How to replace the Exhaust Manifold Gaskets Ford 289 or 302

  • I had been hearing what sounded like an exhaust leak, specifically from the driver's side. In this video I remove the headers to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets, hoping this will fix the leak. In the end I was not convinced that I fixed the sound I was hearing, but I did discover that the gaskets needed replacing anyways.

    Two things, Andy. Invest in some Remflex gaskets for your headers. They are thicker than those thin exhaust gaskets you put in, and will last for quite awhile. I discovered them a few years ago and won't use anything else. You'll want the Remflex 3003. To tighten down the exhaust system without fighting either end is to put the header in place at the head with the gasket. Start the bolts by hand but do not tighten any of them. Just get all 8 of them started a few threads to hold the gasket and header in place. Then go below and install the header collector to the remainder of the exhaust. With the headers loose on top, this will give you enough play below so you don't have to fight them. Same thing...don't tighten the collector bolts yet. Go back up top, tighten the header/head bolts to their proper torque and then back below and tighten the header collector/exhaust bolts. You'll get a workout, but you won't be fighting parts that don't line up properly right away. Good job!

      I'll have to check out those gaskets, thanks! Thanks for the heads up on the manifold install. Sometimes I get ahead of my self and don't stop and think about the easiest way to install something, sometimes it's "finish this side first" type of mentality and I know that it may not always be the best way. :)

      I've had really good luck with the Remflex Gaskets (part no. 3029) I know I discuss the Fel-Pro gasket in this video, but since then I have found I like the Remflex units better. :)

    Hey Andy were you getting a lot of exhaust smell before this? I've got a 66 fastback and I think I'm going to need to do this to mine. I smoke machine traced a leak to either the manifold gasket or first spark plug on passenger side. I cant tell exactly. Thanks for the video!

    • @AndyKruseChannel
      @AndyKruseChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I could smell the exhaust, and hear a chuffling sound too. Thankfully exhaust gaskets are cheap, but the install process can be a pain. If you're taking recommendations, I'd say to the the Remflex gaskets, part number 3029, and the run about $30. :)

    You got them all out in 10 minutes? That's at least 3 times as fast as I've got it done before. Hopefully the 7/16 bolts with the Allen heads in the middle will make it easier.

      Over two classic Mustangs, and five different headers, I've found that making plans to do something around the time I plan to remove the headers is not wise. Sometimes I can get to the bolts quickly (putting on or taking off) and sometimes the Header Gods say "not today". It's weird with this tiny engine bays. :)

    • @BPattB
      @BPattB ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndyKruseChannel "tiny" is the word, although when my neighbor with a 67 Camaro makes remarks about the size I just tell him that Ford never wasted anything even space. Unlike your Camaro with a 350 that has 2 feet on either side. I would never admit it to him, but yeah that much space would be nice.

    Did you ever solve the exhaust leak *tick*?

    • @AndyKruseChannel
      @AndyKruseChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there were holes in the manifold that I had welded up. But, in the end I put on new Long Tube Headers that were brand new, so no issues with ticking. :)

      @@flyYyify On this car I put on some Summit Racing, 4 to 1, Ceramic coated headers. I got them for a really good deal, they fit fantastic, but they hung too low for my liking. I eventually sold this car, but on my next car I elected to go with some JBA Shorty headers.

      Lol right! I just noticed the guy that put the headers on my car used 7/16 bolt heads with Allen heads in the middle. I went through and checked them last night and I had a few I was able to take up on. As long as they are a quality bolt they shouldn't strip,,,, I hope. It did make it a lot easier to get to them.

    Great video as always Andy! Just to verify - there’s no need to use any additional sealants like Permatex or gasket maker on the new seals? I’ve watched a few of these now and some folks are using an orange-ish/red gasket spray/sealant in addition to the new metal gasket as well. Need to get this done on my ‘65 i6 - pretty sure I’ve got some leaks…thanks again!

      My muffler shop guy does not recommend using sealant on these gaskets. I don't think it hurts anything to add it, but he told me to slap on some new gaskets and go. :)
