Love your work. I did all the steps for V4 but still the button configuration is all over the place. V3 worked perfect thou. I use a PS3 n PS4 controller works fine on V3.

I know this is a old posting but I hope someone is still watching it.Very good information for us new users. I am having a problem I cannot figure out, I have tried different things. I am not sure what to do. I have roms loaded into my files etc. What my problem is, I click to play a game, it tries to start then freezes or goes back to the menu screen. I try different game it doesnt start but goes back to menus listing all the roms in that get, IE, SNES, or nes, etc. ANY idea what I may need to do. AS I SAY I am a complete newbie so please explain it like I am a 5 year old.. Thank You

Hi MLP, these setups doesn't fix the controller in the VERTIPIE image. I've tried all methods above but still no luck. Everything works fine in the ES, but while playing games, the only working button is "Y". I can't even go back to the previous menu using start select. I know I'm behind and I'm not a technician but if I delete retroarch is there a reason I wouldn't be able to update from source? My controller isn't the problem I lost all my important functions on my keyboard (esc, f4, f1 ect.). Please help!
I'm having a issue a set my hot key binds for pause and frame skip x and z and c on my sega controller and accidentally saved it because I was testing frameahead running and now every time I change those commands back to original it just goes back to how i dont want it every time I reset the system or try to save the commands back to z and c which is messing up me being able to play..thanks in advance

Ok like the video cause it did help somewhat. But, still cant get the directions on joystick to work. Or P2 anything. Use the USB encoders that read as dragonrise N64. But, arcade joysticks. Trying to work in arcade, Mame, final burn, and Atari. Best I get are the buttons doing things, but no directions/start/coin. So frustrated.
Hello quick question I went to the ES Themes and installed the Comic one and rebooted my Pi 3 then half of the names and images on the main system select screen have white boxes, and missing text and images on the game select page, and also the font for the controls at the bottom is messed up as well. Any suggestions how I can fix?

Have the same issue... I could not solve properly but find out something at least you are able to play. I have one very basic usb controller maybe only 1usd chinese copy...no name so small...I set it to port 0 as 1st main and xbox360usb controller to 2nd player in port 1.. ...cheap usb is controlling menu, coin and go back to emulation station desktop.... and playable for 1 Player... in the game when I hit the start button of XBOX360 controller it enters the game as 2nd player and works properly..( without analogs !! - only D-Pad)....recently saw the video and tried everything but will try to erase the all and install from bin later on.
So I have had an issue with my Keyboard in ES & Games. Keyboard basically only functions when I am in one of the blue config screens (or any backend) but does not function on the ES menus, in Games, etc. Will that be resolved with a reset of the ES input config, or does that only reset my controller inputs?
Justin Doty You have to setup your keyboard in the ES control config for it to work in games and ES menus. If you dont it will only function in terminal and config/setups and what not.
Ah, so in other words it was already working as intended ;) I got stuck in colecovision and another system and had to hard boot and figured there was something I missed along the way. Thanks for all your work and videos like these.
Running into a new problem which I'm thinking is some sort of config issue, so i figured I'd comment here again. For the past couple days my when I exit out of an emulator, I am faced with a black screen - as if the UI has suddenly gone completely missing. I can press start to bring up the normal menu, and select if I am still in a system for that set of menus, and i can click through blindly and launch emulators, so ES is still running. But even changing UI doesn't bring it back, only restarting ES. Any thoughts? I was looking at the forum but was having trouble figuring out the right keywords to search for this issue.
I’m trying to map an N64 controller and there are some buttons it does use. Like trigger buttons and the select button. How do I skip those when mapping the buttons?
could be a power issue, adding usb peripheral means more power draw, if you have a 500 mAh adapter that might push it over the edge could also be a shortcircuit in the wire

Reginald Alberto In Emulationstation goto retropie configs, then to retroarch. redo your inputs there, and redo the hotkeys. enable hotkey as select and exit retroarch as start. should be good.
I am new to using Retropie 4.4 on a raspberry pi 3b+. I can't get the resulation correct no matter how many videos I watch. I have a 50"4K TV and I have tried so many of the resulation settings and still every single game looks bad. I do not know how everyone gets the resulation so good. I look at all of these videos and the picture quality on all of the games look amazing. Can anyone give me any info on what the settings should be for a good picture quality?

You can still copy the roms to your computer via network connection with winscp like he show, then choose basic install from the script, or you can download retropie and flash it onto your sd card. Whenever messing with your retropie configurations, you should ALWAYS back it up.
Any clue why mame won't let me use 2nd player?.. have 2 diy arcade joysticks hooked to rasberry pi.. all other like Snes,Sega etc etc work fine..Mame let's me start player 2 but player 1 joystick controls both at same time.. any help would be awsome.. thanks
same issue with mine... I tried everthing but could not solve... If you already downloaded ready images as me probably you are using the image made for arcade stick already configured and burned into image file...... so your 1st and 2nd controllers are plugged and act as same port #0 ...

My problem I have right now is easily setting up different kinds of controllers at the same time. I have mad cats fit sticks for first 2 players and snes controllers for players 3&4 but when I go through initial config it only sets up the mad cats even though it detects 4 controllers at initial config.

How do you fix the controller issue on a retropie box? I'm not using a computer. I don't see any of those options on my menu about retropie setup? It's an older layout
Retropie can be flaky: Joypad configuration hanging on the final stage; some emulators running like garbage such as SNes nd 32x; weird menu things like the shutdown not appearing just restart; joypad input errors, weird stuff. No problems in Blast 16, but that's limited to sega. It can be improved definitely.
Super frustrating, cannot get both controllers working on my retropie. Have to be a computer hacker to deal with this thing. It used to work fine, but sometimes controller one works, sometimes controller two works, never at the same time anymore. Please help.
Thanks for the video it's really helpful. I wonder if you can help with an issue I'm having... Recently bought a pre set up raspberry pi, plugged in, and all was good. Played games with SNES style controllers and all fine, including hotkeys. Then bought an N64 Style controller, configured that, and all was well again. Today I tried going back to the SNES controller, but whatever I do, the hotkeys just aren't working (so can't exit / save / load games). Any advice would be very gratefully received! Thanks
Actually just noticed when I start a game it is saying in the bottom left corner that I am using a NES style controller whereas I am actually using a SNES Style. This explains why it no longer seems to be recognising all the buttons. No idea how this happened, as all I did was switch controllers. I've tried tricks in this video, but none have sorted it. Sorry to be a pain, but if you have any ideas that would be great.
And what if my SELECT (coin) switch still doesn´t work after this troubleshooting?. I know the USB controller works because I can map everything, test it windows and all buttons work but it just wont "count coins" for some reason and so I cannot play any games at all. I have a raspberry 3, retropie cabinet for 1 player only. I have also done the "clear/reset input configuration" and the "reset emulation station" procedures. Any suggestions?

Hi, i tried the reconfigure on my gamepads. Gamepad 1 is okay, but gamepad 2 always gets things inverted. As an example for dpad up i press up and it chooses axis 1-. Would anyone know how to fix this? I have checked my connections 4 x and all seem to match
So all the controls work for all my emulators (snes, sega, etc) but I have an emulator for arcade games called "Arcade" and all the buttons work when in the game but the joystick does not. Hi. How to your restore a controller deck to its original settings? I screwed my whole configuration, including the player’s one and two buttons and the coin buttons. I’m currently running on Raspberry pi 4.5 on retro pi. I can’t even exit games using my top row buttons, like I’ve done before.
Mine won't reapond to the joysticks but will respond with the controller up until I try to add coins or actually start the game then nothing responds... I thought the card was the problem, replaced it and same issue...will one of these methods fix that?
If your controller isn't working how do you navigate through all these menus etc to do this!!! It's chicken and egg scenario! Controller not working so cannot navigate to chose options to make it work! This retropie stuff is so convoluted and confusing!
The config screen looks completely different for me. I'm running retropie on ubuntu, a few years later. I can't even figure out how to navigate the menus and everything is in a different place

Awesome video. So I ran into issues last night on my Pi4 8GB ram. Originally I had my Xbox 1 controller setup wireless. I did the steps necessary and connected it successfully through bluetooth. So last night I got tired of the bluetooth randomly losing sync for a split second and decided to go the wired route. When I connected it via USB, everything worked fine in EmulationStation navigating. It wasn't until I got into the emulators that I noticed all the bindings were out of whack. I tried the steps from the video and no luck. I went ahead and reset all the control configurations again like from the video, connected back my wireless Xbox1 and it worked normal again. There's something up with it wired...same controller. Anyone else experience that? Very bizarre. I will try an Xbox 360 wired next and see what the results are.

Great tutorial! thanks, I seem to have a calibration problem on one of my joysticks it has an axis drift. I've tried everything even replaced the hardware. Still the same Axsis drift problem. Is there a calibration menu or something I'm missing?
Can't access "now loading" set up on any emulator by pressing A. The button got deconfigured so I can not change anything in the launching menu before playing a rom. I am using RetroPie 4.3 on a Raspberry Pi 3 B. Any idea why this happened and how to solve it? My controllers are 8bitdo NES 30 Pro via bluetooth and a XBOX 360 wired controller.
I have issues using Nintendo Wii Pro Controller with V4. When playing arcade; select and start allows me to exit but left trigger adds credits and right trigger starts the game. When playing PS1 right trigger enables right trigger function plus start function. I followed the instructions but have not found a solution.
i ended up editing the trigger buttons for L2 and R2 by hand in the config file of the controller.. as Emulationstation detected and configured them weirdly when i pressed them.. after setting it right in the config file they worked like they should... but their sensitivity is low so i was just about to look up (stumbled on this) how to change that accordingly too
Hmmm... I appreciate the work. And, clearly it is on me for misunderstanding... ...But how does one make "FIXED" Controls? If it can recognize the controller name, it seems as though we would be able to create default buttons for the system to recognize, voiding a need to set up Every Single TIme I am a noob, so apologies if I missed it. maybe a little off topic, but do you know why certain things may be laggy on some images? specifically kodi, and psx? on all my own images that i built from scratch everything is smooth sailing, but i've tried some of yours and everything stock thats already on there works great, but then throwing on kodi, almost nothing works, and with psx i'm getting crazy sound glitches and lag. any help would be appreciated!
So dumb question but I am having issues backing out of a game. What am I missing here? So on my ps3 wireless controller, when I push start and select at same time it wont back me out of game. What do I need to do?
ive followed every step of this video exactly to a T. No matter what i do, the control do not work in attract mode. I can delete every file in this video and re-do it in ES but once i go to attract mode, the controllers do not work. Using official x360 controllers and wireless adapter. They work perfect on your 128gb images.
Total Pi and Retro noob here, so bear with me. Added some games to test and all seemed well. Go in to play them and the controls are wonky. Left makes me go right. AB XY Sel Start not working. I went into emulation station and config/tools and did a reset but still the issue persists. Also controller doesn't work anymore once I go back to the retropie set up menu. Thanks in advance for any hints or help.
Love the content of the V4 16GB but even after doing all this three "fixes" I' m unable to use my controller or even the keyboard properly, besides the menu navigation :( So sad... is there any other solution since I really like this image?

Thank you. Without this, I never would have gotten my controllers fixed. After update and upgrade, I ended up having multiple controller saves in the joypad folder. Going through all of your steps made the game playable again. Thank you. Now if only I could get my HDD remounted properly...

Today I tried going back to the SNES controller, but whatever I do, the hotkeys just aren't working (so can't exit / save / load games). Any advice would be very gratefully received! Thanks
Actually just noticed when I start a game it is saying in the bottom left corner that I am using a NES style controller whereas I am actually using a SNES Style. This explains why it no longer seems to be recognising all the buttons. No idea how this happened, as all I did was switch controllers. I've tried tricks in this video, but none have sorted it.

And what if my SELECT (coin) switch still doesn´t work after this troubleshooting?. I know the USB controller works because I can map everything, test it windows and all buttons work but it just wont "count coins" for some reason and so I cannot play any games at all. I have a raspberry 3, retropie cabinet for 1 player only. I have also done the "clear/reset input configuration" and the "reset emulation station" procedures. Any suggestions?
Have you (or anyone else here) ever had controller lag in your retropi? I'm trying to play NES Punch Out and SNES Mario Kart on my pi, but the delay in my controller makes it almost impossible. Any help would be much appreciated
Hi, i tried the reconfigure on my gamepads. Gamepad 1 is okay, but gamepad 2 always gets things inverted. As an example for dpad up i press up and it chooses axis 1-. Would anyone know how to fix this? I have checked my connections 4 x and all seem to match
So all the controls work for all my emulators (snes, sega, etc) but I have an emulator for arcade games called "Arcade" and all the buttons work when in the game but the joystick does not. Ive searched high and wide all over the internet for solutions but no luck. Can someone help me? Its a bartop arcade..How do I configure the arcade emulator differently?
Hi. How to your restore a controller deck to its original settings? I screwed my whole configuration, including the player’s one and two buttons and the coin buttons. I’m currently running on Raspberry pi 4.5 on retro pi. I can’t even exit games using my top row buttons, like I’ve done before.
Mine won't reapond to the joysticks but will respond with the controller up until I try to add coins or actually start the game then nothing responds... I thought the card was the problem, replaced it and same issue...will one of these methods fix that?
If your controller isn't working how do you navigate through all these menus etc to do this!!! It's chicken and egg scenario! Controller not working so cannot navigate to chose options to make it work! This retropie stuff is so convoluted and confusing!
The config screen looks completely different for me. I'm running retropie on ubuntu, a few years later. I can't even figure out how to navigate the menus and everything is in a different place
Would these steps help if I : updated the retro pi script and received a message that said joy2key could not be updated now my buttons and joystick no longer respond🤔

my bluetooth controller works in retropie menu but no other systems. (only the keybouard works in games) will this fix it?

Awesome video. So I ran into issues last night on my Pi4 8GB ram. Originally I had my Xbox 1 controller setup wireless. I did the steps necessary and connected it successfully through bluetooth.
So last night I got tired of the bluetooth randomly losing sync for a split second and decided to go the wired route. When I connected it via USB, everything worked fine in EmulationStation navigating. It wasn't until I got into the emulators that I noticed all the bindings were out of whack. I tried the steps from the video and no luck. I went ahead and reset all the control configurations again like from the video, connected back my wireless Xbox1 and it worked normal again. There's something up with it wired...same controller. Anyone else experience that? Very bizarre. I will try an Xbox 360 wired next and see what the results are.

Great tutorial! thanks, I seem to have a calibration problem on one of my joysticks it has an axis drift. I've tried everything even replaced the hardware. Still the same Axsis drift problem. Is there a calibration menu or something I'm missing?
Can't access "now loading" set up on any emulator by pressing A. The button got deconfigured so I can not change anything in the launching menu before playing a rom. I am using RetroPie 4.3 on a Raspberry Pi 3 B. Any idea why this happened and how to solve it? My controllers are 8bitdo NES 30 Pro via bluetooth and a XBOX 360 wired controller.

I have issues using Nintendo Wii Pro Controller with V4. When playing arcade; select and start allows me to exit but left trigger adds credits and right trigger starts the game. When playing PS1 right trigger enables right trigger function plus start function. I followed the instructions but have not found a solution.
I have the same problems with MLP V3 and V4 image. Interesting, didnt anybody try this images or we are chosen ones for extreme problems :)

Don't use those cheap Ps3 controllers u get with retro pie, they're crap! Definitely not worth $25ea what a rip off smh 🙄
i ended up editing the trigger buttons for L2 and R2 by hand in the config file of the controller.. as Emulationstation detected and configured them weirdly when i pressed them.. after setting it right in the config file they worked like they should... but their sensitivity is low so i was just about to look up (stumbled on this) how to change that accordingly too

maybe a little off topic, but do you know why certain things may be laggy on some images? specifically kodi, and psx? on all my own images that i built from scratch everything is smooth sailing, but i've tried some of yours and everything stock thats already on there works great, but then throwing on kodi, almost nothing works, and with psx i'm getting crazy sound glitches and lag. any help would be appreciated!

So dumb question but I am having issues backing out of a game. What am I missing here? So on my ps3 wireless controller, when I push start and select at same time it wont back me out of game. What do I need to do?
ive followed every step of this video exactly to a T. No matter what i do, the control do not work in attract mode. I can delete every file in this video and re-do it in ES but once i go to attract mode, the controllers do not work. Using official x360 controllers and wireless adapter. They work perfect on your 128gb images.
Total Pi and Retro noob here, so bear with me. Added some games to test and all seemed well. Go in to play them and the controls are wonky. Left makes me go right. AB XY Sel Start not working. I went into emulation station and config/tools and did a reset but still the issue persists. Also controller doesn't work anymore once I go back to the retropie set up menu.

Thank you. Without this, I never would have gotten my controllers fixed. After update and upgrade, I ended up having multiple controller saves in the joypad folder. Going through all of your steps made the game playable again. Thank you. Now if only I could get my HDD remounted properly...

How do you put it in “full” mode? I have it on “kiosk” and the Konami code is not working on my raspberry pie 3. Any suggestions?
