-- Vagus Nerve Exercises To Rewire Your Brain From Anxiety --
If you’re someone who frequently struggles with anxiety -- or even just worried thoughts -- you might think your brain is broken.
    Not true.
Anxiety is actually a survival mechanism.
It tells you when you’re in danger -- or at least when your nervous system believes it is.
Anxiety tells you to step away from a high cliff edge so you don’t fall to your death. It warns you when a person has bad intentions (usually we call this intuition).
But we can experience anxiety in situations where we are actually safe -- and that’s when it becomes a problem.
In these cases, your nervous system has gotten “stuck” in danger mode. The whole world suddenly looks like it’s out to get you.
    Cue the anxiety!
This is a big problem because “danger” can look like making new friends or business connections.
It can mean putting yourself out there for a promotion or going for a big new client.
It can shake your confidence -- literally, by giving you the jitters -- before your big competition.
Anxiety can tell you to stay small, play it safe, keep to your lane -- when what you really want is to reach for the stars.
Most anxiety treatments focus on changing your thoughts -- thinking positively, using affirmations, etc.
Or, they might suggest taking a deep breath (hard to do when your diaphragm is frozen in fear -- and yes, this happens).
What we really need are methods to jolt your nervous system out of danger mode and back into safe and happy mode (assuming you’re not actually in physical danger, of course).
This doesn’t happen at the thought level -- it happens in your biology.
In your autonomic nervous system, to be exact.
Your vagus nerve is part of your autonomic nervous system and functions to help your body deal with stress.
This video gives you three vagus nerve exercises to rewire your anxious brain and bring you back to a centered state.

You may want to caution those with a history of stroke not to do any extreme head/neck positions. Ischemic strokes can be caused by arterial dissection, which occurs when a small tear forms in the innermost lining of the artery wall. Extreme neck positions and manipulations -for example, sitting reclined in a ‘shampoo chair’ at a salon, or having chiropractic neck manipulations- have been linked to an increased risk of stroke.

As a board certified physician with many years of experience, i appreciate these exercises. All doctors see anxious patients. All doctors need to know non-pharmacological interventions such as these.

Hi Gene, I was impressed by your desire to utilize some non-pharmacological interventions. Just to let you know, most licensed psychotherapists (such as myself) use a multi-modal approach to the treatment of anxiety disorders and therefore will teach/practice 'somatic' and body centered interventions with their patients (such as those in this video) in addition to traditional relaxation training and the more 'cognitive components' of psychotherapy. Most therapists are also happy to collaborate with the patient's medical doctor, and you may find that referring to a therapist may increase your ability to provide complete care which (based on your comment) is important to you. If you are interested I'd be happy to give you some info to help you form such professional relationships in your area. Very warmly, Sara

I’ve had anxiety for 30 years and chronic anxiety for the last 5 years now, and not one single doctor said anything about the vagus nerve. The only thing that helped me was to jump in a cold shower and I never understood why. It affected my whole life. I can never predict an attack so I can’t get a job. I can’t just run and have a shower in the middle of hosting dinner, or 5 times a day at work. I’ve never had anxiety explained like this and it seems to all make sense now. I tried the exercises and they very much calmed me. I’m waiting to try it when I have a bad attack but you have given me hope!

This is the first time I have EVER heard someone say anxiety has a physical aspect to it. I've been told it was all in my head and if I could think it through I could fix it OR a pill could fix it. On my own I've learned to handle it over the years. When I discovered the vagus nerve, it was an eye opening, ah-ha moment, because one of my symptoms when anxiety was triggered flashed though that pathway like an arrow to my solar plexus. When I put 2 and 2 together it was a light bulb, life changing moment. Never have I considered there was actual exercises I could do that would help to physically release the iron fist that wouldn't let me get anxiety under control. I could feel it a bit the first time when I half heartedly went through the 3 simple exercises. And then later I did them paying more attention. It's amazing that I can physically squeeze the nerve that has been so in control of so many terrible moments in my life. At the very least it's a start. And to think I almost dismissed this video and scrolled on by. I'm looking forward to learning more. You have my undying gratitude ♥️

Know how you literally feel your stomach flip when you get bad news? That's your vagus nerve in action! Direct connection between your brain and stomach. There is so much research occurring around the vagus nerve and we are going to learn much more in the next few years. Did you know that some scientists now believe that Parkinson's actually starts in the gut and travels to the brain via the vagus nerve? It's facinating

@@ursulamackinnon119 I'm sorry! I confused you! I watched her video about manipulating where all that bundle of nerves come together in the center of the chest and took it a step farther. I had forgotten that what I added to her exercises wasn't actually in her video. Again I'm so sorry I confused you. I do do her stretches, but I go a step farther. When something embarrasses me or makes me sad, I get a very distinctive feeling that starts where the bundle of nerves comes together in the solar plexus or heart area. It is an almost electric feeling that runs out my arms and up to my jaws; it is instantly accompanied by intense feelings of sadness or dread. To physically counteract that feeling instead of just letting it control me, I fold in on myself like I had been punched in the solar plexus. After seeing her video I did a lot of research and learned to counter act that feeling by sucking in a huge gulp of air and throwing my chest out, then I immediately blow it out, bowing my shoulders and letting my chest sink in. I might have to do it 3, 4 or 5 times. I'm as she says physically affecting that part of my body. After I do those quick motions to make that part of my body 'get distracted' I do her more simple stretches, which brings things more back into balance. I sure hope I haven't been even more confusing.

Thank you so much, Suki! I’ve been experiencing some uncertainties and it’s been giving me extra anxiety, which among other symptoms, has been tension in my shoulders and the back of my neck. While I did these, the tension eased after each exercise.
I learned from you about it being not just thought based, but that these anxiety symptoms can also be from emotions.

Hi! I'm about to tell you a bunch of stuff you might already know and I'm not sorry because it's important!😂
As a rule of thumb, those are only supposed to last about 30 minutes, so you may have been having back-to-back attacks. If that's common for you, I hope you speak to a physician or psychologist as medication may be necessary, I know it was for me. It's wonderful to know drug free ways to cope, but your quality of life matters and is important for you and those who love you.
Doesn't have to be anything that could potentially really impair you, or a ton of meds a day either. Sometimes a mild antidepressant alone can help a great deal (yes, really!) or even a mild prescription antihistamine less sedative than benadryl. If insurance is a problem sometimes local behavioral health centers have either a sliding scale or will work on getting you help with insurance while also providing care until it comes through.
I apologize for the unsolicited advice, but it might help someone if not you and your comment reminded me of myself and what I wished I had known WAY sooner. No one should have to suffer and I wish you good health overall! 🙂

Tilting the head and looking up in the opposite direction is really releasing stuff!!! I set a stop watch and just let it happen, it’s amazing how much my body would fight it or lose focus and wouldn’t even look in the correct place. I just relaxed into it and let it happen. 6 minutes later I’m releasing toddler age trauma I had completely forgotten about.

If you need some more methods, another free one is EFT tapping. Very easy and can/should be done many times. Brad Yates has numerous videos on different subjects. Just watch, tap where he taps and repeat the phrases, simple as that. It's supposed to allow people to release or reprogram what isn't working for them, affecting the subconscious mind (where programs are stored). Some of them we don't even know about, but they are there and playing constantly.

I've only recently realized that there was childhood trauma that I needed to work through in my life. However, I've had a lifetime of living in a body that is constantly alert, on edge and trying to contort itself into the fetal position at all times. Two months ago I had a hernia surgery and the moment I came to I felt a brief instant of calm and living in a relaxed body which was immediately followed by extreme body contractions and muscle spasms. As soon as I heard you reference this in your video I knew I had found exactly what I was looking for. I was right! After only 2-3 weeks of doing your exercises everyday I had a release in my sacrum last night while laying in bed. I didn't move for 20 minutes because I was afraid it would all come back. Then my entire body just let go. I'm not tense, alert and on edge at all times. I'm not involuntarily holding my breath. I did some research and my hypothesis is that I was locked in the freeze response and stored the trauma in my S1, S2, S3 area. Your video has helped me move that trauma and changed my life! I'm already trying to spread the word and cannot wait to learn more!

I've been in a state of complete panic and fight or flight the last 1.5 weeks and stumbled across this video this morning and felt immediate relief with even the first exercise. Incredible. I have nothing against medications as some people really need them but for me personally I'm trying to avoid it as they've worked against me in the past. I'm all about the natural path. Agree with you 100% about the just change your thoughts BS! There's so many books that instruct to do that, and mindfulness methods and breathing methods, and on and on. The brain needs the rewiring and the cause behind the tension needs to release! There are programs for rewiring too, but they say to think happy thoughts, pleasant thoughts, and on and on. It's in the body, and these are very interesting techniques. On the first side bend one, I started rapid breathing and something was happening. I'm going to go back to it. But my neck really hurts on the left side from bending to the right, even bending just a little bit. Doing that has made it a lot more painful. Thank you Sukie, you're very knowledgeable.

Changing thoughts can absolutely decrease anxiety and stress. I have anxiety which gives me an upset stomach. In moments where I am mindful, the anxious thoughts and stomach issues go away. When I start getting anxious and focusing on my stomach, the pain comes back. Its all about how we think. Where the mind goes, energy flows.

The entire experience for me was like the most intense EMDR session I ever had and at the end I actually had to deal with the fact that I have spent decades in a state of constant physical stress and anxiety using EMDR to process on the emotion of sadness and loss. I literally cried harder than I ever have and at the same time felt more at peace than I can ever remember. Having suffered from a traumatic brain injury that was left undiagnosed for 30 years there is a huge amount of social and relational stress that has built up in my body. I've spent the last 2 years in therapy using EMDR which has been absolutely phenomenal but I have found that there were things that I could not penetrate and it seems like this is something that is going to help me to move into those areas and realize more success. It was interesting how similar these exercises impacted me compared to EMDR. I proceeded to sleep for a couple of hours after using the exercises for the first time just like I would experience with EMDR.
