  • ---------------------------------------------------------
    INGREDIENTS for the Berta Jay's
    Caramelized Balsamic Onions
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    ½ cup water
    Pour into a skillet/pan
1 medium/onion (12½ inch circumference) sliced in half
Cut the halves into ¼ inch slices; separate the half rings
Bring the water to the boil
Place the rings into the boiling water; bring the water back to boil
Put on the lid and cook onions for 9 minutes.
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (I used 1 tablespoon each brown and white vinegar)
    Set aside
Remove the lid and stir onions for 7 minutes
Pour the vinegar over onions (if you DON'T like vinegar, just continue to stir the onions another 2 minutes until they are caramelized and you're done); otherwise,
Continue to stir onions with the vinegar for another 5 minutes until browned and caramelized
    That's it!

My objective for this channel is to share with others what I have learned over the last 30+ years about living and eating healthier. I share my knowledge with my small circle of friends all the time. I am not a doctor, nor do I hold any type of medical degree, but I believe that my tried experiences may help someone else.
For over 30 years I have used every diet imaginable to lose weight, but I confess that I am now at home using the vegan lifestyle. I want to share what I have learned about eating and enjoying food. And, since I am still learning how to be more consistent with this lifestyle, I have decided to eat more healthily, realizing the weight will come off eventually. Though I have not reached my goal weight, I know that sharing with other people in front of a camera with help me to stay on course.
I have, with the help of my husband of 37 years, raised 3 grown children. I will also share some cooking shortcuts as well as some natural formulas I have used and still use for everyday problems.

Caramelized onions are so dee-lish on so many things. My Dad loved them on his steak, which he & Mom had every Saturday night. They always fed the 6 of us kids early, then they had their own dinner & "date night" [at home of course] a little later. I can still remember the scent of the onions frying in the cast iron skillet, while Dad grilled the steaks outside [even in the Winter]. After a while they started having onions & mushrooms on their special Saturday night meals. I bet Dad would have loved these balsamic onions too. Keep those recipes coming, Berta - and thanks!

Thanks Berta! What a great idea! We love browned onions, but I've never thought to use balsamic. I have used balsamic on roasted vegetables, Jamie Oliver put me onto it, it's fantastic and he uses a lot when he does it, it sort of looks too much, the way he does it but it turns out well.
I also I have seen it used in a Bolognese sauce. I guess it's as sort of a wine substitute?, and it works really well. I use a organic brown balsamic a really nice mellow one it's not too tart.

I'll need to find it and get rid of it then I can ask a again. It was a special request through TH-cam. No worries. I'll figure it out. I will take some time though. How are you doing?

Put those caramelized onions on carrots dogs!😏

Oh, my, Vegan...you are so right! I want to try that this week. I know that would be delish. I usually put plain chopped onions on my carrots dogs, along with other condiments; but these onions would really be good! Thanks so much for this idea. You're a gem! 😉

I add caramelized onions over a cold salad - yum, yum, yum. I learned this from my stepdaughter who is a fabulous cook !

    How long does it keep

    • @bertajay
      @bertajay  3 ปีที่แล้ว

They keep for at least a week in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Put them in the back of your refrigerator so the warm air doesn't hit the container every time you open your fridge door. Okay. I don't know if they'll last longer 🤔 because I have always eaten them up by that time. Sorry. 😕
