The Best Role in Football Manager Is...

  • There are a lot of roles in Football Manager. I have undertaken the herculean task of ranking them all on a table to inform your FM tactic for years to come. This is a purely scientific endeavor that includes no opinion (citation needed). There are, however, so many roles in Football Manager that it can be worth it to go over them all to make sure your tactic does not spontaneously fall apart. This would be something that would ruin your FM save a little more than forgetting to add a match review in training.
    Whether a role is good or not is much more in your use in a tactic and the skill of the player than the actual role itself. You can win the champions league playing with every role in FM, except maybe a libero, but that’s another matter. I’m mainly writing this for the people I refer here from the comment section saying their tactic makes use of five Segundo volante’s and they’ve won all six champions leagues in half a season on FM21, thus I am a fool. First off, congratulations, secondly, please give me your tactic for the next Streamer Showdown, FM21 has been problematic for me on that front.
    Much Love,
    FM Senpai

    Marco Reus was the best Trequartista I ever used. I hopped in a Dortmund save about four years ago to learn how to play the game and he ended leading the league in assists and being fifth in goals with the second highest rating. Ever since I love tactics that utilize it. I think Trequartistas work well in the sense that you need to make sure that you have both enough input going to him and enough places to provide output. They're kind of like a hypermobile enganche. A lot of the attacking play both originates from and is created through a Trequartista so they need to have enough physical ability to move around a lot and enough passing and vision to be a conduit of play AND enough dribbling to run at defenses and draw out defenders /AND/ enough shooting ability to be able to finish /AND/!!! enough mentals to make it all come together properly.
    Complete forward, but for an attacking midfielder/winger. They truly have to be able to do it all in order to be deadly. The reason most people tend to not do too well with a player on Trequartista is that it's a position that needs not just a specific ability but also a tactic that works with it.
    If anyone sees this comment, try putting your Trequartista in the middle with creative people to his left and right, defensive solidity behind, and a finishing-composure first striker up top.
    As your Trequartista ages, they often turn well into first a Raumdeuter and then an Enganche if you can get them to stick around long enough.

      Do you want right footed players playing at left back and left footed players playing at right back?

    • @WizoIstGott
      @WizoIstGott 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheGroundHopper in an ideal scenario yes, you want players with a strong foot opposite to the side they play on in any inverted role (iwb, if, IW).
      But this isn't as important as for classic wing roles. A normal rightback or right winger with a left foot won't be able to run to the line and cross it, an inverted player can still be useful when cutting inside on his week foot. So for these roles a player that has the wrong strong foot but is somewhat competent with his week foot might work just fine

  • @WrapGod1
    @WrapGod1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I really recommend you trying the Wide Playmaker role. It has something unique about it how well it works with an overlapping fullback / wingback. Wide playmaker drifts inside and has an option to play a ball to an overlapping defender, into a channel to striker or stretch play to opposite wing. Despite having 'Shoot less often' hard-baked into its instructions, I still get them to score 10 goals a season with 15 assists to top it off. Very cool role with some unique movement and passing. Works well with a Shadow Striker in the middle, thrives of off players moving into channels and on the wing.
    It's essentially a playmaking inverted winger, which is awesome. You won't see him blast it into the side netting.

    Pressing forwards are the funniest role just for the fact that every now and then they will actually pull off a tackle on the opponents goalkeeper and completely embarass them with the easiest goals you’ve ever seen, idk if this is just applicable to FM19 but i’ve found that inside forwards can be amazing with a strong attacking wingback behind them that likes to get forward(thus the wingback takes on the role of winger) and a single striker system(so the inside forward acts as a second striker when he comes into the center and works alongside the striker)

    One of the best formations I've ever put together was a 4-3-3 with a Treq at CF, an RMD at each wing, and 2 Mezzalas on Attack duty in the midfield ahead of a roaming playmaker at CDM. A complete wingback on each side and 2 BPDs on defend at CB. Attacking mentality. Almost all O, very little D. I was okay with the front 3 doing absolutely NOTHING defensively, but man, could they score. I won some games 8-3 or 7-4, but my objective was to just outscore the opposition. The trequartista scored goals, but he also had plenty of assists due to the mezzalas and RMDs around him. I like using the Treq instead of the F9 in that spot because the Treq is more attack minded. I've never used the Treq role on the wing, just at ST and AMC.

    I absolutely adore RMDs, I have them on both flanks and their penalty earning is astounding. I have this one dude, whose stats are nice but not nearly as stellar as mbappe, but MCity gives 300 million dollars for him even though he had 3 goals and 3 assists after a half of a season.

    Poacher is very useful if you are playing with 2 strikes, in any 4-4-, formation, and you are goal or two behind because he will put the ball in the goal.
    I am using it a lot when I build a squad that is attacking minded, but you need a player with: finishing, first touch, speed and acceleration.

    I have been trying to get the word out on this: if you have a number 8 with the trait "Moves Into Channels," you HAVE TO try him out on Advanced Playmaker on Attack. Also need pace,stamina, crossing and if you want him to score finishing. I play them like a more pulled back wing thats pressure the line and makes a shit ton of crosses central to the strikers.

    I think Trequartista are underrated for Wingers.
    That's the only role that do what i want when i'm in positional play in attack when I have a right winger, right footed, with a right full back "attacking" (same on the left side).
    On the other roles, they keep bumping in eatch other. Trequartista role will put your winger closer to your striker, leaving the wide for you full-back.
    Although most of the wingers are not used to that role, they keep scoring and assisting a lot, especially to each other with wide crosses to the far post.

    A BWM on defence alongside a DLP on support
    Two Wingers on Attacking
    An AF alongside a Poacher

    Agree on Poacher. I remember I had a journeyman career couple FMs ago and I ended at Leicester City. Tried to make a tactic strictly to accommodate Jamie Vardy as a Poacher - didn't turn out well.
    But I disagree on Inside Forwards. After I read some real-life report, that crossing the ball is one of the worst ways to distribute the ball to the penalty box (only like one in 30 crosses lands where it was aimed at and only about one in 90 ends with goal), I deliberately try to avoid crosses as much as I can opting for low drives into the box.

    I have him to move forward and he not only wins a crazy amount of interceptions but does most of them being one of the first players to start pressing and thus winning the ball even around the box after a short goal kick.
    I think the BMW is the prime player in any high pressing team, however, he has to be at least above average and skillfull and calm on the ball.

    Disagree about Complete wing back, got a few saves with Complete wing backs averaging 7.7+ over entire seasons. Think the key with attacking wing backs is having the freedom of the entire flank though. I would place Advanced Playmaker lower on the list though as well, because although we all use them, the role is in some ways too vague and always requires further instruction to maintain consistency. I can really find myself in the ranking, but I do think that most roles do have their use, some on lower level, some on high level. And after all it depends on what player you have. Zealand says it himself, he once had a guy on Wide Target Man that worked, eventhough most midfielders/wingers/... ingame will never be able to perform in it. I've had saves with 2 carrillero's that absolutely killed it, playing Lukaku as a targetman on high level is insane, ... I never use standard tactics, I try to create tactics using the player material there is, and use all different roles, but trequartista, enganche or wide playmaker won't be happening soon.

    I'm that guy here to talk about Wide Playmaker. I had an unbeaten season for the first time with Benfica in FM 19 thanks to Andrija Zivkovic in a wide playmaker role (ML) in a 4-4-2. He played like a hybrid between a left winger and an advanced playmaker. His attributes were perfect for it because he had both the dribbling and crossing of a winger and also the passing and vision of an AMC. Assists, goals, build-up play, he did everything.
    Sadly Zivkovic flopped at Benfica in real life but he was a god among men in FM.
