Hey Dr..my sister has panic disorder ,,,,she has severe agrophibia even dosnt go to washroom becz the fear of panic attack,,,..she was on sertaline for one month her panic attack frequency decreased little bit but phobia is increased very much plz hlp
So what kind of anxiety is this if it's not categorized as health anxiety? I don't think its generalized anxiety either. I have GERD and all this time I thought I have health anxiety.
Did anyone else originally get anxiety from the stomach issues which led to getting more anxiety from the symptoms of the panic attacks? I can’t keep my mind off of stressing and being scared to feel bad again which ends up triggering my anxiety
Same I never had anxiety until this pandemic and schoolwork. I got my first panic attack a week ago was horrible. I don't feel like myself anymore plus I've been trembling for months and now that I don't have school so I feel stress free,I'm still trembling?
I have tears in my eyes, I have never thought anyone could explain so perfectly how I feel. I have silent reflux, I’m also scared of meds, and I’m stuck in a black hole of panic attacks and stomach distress. I was starting to think I had health anxiety but now I understand completely. You are an angel to make these videos and help us. I’m so thankful for you!!!!
Yesss!! My parents bought me meds but I don't want to take them I took them twice but I don't want to keep taking them and Im scared to go to a clinic because I don't have insurance and also I'm scared of covid. I have had shortness of breath, acid reflux, bloated from the stomach, chest tightness, gas, burping, and whistling from my breathing. It's been 3 weeks and rn I feel chest tightness and stomach tightness. The other day I had an anxiety attack and I don't want to talk to my parents or gf about because I don't want them to worry. I've been stressed and scared.
I have the same thing can’t believe I found this video. I treating it by doing a fast (snake diet) method to get rid of my nicotine addiction and others that keep my from sleeping well and really going to tackle this with a holistic approach
@@rubenestrada8435 please go to the clinic and eat your meds! If it goes further it can lead to much serious health issues and possibly stomach cancer.
This just made me feel better. My anxiety/panic attacks ALWAYS lead to me being extremely bloated, gassy and Belching an insane abnormal amount. I’m reading comments, and I’m glad to see I’m not alone. Thank you for posting this!
there is 3kg (6.6 pounds) threshold for me between having 0 gerd and having it several times per day. For me it's BMI 26.0 that's the threshold, anything higher - GERD, anything lower - not at all
I'd been to the hospital with the most intense stomach pain several times in my life, only to be told I'm perfectly healthy. I finally met a doctor who explained it could be stress. I was shocked that was even a possibility. Therapy has really helped me.
Hey I hope they did some kind of research like blood tests or gastroscopy before they concluded "it's all in your head". Gastritis can give such a strong pain but it can be treated very well.
When I'm anxious my stomach talks, it gurgles and whines, it's crazy to listen to. Only been the last year, I get gas moving through my intestines, when my anxiety is severe my whole gut and nervous system burns throughout my body 😢
@Lady-hi7mr omg unfortunately I know Exactly that. mine noticed mine in Feb of 2023& it comes & goes. I Def need to change some things but it was Never this bad.😢.. also God Bless & hope ya get better 🙂
Everything she's saying is true. Once I started cutting out sugar & carbs and started eating whole foods such as fruit (mainly papaya) & vegetables, fish, quinoa, squash, etc. I noticed a difference in my gut and how I was feeling.
This is what I experience almost every single day. When my stomach aches my anxiety triggers and vise versa happens too. What I hate the most is when I get panic attacks because of my anxiety. It's hard really especially at night when I'm lying down and ready to sleep. Just like now I watch this to calm myself. I hope every single one of us will get better and be able to fight our anxities.
Thank you and God bless you, Patata. The storm doesn't last always. I'm really eager to fight this battle, control my anxiety, and take back my life. I hope we can all do it together!
When I was a kid I remember my grandmother always telling me how important gut health is and the connection between nervousness and stomach problems... This has always rang true for me.
I have been struggling with my gut health for the past several years. Feeling nauseas is one of the frequent symptoms.i envy people with no health issues. Sometimes I pity myself. This video is so relatable. It's comforting to know that I am not alone
me too. I have been dealing with nausea since I got covid in 2021. I get nauseous out of the blue and like this psychiatrist said I am begin thinkin I have other illness and think I am going to die. I really want to stop thinking all this and get better.
Thank you, Dr. It has been 8 months I have been suffering from this. Fear of death, fear of night, fear of loneliness, fear of cancer, shortness of breath, excessive burping all the time, gassy stomach...you covered it all.
Cortisol gets a bad rap. It's blamed for anxiety, high blood pressure, stroke. Sugar intake is one of the classic triggers for cortisol release. Regular, high sugar intakes may keep your levels elevated... Blood pressure caused by peripheral vasoconstriction, fast heart beat that elevate your blood pressure...
Been struggling a lot with this, I’ve been so anxious n stressed that I’m nauseous most of the day. I’ve stuck to eating bland foods because of fear of throwing up and it’s been a while since I looked forward to eating some of my favorite meals. But I went to my dr n slowly but surely my body is balancing itself out again! If you’re reading this and can relate, just know that it will pass and I hope that you feel better. Sending lots of positive energy to you guys ❤ Update: hello to everyone reading this! Just wanted to say I hope you’re all staying positive, I know that having severe anxiety/panic attacks is the absolute worst. Just know that you’re not alone, and there’s so many things to do to improve your quality of life. Lately I’ve been incredibly stressed with school and my anxiety is now starting to cause dizziness and panic attacks almost daily. There are times when I actually feel so upset that I’m feeling this way, but I’m doing my best and taking it day by day. See, you’re not alone! Listen to binaural beats for anxiety and take a few deep breaths and know that everything will be ok. 💙
I can identify. The nausea makes me feel the same way - I only want to eat bland, simple foods because I have no appetite. I'm glad things are getting better for you!
you literally described me, but my anxiety has moved on from that to brain fog and feeling confused all the time and it’s hell. postive energy to you and everyone here 🥰
Exactly the same wtf, i only eat the same exact foods every week, all processed and frozen. I've refused fresh foods for 20 years, and I don't know what to do because I'm extremely stubborn because of this emetophobia. I've maybe added one more new thing like every 5 years
I was severely traumatized years ago as a teenage, got diagnosed with ADHD. Spent my whole life fighting ADHD. I suffered severe anxiety and mental disorder. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.
Congrats on your recovery buddy. Psilocybin is so misunderstood and underrated in the psychiatric world. So glad your wife introduced this healing g modality to you! Thanks for talking about this.
YES very sure of Dr.alishrooms. I have the same experience with anxiety, depression, PTSD and addiction and Mushrooms definitely made a huge huge difference to why am clean today.
Yes he's Dr.alishrooms. Shrooms to me is a natrual healer. I know a guy who has used mushrooms in the same way and they have really helped him. mah dudes have safe trips all.
Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point
You're not by yourself, I promise you. I've experienced the things the doc is talking about and more. I constantly have butterflies in my stomach but Hydroxyzine helps keep it at bay. When I'm really feeling scared about certain things in my life, I get this feeling of knots in my stomach that's constant and it's miserable! I felt compelled to reply to your comment because I feel an angst there. The empath in me just wanted to reach out to you so you won't feel alone. And since I can't hug you in person, I'm giving you a big warm TH-cam hug.☺💙
u really arent alone! my issue is the fear of my stomach or body making noises in quiet rooms, this led me to failing my exam and now im re doing it this year, i still have this issue but i kept inside and sufferedn in silence but once i told the counsellers and expressed how i felt and how it effects my ability to work properly and how its a heavy burden on my shoulder, they took it seriously so now i have extra time and my own room and also i have a pass that i show to the teacher i feel panicky or need to go to the toilet. Wish you the best of luck
As a practitioner who works mainly with clients with gut infections, I can safely say that all she's saying is true. Gut infections tend to go hand-in-hand with anxiety. You explain that connection so well!!
Yes but I think she under emphasizes just how much these "functional" ailments START from stress/emotional issues, not just exasperating them. Big difference for treatment approach. If your GI issues are rooted in stress, and you go to a doctor to try to sort it out "medically", that can be counterproductive ...ie when we consider these ailments, tha5 have no organic cause, for the most part, are Mind Body or learned "neuroplastic" pain. Actual infection? Sure, threat it medically, of course. But most IBS sufferers do not find parasites or infections. And even if they do, at least for things like SIBO, antibiotics don't always work. It's still the brain at work, keeping score, and the body is the scorecard
@@oohellosaweenaoo also candida albicans...its a fungus in your gut but can be systemic and that's not good. If you dont stop eating breads and sugary drinks anyway doing your research you would find what causes candida and what to eat.
@@oohellosaweenaoo omg I hope your doing ok I was told that I have Covid last week I feel better from it I had lost my taste and smell and now it’s back but I’ve been having anxiety attacks it’s so scary it makes me feel crazy it’s sucks so bad I pray that we all come out of this stronger and with better health🙏🏾💕
This is 100% true. I want to try and help somebody by telling my story. About 4 years ago I started having really bad anxiety, was finding it hard to go to work or be around people or perform any kind of task. I went to a few doctors and told them that I feel like my anxiety is worse when things are going wrong with my gut. None of them batted an eyelid until the last one who told me pretty much the same thing as this video. She recommended me some books to read so I read them, and did a whole lifestyle change. My wife and I started making all fermented foods, our own kombucha, our own kefir, our own kimchi, fermented veggies, I cut out sugar, I cut out booze, started exercising EVERY day, and I can't tell you what a difference it all made. Much like this video said it doesn't eliminate the anxiety, but it puts you back in the drivers seat, it gave me power over the anxiety so that I could deal with that. 4 years later I feel 1000% better than what I did then. I'm not completely without anxiety but I have much, much more control to the point where it isn't impacting my life more than I imagine a normally 'anxious' person would be. I also was able to start re-introducing some naughty things, sweets, alcohol, and just learning what I can get away with without it impacting me. If your anxiety stems from gut problems like in this video, please, tackle your gut health first, and see what a huge difference it will make!
@@tapasibhattacharya3053 There's a lot of youtube channels that are pretty helpful, can't remember which exactly because it was a few years ago now! But search for kimchi, the kombucha is a personal favorite because it's quite easy to maintain if you keep on top of it and it's an awesome alternative to sugary drinks/cordials.
@@gillianjones2143 I read Guts by Julie Enders and The Clever Guts Diet by Michael Mosley. Both were great and had a lot of the same info, I prefered the Michael Mosley one just because it was a bit more straight to the point info which is how I prefer to learn. The Julie Enders one was great but the writing style was very 'fluffy' - dunno how else to put it sorry. But that's just personal preference, both had awesome information.
The upper pain in my stomach feels like an ulcer from all the stress . It can be sharp or dull but noticed when I don’t have anxiety or feel depressed I don’t feel it really …
Anxiety also releases stress hormone (cortisol), which causes the body to produce extra levels of stomach acid. That acidity causes the lining of the esophagus to become irritated, and this can lead to stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, and in severe cases, stress-induced ulcers.👍
If cortisol is causing the body to produce extra levels of stomach acid what can we do to calm that down? I get all these symptoms frequently. In this case am I suppose to be treating the anxiety first or take acid reflux medication to calm the stomach in order to lower the anxiety from all the stomach issue. I feel like it becomes a cycle. How will you break this cycle?
Have also been affected by cortisol. I have read a lot about stress and anxiety causing stomach issues and bloating. Deep breathing and walking is the best I have right now
There is a lot of evidence painting in the other direction. That acidity actually decreases, which makes more sense really, diverting digestive power away from stomach when stressed and instead channel blood to the brain and limbs.
I’ve been having this anxiety at night and even getting anxious in the afternoon because I know I won’t sleep at night . This is so informative. Thank you
I’ve been waking up and experiencing stomach or bowel discomfort which often leads me to thinking I need to go to the toilet ASAP. And now every morning as soon as I open my eyes, I immediately think about it and even just thinking, if leads me to these symptoms! 🤯😣
This lady's mesage is spot on. I'm a counsellor and I see this correlation regularly. The most common side effect of stress that I see is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) but there are many others like skin rashes and chronic fatigue. I believe that, if not corrected, stress can indeed be a killer!
Agreed. It definitely eats away at you. And yet correcting stress is the hardest thing to do. No amount of therapy, meds, or relaxation methods can eliminate stressors that are out of your control. Life situations can’t always be changed and consequentially the stress can’t go away. It’s a dead end.
I suffered from IBS then started getting panic attacks and was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder. Cognitive therapy, relaxation techniques, rhythmic exercise, music and meditation have changed my life! I’m happy to say my IBS is gone too after 20 years of suffering from this embarrassing disorder! I did take probiotics for about 3 months around the same time. Your videos are so informative. I’m am happier then I’ve ever been in my life because I realized self care, cognitive therapy and alternative medicine could cure what traditional medicine never accomplished.
@@keilyngonzalez8750 none my doctors told me there was nothing they could do for me. I went to four different doctors and they all said the same thing!
Hi Gina! I also have IBS that triggered my generalized anxiety. In my country, treatment with psychologists and psychiatrists are absurdly expensive, so I'm trying to learn myself techniques, such as meditation and breathing to try to "fix myself". Do you have any video or app to recommend? Some sort of therapy that could be done at home? Thank you!! 💚
@@CerinAmroth Headspace is on you tube and also an app. There are all kinds of guided meditation on TH-cam. Taking prebiotics and probiotics helps s lot too. Avoid dairy and drink lots of lemon water too. Good luck! I know how frustrating it can be.
This is spot on! It’s a vicious never ending circle until you start dealing with your acid reflux and eating foods that help your microbiom like probiotic yogurt, bone broth and butter and eggs. Trust me I literally went through all this which started at the beginning of the quarantine. On top of that the acid reflux made me short of breath! My anxiety sky rocket until I took the first steps of healing my gut and dealing with my acid reflux. I’m doing much better now since I started making changes. You can do it! Don’t give up!

You are a god send this makes so much sense to me, I’ve waited over 10 years for uk gp’s to work this out and they have still not explained it to me as easily as you have just done. Thank you
I am a psychology professor and was just teaching this to my class this morning. Did youtube/google hear what I was teaching and suggest your video? I don't know, but, I loved it and will play it for my class on Monday! Thank you!
I was diagnosed at 29 with anxiety. Then I was diagnosed with GERD at 31. I've been focusing on my diet and gut health for the last 3+ years, it's been hard but I refuse to be medicated. Did it for a few years and it fried my 🧠.
@rahtaylor7651 In the beginning, it felt like torture not being able to eat anything. I lost a lot of weight because I was only drinking my food through a straw. Now, I just avoid the basics, spicy foods (so hard), processed foods, gluten-free, sometimes meat. I feel better, but I think my straw method was best. Even though I lost weight, I didn't have any flares. I have flares now. I have a book called the Mediterranean Diet. I think this works because I can still eat, but I'm not going to lie. Sometimes, I do eat that cheeseburger. If I continue eating inflammation, soon I will get it. Self decipline is hard but it's so worth it.
@rahtaylor7651 protein shakes with no filler, (protein, bananas, cinnamon, peanut butter, honey). Green smoothies. Pureed soups. Fruits & Vegetables. Took my vitamins in liquid form. Digestive Enzymes & gut healers (Amazon). Ashwaganda (stress). Lots and lots of Aloe.
I keep saying this. Every single person I know that has anxiety as GI issues. RN here. In nursing school we were thought that IBS has a correlation with mental health issues.
Yeah well, as someone with GI issues, being in pain and nauseous all the time, it's no surprise that we may be dealing with anxiety a lot. Wouldn't anyone? This 'mind/gut' connection sounds nice, but it's obvious the science is still lacking in this area, so it feels like a way to stifle the conversation into investigating a patient's problems by throwing SSRIs at them that probably won't work
@@Caleb-il7om Yes. If you have GERD, you will also develop anxiety (not health anxiety according to Dr. Tracey). So I was wondering what kind of anxiety is this then? Because with GERD, its symptoms are very close to the feeling of dying so you worry about having a heart attack and many more. Those with GERD know exactly what I'm talking about.
@@vanillaice7576 Yes, but clearly every GI issue is not GERD. Also, I feel like that's a strange example. If I knew I had GERD and was diagnosed, why would I be worried about a heart attack? I'd know where the pain is coming from. From my experience, I haven't been diagnosed yet so I know my undiagnosed status leads to my anxiety that's different from other manifestations
This gave me the answer I'm looking for. I have been suffering with GERD for the past 4 yrs and have an anxiety and panic attack. Whenever my stomach doesn't feel right, I'm starting to feel anxious and my panic would flare up. Thank you Dr. Tracey.
I’ve been experiencing horrible anxiety since I was a teen and now it’s just full blown panic attacks. I was diagnosed with gastritis when I was in high school and I stop taking medication for it a few years ago. After watching this video I can’t help but think all this anxiety is being triggered by my stomach. This made me feel so much better. When I get in a state of anxiety I focus on my heart beat which makes me have a panic attack. Which then makes me feel like my chest is tight and I convince myself something is wrong with my heart. This comment section made me sigh of relief. I hope everyone here finds peace and works through there medical problems. I wouldn’t wish this feeling on anyone
Omg. Literally anytime my anxiety heightens or I get nervous for no reason, I have to poop so bad. And then when I'm in public places I always need to know where the nearest bathroom is just in case my anxiety comes on and I have to poop. ugh it's sucks. It's like a vicious circle. It's hard to enjoy life when I have stomach issues AND anxiety.
You are the first dr. Who completely described what I have been through because of my reflux and still go through because of it. It’s the first time that I feel somebody understands me in this. I didn’t know that there was a relationship between reflux and anxiety I just thought that I am getting carried away. Thank you very much dr marks
No one has ever ever explained this as insightfully as this making the link between gut health and anxiety/depression and given sound advice on how to address it. Thank you for guidance.
Thank you so much for explaining this to me. I've been having anxiety attacks which turns into panic attacks, and dealing with a sensitive stomach. This makes so much sense now the way you broke everything down. Thank you so much 🙏
I just want to live. I try to explain to my wife & my DR . That it feels like my stomach has its own anxiety attacks it’s a horrible evil cycle. I’m rdy to see what’s next.

Thank you so much Dr. Marks. March is a tough month for me due to PTSD from a car wreck with a semi truck in 2007. I do not sleep well this time of year….Your presentation helped me to understand how the gut can really ramp up anxiety. I appreciate you. Again thank you.🤔❤🇺🇸
This video almost brought me to tears. I’m not exaggerating. I’ve been dealing with GERD for years and it has worsened within the last year. I’ve been experiencing severe panic attacks seemingly out of nowhere and I don’t have a history of them. It took some time to realize that my acid reflux sneaking up on me during the day was triggering these panic attacks. Your example of Paul is me. 100%. Thank you for this video.
Mathew, Surprised. For years? Usually all recover in 2-3 months. Top priority is diet with less oil and spicey food, eating slowly, reduce snacking, chewing well, 2 glasses of warm water early morning on an empty stomach, and not lying down immediatly after meals. . Medication if advised. Most important is to relax your mind. Heal yourself. Reduce negative thoughts. Its quite simple with a little determination. Nerves are connected to everything and when your digestion is inflamed it affects the nerves that are connected etc... and it affects your nourishment that you are lacking which affects your brain.
Not all doctors are smart some are sheep they don’t think outside the box they only follow what they are taught.thank you dr you saving lots of people with this video
Ooofff girl yes, this is true. Whenever I would get acid reflux or heartburn (not as severe as GERD) , it started leading to anxiety, it even made me think I was having a heart attack once. I ended up going to urgent care, got some heart related test done, and was diagnosed with General Anxiety. I got a psychiatrist, got on lexapro, and with the help of my therapist was able to seperate anxiety from stomach pains (and other pains). My life has gotten a lot better, I am as happy as can be. Anxiety is a real problem, and it can be debilitating, you too can overcome it with the help you need.
I am so happy for you Andi Gomez, I am starting my medication for illness anxiety. I really do hope to feel better just like you... Its really hard living with this.
I've had it for 2 weeks and mainly after my first meal but my only symptoms are anxiety and burping a lot. I'm going to get some mental health this weak hopefully I get better soon because this is so stressful and mentally painful.
This has been so genuinely helpful. For the last 2 weeks i've been dealing with GERD and then I went on medication and started feeling dizzy constantly and I would just randomly get scared and start crying because I didn't know what was wrong with me. My doctors appointment is in a week but this has given me a glimmer of hope that this can and will go away.
It took me a long time to figure out the connection. Our mind and body are truly working together. I discovered a combination of things to help relieve my gastrointestinal issues and thus my anxiety. Discovering the physical symptoms and knowing that if I took something, anxiousness could be diminished within a short period. Add in regular exercise and diet. It’s a daily habit that works. Thanks for affirming how to treat anxiety when you have gastrointestinal issues.
You are a great communicator. I'm clear of a 4-month period that started with stomach pain and weight loss followed by anxiety-related issues. I took acid suppressors, I changed my diet then took biome restoring pills. This, combined with meditation and breathing strategies I believe helped with the brain-gut fallout from the initial stomach issue. It is reassuring to hear your explanations in calm, easy-to-understand language. No doubt you've helped others with their challenges or this multi-faceted issue. Thank you. ❤
No one ever understands what I go through. Seeing this video and comments is comforting, had no idea this many people are going through the same thing.
It's great to know I am not alone. I have this exact problem for years, sometimes I feel good but sometimes The anxiety paralyses me. And I always knew it was related to my gastrointestinal problems. Thank you so much, you are an angel 🙏
Thank you for this video. As someone with colitis I can attest to this 100%. If I’m flaring up my anxiety will be high as well. I was put on sertraline at one point and my anxiety skyrocketed to the point that I had a panic attack. It’s worth tackling gut issues first to see if mental health issues improve on their own.
When I was in third grade, almost every Tuesday I had stomach problems and didn't go to school. It was the day of PE/gym class, the teacher always gave me a hard time because I was overweight... Those were my first anxiety symptoms, good thing I'm being treated now.
Gym class created so much unnecessary stress for kids. Exercise should be fun not punitive! And many gym teachers openly tease and bully bigger children. I’m glad ur getting help now!
You just described me. I have been seeing a therapist. It's helping but it's take a lot of work. Thank you for sharing. This actually brought my anxiety down a little.
100% of my anxiety comes from my stomach making me think I'm having a heart attack. I never think it's another disease so it's very isolated but that definitely is what happens to me too.
I have the same problem. Try researching vitamin B1(Thiamine) and it’s relation to the digestive system and Anxiety. I’ve been taking it for a few weeks now and my anxiety is completely manageable now
I have been dealing with these exact same symptoms. And only last year I was able to connect the stomach issues to my anxiety. I hope you guys are doing better.
I'm a 21 years old woman from Brazil. Today, I went to the doctor because I was feeling really bad but couldn't identify exactly what this feeling was related to. I've always had problems with my stomach, and recently it has just gotten worse. I'm also a bit anxious. The doctor said exactly what Dr. Tracey Marks said, and I'm stunned by this! I couldn't imagine that the pain I was feeling (which I thought could be a heart attack) was related to reflux.Thank you so much for this video! Jesus bless you all ❤
Thank you for the food guide, I have IBS and I do eat all the foods on the list. My IBS is in check and as far as anxiety, I meditate and listen to new age music. I've been working out since middle school, I never drank or smoked and I'm 60. I enjoy your videos on TH-cam and I've subed to you today. Have a GREAT week.
Wow. I have to say. Over the weekend I had a hefty meal and had a bad time digesting my food. My chest felt like caving in and my anxiety shot thru the roof. For the rest of the weekend I have had a horrific time fighting this anxiety. This is most definitely a wake up call to be healthy. My brother went through the same thing and now it eases me a bit to know it could be the underlying cause of my Anxiety. I will work hard and choose what to eat especially when it comes time to bed. Thank you so much!
The fact that I’ve been diagnosed with IBS and anxiety + pure o ocd & no dr has explained to me why I get anxiety after eating !! Something I’ve struggled with since I was a kid . I feel so so blessed to come across this 😭🙏🏼 Thankyou so much!

So glad I found this. I have GERD and IBS, hardly ever get more than 3-4 hours of sleep at night, and anxiety. The past 3 years were hell. I was working 50 -60 hours a week and caring for my mother. She passed last year from a bowel blockage. Since then, my stomach issues have gone through the roof (as have my anxiety issues apparently). I’ve been so sick 2x that I had to go to the ER. Once in February and once in July. I am sure some of my anxiety comes from my job (OTR truck driver) and the fact that I don’t want to do that job anymore, but I have bills to pay. This video is one more tool in my arsenal of help which I have been seeking.
This is spot on. It seems that every time I have a stomach flare up it triggers my anxiety. I figured the two might be related one way or another but I wasn’t sure, this confirms it. I also have GERD and like the example you gave, I too was worried that I might have stomach cancer. I gained a bit more understanding from this video.
Marsha, Mind and body are closely related. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a healthier life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Day or night, when taking a walk, when reading, on the phone, before sleep etc sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instanly. Reduce spicey-oily foods, drink warm water early morning on an empty stomach and eat less at night. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.
Wow. This all describes me. So true I even get anxieties when going to bed cause I dont want to face my stomach problems in the morning. This was very helpful knowing ppl go through this also. Your videos are very helpful thank you
Thank you so much for this video! For a year I’ve been having inflammation and gut issues. My doctor told me to add fiber to my diet and my issues didn’t change. Then for a month I’ve been having panic attacks. I saw 2 psychiatrists and both confirmed that I don’t have a panic disorder but one of them mentioned diet. The story you described about your patient having panic attacks at night is what is happening to me. It has made me reflect on the past month and I noticed I didn’t have panic attacks on days that I ate clean.
Thankyou so much for this ,your presentations are so concise and well done. It's taken me far too long to realise the immense gut brain connection ,as soon as I become slightly stressed /anxious my digestion and IBS become a frightening torture . I stopped a heavy smoking habit of 46years with no nicotine replacement , biggest mistake ever ,my anxiety and gastro problems went totally off the scale . Three months on and I am using nicotine gum and symptoms now much more manageable . Thankyou again for your excellent work .
My physical issues doesn't induce anxiety, usually it's the other way around. I get diarrhea or get nauseous whenever I'm nervous and then these physical issues also create shortness of breathe then leads to more anxiety. It's a vicious cycle that I can't seem to break

Somehow the algorithm of TH-cam made this video appear on the list of suggestions and you are my savior, dear Doctor. I've been struggling with anxiety and gastric problems since I was a child. I sense that maybe those two things might have a connection but I never really get to know precisely. I only think that it is not the problem from my gastrocoele, it is because I always worry too much. You brought the saving light to my darkness. Now I know what to do. Thank you so much, you are a blessing for this Earth 🌷
I really appreciate your videos. Neither my psychiatrist or gastroenterologist will address these issues. They just want to prescribe more pills. Thank you for assuring me it's not in my head.
This is very helpful, I suffered from OCD from age 10-15 and but now at the age of 18 symptoms of pure OCD and intrusive thoughts I had came back. I was recently diagnosed with GERD and I've finally found a connection.
I really like your channel. I've been suffering from anxiety and it makes my stomach upset. And hurts. And almost feels like I'm gonna puke. I have anxiety cause I'm afraid of puking, then it makes my stomach even worse. Thanks for the relief! I appreciate it. ❤
I’ve been living with IBS for over 10 years, with the last 2 years getting progressively worse. It’s unfortunately gotten to the point where I am experiencing consistent intense daily pain no matter what I do. I am also diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and persistent depressive disorder, which have also become significantly worse over the past year or so. Almost every single day I find myself crying in a heap on the floor asking the empty room “Why can’t I just be normal for one day” and feeling so overwhelmed by physical and emotional pain that I just want everything to stop. I know at times my brain is actively working against me, floating anxiety across my consciousness and into my stomach, but it’s so hard to hold onto that fact and remember it’s a passing feeling when I’m in it. I always feel like I will always be in pain, and my brain has done a very good job of creating barriers to keep that way of thinking in place and they are so incredibly hard to take down…
I don’t know if I should suggest, but licorice root really helped my horrible burning in the gut/esophagus, and orange diarrhea (my whole system was so inflamed). I think it’s like $12 for 100 capsules on Amazon. I feel almost normal now🥹
If you're not taking any meds, may I suggest something? If you put together a smoothie of equal parts red cabbage, carrots and celery, daily, that will help repair and re-line the stomach wall. Try also cultivating your OWN kefir milk, drinking small amounts daily (5-10 teaspoons) because it has the beneficial bacteria she mentioned. Also, increase your Fibre intake (prebiotic), as this helps 'feed' the probiotics in kefir and in your stomach. (Try introducing garlic and ginger into your diet - prebiotics). I used to be INCREADIBLY depressed, and would suffer from unrelenting reflux for DAYS at a time, but then I did all that and I'm beginning to feel much better. (changed my diet to low carb with no crap too). Thinking about the past or the future doesn't help so try to occupy yourself with hobbies and pastimes. Above all, start over with maybe 2 (small) meals a day, and DON'T beat yourself up for ANYTHING - be gentle with yourself. BTW, the main cause of acid reflux us NOT ENOUGH acid in the STOMACH, so it has to 'borrow' some from the intestines, which is HIGHLY acidic. To increase stomach acid healthily, take an apple cider vinegar pill 10 minutes before eating.
I have a personal relationship with GERD--having said that, my issue comes more from a reverse effect. I have endured what I call a 'nervous gut' since my preteen years--I am just over seventy now. External and internal stress causes my gut to go into overload. At night, if I am thinking about something or nothing, I can feel the turbulence always beginning in my gut.
This is so interesting. I have awful upper and lower gut issues and terrible anxiety. My gastroenterologist says it's just IBS and dyspepsia and anxiety is causing it but I KNOW the it's the symptoms causing the anxiety because on the few off days I am symptom free it reduces my anxiety down to a much more manageable level. In fact, on those rare days I feel like I could conquer the world!

I tried to do some research on Google and I pretty have a bad health anxiety and I thought I had Colon cancer or something. It’s so annoying. My stomach feels warm, and sometime I get body aches and my doctor said i’m just having anxiety. They checked my blood count, my hormone levels, and my heart problems and they’re all pretty normal. I get like dizzyness and headache and derealization tho. It’s ironic ughhh. I wish this 2021, we are all going to be okay soon. To people who have panic or anxiety disorder :( keep praying!

Def a two way street. IBS all started with work burnout/stress and then the IBS brought out all kinds of old anxiety issues that I thought had gone away in my life prior. I checked for Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth, GI Map Stool Test, H Pylori, Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, Autoimmune Tests, Thyroid, Hormone Test and all came back normal. I went 80% whole food plant based, no sugar, gluten or alcohol, take probiotics, add Vitamin D, and still suffer from BLOATING and fatigue. Looking back at my life I have def struggled with anxiety. I think I need to acknowledge that despite all these positive habits I have in place there is an underlying anxiety issue at play that I just cant get a hold of with lifestyle/diet/meditation/praying/therapy/nature/community. I am considering trying medication as another tool and continuing these healthy practices.
This information is so needed. It helps a lot of people having gerd and anxiety at the same time. Thanks a lot. Today I feel the same gerd and anxiety and I saw your video. I will see a doc for my gerd first. Thankyou for putting this video ❤️
Hi, Tracey, I can't help but cry when watching this video because this has been my own experience since early 2019. A case of food poisoning resulted in a h, pylori infection that left me unable to keep food down and with severe GI issues, I started to experience severe anxiety and panic attacks related to my reflux pain. It's now been whell over a year and I'm still recovering and trying to understand my stomach, I have been left lactose intollerant after all of this aswell, truely my microbiome has been ravaged by the events of 2019. This list of foods is so well layed out I'm going to write these up in my journal
Hi...sorry to hear your struggling...I too experienced Hplyori in 2009. Its was going downhill also...but I had an endoscopy done ...turns out I have Ibs,,gastritis,,n sensitivity to gluten,,,I was already lactose intolerant so I changed my diet 360° ,,,I doing 80% a lil better but because stress happens w life I still get flare ups even though I do everything I'm suppose to.. I hope you get better.
I can really relate also, i have heavy depression and anxiety and if i eat any dairy, gluten, processed, sugary food my anxiety always hits hard. its got to the point where im afraid of eating and lost so much weight (was already under weight) Im a 39 year old male and a husband and a father of a 2 year old and im struggling big time. Im on 60mg Prozac after being on 225mg Effexor which stopped working recently. Its only been 3 days on the Prozac and im hoping for the best but life is so hard atm. I have everything i could possibly want but not my health and its killing me
Thanks for addressing this topic, as someone who is a mental health professional. Paul's story is very similar to my own. I struggled with GERD and anxiety for 15 years and I can attest to the fact that the mind and gut connection is a real thing. After I learned how to holistically heal my anxiety through mindset work and techniques, my GERD disappeared. It's so important to remember that all of our body is interconnected and if there is a physical symptom showing up for you, there is a mental and/or emotional problem causing it and vice versa. Thanks for sharing this video 💛

Thank you so much for this video it is 100% on point. I have ulcerative colitis and it has given me so much anxiety over the years that I never want to leave the house. Needing to always know where a restroom is or the what if I don’t make it thoughts have held me back from living a normal life. The sad thing is I have four boys that I can’t ever take anywhere because my anxiety is so bad in public. All the medications taken over 10 years since diagnosed while pregnant with twins have only made things worse for me. I believe it has destroyed my microbiome to the point where I need some serious self healing. I am now off all medications and the only thing that has helped was removing sugar and grains from my diet, and that is where I’m at in my life trying to heal through diet and exercise. I do believe the body can heal itself if you treat it right. Fasting is also something I have incorporated into my healing journey. I wish everyone the best of luck on healing and please don’t give up on yourself find what works for you and stick with it!!! God bless :)
I had debilitating ulcerative colitis and generalized anxiety for years!! The very first day I started taking an SSRI I could feel the inflammation-induced pain in my abdomen that I thought was my baseline drastically decrease. Within a week my elimination habits were painless and controllable. Besides that, the black hole of depression, aggression, and ever-bombarding critical thought dissipated. I regret allowing stigma to hold me back from taking care of my mental health for so long.
Yes Yes Yes. ‼️‼️ I love that you made this video!! I’ve been trying to explain the importance of the digestive system and how it connects to anxiety and depression‼️ You are THEE BEST ❣️
Whenever I have anxious thoughts I notice that I'm usually hungry, and I immediately calm down after I'm full. So I have to remind myself to eat or take care of myself in any way.
Lol i'm also often just hungry when i'm falling to the depressive thinking patterns. This adhd is kinda dumb though, but yea, i'm getting better with selfcare i guess Today was a good day c:
Hi🙋🏻♀️ currently being treated by a holistic Dr and gi surgeon Your might have a blood sugar issue. Ask your dr about it. Hy hypoglycemia and pre diabetes can cause your symptoms.
@@avill012 hmm i started again with this food tracker thingy today. So, i'm very sure, i lack quite a bit ressources. Uhm and low sugar looks a lot different for me xD Well, most of my heavy tiredness problems are related to a bunch of low ressources. Magnesium, iron, b12, d, proteins, sugar, whatever. It pretty much feels always the same, unless i see it directly with some little self-monotoring stuff. It's also very normal for me, to fall apart from a healthy diet, i guess. But today i should have enough of pretty much everything there is. At some point food is also the only thing you care about in the most developed countries. But i guess i'm not the only struggling with their basic needs from time to time. Anxiety stuff also happens more regularly to me, if i'm already more brocken than usual, because it's then getting harder to be as ready as usually. (Whereas my "usually" is also heavily affected by adhd)
Very interesting I usually feel strangely relaxed when I am hungry and I feel I can do anything. And sometimes when I eat food I feel bad mainly highly processed food.
So glad I came on this channel because I suffer with IBS. Nothing my doctors prescribe for me has helped me... my pelvic floor physical therapist told me to get calm magnesium about that yesterday. Oftentimes my legs feel like they're going jelly on me I just want my life
Thank you for being a good doctor and being open and honest and informative. So many doctors will push medications onto people and almost never mention or consider that person’s diet - which is everything. You are what you eat. So please people take care of yourselves and eat healthily so you can reduce your troubles and enjoy your life ❤️
Diet? I eat so healthily and I can't bear my reflux and mood disturbances. My GERD started after years of chronic stress and anxiety, during lockdown (lack of exercise and increased neuroticism, etc., must have contributed to the onset of it). Yes, after one has the disease (not cause by diet or weight - I'm very skinny), one has to be careful with trigger foods, especially on flare-ups, but as this video suggests, anxiety and depression (even underlying trauma) can, via the brain-gut axis, dysregulate our digestive systems. I eat very bland and healthy right now, I hate to eat, I take PPIs, and my GERD is still bad along with anxiety and depression. Also, very strict diets can be a tyranny and contribute to bad mental health (and for skinny people they can make one become underweight); not to mention that are many contradictory diets out there.

I made researches and found out that shrooms are very helpful , it has really helped to reduce anxiety and depression and some other mental health issues..i would love to try magic mushrooms but they are hard to source!
I feel the same way too. I put too much on my plate and it definitely affects my stress and anxiety level.. I am also glad to be a part of this community.😊
Psychedelic is the answer to most severe anxiety and depression...The use of magic mushrooms completely helps one get over depression and makes you feel like yourself...I used antidepressants for some years but it only made me feel like a zombie but with immediate use of mushroom 🍄 in few months I feel like I'm living a whole new Life.

You're right, I suffered through this vicious cycle of anxiety and IBS for years. Even got endoscopy done twice and consulted several gastro specialist until a GP explained me in simple terms. Since then stopped visiting doctors and hospitals. No regular medicine, I do occasionally take PPI or low mg anxiety pill but only SOS (max 2-3 days in a row). So far so good. I'm in mid-forties now.
Thanks for this topic. I used to have horrible acid reflux and it usually coincided with increased anxiety. It has cleared up with time but I wish I knew what you discussed then. I'll keep this in mind if it ever occurs again. Again thank you. You have been an amazing resource on my mental health journey.😊👍🏽
@@soberanisfam1323 Idk it kinda just gradually went away when I started taking better care of myself both physically and mentally. I think it was a combination of reducing my stress load and cutting back on acidic and spicy food (which was hard cause I love jerk chicken 😋🌶).
Hi Jason! Me too. It is a vicious cycle. Then, not only does my anxiety spiral up, my depression kicks in as I feel like my life is being run by what I eat and by my anxiety. It doesn’t matter which comes first, the anxiety or the GI problem, but as soon as one starts, the other kicks in. I have found that calming breathing exercises and progressive relaxation exercises help, as that gets my brain working, recognizing that I am in the vicious cycle, and can work on getting calmer, reduce the anxiety because I acknowledge that it is being worsened by my gut aches, which then helps my gut calm down because I know it is being aggravated by my anxiety. Yes, easier said than done. But it is worth a try for you. It is an ongoing effort as I have depression and anxiety from other issues too, but sometimes, when I get a bad nausea attack, I ask myself “Am I anxious?” and if the answer is yes, I know the gut issue is likely anxiety and not something I ate. Also backward I’d frequently when I get nauseous, I am actually hungry so I eat six times a day, which has helped. Just a suggestion.
Same!!! My anxiety had been very bad this week because I have gotten sick and when I get sick i get anxiety and my anxiety causes acid reflux. Do you take any over the counter medications? If so i need to know

How do I reach out to him? Is he on insta

As a practitioner who works mainly with clients with gut infections, I can safely say that all she's saying is true. Gut infections tend to go hand-in-hand with anxiety. You explain that connection so well!!
I just had c diff and my anxiety has been out of control.
Hi Gayle , where are you based?

My anxiety worsens after taking antibiotics 😢

I don't know how to make kimchi or other foods what you have said. If you please share me.
May I ask what books you recommend that helped you? Thank you 🙏🏼

Anxiety also releases stress hormone (cortisol), which causes the body to produce extra levels of stomach acid. That acidity causes the lining of the esophagus to become irritated, and this can lead to stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, and in severe cases, stress-induced ulcers.👍
Yeah very true. Thanks for this
That’s powerful knowledge
Thank you

Well thats depressing
I was diagnosed at 29 with anxiety. Then I was diagnosed with GERD at 31. I've been focusing on my diet and gut health for the last 3+ years, it's been hard but I refuse to be medicated. Did it for a few years and it fried my 🧠.
How do you feel? What is your diet or what to avoid? I’m 31 now and been going through this for years
@rahtaylor7651 In the beginning, it felt like torture not being able to eat anything.
@@Zuluchild89 thanks for this. Btw what did you eat through a straw
This 'mind/gut' connection sounds nice, but it's obvious the science is still lacking in this area, so it feels like a way to stifle the conversation into investigating a patient's problems by throwing SSRIs at them that probably won't work
So what kind of anxiety is this if it's not categorized as health anxiety? I don't think its generalized anxiety either.

My brain immediately convinces me that death is knocking.
Also can we just take a minute to appreciate how fluent she is and very well spoken 👍🏾 No mistakes LOLOL instantly subscribed
She's an educated woman, I sure hope she is.
Fluent? Plenty of black women in America are highly educated and sophisticated. Not sure what that's supposed to mean. 🤔🤔🤔
As a demographic, black women are the top group seeking higher education.
I figured out she’s reading off the screen using an app called teleprompter or something. The content is pre-written and presented most professionally, indeed!
😐 ...... wow.
This was excellent. Wish we had more doctors like her.
I always feel like I will always be in pain, and my brain has done a very good job of creating barriers to keep that way of thinking in place and they are so incredibly hard to take down…
I’m so sorry, hope it gets better soon.
Having same issue as yours!! Don't worry you're not alone♥️
Did you get checked? Endoscopy and colonoscopy?
I have uper stomac swelling so much stomac pain blotingg

I really enjoyed this. I don’t have these specific issues but it’s still amazing to learn about how powerful our minds are
Yes its our minds divided by 2
I tried to do some research on Google and I pretty have a bad health anxiety and I thought I had Colon cancer or something.
I'm going through everything you just described
Myself having Gastritis combined with Anxiety. Sometimes I am having severe stomach pain and had my endoscope.

My story
Keto, unexpectedly, reduced the majority of my anxiety.
This information is so needed. It helps a lot of people having gerd and anxiety at the same time. Thanks a lot. Today I feel the same gerd and anxiety and I saw your video. I will see a doc for my gerd first. Thankyou for putting this video ❤️
This video saved my life three years ago. I wanted to come back and thank you. I can live again.
How did you do it
Hi, Tracey, I can't help but cry when watching this video because this has been my own experience since early 2019.

Thanks for sharing this video 💛
i think i have as same you get , do you have to take any anxiety med to help your anxiety .i did
@@Bryan-il1vu I did not have to take any medications for my anxiety. I was able to heal myself through natural methods. Anxiety medications can be a helpful tool for some, it just wasn't for me, though. I'm wishing you all the best 💛

Don't do antidepressants. Dangerous
Yes Yes Yes. ‼️‼️ I love that you made this video!! I’ve been trying to explain the importance of the digestive system and how it connects to anxiety and depression‼️
You are THEE BEST ❣️
Whenever I have anxious thoughts I notice that I'm usually hungry, and I immediately calm down after I'm full. So I have to remind myself to eat or take care of myself in any way.
Lol i'm also often just hungry when i'm falling to the depressive thinking patterns. This adhd is kinda dumb though, but yea, i'm getting better with selfcare i guess
Today was a good day c:
Hi🙋🏻♀️ currently being treated by a holistic Dr and gi surgeon
Your might have a blood sugar issue. Ask your dr about it. Hy hypoglycemia and pre diabetes can cause your symptoms.
@@avill012 hmm i started again with this food tracker thingy today. So, i'm very sure, i lack quite a bit ressources. Uhm and low sugar looks a lot different for me xD
Well, most of my heavy tiredness problems are related to a bunch of low ressources.
@tracy Star that's not what i meant.

Great information
I was diagnosed with Celiac in my forties, I am in my sixties. It took me decades to realize how much my feelings were affected by my gut.
It's funny how this things affect our physical body..
I have been diagnosed with Dysthymia and ADHD and social anxiety..I get mad all the time for no reason and I lack social skills because of the anxiety
I live in Michigan….suffering for awhile now but didnt realize how serious I may have it until recently - probably bc of @self medicating” with alcohol

Anything special you did to get rid of it?
@@soberanisfam1323 Idk it kinda just gradually went away when I started taking better care of myself both physically and mentally. I think it was a combination of reducing my stress load and cutting back on acidic and spicy food (which was hard cause I love jerk chicken 😋🌶).
So glad SLF4ever 👍🏽😊
Good info. I’ve experienced this. My anxiety causes acid reflux, and my acid reflux causes more anxiety.
Hi Jason!
