fix this?
+Jayson Lorenzon do you set up the second controller in retropie? Just like setting up the first controller?
Yeah when I'm in the input menu nothing happens when I try to configure the buttons. And with the neogeo second player does not work.
thanks for the video, it helped alot.
great video I can't choose from diffrent players on the Simpson's game I can only choose the first one
That has to do with the game itself. It's input specific.
this is amazing help - thank you!
I’m playing this on a RetroPie 3B+ arcade 1up cabinet I made and was wondering if there is a way to map an exit MAME button. For all my other emulators pressing the coin and start button allows me to exit into the main menu but idk how to do it for MAME

Bind UI CANCEL to your start + select keys to exit games. works fine.
Yha but you have to set up keys every time you start game is there way to save the settings?
how can i clear a selection on mame general inputs luke i messed up the UP selection so now is set to UP,escape, delete, and multiple time on those buttons how can i rest it to (none) selection so i can remap it? please help thanks
Same!!!
How do you clear or rest the game specific button selections ?
I am having trouble setting up a Defender usb controller
I think I know a guy that can help you out with that
On all ikari Warriors ROMs I need to configure how to shoot in different directions like I walk like I want to shoot less while I'm walking right or vice a versa I need that configuration for Robotron and in other games such like those please
I meant shoot left while I'm walking right

quick question.....how do you setup your 2 analog sticks if you were playing karate champ for the mame?
Thanks
Anyway to wipe the settings if you mess up? Problem I'm having is that the tab key is not putting me into the settings menu...
Chris Mckernan i have the same problem did you fix it
+william soto haven't found a solution, I just started over
Ok thank You
If you're using mame4all delete your configs file. It should be in this root directory < /opt/retropie/configs/mame-mame4all/cfg > Once you're in there the file is 'default.cfg'. Delete that and your current (messed up) settings should go back to default.
Thank You im going to do it
I’ve got a mame “input” config question.
Do you have to do this for each game or does it save for all you load on the emulator?
How to set up aspect ratio in 4:3?
For some reason my keyboard work fine on everything else is retro pie but once I’m in Mame arcade only esc and tab work... enter dosent work up and down dosent work...
Any ideas?
Do the joysticks and buttons now work for all emulators.. Or just the mame one.
How do I do this for FBA?
What if you mess up?? How do you undo a selection you made?

Alright, partially figured it out. Control is now working, but I still can't assign new keybinds. I had my controllers hooked up into a USB hub.
The controllers need to be plugged directly into the pi. Controller order is... Top left: 0, Bottom Left: 1. Top right: 2, Bottom right: 3.

Having trouble configuring second controller to mame. I'm using two snes wired USB controllers of the same model.
That should fix it
how do you do this with a mayflash F300 arcade fight stick
I must have removed the tab command from my controller setup in Mame. Now I cannot hit tab to open the controller setup. Where can I get to the controller setup commands to put Tab back in there?
