    She was a lovely woman. My dad took me to her restaurant when I was about 12 years old. I grumbled that my gumbo didn't have enough shrimp. The waitress must have mentioned my comment to Miss Chase who then came out from the kitchen and told me "you get what you get.". She laughed at the look on my face and then proceeded to add more shrimp to my dish. Then she sat down and chatted with us for a while. She was so interesting and her knowledge of New Orleans cuisine and history was fascinating. She was an American treasure .

    As a little girl my grandparents took me to Dooky Chase at least once a month. Mrs. Leah was always kind, funny and made time to come say hello. My family loves to tell the story of how I fell asleep at the table and Mrs. Leah had them make me a little cot out of tablecloths and let me sleep on it while the adults ate. I haven’t been in years but I wish I’d had the chance to see her one last time. She is greatly missed by the people of New Orleans and will always be the Creole Queen. R.I.P. Mrs. Leah Chase❤️❤️

    Making gumbo is truly a labor of love. I learned from my grandmother, who is from Louisiana. My mother moved north to Buffalo, NY with the gumbo recipe and now I make it annually for my entire huge family from scratch. Including ordering spices from Louisiana and mixing my own as well. My northern counterparts now joke that I should open a gumbo shop and sell it. LOL. Thanks Grandma!

    She seems like she's the elderly grandma who EVERYONE, loved, respected, admired, and revered. It's amazing that she continued to be so active even into her mid-to late 90's. I like how the young man interviewing Mrs. Chase was also wearing a nearly identical shade of pink to match her chef's coat and how much he clearly enjoyed having the opportunity to sit down and share a meal with her. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

    The amount of cultures that come together in this one dish is amazing. I worked at a Creole restaurant in my hometown in North Carolina for two summers during High School and their gumbo was one of their best dishes. I really have to make my way back down to Louisiana to really experience this wondrous food from the source alongside just experiencing the people and culture there. Being a white person in the United States makes you forget how amazing some cultures in your own nation are. This channel is just amazing. I can't wait to see what dish is next, perhaps Jambalaya. Thanks for creating.

      It's good you want to learn about different cultures, you should start with yours. White doesn't have culture, but Italian does, french does, russian does, Irish does, scottish does, hungarian does, german does, Dutch does, Polish does, Romanian does, Australian does, dutch does, belorussian does, Austrian does, Bosnian does, Serbian does, Croatian does, ukrainian does, Jewish does, Swiss does, Swede does, Norwegian does, kiwis do, finnish do, scandanavian do, czech do, and even many people that look and classify as white actually have ancestry from latin cultures such as Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Uruguay, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and others that look white and don't know their personal history have bloodlines from around the Mediterranean such as Greece, Turkey, Jordan and others. Then even many subcultures within each of these. I'm sure you know this and it isn't meant to offend you. It's just that acting like all white people are the same and have the same history is a problem, not all of us have the British roots that most associate with the term white people that colonized the U.S.

      @Audrey Palmer shame on you for not be able to comprehend my comment. The OP stated that being white in the U.S. makes you forget all the cultures. I stated that white isn't a culture. Scotish is a culture, Irish is a culture, English is a culture but being white is not. So then tell me what YOU do to celebrate either of these cultures you're willing to get on here and berate me over please.

    The Dooky Chase needs to be saved as a historical monument in the Treme yesterday, if it already hasn't. I was so fortunate to visit in 1999 on an extended weekend as a Marine stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. To know the history of that place, some of the people who came through and some of the change that was fostered in those walls for America, not just black people...incredible. And I haven't even talked about the food. The gumbo was so good, I was trying to take bowls back to the barracks! Losing Mrs. Chase wasn't just a loss for the incredible city of New Orleans, but Black America.

    I’m a Creole from New Orleans and there’s never corn in Gumbo. It’s mostly a dish of an African origin. The slaves brought over the technique from west Africa. Other ingredients were added due to being in Louisiana.

    I wish you had made this video when I was arguing with them Cajuns on Facebook via Munchies, talking about Gumbo came from their culture. I had to correct them to let them know Cajuns were white Canadians who got kicked out or fled to Louisiana territory. Gumbo was already there. So I wish I had these historical facts to argue the origins more thoroughly. And, I never knew veal was used in gumbos. Learning is infinite.

      Dee Mills That doesn’t seem right at all. The Europeans came to these places before the enslaved Africans were brought in and the Acadians where some of the first Europeans to arrive in Louisiana. Gumbo may very well be MOSTLY african. But like pretty much everything from Louisiana, it has origins in all sorts of different cultures. . .and it almost certainly came about well after the Cajuns arrived.

    • @krisC2U
      @krisC2U 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dee Mills my daughter’s people are Acadian... they lost all of their culture because the stayed in upstate New York. Hid their heritage because the Acadians were kicked out of Canada. My daughter’s great grandfather let folks think he was Irish by changing his name to Malley from Mallois.
      Interesting history that I learned while helping my baby do a family tree.
