What Makes Goalkeepers Good in FM?

This is one of the first tests I dreamed up for Football Manager and I’m finally bringing it back for FM21. Which attributes are the most important for goalkeepers in football manager? I had some theories going into it, about positioning, reflexes, and agility, which had all affected my scouting in FM in the past, but crunching some numbers never lies. Especially when FM is a game run off attributes that are all spreadsheets and numbers in the first place.
The test itself obviously has some flaws. The standard of deviations that FM simulations like this have is pretty wide, which the 10 attempts and total points/goal difference is set up to compensate for. There are also attributes for goalkeepers that do nothing for them in football manager, providing something of a placebo test to see the range that keepers with 10 in all-important attributes tend to fall into. That range was solidly wide, but general trends in attribute importance can be picked up, which is what I love. So yes, I know this isn’t a good enough test to write an academic paper on, but it’s cool and fun and tells us a bit about keepers in FM21.

You should also do one were you set the attribute to 1 instead of 20 so you get an idea of which attribute you can not be without. It would be interesting to see how the table changes

I assure you if you play any kind of modern pressing tactic, it's one on ones, reflexes, rushing out, agility and positioning. getting a goalkeeper who excels inn those will give you save percentage of 85%+ and they will save many expected goals per season.

I played a journeyman save in FM 20 and when I was managing Boudreaux I had a keeper named Vanja Milinkovic Savic (he plays in Italy IRL) who has really high strength and aerial reach and average stats everywhere else. He was the most dominant keeper I’ve ever had, even winning World goalkeeper of the year on my team and it completely changed what I look for in a keeper. I’m so glad tests back that up!
Vanja Milinkovic Savic was a beast in my FM 19-20 saves as well. I like the typical Big Guy GK like him, too bad I can only loan him since I played poor team ( Brescia saves)
Vanja is the brother of Sergej Milinković Savić, who's also a beast in FM
Vanja was the GK for the Serbia squad that won the U21 or U23, don't remember which, world cup title a few years back
tendency to punch may also be affected by the other attributes being 10, so they may be more prone to making mistakes more often than in a normal situation. maybe it's better to have a high tendency to punch on low-skilled goalkeepers, so they are less likely to attempt something they can't pull off, and vice versa on high-skilled goalkeepers.

Zea test here is isolating attributes from each other , while in reality, attributes contribute to each other.
i always go for a keeper with high one on ones and reflexes - might have to add in some other key criteria now
I just go with positioning
I tend to go for reflexes, handling and communication. To try and have the keeper be able to react and hold the ball well enough to deny second chances to the opponents that might happen via corners or the ball going back to them after a save. While organising the defence so that less chances happen.
I was the same, I always put those values in when filtering. One day you know ...
So many one-on-ones happen in FM it seems like it just has to be important, but in reality that's a situation that almost always favors the outfield player so a keeper being good is just going to make a save like 12% of the time instead of 9% of the time. That may be the difference in one game between one point and three points, or one point and none points, but it's not likely to win a trophy.
I think that the reason tendency to punch is so high is because the other goalkeepers (apart from 1) had a 10 in handling and a 10 in tendency to punch. So they tried to catch the ball more even though they are not very good at it.
I like this way of thinking - I imagine certain attributes have more value when used in conjunction with another attribute. Maybe 15 Agility and 15 Reflexes would beat out 20 Aerial Reach?

That’s why these tests are more for interest and entertainment but it’s so much more complicated than this

you'd be better making their attributes all high and give each a weakness and see what is the worst to find the most important
Zealand a proposition for a more scientific approach: Do 10 or 20 random goalkeepers with different attributes. The simulate with each one like 10 or 20 seasons. The you could use a Program like Stata to run a (linear) reggression which could tell you for example over the course of a season how much points the team would have had if for example reaction stat increases by 1 and you could also see which attributes arent even stat. Significant.

Strength attribute will be high because for goalkeepers it determines how far they can throw the ball.
I loved the editing that Ayal and Sam did, the edits were great and it was nice to have a different style of editing on the channel. But man its great to have Reece the G.O.A.T back on the channel.
Ideas to improve the test
1. Do the opposite - All attributes at 20 except the one tested
2. Check tendency attributes the other way around (i.e. at 1 instead of 20)
3. Since it is goalkeepers, instead of GD I belive the total conceded goals is more interesting
Quality video mate, glad you did a position that has such a massive influence in a game, and something that can make a huge difference in terms of what to look for when signing a player that you can only play in one available position for your team.

Yes, this is great content to know about goalkeepers. It is really worth looking for goalkeepers with very high aerial reach because they can save you a lot of trouble especially when the opponent strikers try to do the long shots.

Zealand i just found a way that you can see who puts the players in the scout meeting !!! When you receive the scout report on the top left coner there is a list button , pres it , then there is a type column and you can sort by that and see you put that player in your scout meeting !

Though I haven't seen it explained anywhere, I think it's logical to assume, that Aerial Reach also affects goalkeeper reach when diving to stop shots on goal, and not only his reach when jumping straight up for crossed balls. That should explain why it was so dominant, as it's essential for sopping dificult shots, which often makes a difference between winning a game and losing it.

Holy shit. Won the league and my GK retires. Buy the keeper that helped Napoli win serie A. 24yo, great attributes, great stats from last season, first two games of new season I lose because EVERY shot on target against me is a goal! Fined him 2 weeks wages and listed him due to a rage fit

I have always looked for reflexes, one on ones and agility and im still going to look for them
it depends on your tactic. if you play a high line, one on ones and reflexes will matter more
Acceleration was always a key attribute for a keeper even in the Dark Ages of Champ Manager/ FM05, it affected how often 'through balls' would be swept up by a proto- Neuer type or picked up by the intended forward target. It might have had a small effect on how effective the player was at dealing with crosses also.
you could do a test where you give a goalkeeper 20 in the top 5 attributes and 10 for everything else and put them in various different teams and levels to see how they perform, it would be interesting to see if playing in a more physical league or more technical league impacted how they do for example :)
Sorry, I don’t know if I missed it, but maybe is it possible one on ones, for example, was so low because of the tactic? Like if it’s a goalkeeper on defend versus a sweeper keeper on attack, one on ones would be valued differently between both

from 2007 to now, in my experience command of area and communication were the two strongest. seemed to make the entire defence perform better, so even if a goalkeeper didnt perform aswell in terms of match rating the team never conceeded as much. but they still performed better

Would have loved if you used the teams xG conceded vs goals conceded to see the xG prevented by GKs (Should be it if all the the strikers finishing abilities are the same). Would be a little more scientific i guess. Great vid anyways 👍

I have a 6'7" Korean regen GK with 19 in communications and Aerial Reach and he's a monster, is incredibly injury prone however so even as good as he is now i dont think he's in his prime yet, dont even think he'll actually reach his peak sadly.
Great video Zealand. It would be interesting to know what tactics the AI teams use against your side. Maybe they love crossing into the box a lot hence why aerial reach did so well?
He said all the managers had the same tactics and preferred formation. I would guess it was just a very balanced 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 with minimal instructions for all teams.

For goalkeepers i always used to pay attention solely to the good ones in terms of CA/PA with high-ultra high consistency. For the guy who is literally my last line of defence i don't like making some guy my number 1 who is neutral or lower in consistency and/or big matches, leaving as little to chance as possible
i would think the importance of aerial reach depends on the defensive tactic that you play

I think with keepers it depends on how you want to defend but for me my best keepers have always had good stats in these and this is what I look for because I play a sweeper keeper with a high line so I need my keeper in the right place, with a high ability on one on ones, handle the ball easily after making a good reflex save so he doesnt spill rebounds with aerial reach and command of area also important for the occasional crosses. I also dont play a super narrow defence so my defenders do a decent job of covering the wide areas

Edit: Decisions is super important for.my keeper as well cause none of the above matters if he chooses the wrong option about sweeping or staying in his line.

remember if these keepers have 10s across the block, that makes them above average sweeper keepers, or at least when the ball is at their feet. If you wanna shake up the results further a tactic asking the keeper to initiate counter attacks might have only prevalent in some teams, so some would have high key passes regardless of what they had 20 in.

I think one of the best goalkeepers i've had is Jamal Blackman in fm18 (I think, maybe it was an earlier game), he was pretty mediocre for the premier league, but his aerial reach and strength meant he was capable of some amazing saves. I think he only lost his place in the first team when i moved from Rochdale to Liverpool and the AI took over the team and replaced him with a 'better' keeper.

Yesterday i had a VAR check for offside goal and the goal was validated?!?! After 540 hours of playing the game, i swear its the first var offside check that didn't disallow the goal. Was there any update to var recently or did i just get the 1 in 100 case?

I actually don’t think this was a good way to do this, I mean it’s an interesting video but I feel like looking at goalkeeper stats would be better. Because you’re only looking at one position and it’s goalkeepers, I think those stats like save percentage and so on as an average over 10 years would be more indicative of actually how good the attribute is! But anyway, interesting video so thanks for making it!

Your current test only shows what stat is good when playing worse teams.
Please do the test where all stats are 20 for everyone except the stat tested, which is 10.
