Adding HDMI Output to the Commodore 64

In this video I remove the RF modulator from a breadbin 64 and replace it with a composite to HDMI converter. This gives me an HDMI output directly from the 64 without needing external parts. I own a cheap thermal camera and thats why I decided to replace both MUX and also the ROMS because they're creating a lot of heat, now with the new ICs they're barely visible in the thermal cam. also each ROM I replaced draws 50mA less of current what makes it 200mA in total (less), thats not just reducing the heat ist also better for the PSU. When I was about to replace the power connector to the C64 one I found that my board does not have all the holes for it, so I disassembled the connector to remove the unused ones and had to drill a hole into the board, but it goes right into a place where it has to go anyway, so no big deal. Also before I got the new C64 PSU I only connected 5V to the Plus4 and everything works fine, the 9V is only used for the Tape but I don't have one.

I wonder where that barn was located for this find? Many decades ago I donated a trailer load, (big trailer) of my commodore collection which included three working and restored sx-64s. Many c-64s vics and lots of drives cassets and tons of original gamed, some still new in the boxes. If it were anywhere close to Modoc Indiana this was probably at one time my sx-64. The collector was a very active computer collector of all brands but liked the commodores. He was also a member of a local C-64 users club. Enjoy!

Which EProm did you use? I think it's a 128k but it has 28 pins. I have some 264k which have 32 pins so technically I guess I could make an adapter but would prefer to have the right 28 pin chip.

Just subscribed. No clue, how I’ve missed your channel so far! Hacker-brained you are! Love the idea of gutting that converter and making it a FINALLY useful thing to have in place of the RF noisemaker. The kawari is not commodore, I see it as a step too far away. Thank you for the video! I will jump right on this mod on my heavily modded breadbin C64.

Hi. Thank you for the video. This mod is really interesting because I don't have to drill the case. I will have to check the 1541 video to understand how you moded that one. The LED is a brilliant idea! Is it not a bit too high, to have 5.25V on the 5V rail? (At least, according to the C64 wiki).

I will do the same with a C16. The PCB of the C16 is a bit smaller, so I gonna keep the RF-Modulator. And I try to use the HDMI-Connector directly without any adaptor-cable. And the next step will be integrating a SD2IEC-Module into the same case. Thanks for the technical details.

Hi. 1st, thank you for the video. Very informative and I liked the schematics observations. 2nd, you should normalise the sound level between segments captured with different mics. IT's really annoying when the sound is quiet and then it goes loud. 3rd, could you put the link to the next video in the description, please.

Nice work! Only ever owning a Vic-20 and a C64 which for the most part have the same keyboards, it's nice to see the differences (and similarities) with the pet. I am guessing these are also Mitsumi mechanisms? I know Commodore used Mitsumi all the way through the Amiga years. The Amiga keyboards are the ones that I have noticed quite a few failures in the conductive pads that are part of the stems. I have had many fail on my A500 keyboards, much more then on my C64s I have repaired. This seems like a good solution. Keep up the good work.

Well... I had a comment and I guess TH-cam didn't like it. Long story short... great restoration video. I went through a similar process last year with an SX-64 that was stored in an unlined shed near the ocean. The I/O PCB was damaged beyond repair so I (together with a PCB engineer) created a replica. Other mods were fitted like a LCD screen (and powered speaker), JiffyDOS, a dual color power/activity LED in the floppy drive and I had the chassis electroplated in gold zinc. Spent way too much money but I've ended up with a very nice machine.

When you buy game for Commodore 64 you have it and you play it for life. When you buy game for PS5 you can not even play it washout constantly updating OS and downloading game updates, and it will never be truly your game nor you will be able to play it once developer and Sony decides it it old game and shut the server down.
