Why Do You Have 3 Playmakers??? (Saving Your Saves)

- There are a lot of debates on the use of playmakers. Can you have two in FM without blowing up your tactic entirely? Is it possible to win without a playmaker in your team with consistency? What does Football Manager rate playmaker’s match ratings harsher than the Miss Universe competition? Well, these are all fair questions, what is very hard to argue for is the idea that you need THREE playmakers in your squad.
It is just so hard to balance a tactic, to begin with because if you account for everything you’re putting on no pressure, but if you put on the pressure you’re not accounting for something. If you have three people occupied in one job (there’s only one ball) it’s that much harder to get a sound Football Manager tactic set up. I talk about it more in the video, but it’s definitely something a lot of people can accidentally wander into. There’s also plenty of other tactic tips, scouting, player transfers, and such. The classic LOANS and wonderkids galore, all the good stuff.

So im the guy of the morecambe save. Secured avoiding relegation yesterday after winning 19 points in the last 8 games which was nuts. Used the same 4411 tactic but with the ball winning midfielder as DM. I actually have signed like 10+ 16 and 17 year olds already. A lot of tips are actually really useful for next season too, thanks!

My segundo volante scored 23 goals for Birmingham in the champions when my terrible striker only managed to score 5 before I sold him the next window, I really wasn’t going to comment this but when Zealand said: ‘Queue every person that does in the comments’ I just had to
How did he score them? In open play or from set pieces or something?
@@makchot3263 I just made my own comment about them, but here we go. A Volatne is a btb player sitting deeper. If you have a TM or another supporting striker up front, they will retain the ball and pass to the Volante. Your wingers will also look to pass the ball to the edge of the box and this is where your Volantes are waiting. They'll score from set pieces as well as outside the box. Since they are DM's, they stack the centre when defending and on attack they'll arrive late in the box and create some sort of overload.
I play a tactic where I had two of them on attack and a Regista, sometimes an Anchor man and it works well. Give it a try, but you do need very physical players and make sure that they are good at long shots.

I use a 4-3-3 with an attacking mentality and 2 cbs on defend with fewer passing risks instead of bpd cause they keep chucking the ball in the midfield or giving it away easily. 2 wing backs on support with stay wider, a bwm, a bbm, a dlp, 2 inside forwards that sit narrower and the striker roles i keep changing but i mainly use a pressing forward, complete forward or a deep lying forward.
And the team instructions are play narrower cause i used to play with more width but later found out that i win a higher percentage of headers if i start counter pressing with narrower lines when I'm in possession. And then play out of defense and overlap. Mixed crosses and shoot on sight, i didn't choose work the ball into the box in the beginning of games cause i found out the wide players cut the ball back more instead of hitting it straight at the defender. If i put hit early crosses they also keep hitting the ball at the defenders too much so i decided to shoot on sight and if we managed to score some goals i put in on work the ball into the box. Slightly shorter passing and standard tempo.
In transition, counter press, counter, distribute quickly, give to full back and cb and short kicks.
Out of possession, much higher line of engagement and higher defensive line if im using a more physical ST and standard line of engagement and standard defensive lines if I'm using a faster ST and if the opposition striker is faster. Defensive width depends whether the forwards are faster, then its going to be a narrow defensive line and a wider line if the striker is a strong target man. But mainly i use a wider defensive line
And sometimes i use a 5-4-1 and a 4-4-2
@@makchot3263 IMHO there is nothing wrong with your tactic. I think it is the most commonly used tactic. Especially with the combination of a DLP/BtB/BWM. Sometimes I see tactics using a Mezzala on attack instead of the BWM. Other than that it should work very well. Personally I never use a Complete Forward, because you literally need Lewandowski to pull that off and even he does better as a AF. If both of your IF's are on attack, I'd go for a supporting striker like a TM, a F9/DLF or like you do a PF. What also creates a bit of a mismatch for the opponent is having a WB sup/IF at on one side and a WB at/IF su on the other. But it depends on your players.
I often, but not always, try to not have attacking players in front of or next to each other. So no WB on attack and IF on attack on the same side.
The only thing that I'd change is the overlapping instruction. IMHO players do that anyway and with a BtB player inside, you could also see some underlaps. But I guess that is just a preference.
But what you already have, is a great setup. So keep doing what you're doing and tweek small things one at a time to see hoe your players react to it. Depending on the players it can work for you, but not for others.

Exactly. The board will never agree to more staff members unless you fire the ones that are pushint the limit already.
I was gonna say the same. It always rejects requests if you have higher numbers than allowed.

Having lead a Croatian team for 10 seasons now, can confirm two things:
1. WE HAVE WONDERKIDS!
I got...I'd say 2 wonderkid fullbacks, 2 really really good fullbacks, 2 wonderkid strikers, 2 wonderkid DMs, a wonderkid GK, 2 really good wingers(well, inside forwards, really) all from my own youth intake, plus I signed 2 really good to wonderkid strikers from other clubs in the league
...and 2. , release clauses are a pain 🥴 had a Brazilian playmaker whose was valued at...I think he peaked at 8M, with a 9.5M release clause. Guarantee I could have gotten at least 25 to 30 for him otherwise.
Also notably, sold the Brazilian playmaker I replaced him with (XD) for his release clause of 32M, but I'm less annoyed about that one...he was worth a lot more than that, but he played like a beast for the two seasons that he was here, and then got me a net gain of 18M, how bad is that, really?
Anyway, yeah...it's a bit annoying to get offers that would unsettle players if I refuse them (I tend to go the easy route and just accept and replace...), or release clauses in just about every transfer window, but it keeps me busy, and it makes me appreciate the three guys playing their ~6th season here after coming in at 16/17 years old, they're the real troopers 🙏

I think the worst part of managing any team outside of the financially stable ones are the boards going "Wow £25 for Messi at age 19? Better sell..."
Maybe this isn't an issue as much as it used to be on older versions but still.
Think the difference in star rating in the first save is a glitch caused by international management. If you go click and see what their attributes are like in any role it will convert back to the club rating (or at least this is what is happening to me)
Yes i think so too, the first save is mine and it started happening when i started managing the netherlands. Pretty annoying but its not too big of a problem since its fine in the tactics screen
I found that a Deep Lying Playmaker and Advanced Playmaker can work alright together depending on how your team is set up, but more than two PMs makes me anxious that my midfielders will just ping the ball around between each other until one of them makes a mistake. I like DLP and Mezzala cause the Mezzala tends to always run away from the DLP so I feel like it forces them both to make plays for someone who is actually going to attempt to do something with the ball.

The one about the release clauses hits close to home. Had to sell my Argentinian wonderkid Eduardo Moraga to Tottenham early in my Merelinense save in Portugal because of it and he's now the best player in the world. I never quite got another player like him, even though we're now comfortably the best club in the world.
Did you get Merelinense to be the best club in the world without cheating? i am struggling to reach Primeira Divisao with Canelas Gaia...!
@@ruijgil yup. The hardest part is winning the league, the rest will come eventually. Took me about 10 seasons to win the league for the first time. With league and CL money I invested heavily into facilities and wonderkids and voilà, another 10 seasons later I won 3 consecutive CLs and all 7 trophies in a season.
I personally love that narrow tactic, i won the Bundesliga the season after promotion with it

I use Segundo Volante in a 2 dm formation because I heard Spanish commentators say it all the time 😂. It actually works wonders for me in a 4231
That’s one of the most common formations in Brazil.
We usually have 2 DMs. The most defensive one is called Primeiro Volante, and usually play quite similar to an Anchor or BWM. Than we have the Segundo Volante, who usually plays as Regista or the Segundo Volante role the FM21 has.

@@MetricRetr0 Volante literally means "driving wheel".
The reason for this is that the 1st DM usually is the first line of defense and the setter for the attacking phase.
In Brazil we usually played with just 1 DM, that was the volante, while we had wingers and AMs and a classical #10 as the main creative force in the team.
Later on, when tactics evolved and individual creativity was less important than team play, Brazilian teams started using 2 DMs, with one more defensive focused (the traditional volante, but usually playing more a BWM) and a 2nd DM as the transition. This, where teams had a more defensive focus, reactive play.

I've been using the 3-4-1-2 (3 CB, 2 DM, 2 WB, 1 CM, 2 FW) formation with a middle block with Sunderland to good effect. Started as a survival strategy after a promotion, and now the team is build that way. As my wonderkids improved, I kept adding attacking roles.
And yes, Zealand, I sometimes use segundo volante with deep-laying playmaker to break down weak sides.
I ran into that Scouting issue when I started playing in the Serbian SuperLeague with Radnicki Nis. I tore off the band-aid and released all the really bad scouts, got it down under the 5 or 6 limit the board had set - then slowly hired in some marginally better scouts. Now in my 2nd season when I requested to expand my staff the board gave me one more scouting and one more coaching spot.
been playing with 3 midfield playmakers a long time now. Was with the 2020 iteration though. Worked like a charm.
I know this is an old video but another way round the release clause 'issue' is to regularly renegotiate the players contract. As their value/wage/player happiness goes up so does the potential release clause they want to insert - it also has the added bonus of putting off clubs from approaching the player for a short while as they have the just signed new contract bloker

its my save and its the tactic i used to win the championship the previous year so it works pretty well if your players are good enough
it depends though, are you one of the best teams or one of the worst? If you're one of the best teams in the league (check league averages for attributes and such) and expecting promotion, you can definitely be offensive like that. Just don't do it if you're Morecambe in the Prem lol
424 is a nice formation, higher or lower league. You can never edge a victory against Klopp, but if you press the ball from the start, even mighty Reds tremble before you. I did this to Liverpool in league and FA cup final, guess what, Klopp got sacked
I fixed a couple of those not being to upgrade things issues by forcing a takeover to happen via the editor and bringing the owners happiness all the way down. Its better than trashing your save...

I've noticed certain trends in half time and full time team talks - e.g. if I tell the players not to get complacent next match after a big win, where several players are uninterested or complacent, I always get the same two or three players reacting negatively to it, while the rest of the squad reacts positively.
Similarly, if I say "We won but I'm not happy with how you played" after dominating a game that I only win 1-0, my players all respond differently, but I know which ones are likely to have a positive/negative/neutral reaction.
I think this is likely related to hidden attributes - A video about attributes (or any other factors) affecting a player's reaction to a team talk could be interesting, and also quite informative for experienced players, as it could potentially help people to determine their player's hidden attributes.
Give the Segundo Volante some love. I love this role as their are essentially BtB midfielders, just from a deeper position. Put them on Attack and give them a TM or another striker on a supporting role up front to hold and pass the ball to them and you're in for a lot of counter attacking goals as well as a lot of shots from outside the box. One of the most underutilized roles in the game. Especially for underdog teams, they are a weapon.
Yeah, they're basically a box to box midfielder who will also come back to do headers like defenders.
It's fairly ridiculous if you put a strong tall athletic player with high work rate. A bit like a "complete midfielder".

Segundo volante is my favorite midfield position to use in my tactics since FM19 I have 2 volante on attackand one attacking midfield on attack aswell.I score so many goals from midfield.I normally never worry if my stiker has a bad game.

the narrow 41212 is one of my go tos and I usually use 2 mezzalas on attack and generally counterattack with them b/c they (along with the cam) usually are all good ball carriers
I completely agree with the winger goal situation because it’s fascinating to me bc I’m using Arsenal who has Smith-Rose, Saka, Martinelli, and Pepe and to me the only consistent goal scorer is Pepe when he isn’t hurt bc I have Smith-Rowe as a CAM most of the time I have Pierre Emerick as a backup for the wing and striker position and he’s a nice option but I can’t see him staying that way forever, Martinelli is sometimes the same as Pepe bc he gets injured for either a few days or a few months if I’m unlucky but he shows flashes of brilliance from time to time even as a backup an example for me is when he scored a goal in at least three games consecutively with a broken wrist but he can also slump really bad and not score or assist but he’s 21 so it’s all good for now, Saka on the other hand is 3 and a half winger on the left side a 4 star on the right but I can’t do that bc Pepe is there so he’s on the left side and he gets injured every now and then but he’ll just go into long slumps every once in a while and he’s not the most consistent player but he’s good when he’s on it and fortunately for me even though in my save he’s recovering from an injury I have a 25 year old Croatian player called Nikola Vlasic who is like Smith-Rowe as he can play on the left side and in the center even though I use him as a CAM it’s also a good option and if the situation gets worse and I have Smith-Rowe not in a good condition and Vlasic is hurt I can take my starting striker who won the World Cup, World Cup golden boot, and Part of the World Cup dream eleven team striker 21 year old Dutchman Myron Boadu can play as an AM in all sides so I can move him to CAM and have Pierre start as striker I don’t know why Arsenal has this as I haven’t even mentioned another winger and AM I have on loan or the strikers I have on loan
I actually usually play a 4-3-3 with 3 playmakers and it's doing good most of the time, especially that I do something similar to a tiki-taka. The 3 playmakers are in one line - the defensive roaming playmaker is not behind the other two playmakers (one attacking and one supporting) in terms of positioning them on the tactics view, probably the positioning doesn't make a huge change but I noticed that they play better this way.
WISH I could get an 'unexpected promotion.' Promoted after one season from English Div 2 to Div 1 (proud of that considering the $10k transfer budget) but now I'm getting slapped around. :)
I wish I knew that I could send it glitches at my Luton FM20 save I won multiple Champion's Leagues and I can't ask for a new stadium, we have Champions League nights in front of 20 000 😭

I always preffer three in midfield where i have two playmakers, one at DMC or AMC position and the other MC. The third guy which is MC i like to play him Mezzala most of the times.
with the lech poznan save. i had a similar issue with a save in Scotland i did. i re made third lanark into a mighty force. but i solved the release clause issue by buying and selling on so many players to my neighbours in the scottish leagues lol. i single handedly over 12 years increased the reputation and quality of the scottish prem. we got those sweet 4 champs lg spots and suddenly everyone wanted to come😁that was on fm 20. good times.
I always put optional contract extension clause by club on players contract so that they can’t leave on a free unless I want them to.😈
The issue with the stars in the morecambe save is because of him managing the dutch national team, same thing happened to me when i took the spain job, i guess its something to do with the national team setting the ‘star standard’ higher and its slightly bugged so it shows there. idk if i explained that well

my most successfull selfcreated tactic was a 4-3-3 with two dms, one volante on attack. opposing team just couldnt get a grip on him
With the Eibar tactic, surely it's a bit counter intuitive to play roles like Complete Forward and Mezzala in a very narrow tactic, isn't it? The mezzala explicitly is told to drift wider and the complete forward has the 'roam from position' instruction on by default, but what room are you allowing them to roam around in? An Advanced Forward would be better wouldn't it?
curious if it does work - I always prefer wider tactics, but those roles on a very narrow tactic seem strange to me
Narrow tactics doesnt mean that the players cant play wide, they are just staying closer to eachother
I have something similar with my utrecht save, won the league but cant increase my scouts above the default amount so not the only one there for that. (btw how would you go about sending ur save in for bugs)

3 playmakers does work but you need to follow the rules of one holding, one eating space and one providing dynamic runs. So DLP defend, roaming playmaker, AP attack. Basically DM-D, B2B, CM-A. That's how I try to build my midfield, put the B2B type on the side of the more offensive full back. If you want a Regista I find you either go full roaming two Infront such as B2B and mezzala, or go two hardworking midfielders such as bwm-S and B2B or CM-s and Carrillo or a combo should work. Tbh just copy AC Milan side between 05-07 and you'll be sorted

I've regularly played with 3 playmakers(dlp support, dlp defend, advanced playmaker attack) and have won multiple titles and champions leagues with underpowered teams.

You can't expand the scouting team if you have more ppl than already allowed, if he fired his scouts until he only had 6 left he could ask for more and they'd allow it
is it possible for players to be glitched in fm 21? Ive got an Advance Playmaker that just wont hit any key passes/assist, hes got 18 Passing, 16 tech, 16 teamwork, and 16 vision but hes just passing sideways, Ive found it quite strange because ive played a diff player with worse playmaker attributes but is hitting those key passes/assist
Trying a sort of building a nation save with Iceland. We make the Champions league prelim rounds and the occasional group, mostly it's Europa and conference league. Loads of money, state of the art facilities throughout but player's agents keep limiting the release clause to 230k :-( I've managed on rare occasions to set my own 5-10mill release clauses but it's so frustrating losing players for 230k.
My 4-3-1-2 with 3 Playmakers winning everything with Dynamo Dresden is laughing.

The last time I played with 4-3-1-2, I played a CM as a BWM(D) and the two CMs as BBMs. They all have high workrate and the AM is this hybrid scoring/high creative TQ. One striker is a CF and the other is a Poacher. It was Serie A so it worked out. But after 5 years I changed to a 4-3-3 which has been my go to since 2012 so....🤷🏾♂️
In terms of tactics are there any differences between fm 21 touch and the full game?
Segundo Volante in a 4-2-3-1DM, alongside DM-s do wonders for me in any save!
Tried replicating Bayern Munich tactic. Used 4231 DM with segundo volante as well. Wasn't bad at all.
I had a regista , dl playmaker an advanced playmaker and carlierro in my Bayern Leverkusen save in fm 19 it was madness and fun.I only lost to bayern and won the league, and lost just 2 times .Created at least 23 chances a game.
I think it's a glitch with Lech Poznan in particular. I am playing as them as Well and I am in the same position, getting out of the champions league groups stages. Even though my wages for players are 500k p/w I still can't sign a scout for more then 700 p/w. Same with coaches and physios. The board will gladly give me 20 mil on transfers but refuses to increase the staff wages. It limits my growth a lot.
Not watched yet, but I have 2 playmakers in the CM slot and a false 9 up top. Cambridge Utd second season and in promotion slot with 3 games to go. It works, Z. It works.
I used that vertical tiki taka diamond tactic in my arsenal save but I tend to use two mezzalas and an advanced forward. Completely destroyed teams like Barcelona, Madrid in cl scoring 8 goals plus. Can't get it to work in the prem tho.

Using a segundo volante in my journeyman, it’s been great for me personally, helped me win the league and champions league at Brighton!
I have had some great success using 2 Segundo Volante and a DM in between them.
Only 3? I have a tactic which has a Sweeper Keeper, 2 BPDs, 2 IWBs, 1HB, 4 Playmakers, and a False 9.
It plays well. Short passing, one touch football. Everyone sets the tempo. Like watching a rondo.

You are correct. No one uses A Segundo Volante.
Because I use TWO Segundo Volante! One for the Right, One for the Left! WE RIDE!

I use 3 playmakers in fm21. Deep lying playmaker, roaming playmaker and advance playmaker. They work excelent in tiki taka way.
The star ratings on the players in the Morecambe save were so skewed because he is also a national team coach. That really messes up the ratings for some reason.
the gift of being in the Prem is the club reputation! go to south america and you can sign wonderkids at will!!
I know I am a year late but the last guy with Lech... this is one of the instances where if such BS glitch happens I would just use In game Editor to manually change it a bit higher and see if anything changes and if the glitch gets fixed through it.
I've gotten promoted with my Chester side and all my players are listed as championship quality, even the 4 stars. Reputation is pain
The scouting thing. You just need to sack scouts to get to the limit. Then you can ask for more. I've had the same thing happen before

Are you sure lower lines is bad? I won the French league as Stade Lavallois (3rd division team) in my fifth or sixth year playing with a much worse team than PSG, playing mostly lower lines with an original formation that uses 2 AMC and no central mids. I find a defensive line lower than standard just invites pressure. They literally just sit there and don't move out. But nice work if you got it to work
I think that works for you because your playing style probably counter attack and using "park the bus" style as defensive. When you play possesion or gegenpress style, higher lines is more reasonable.
@@blackHoodie96 Yes, I waited in my area until they made a mistake and then my team has very good passers and very good finishers to score on counter attacks. Honestly I don't know if anyone else could make this work, I feel that my team is perfectly suited for this very weird strategy, and I've scored 100 goals in 1 season with 40% possession lol
@@erpekito As a Bordeaux coach in my 3rd season with them (it's 2024 and I started in Croatia but got offered the Bordeaux job), the fact that you beat out the monster that is PSG with that style blows me away. I'm heads above the rest of the league besides PSG, which is simply unstoppable in my save. Ugh
@@morsdraconis I've won the French Cup 5 years in a row now lol, somehow I always beat them there, but in league they win most of the times, just because their players are insane, but I think that it would be crazy to use a high pressing line against such fast players tbh

everybody who is just starting a new game, asap sign Nico Williams, Camavinga, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Ibanez. They will develop into absolute class players in a 451 wide formation with direct passing and playing out of the back with 2 deep-lying playmakers, 2 inverted wingers and a deep lying forward. Also get a good lowkey playmaker like lorenzo pellegrini to blend the team

Playing small leagues in FM21 is so hard. I tried the BATE save this year, and I made it to the CL groups 4 times in the first 7 seasons. We are mega rich, and went 3 seasons invincible. I still get players, who aren't really more than CL backup quality, getting pissed because I turn down offers from Chinese teams. Their reason, "I wanna go somewhere where we can win the league."
I don't get it, and SI seriously need to revamp that part of player interactions. Most players want to leave for the stupidest reasons, and they don't even give you very good response options.
sign them on long contracts and keep resigning.. if they get mad so what - they get over it.

Omg is that seriously a glitch!?!? I went 10 years in the polish league Zaglebie Sosnowiec. I have been in the cl for the last 5 with the quater finals being my best finish and a uc final one year when i failed to get out the group. But i am unable to increase my staff wage budget. My coaches and scouts all earn below £800 a week and i am unable to increase it even with a steady 30m in the club finances and being labelled as rich. I assumed my board were jerks.

Hate to be one of those SeGuNdO vElAnTe guys but yeah, I get about 10-15 goals a season from there. When both of my SVs were injured, the team played noticably worse.
