    Fanatec's ClubSport Universal Hub has been around for quite now, and while it serves its purpose well, it's not exactly the prettiest thing to look at unless hidden behind a larger wheel and can be quite clumsy to work with.
    Today, Fanatec introduced their new CSL Universal Hub which features a clever sliding design allowing it to be used with a wide variety of wheels with either 50 or 70mm stud patterns, and with a significantly lower price tag than the ClubSport Universal Hub, so let's take a closer look!

    My CSW 2.5 and BMW Wheel literally just arrived today and unboxing both the wheel base and the wheel itself i love the feel of everything its really impressed me and im coming from a CSL Elite which i was impressed with at the time but the clubsport stuff just feels like its in a completely different league. I was thinking about a DD1 Wheel base but that would of meant having to buy a complete new rig as well which would of added up to more than i was willing to pay really. Im just waiting on my V3 Pedals to arrive with the performance kit and then ill be ready to start racing again.

  • @Crash_Knight
    @Crash_Knight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think this was a perfect addition to the Fanatec produce line. It fills one of the few voids I felt they had.
    Unless you bought the Clubsport hub, you were locked out of the option of using their lineup of rims, or aftermarket rims. And since the Clubsport hub costs so much, it limits people on a budget to their all in one rims. Not saying they're bad, but its nice being able to get their full selection of rims without having to spend $400+. Now I can get a GT rim for $270 instead, and get the clubsport hub down the line if I want to.

    • @mochannel25
      @mochannel25 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is a great addition as well. I just don't like the way it is done with those cheap shifters and that plastic quick release. I think they should rather have made it 200$ and improved in those two points.

      even at that pricepoint a better shifter setup should have been possible. Just look at the Mclaren wheel. It has magnetic shifters and is an entire wheel, not just a hub for just 50€ more. To be honest this product just isn't worth it's price. It's a really bad value proposition. Logitech Shifters are less flexy than those are.

  • @chrisnobleracing
    @chrisnobleracing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The clubsport metal QR should have very little flex in it when you use the bolt. If yours does still have flex it’s actually the small bolts inside he shaft on the wheelbase side that need tensioning.

  • @aaronperelmuter8433
    @aaronperelmuter8433 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To all who continue to recommend using the screw to reduce flex with the Clubsport quick release, at least on all versions of CSL Elite and all version of Clubsport wheelbase, the threads are only present in the shaft only, NOT in the quick release also. Therefore, the screw is not in any way whatsoever tightening the quick release onto the shaft because doing it up tighter does not pull the quick release more snuggly onto the wheelbase shaft. At best it simply pushes on the black, outer quick release sleeve onto the inner, silver quick release shaft. Look at how thin the black outer quick release sleeve is where the screw would push down upon. It clearly is not intended to be a load bearing surface, which it would have to be if it were intended or designed to somehow reduce flex.
    The screw was never designed, nor intended to reduce shaft flex. It’s purely there as an extra step to (somehow) stop unintended disconnection of a wheel (which itself is not actually possible). Since it takes more than one ‘step’ or movement to remove a wheel, not just one unintended or accidental movement, that in and of itself is a ‘safety lock’ because how can someone first pull the outer quick release ring back towards the wheel, and then, while holding the quick release ring somehow unintentionally pull the wheel off? It just isn’t possible! In any way whatsoever. I mean, you have to remove your hands from the wheel itself to grab the quick release outer sleeve so how could anyone ever do that unintentionally? It’s not like flicking a switch because your eyes were on the road and you didn’t want to take the time to glance at the switches and because you were driving/concentrating so hard at that moment, your muscle memory wasn’t quite what it usually is and your (choose a finger or thumb) pressed the wrong switch/button/pushed a toggle instead of a button/etc.
    I hope this might go some way in helping to put to rest anyone continuing to believe that the screw is somehow, magically reducing shaft flex. I’ve only experience with the Clubsport and CSL Elite wheelbases, but even on a DD1/2, the quick release STILL does not have any threads in it and no load bearing surface for the screw to snug down upon. If it is possible, please, someone enlighten me and explain how this actually occurs? With many thanks.

    Well done BM crew! Loved the video, and your attention to detail.
    I couldn't do it right now anyway, but I've got a F1 "Limited Edition" rim on my CSW v2.5 atm. It's the black and silver version, whichever year that one is from. But I DON'T have the additional paddles for clutch and "bite point", which I've never done before (obviously). So the new McLaren is interesting to me, but because it doesn't have all the dial encoders that the "more expensive" F1 LE have... I'm not sure if that's even something I'd want to go to.
    How "much better" would you say the "bite point" system is for games like F1 2020? Is it something folks that haven't raced IRL are going to understand and find useful? Or should most of us save our money, and be quite happy with whatever setups we already have? Given my current financial situation, I feel VERY lucky to have the gear I already have... with CSW v2.5, CSL Elite with Load Cell pedals and brake, the aforementioned F1 rim, as well as the BMW rim with an aftermarket magnetic "shifter" mod added. And my Rseat S1 (because I had never done an 80/20 system, and that was more intimidating than I was prepared to deal with, without knowing where to go for a LOT of help figuring out designs and such) has been WONDERFUL. I don't have a buttkicker, but I'm in a condo so for now I've decided skipping that might keep things more civil with my neighbors, and other than adding the keyboard tray (so I have a place for a wireless Logitech K400 keyboard and trackpad on the rig, wireless controllers if I'm playing console games and use a DriveHub, or just want somewhere to keep my cell phone nearby, is great. ;) )
    Anyway, thanks again for the video, and have an awesome day!!! :)

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tbh the bite point clutch is pretty useless for F1 2020. Just assign one of your shifter paddles as your clutch (2nd function) and hold revs at 75% or so. Perfect launch every time.
      Absolutely not worth buying the advanced paddle module just for playing F1 2020.

  • @niki313131
    @niki313131 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Concerning your criticism about the shifter of the Clubsport universal hub. There is a nut that you can turn so the shifter in its initial position gets closer to the „click“. I calibrated that, so that it is just before the „click“ which is when it shifts. So then there is no play before the shift. However there is play after the shift, but that is not so important i guess.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I’ve tried that too. But found the click of the microswitch isn’t defined enough and I started mis-shifting more often. Big improvement with a $20 magnetic mod.

    If you don't use Fanatecs screw for fixing the QR to the base permanently but a solid screw which fits the size of the cutout in the black part of the QR there is absolute zero play in the Podium/Clubsport QR System. And I really mean ZERO play. There is a lot of play without a screw and still a bit of it with the Fanatec screw but when you use a M8.8 screw it fits perfectly. Driving it in for the first time it might cut about half a millimeter away from the QR but then it fits better than a perfect glove.
    I even have a 120mm extension on my DD2 now and there is NO flex in it at all. If I use my whole bodyweight (not recommended though) to push it to either side, I'm actually pushing my P1-X around...

  • @jinx20001

    thanks for the review, i think in regards to the quick releases you should have mentioned there is the opportunity to use the securing bolt with the clubsport quick release unlike the new twist style quick release, its not ideal but for the sake of 10-15 seconds it does reduce the play quite a lot on the clubsport quick release since the bolt is designed to push the metal of the sleeve and the metal of the hub together. i personally use one on a DD1 ofcourse and i also use a z ring and still the bolt and have zero play at all, but just the bolt on its own was enough to reduce it massively when the bolt is tightened a reasonable amount.

      @boostedmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve only ever had snapped pins once and it was on my Formula carbon wheel while using the screw. After that stopped bothering snd never had another issue. It only happens on the CSW2.5 due to there being no give in the female pin assembly. If you look at the CSL elite and DD female pin assembly it’s different and allows for some movement without stressing the pins.

      @@2ndLastJedi The screw does absolutely nothing whatsoever in terms of reducing shaft play. It’s not designed to reduce flex and was never intended to perform that function. It is purely to eliminate ‘accidental’ removal of the wheel by ‘accidentally’ pulling in the outer spring loaded quick release and then pulling the wheel itself from the base; so it really is quite redundant and I’ve never understood how anyone could ever remove the wheel without intending to do so, it isn’t as if just a single movement can end up with the wheel in your hands, completely disconnected from the wheelbase. Since several movements have to be performed to remove the quick release from the base, that in itself is performing the role of an unintended disconnect ‘safety lock’ type of role. The screw is 100% redundant. For actual proof of this, just have a closer look at what the screw threads into - the threads are only in the quick release, not the wheelbase shaft. If there are no threads in the wheelbase shaft, the screw is not pulling or tightening the quick release down, tighter onto the shaft. It’s performing the complete, opposite role and the more the screw is tightened, the more it will actually push the quick release away from the shaft, not snugging it down tighter.

      Agreed. McLaren is a good deal because even after $100 ClubSport upgrade, it's still $300 with magnetic shifters, 3 rotary encoders, clutch paddles, Xbox compatibility and the next best thing is V2 with APM which is almost $600.
      After ClubSport upgrade, this hub is only $100 less than Xbox hub without Xbox compatibility and worse shifters.
