Thanks a lot for this video. It really help me figure out how to connect my external mic to my iPhone, having a splitter in between, that would allow me to use the mic but also monitor it at the same time.
The only problem with the TRS to TRRS setup is that it won't work for a stereo audio source because only one side of the audio source will be sent to the iPhone in both channels resulting in a mono recording. I found this when trying to connect a stereo synthesizer to the iPhone using the TRS to TRRS cable and the TRRS to Lightning adapter. Also, the line level output of the synthesizer is too high for the iPhone resulting in a distorted sound. You can lower the volume of the line level source but then noise to sound ratio will get too high. I guess this setup only works for low level mono microphones.
Hi Ricardo, I have two thoughts for you: 1) absolutely right, the signal of line level is too loud. For that you could also use an attenuation cable like I have showed here: th-cam.com/video/JyQNbOj2PxI/w-d-xo.html 2) in regards to the stereo signal: the only real solution there is to use something that acts as a USB-Interrface. For example the Røde Wireless Go II does make use of this to support recording two separated channels of audio into left/right. Maybe there are other audio interfaces you could use for that.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for your reply. 1) After writing my comment I thought "why not use the low level headphones output of the synth or mixer?" I think that could work. I'll try it. And yes, the attenuation cable is an excellent solution. 2) The TRS to TRRS won't work but I think that by using the TRRS to TRS split cable you showed I can get the stereo signal into the microphone stereo input. I'll try that too. Thanks a lot!
@@ChrisSpiegl I'm already using the USB-Interface solution but I was trying to avoid using an interface. Hey, the iPhone IS an interface! It should be possible without the use of additional hardware I guess.
@@ricardojsgw/videos From what I know the TRRS simply does not support stereo audio since it only has 4 connection points (mass, left, right, and mic). So guess you'll have to use the interface after all - if you need a stereo signal.
Thanks, so im just trying to translate it to my Go Pro Setup with Media Mod Ill probably need a TRRS to TRS Adaptor to go into the Go Pro End Then the Y splitter so hopefully i can monitor the sound from my external TRS Mic. I was originally going to use the iPhone to perform a test recording so i know the situation at the time with wind levels but it seems i can monitor in real time now which would be much better
You will have to use a TRS to TRRS cable with the Røde VideoMicro to work on an iPhone. And of course you will also need one of those lightning to TRRS adapters as well.
Would it be possible to do the same (to listen to what you are recording at the same time that you use USB microphones instead of TRS/TRRS ones?) Directly from the iPhone? Thank you!
Chris you obviously know how to make this work!! Would you please make a new video on the same subject eliminating all of the comments on what does not work. It is also confusing to see your monitor of the sound as it blocks the video of the connections. I know you have the answer for me, but I have watched the video several times and still do not know how to attach my Sennheiser powered microphone to my iPhone XR and also connect my headphones.
I'm not sure I am the right person for you then. I hope you can figure it out but with a lot of tech there are just so many things to take into consideration. But I will consider your feedback. Trying to focus more on the solution than the other things. Thank you for that feedback 🌸.
Crucial Info, excellent video. The only person I found on youtube that made a vid to explain how to solve this problem! Thank You. I'm hoping this process will work with a Rode SC4 and/or Lapel mic mini jack straight into the iPhone? Also another thing to mention is that the iPhone dongle is MFI (Made for Apple) certified otherwise it wont work as a mic input.
I have found a workaround to this issue I believe. I use MoRec app(IOS and Android) to record and monitor the audio whilst using my camera or other app. MoRec boosts the audio and I simply add it back in during the edit. it may not be a simple fix, but a double clap to fix the audio start point will work every time in FCP and Reaper is my DAW so that's even better. I couldn't justify spending lots on dongles and cables for education purposes, but this way, most children will be matching audio at some point in I-Movie or FCP or Premiere. Hope this helps. Shane, Tipperary, Ireland
Interesting approach, I didn't even know that you could record audio in a separate app while also recording video (most of the time playing back music for example, the music stops as soon as I open the camera app in video mode). So, thank you for sharing this tip! 🌸
Thank you! I just so happen to have this exact set up with the Deity Pro. Now I know the splitter will be enough for me to monitor what i am recording into iPhone.
With the new version Røde Wireless Go II, I think it is possible (especially when you use the USB-C to Lightning Cable). And if you have the previous version, then an adapter like the one shown here would work (with certain iPhone Video Shooting Apps).
Hi I have previously just bought the same microphone when I put it into a FiLMiC Pro I do not hear much from my mic Also I do not have the option where it says headphones is the only reason for
Hi Destiny, I would guess that that would work, however I have not tried it since it is not my use case for this cable. But it sounds like it does what you are asking - as long as the apps which you are describing support playback while entering new mic sounds it should work fine.
I'm having trouble with "hissing" coming through my Rode Pro Shotgun Mic. I have the correct lightening to TRS adaptor into my IPhone 14 Pro, any tips to fix the hiss noise?
Great video, two questions: Is there a dongle/adapter to do the same but with USB microphones? And, to monitor the audio in real time while recording, can you simply listen to yourself directly from the moment you connect the headphones or do you have to enter an app or activate something specific? Thank you so much!
Not sure about usb-c since I don’t have one of the new USB-C iPhones. But I’d assume that these exist. Some of the Wireless systems or the Rode VideoMic Go II can actually be connected via USB-C and they have a monitoring port. There you can monitor live. But with the adapters shown in the video you have to be in a video app for monitoring to work.
Thanks for the video, I tried the using the cable, but I can't monitor my audio from a rode wireless go. May I ask if it's even possible to monitor audio with Rode wireless go?
The ability to monitor your audio depends on the application you use on the phone. Some camera apps support this, some don’t. The most feature rich one that supports monitoring is called FilmicPro - but it’s not the only one and there may exist free alternatives as well.
Hello how are you? I use the Streamyard on the Ipad pro (USB-C) and I need to use my in ear phone (P2) as a return, along with a Boya cardioid microphone BY-mm1. How do I connect both on the iPad to make the transmissions? Need a dongle or DAC?
i did exactly the set up you suggested on my iPhone 12 and couldn't get the headphones to work unless I disconnect the mic. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I get audio through the headphones on playback, but not while monitoring, my setup is, Rode Go II->TRS to TRS cable->TRS -> TRRS splitter (same as yours)->Apple adaptor (same as yours)->iPhone 13. You don't mention this happening in the video, am I correct in saying I need a TRS to TRRS cable between Mic and splitter in order to get monitoring (as well as audio on playback)? The Rode Go II already has a TRS cable and that would be the one to use with the Headphone/Mic splitter. The thing is that not all video apps support monitoring.

I' m using a similar setting, beginning with FILMIC Pro on the Iphone Xs Max -> Apple Lightning Adapter to 3.5mm Headphone and Lightning! -> Rode SC6 Adapter (TRRS to TRRS Headphone and 2 x TRRS Mic) -> Rode TRS to TRRS cable (SC4) -> Rode Videomic NTG Autosens Cable -> Rode VideoMic NTG. Using this setting has some benefits: - you can charge your Iphone during filming :-) - on the Rode SC6 you can plug 2 mics if necessary (but not splitted in 2 channels) and you can monitor your audio with headphone :-) - the Rode SC6 is tiny in comparison to any splittercable :-) Note!!!: With Rode Videomic NTG you can't use the autosensecable directly plugged into the SC6 splitter (very bad audio!), you habe to use between SC6 audiosplitter and autosensecable a Rode TRS to TRRS adapter (SC4).
Hey Johann, thanks for sharing these details. So many adapters but I know the struggle. I like the setup and I have made other videos also showing parts of what you are sharing (specifically how to charge and use the mic port): th-cam.com/video/JvP8mBPJWbg/w-d-xo.html I think it's a bit sad that Røde didn't give an option to split the left and right for the SC6 adapter (a switch on the device would have been great to be able to decide to split or mix down). But there are also options for that I like to use: amzn.to/3p801BN (this gives me the option to use two mics at the same time and have them split to the left and right channel of my camera, however, then you need the headphone/mic splitter and also this one so that's one more adapter 🙈). Glad to hear from you again and hope you find more value in my videos too. 🌸 Chris

This didn't work with my Aputure D2 Mic and my Iphone 11. I tried your style of set up. Then I tried one from cubilix which is a dual headphone and microphone lightning splitter. I also tried a lightning cord with one lightning charger and headphone. None of it worked. The only thing left to try is the AI Micro, but that is $100. I could just buy the Rode Video Micro Me-L for $100 plus tax and be able to get better sound and monitor audio at the same time.
great vid! in my FilmicPro app / iPhone 11 I do not have the 'Headset Microphone' option? I'm using the Rode VideoMic Pro Rycote camera shotgun, can't find anywhere online if this is compatible, would you know? thanks!
Thank have no experience with that particular mic. Does the mic have the TRRS connector or is it TRS? Aka: does it have 4 metal rings or 3? If it has 4, and you want to use it with an adapter to split headphone and mic, then you probably need a TRS to TRS cable.
What wasn't clear for me, was whether the splitter shown in the video will allow stereo recording and stereo monitoring with the headphones. Can anyone give a definitive reply to this issue. I would assume that this isn't just a mono setup, since it would seem that most people would want to record in stereo, but at this point, I'm not sure about this setup. It seems like he didn't mention stereo vs mono. Thanks!
Have you tried using Bluetooth headphones to monitor audio while a mic is connected in the lightning adapter? Sorry for commenting the second time but it's just been really bugging me because I'm in the same situation as you. From my results I assume that even though there's no headphone connected to the trrs adapter ( lightning adapter) the iPhone still assumes that the mic is a headset(headphones + mic) and if I do connect a Bluetooth headphone ( that doesn't have a built in mic) the lightning port overrides it.
So the ultimate setup is the splitter that you used in the other video (with two lightining connections) and these. Can you use them together? First - splitter with a powerbank attached and the lightining to 3.5 adapter and second - splitter for headphones and microphone attached to the lightining to 3.5 adapter. Is it possible? 😅
Yes, that's pretty much the ultimate setup you could possibly create 🙈 and it is possible. It does has worked in my testing. It's not for the faint of heart though. So many dongles.

This should work for both variations. What kind of cables do you have for the Saramonic? Is it a TRS or TRRS cable? This "mic/headphone" splitter needs a TRS cable coming from the mic.

I am assuming you are asking this becuase the Sony RX100 VII does not have a headphone port? I don't know… probably the RX100 VII does not have a TRRS port, so it would likely not work.
@@AC-wi9ib I do not think that it would work. The solution shown works with microphones that have a TRRS plug (phones usually have that). The TRRS combines mic and headphones with 4 golden rings on the plug, TRS on the other hand is 3 golden rings and only has Stereo / Mono signal. The camera you are using probably only has a TRS plug and would thus not work with this kind of adapter.

I've been looking all over for this. Right now I'm using stock camera app and have to leave Garageband open for monitoring!! I'm using an interface to record stereo audio direct (it's music related) but I want to know if I buy Filmic Pro will it work with the interface to monitor via the headphone output on that interface? Sadly, the TRRS audio connection to the iPhone is only capable of receiving a mono mic signal and sending stereo headphone signal. Fantastic video, as this is the closest I got to get things right. I currently have an iPhone and I am using the Boya lavalier mic (TRRS) with a lightning Belkin that splits into 3.5mm and power. But I want to include my headphone to be able to do live interview other people in Instagram using separate mic and headphones. So according to you I will have to buy a splitter, which will be TRRS to two TRS (mic and head). And I will still need to add another adaptor to convert my Boya TRRS to TRS. My question is… you mentioned that a few microphones automatically detects if it’s a TRRS or TRS receptor, so you connect your TRRS mic directly into the TRS splitter and it works. Does the Boya lavalier mic detects it automatically, or I’ll still need to buy the TRRS to TRS adapter? Thank you very much!
Thanks Chris, super useful info, this setup worked for me with a boya mm1 mic. (Lightning adaptor into two way trs splitter into headphones and mic via trs cable) however, if I take the same cable from the mic and plug it into my iPad to record the audio out from there, it doesn’t work! Tried SO many configurations of dongles and cables and adaptors (I have a whole bag full of them!) and the only thing that would even come close is using a ugreen usb A to audio in/out splitter out of the iPad (via a usb C to usb A adaptor) and plugging the audio in cable for the phone into that. This gives me pulsing intermittent signal from the iPad, obviously unusable but a signal non the less. Apple make outstanding products , but the lack of any kind of real connectivity is a massive ball ache. Anyway, thanks for the video, it got me a bit closer to the setup I’m looking for.

What splitter are you using? The first one I tried (just a standard TRS to TRRS splitter from Amazon) didn’t work. Could you recommend one. Also, just a side note, the Bluetooth option on filmic pro I found has a short delay which isn’t ideal for monitoring (hence I’m searching for a cabled solution!).
Without knowing where you are from this is basically impossible to recommend anything because these splitters are not like iPhones where I can point directly to one specific brand that is sold everywhere 🙈. I tried 3 at this point and all worked without any issues, just make sure you are not sending line level signal into your phone because that does not work very well (or at all).
@@ChrisSpiegl thanks for the response. I’m in the UK. I’ve ordered a couple of alternative splitters to try them out so hopefully one will work! @@webuygold2083 Sadly at the moment I can't recommend any specific ones. Maybe someday Røde would make one (they have been doing that for some other stuff). But they are also moving more toward the USB-C/Lightning connected mics which have monitoring ports (which is a much nicer long term solution in my opinion). If you are up to invest into a new mic set, maybe the Rode Wireless Go 2 or the Rode VideoMic NTG would be interesting choices that do have this type of feature.
@@ChrisSpiegl hello thank you for video. Very informative, but why you don’t want to answer to a simple question, but wrote a long comments. Just tell us which splitter do you use and share the link, please. 😊
Usually that means there is some more fiddling to be done or the cables are not correct. I had to play around a lot to get these types of setups working.
@@ChrisSpiegl Thanks for the reply. But it looks like the TRRS splitter into the lightning adapter setup somehow degrades the stereo signal when it comes back on the monitor(headphones). As a result the stereo audio signal record alone works but in case of a video recording the audio monitoring cuts off every 1-2 seconds, making the sound unusable. Tested with multiple cables, same result. Probably this is an audio interface limitation of iphone signal-monitoring capabilities. Maybe newer iOS can't handle this scenario🤔
Anybody out there know of any adapter that is lightning male on one end, and on the other end has 3 female ports/jacks (3.5mm headphone, 3.5mm microphone & lightning female (for power) )? If it doesn't yet exist, hows about one of you techie types start making some?
That would, indeed be a great adapter. However, it's also a kinda niche product when considering that you also could just use 2 - 3 adapters that already exist. Would need some serious market research if it is worth it.
At one point in this I just started laughing because of all of the TR TRS this and that’s. Laughing out of how ridiculous iPhone make it to conduct such a simple task with all the fucking dongles, and out of identification to how I think. My brain thinks like you speak, and it made me realise why no one understands me as a content creator 😂
It's quite the insanity. Luckily, slowly things are getting easier with the advent of USB-C and Bluetooth microphones so that we don't even need these adapters anymore.
First thanks for your video, it seems to be the only one I have found that offers a reasonable explanation of audio on the iPhone. I just upgraded to an iphone 14 Pro Max. This is a major step away from my Sony cinema cameras and Sennheiser wireless kits but it seems that it is also the way of the future. Here is a weird one: I have both a Rode video Micro and Rode Wireless Go II setup. When I use the version of Filmic Pro that I have had for a couple years, not the monthly subscription which I am sure would be about the same, I can monitor audio while shooting, have a vu meter and all is good. When I use the built in Camera App in Video or Cinematic mode I can record audio but cannot hear it/ monitor it while shooting. This is a deal breaker for me. So it seems odd to me with the exact microphone and adapter setup I use in Filmic Pro that the Camera app from Apple reacts differently with no monitoring. Any ideas?
You may not have the right adapters or plugged them in incorrectly. But this is impossible to diagnose with this little information & no way to actually see the setup.
Thank you! finally someone explained where is TRS and TRRS. Thumbs up!!!
I appreciate that. Glad you found my video helpful 👌🍀.
Thanks a lot for this video. It really help me figure out how to connect my external mic to my iPhone, having a splitter in between, that would allow me to use the mic but also monitor it at the same time.

Can i hear my audio after recording from iphone speaker without unplug the cable? (i don't want to use the headphone)
thankyou 🙏🏻
I don't think so.
Hi Ricardo, I have two thoughts for you:
1) absolutely right, the signal of line level is too loud. For that you could also use an attenuation cable like I have showed here: th-cam.com/video/JyQNbOj2PxI/w-d-xo.html
2) in regards to the stereo signal: the only real solution there is to use something that acts as a USB-Interrface.

Hello, how to set up a rode video micro microphone, it does not work for me on an iPhone 12 pro max. How do I set up my phone? Thank you very much.
You will have to use a TRS to TRRS cable with the Røde VideoMicro to work on an iPhone. And of course you will also need one of those lightning to TRRS adapters as well.

Can you use this to make phone calls?
I have not done extensive tests but it should work (just like it also works for Clubhouse rooms).
Does the adapter generate noise such static in recording using Garage Band? Thank you so much!
Thanks very much for these explanations. Kind regards

Interesting approach, I didn't even know that you could record audio in a separate app while also recording video (most of the time playing back music for example, the music stops as soon as I open the camera app in video mode). So, thank you for sharing this tip! 🌸

There anyway to hear my self with a headphone while recording with rode wireless?!
With the new version Røde Wireless Go II, I think it is possible (especially when you use the USB-C to Lightning Cable).
And if you have the previous version, then an adapter like the one shown here would work (with certain iPhone Video Shooting Apps).

Can someone please recommend the best pro video app or name the one he is using which allows you to easily access the audio inputs and settings
Nowadays, that’d be the Blackmagic Camera App on iOS 👍. Even Apple themselves are using it for their video productions.

i did exactly the set up you suggested on my iPhone 12 and couldn't get the headphones to work unless I disconnect the mic. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
This may depend on the app and adapter you are using? Could you share more details?

I get audio through the headphones on playback, but not while monitoring, my setup is, Rode Go II->TRS to TRS cable->TRS -> TRRS splitter (same as yours)->Apple adaptor (same as yours)->iPhone 13.
You don't mention this happening in the video, am I correct in saying I need a TRS to TRRS cable between Mic and splitter in order to get monitoring (as well as audio on playback)? Thanks for any help.
The Rode Go II already has a TRS cable and that would be the one to use with the Headphone/Mic splitter.

Using this setting has some benefits:
- you can charge your Iphone during filming :-)
- on the Rode SC6 you can plug 2 mics if necessary (but not splitted in 2 channels) and you can monitor your audio with headphone :-)
- the Rode SC6 is tiny in comparison to any splittercable :-)
Note!!!: With Rode Videomic NTG you can't use the autosensecable directly plugged into the SC6 splitter (very bad audio!), you habe to use between SC6 audiosplitter and autosensecable a Rode TRS to TRRS adapter (SC4).
Hey Johann, thanks for sharing these details. So many adapters but I know the struggle.
I like the setup and I have made other videos also showing parts of what you are sharing (specifically how to charge and use the mic port): th-cam.com/video/JvP8mBPJWbg/w-d-xo.html
I think it's a bit sad that Røde didn't give an option to split the left and right for the SC6 adapter (a switch on the device would have been great to be able to decide to split or mix down).

Chris, what is the brand of the phone tripod you're using?
It's a regular tripod with an Arca Swiss plate head. Then a phone adapter with Arca Swiss base by ULANZI.
I'm having some issues. I will post starting from the phone. iPhone 12 Pro Max. Official Apple Lightning to TRSS adapter. The splitter you listed. TRS headphones plugged into the headphone jack on the splitter. TRS connection on the mic side going to a FEELWORLD FM8 Universal Compact Shotgun Video Microphone that came with 2 adapters. If it has 4, and you want to use it with an adapter to split headphone and mic, then you probably need a TRS to TRS cable.

You're welcome. I am glad I could help.

Any ideas?
my phone thinks my mic is headphones please help
You may not have the right adapters or plugged them in incorrectly. But this is impossible to diagnose with this little information & no way to actually see the setup.
what a mess
