Yes. And if you want to use ‘screenscraper’ as the source you have to register on screenscrapers website and you have to type your ID and password to screenscrapers config.ini file on the Pie. It took me ages to google it and manage to get it done.

This works fantastic, thank you for the awesome video! Note to anyone trying this in 2022: Skyscraper is now in “Optional Packages” but everything else works the same. If you deselect video, it will download nice screenshots in place of video if you’re trying to save space. Also, it mentions creating an account as a line of yellow text when it starts scraping. I highly suggest doing this (it’s not expensive) as it makes the process FAR faster.
Excellent video. A few of the options/steps are slightly different, likely because of added support and updates. For example Skyscraper is an Optional Package now. Also, the Gather from Chosen Resources is now Gather Resources. If you stick to this video and follow closely it will work perfectly.

idk as of when... but skyscraper is only found under OPTIONAL packages now, not experimental. otherwise it doesn't really effect your instructions.

I ran this scraper recently and haven't been impressed. It left lots of blanks when scraping Atari 2500, 5200 and Lynx where Steven Selph's scraper can find them all. I haven't set it loose on the other systems. But it did find a third or so of my Amiga games where Steven Selph's can't find any.
Haven't set it to use anything else other than ScreenScraper so far as the source so might give it another go sometime.

I've been using this scraper for a month or so and it's pretty decent for mame and fba roms using ArcadeDB. For using Screenscraper it's a little buggy. Sometimes you get videos and no marquees and vice versa. Having a registered account in the config helps to scrape better.
This should be a lot better with the newly released Skyscraper 3.1.2. With the older versions, sometimes it would be rejected by screenscraper when downloading some of the artwork files due to their high server load. But I've just added 4 retries per artwork type. So this should now be a lot better. Remember to use --refresh when trying to regrab games that are missing the artwork files.
Hated215 can you explain what you did to enter your login credentials? I tried editing the config.ini through the menu and entered in my login creds and I’m still getting messages indicating that I’m not a registered user.
great guide. i was looking into this, but thought it was a part of the gui. so i am glad to know about the exit of ES and run the SH script. everything now worked out fine.

I've not enabled the videos, as I chose to select the option which allows you to have screenshots + 3D box art. But it looks the part.
Its downloading all the vids, marquees and bogart but its not updating gamelist. Any ideas?

Did you backup your image before you scraped? If so, you could just reload the image.
@@joshgearhart6846 No but I had success following this document here -> www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=86846 and www.reddit.com/r/RetroPie/comments/4oiyuh/unscrapping/. Just located my games.xml file, deleted it then re-scraped my games (took about just over an hour) then I was back in business with the updated games. Following that I did a backup though :)

The menu options have changed now and its not really that clear as to what to choose. Regardless, thank you so much for all of the videos and tutorials. Id be lost without you when it comes to Retropie lol

What is the main difference with other scrapper (like steven selph's scrapper) ? 🤔
From what I've read Steven Selph's Scrapper is no longer supported this scraper replaces that one. Other then that i have seen no difference other then the way you scrape the games like he showed in the video.
I used Selph’s scraper the other day, it’s working fine. Unless I got lucky or something. 🤔

Hey ETAP, Thank you, Love the videos, I have put together a few arcade 1ups now using retropie b +. I came across your videos last year and you inspired me to create my own spin offs. Its brought me a lot of joy, so thank you I appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating these videos.
I have a question for you. If I have scraped roms for my arcades using alternate scrapers, and already created a game list, can I use that game list and say scrape roms individually using skyscraper through the emulation station menu? Reason I ask is I have went in usings wins scp and created my own descriptions, images, videos and so fourth. I'm afraid I'll lose my custom data. I'm sure the media will still be there, it's the descriptions I'm more so concerned about. I'm OCD like that, lol. Thanks for your time in advance.
Which scraper do you use these days? Is this it, or Steven's?
I love options dont get me wrong but Universal XML Scaper seems much easier if you have access to a computer and it has an actual UI and you can do it remotely. This would be good if you dont I suppose. Great video though.

I am not having any luck with this scraper. After scraping and generating the list at reboot it messed with the controller layout with no start button to reconfigure the controller. Thankfully I have a backup of the image of before. Trying to scrape art and info for pbp files in my psx folder.
Skyscraper never messes with your controller configs - it doesn't even know about them (there is literally nowhere in the code where it messes with anything but the ES game list files), so this has to have been caused by something else.
Skyscraper 3.1.2 was just released today fixing a few bugs in the API of screenscraper. This might help get you better results if you are interested in giving it a try again.

Not sure about on all other pies but on the 3b+ you have to type it in exactly like you see it on the screen. With $HOME.
I know it's an old video but when I try to generate games list the script starts then the pi reboots itself.

So how do you revert to basic build if you have things like Skyscraper and BezelProject installed. If you back up your build with those on it, and say skyscraper becomes part of the retropie update, and you want to install the "official" script, can you just uninstall those scripts and reinstall them?

It doesn't play any videos or sound when I enable the OMX player.
and when I disable the OMX player I only get sound but no video either

Hey eta your vids are great but i have a problem with scraping. This is the 3rd or 4th craping vid of yous that i watched and followed and yet my games are not scraping still blank,..any ideas or help would be great thanks man
PresD81 same is happened to me. Half the information listed in the menu is missing after updating.
Great video but ALWAYS back up your disc prior to updating any of these scripts etc. luckily I had about a month ago because when I followed ETAPrimes instructions it froze and said it couldn’t update blah blah blah… when I rebooted I could no longer access retropie menu. I got pretty scared because I’ve put so much time in this emulation station.
Please make an update to this video. I watch every Raspberry Pi vid you up. I've been at this for about four hours and cannot figure out how to scrape video snaps from Skyscraper, even after registering with the website and messing around with the config.ini file. Please help man. :-( It works for the first ROM but then quits because it thinks I'm not registered. I've done my research on this issue but nothing works. Thanks for reading this at least. Like I said I love your vids. I wouldn't write this if I weren't at my WIT'S END.

most of my games haven't worked. Would this be because the game names have like (U) or (J) after the name?
I have seen that some retropies are showing box art first and few seconds later shows the video preview. I loved it. Could you do a tutorial for this?
This command would be specific to the theme you are using in EmulationStation. Here is a snapshot of similar code that would need to be included in your theme's "theme.xml" file. imgur.com/a/rE8yCwQ The important part is under the video section where it says "0.7" You can change the 0.7 to any amount of time you want the theme to wait before the video pops up, replacing the screenshot or box art
This is great.....you’re a go to on information for me regarding the pi. Did a scrap with skyscraper to include videos.....but would like to go video less.......how...after a video scrap, do I change back to skyscraper without videos? Do I have to rescrape everything? Help PRime!

If you make a video about skyscraper, you should also do another one with Skraper. It's easy as well, even easier, if you want more options. It's a Windows program with quite some options.
In my experience it can handle folders, which skyscraper didn't do, when I tried it. On the other hand skyscraper can use more online databases as source whereas Skraper only uses screenscraper.fr, which is fine for 99 % I guess. The only ROMs if didn't find were some more obscure ones.
Another thing I like about Skraper, it scrapes the ROMs either on the Pi directly or on your PC.
Thanks! That looks incredibly easy. Is there a video on how to hide the daughter/clone files from your set? My next task is to have only one version of each game shwoing instead of like 5.
You can hide them I guess by putting them in a folder that is named like the game you want to play. I mean put the clone files in one so in the first menu the will appear as one

1st time attempting to scrape. I thought I followed your tutorial exactly but after 3 attempts I’m unable to generate any artwork/videos. By all accounts it looks like it was scraped successfully but when I reboot I get a warning to make sure ES isn’t running. Didn’t see that in your end. Appreciate any help. Thanks!

@FUNKYSPECTRUM what theme are you using? Some themes don't use video as main source. I use Comic theme & have videos working for every system except Dreamcast & Sege Megadrive/Genesis I just can't figure out
Thanks Prime ... will sky scraper pick up the roms that are in folder structures? Likewise, will it drill down into nested directories for a system? For example I have SNES games sorted into folders based on genre and translation.

The command after you type f4 will not work for me. I have carefully looked over the letters and it says no file or directory. What Ann I doing wrong?

I followed each step but after the sudo and the skyscraper settings, I don't have the "Gather for All systems" or "Chosen sytem". I see that the version on your video is 3.0.5 and I have 3.3.0

sander sepp you can change splash screen from the emulationstation options menu.
If your on the latest update you should see splash screens on the options menu
I got game descriptions but no video and none of the other scrapers will work at all.
Only some of mine worked (Atari, Gameboy, GBA, FBA ) but NES, SNES, N64, Mega Drive didn't. I made sure to follow the steps 100% and tried to scrape only NES and create the library and still a no go. I was watching the code as it scrapes and it lists the game name and states could not find. Any suggestions?
How do I get retropie to find and use my local art? I'm not a fan of entering everything manualy. There is a menu setting to turn this feature off. But honestly it hasn't used any of my images I already have.

This is great......except I got a bunch of European region box art, which is weird. I found another resource that says we're supposed to add "Skyscraper -p megadrive -s screenscraper -region us" but I can't figure out where I'm supposed to add it.

Are you trying to type it all at once?
first type

press enter then type

if you download 'videos' for your systems, you should know they take up a substantial amount of space, just for 600+ atari 2600 games it used over 500 megabytes.... half a gig! for JUST the video! soooo for the 15,000+ games i have it should roughly take up as much as 15gb for 15,000 - 35 second game play videos.

I’m not sure what the problem with this scraper is. All of my ROMs were scraped with ease on other scrapers on previous versions of ES, this scraper will not generate any art work, just wheels. Not on the GUI or command line. I’ve adjusted every setting, renamed ROMs, nothing... it won’t even scrape from local. Is there an issue with this scraper in which I’m unaware of?

Hi I have a question I followed the tutorial but when I come back to the menu and I click on an emulator, retropie freeze
I did everything but when I went past the reboot screen and typed “exit” then we booted once I reloaded.. no cover!

Have tried to do this using a laptop with Ubuntu and Retropie and snap videos do not work with either scraper or skyscraper following instructions in both ETA Prime videos. Video files do not exist in game Metadata. Does anyone know if there is something I am missing?

Unfortunately you only get about 2 or 3 scrapes in before you get shut down and booted out unless, of course, you pay in and get a password 🙄
I'm having an issue where the game data gets offset by one or more so the data is useless because every game shows the wrong game in the list and opens a different game than listed. Seems to scrape but even in the text while running, it is showing the title mismatched. So far the only scrapers that work properly for me are the built in scraper but I want video previews which that does not do so kind of annoying. Probs going to try and scrape on PC and manually transfer over or something
Is there a way to only scrape games that haven't been scraped before? Whenever I hit "generate game list" my old xml file is replaced and all the changes I did to it are changed back again.

I installed skyscraper and followed the steps you did in this video but especially screenscraper.fr server is very slow and not stable..often getting no response from server. I have ten thousand roms (for educational purposes), started scraping last week and it is still scraping...Not recommending bulk scraping, suggest scraping for one emulator at a time..
Well, I followed the steps in this video to a T but it only provided about 65% of my 40 MAME games with a video. The rest just show a black square 😕
Google "how to use skyscraper commands" it's a more customizable way to do it. You get stuff from multiple place and put it together
