  • The Commodore 1541 disk drive is a classic. A heavy, prone to overheating classic. In this video I walk through some modifications to reduce the weight by almost 3 pounds and also significantly reduce the amount of heat it generates.
Power supply & where I get them:

"Is it heavy?" "Yeah." "Then it's expensive, put it back."
    .
I kind of like electronics with heft. It's somehow more satisfying than the air-filled bits of plastic around today. I'd leave the RF shielding in. That said, the heat reduction is a huge winm so the old power supply needs to go.
    .
I used to hate RF shields, but now there's so much RF smashing around our houses that sneaks into other things, I kind of appreciate the shielding that went into things before the FCC gave up.

    Hi.
1st, thank you for the video. Very informative and I liked the schematics observations.
2nd, you should normalise the sound level between segments captured with different mics. IT's really annoying when the sound is quiet and then it goes loud.
3rd, could you put the link to the next video in the description, please.

Hey, thanks for this. I am new to the C64 world, and I do have a working 1541. I have a bit of experience with modifying electrons, but I am still consider myself new to it. Do you have a website or photos that show and explains the changes you made? I am interested in doing this as I do know that this is an issue for these old drives and I would love to correct it.

Hey, watched this a lot and I tried it myself, and I am not getting any power to the board. I have Pin 2 of CR1 going to VR1 and PIN 3 of CR3 jumpered to VR2 exactly as is in your video, and I have pins 3 anbd 4 fo CR1 jumpered, and I am using the same power supply as you. Black in Load, white in neutral, I still have the green on the metal frame for ground. I have the 12 volt line going to +v2, the 5 volt line going to +5V and ground going to ground. The LED on the power supply comes on, but I am not getting anything to the board. I am not sure what is wrong at this point, any tips?

@@robertsissco2439 Do you have a volt meter? I would start by testing the RT50B gives the correct AC (110 or 240 depending on your country) and DC (5 and 12 and 0 ground).[ Disclaimer do not attempt if you do not know what you are doing as incorrect use may result in electric shock.]

I wasn’t there a way to modify the 1541 with a parallel cable that was much faster than the serial cable?
