- Fine, you caught me, I like making tier lists for FM stuff. It gives me a reference point for when I get asked about my opinion on something like a football manager personality I can say ‘oh, it goes right here and then point people to this guide. There are a lot more personalities than you would think in FM, so it’s important to have a basic understanding of what each one does. They can affect your transfer policy, which wonderkids you sign and such, as well as how you may set up your tactic for a big match. Think about how important a personality is for someone in real life, football manager is the same way.
I have come at the hidden attributes in FM a bunch of different ways but this might be the easiest way to understand. I hope it finds you well, I hope your save is going well and you’re scoring lots of goals. If you’re not, I have some videos that should be able to help turn around your FM fortunes. I should probably make more about defense though, as it seems very hard to defend in FM21 as we get deeper into the cycle. Maybe that is just Oriental Dragon having a bad defense and a really good offense, but boy do we have a really good set of attackers now. Check it out, it’s not even the tactic, it’s just pure liquid football. I know exactly how you just said that in your head.

I had a youth player who was "Loyal" when coming into the team.
He wasnt the best but a usefull rotation player. Clocking in at almost 10 years of the club until he just wasnt good enough anymore (it started before but i refused zo accomodate it). After that a legend in the second team.

I actually had a regen once with no personality at all. Personality “None”. In the scout report it listed the lack of a personality as a bad trait

I've been playing a fm20 save for 30 ingame years trying to win the championsleague with a all Romanian team (playing as Fc Viitorul). I had an incredible youth intake with a worldclass keeper (model citizen) and after 1 year Man City offered 15 mil and my board accepted... I'm beyond sad rn😭😭
I bet if you were playing as city you'd have to pay at least double that for the same GK. FM logic

Good luck with that. I'm not an amazing player, but I played a long term save in FM19 with Chindia Targoviste and until you have a bank balance big enough so that the board doesn't get a bone*r looking at an offer, they'll sell your best players (although, after 30 ingame years, I feel like you should have at least over 150M in the bank...maybe you just have crappy owners?!). I managed to get to the point where I could turn down offers of 80M if I wanted (with 300M in the bank), don't think I ever managed to sell someone for over 100M and I did managed to win the Champions League, but with just 3 or so Romanian players... I did check, and after 20 years, the Youth Rating of Romania hasn't changed which meant that only 1 or 2 Romanian players had a chance to reach the potential needed play in the CL so it was difficult to find home grown talent. I'm not saying it's impossible to achieve what you want but I do think you should use the editor and up the Youth Rating to around 120 at least if you want to win it with all Romanian players. sometime i stop playing for almost a year but i always get back to the save even after i reached to point i win every game every years i won 7 cl in rows

I do think Mercenary is low Loyalty and high ambition. He wants to win, doesn't matter which team he is doing it with as long as he gets paid.
Fickle, probably lower temperament. Can cause issues with his demands etc.

I love light-hearted. I have it on my best player in Brazil and he was just like "whatever" when I blocked his transfer to Tottenham. Still does extremely well in training and on the pitch. 😂
Always felt like Balanced wasn't that bad because it makes it easier to change with tutoring. At least when I'm playing, I feel like players with balanced can be more easily shifted to a better personality than others. That's the perception I get but I might be wrong.
The balanced personality has HUGE variability, imo it should be C tier. You can get players that have pretty decent professionalism, ambition, and determination, but you can have other balanced players that have bad professionalism. These can be wildly different.
They always catch the bad traits tho- i had one player in my team with argue with officials and hates big matches and it spread like wildfire in the dressing room with the young guys- almost sold him but he was world class and didn't want to sell to a rival
from my experience Balanced is not a bad personality at all.
Its just that they are run of the mill.
The are not under- or overambitious, not unprofessional but also not agreeing with everything, determined but not enough to move mountains.
Overall they dont succeed in or lack anything particular.

Argues with refs, hates big matches (still scored regulalry in those haha) and injury prone since he was 23 or something.
But my man was so good he played 12 straight years (19 --> 31) in the X11 (at this point he was an appropriate signing for the second Bundesliga, but he developedpast the league in no time), had by far the most apperances in this time, was almost always top assist giver (alwaysbin the team and often in the Bundesliga), scored alot and got great ratings. Was in the "club legends" section at 25/6 or something, broke club records for fun (Admittedly, the team is in the 3. Liga and never had a big break but the FIRST Bundesliga season of all time (1963)) and ... basically carried me - all while never earning above 12 million a year (which i normally refuse to pay anyway)
At 31 i sold him to City for ~105 million euro (95 plus apperance bonus) because i got this new cool 18 year old replacement from Belgium.... :D

Could you do an experiment on mentoring and how it actually affects the hidden attributes? We know professionalism, ambition and determination can be improved, but to what extent? And can other hidden attributes like pressure, versatility, lojalty, controversy etc. change in a mentoring group?

Hi buddy, as an individual who has ran a model citizen save - I can tell you that mentoring can heavily impact hidden attributes, however the frequency at which hidden attributes change is very random. If you get a ‘Moukoko training report’ message in your inbox, it almost always comes with a change in the player’s personality (hidden attributes shift), if you pre-empt this message, you can actually save scum these outcomes. Changes in personality are randomised, things can go up or go down depending on who the mentor/squad member is who is influencing the player.
@@xViperSGx I haven't seen this discussed but I believe interaction with the player can change the hidden attributes / personality as well. I have a wonderkid in my FM19 save who was "fairly determined". He asked me for a new contract and I told him his work rate on the field wasn't good enough, and if he wanted a new deal he'd need to work harder. He accepted my reasoning and his personality changed to "perfectionist". Have you ever seen/heard this happening before?
janbo I believe that it’s hard-coded for newgens only to have these instances, I have seen numerous personality changes like this. Inbox messages such as ‘something in their personal life has changed their levels of professionalism’, I’ve seen instances of it increasing and decreasing which has been interesting to note by checking with the in-game editor.
On FM16 or 17, I had arguably one of the best newgens I’d ever had, he had a professional personality up until hitting his peak early at like 20/21 and I got the dreaded message that his professionalism had decreased, I’ve also seen this happen to determination. I really do think these situations are completely random though except for when young players are given massive contracts too soon, this really seems to facilitate a drop in a player’s personality.
I had Belotti as TL for a number of years and put a few wk in mentoring with him. All of them are now Model Citizens from personalities like professional, fairly professional, determined, etc. Now I have 8 MC on my team!
I wish you talked about Mercenary personality. I have a player who's been super solid for my club over the last 10 seasons with mercenary personality, no problems, not even that demanding when it comes to wages. So I'm kind of intrigued.
Edit: He's a top premier league quality player, signed on free transfer. Only 'problem' he's had is that they refused to pick him for his national team even though he's clearly the best choice.

You should do a video about captains. The game only tells you that having high leadership & teamwork is good but is there anything else? Should I just give it to whoever has the highest of those skills and not caring where they are in the hierarchy? Does personality matter? Does any of the other attributes matter?
Great idea. I've always figured that "work rate" and "bravery" are important for a captain as well. Not so much in the dressing room, but for the matches.

It also kind of depends on what you're signing a player for. If you're in the 4th tier of English football and think you can make a push upwards, so you get a wonderkid that can develop in the first team up to the EPL, then "very loyal" is really powerful. If your club is rich and reputable, who cares about loyalty.
For young players, developmental traits are crucial, whereas if you get a 35-year-old veteran to plug that hole in your defense you don't need them to train, like, at all.

Everyone asks how to find a model citizen, no one asks how to become a model citizen themselves.
I really don't pay as much attention to personalities as I should. I think most of my Paris FC side are balanced. Thanks Z, great video as always!
Balanced isn't necessarily always a bad personality, it can vary wildly. I think it should be in C tier, D is way too harsh.
A lot of my best players have been Driven. That and of course Model Citizen are my favs.
Idea for next video: why/how do personalities change and what can be done to encourage or prevent it (depending on the type).

Determination, Ambition, Professionalism factor into a players growth in equal measure. Of these, ambition is generally the least desirable as ambitious players are either seeking to leave, or are always trying to get 50% more pay than anyone else on the squad, leading to ever inflating budgets. Love the Loyal/Very Loyal/Devoted guys. It's not just that they take less pay, though it is always nice to see someone asking for a pay reduction in the contract cycle. Motivating them is absurdly easy. Tell them to put on a show for the fans and they go absolutely bonkers. Hopefully they have decent pressure so it's a good bonkers.
I discovered personalities are really changeable for your young players/regens if you use mentoring correctly/for a long period of time. I had a 16 year old Left Back with 5 star potential but Spineless personality, so I promoted him to the first team and put him in a Mentoring group with Kristoff Ajer (Spirited, 17 Determination and Significant mentoring influence) and Kieran Tierney ( Fairly Determined, 16 Determination, Average influence). I can't be sure exactly what changed outside his determination, but he's 18 now, with 13 Determination (up from 10) and Fairly Professional personality). He used to complain in team talks when I said things like we need to win the final or we're aiming for the title, but in the most recent season he didn't do it, so I think his hidden attributes may have been affected more significantly than his determination. Would be a cool experiment to do a video on I think, especially if you can check the attributes and exactly what changes through mentoring. Great video btw

Not sure if you did it but it’s actually personality + media that give a good indication on a player hidden attribut. I think you can find amazing people that runs trials to give the range on all hidden attributes based on those 2 things

I'm a little curious how bad someones personality could be and still be considered Balanced, because I'm inclined to take someone with a balanced personality, because at least there isn't any visible problem as glaring as some of them which indicates a distinct flaw. I have always picked someone with a balanced personality ahead of someone with say "Easily Discouraged".
I once had a driven striker. Consistently got me 20+ goals. Good times 😢.

I just found one that wasn’t on this list in my save in 2025 it was “mercenary”. Predictably his loyalty is 2 and ambition is 17 everything else is middle of the road. Never seem it before so thought it would be cool to share with yall.

Say personality averages PA of 140 (still a very good player) or a decent personality and attributes averages at 160 or a very shitty personality with a PA of 190?

I have one iron willed wonderkid, he's impressive in big games but often disappears when my team is favored as he is also not much of a teamwork guy in stats. Wonder why he's the only wonderkid of my class of absurd that never left is because he seems to be dead set to play "World vs me" with the professionalism to develop fast, but flawed in ways that make him tempting but not good for other teams to buy.

Balanced is when no positive attribute spikes and the rest is avg. around 8-13 in hidden stats (and determination).
But there are negatives as well. Balanced just is that - no impressively anything.
You missed one, I went through my squad to compare the personalities to your tier list and my backup goalkeeper has the “Mercenary” personality, what does this mean and where would this fall into your tier list?
One above average, person is never a problem, is very comfortable being sold and such and knows how to work hard
What about the fickle trait? I seem to get loads of regents with this personality and it puts me off signing them because I assume it's bad but now I'm thinking it will just be low loyalty?
fickle is maximum low loyalty + high ambition and no better than high Determination.
mercenary is the same but maximum extremely low loyalty

Hey Zealand I have a issue with my youth teams in fm21. What I find is after a few seasons of releasing deadwood my u18s and u23s squads become really thinned out. And the incoming players just don't fill up enough spaces as there is only a handful of decent players for youth intake. Any tips or better still this would be a good video idea 😉

Anyone know why my Professional wonderkid won't develop on loan when they're at an elite team (Juventus) playing the majority of games for club and country and definitely has a higher potential (I cheated and looked at their PA and it was something stupid like 190). They're only 166 CA at 21 and their ability hasn't climbed in like a year
I mean 166 is already almost world-class. Anything that is above 170+ will probably happen until he reaches his prime. But not every wonderkid will reach their potential. Also, I find loans help with playing time development but not as much the training side. It can also be an adaptability issue. They might take a year or so to get used to the loan team.
It happens. Players have bad years, injuries etc.
Also, it depends on how much they grew already as a player. What was their starting CA? Maybe they were 100s or something and already grew like 60 CA which is amazing.
Most of my wonderkids that reached their high potential, started already as good players like 120+. Below that, it is hard to reach the max potential because of certain variables. And it should be hard as not everyone can be Messi or Ronaldo all the time.
Many players have very high potential but just fizzled out or faces hardships or simply became 'just good enough'. And that's fine.
@@BlueWoWTaylan I got them at my team when he was about 120 CA but loads of players have managed to eclipse them (literally spent like 150m on a bunch of wonderkids hoping they’d be good). I know it’s a high ceiling and hard to reach but there’s a bunch of other players who just managed it with worse loans, more injuries and worse personalities. I’m at the stage of the game where unless he gets to like 180 CA he won’t be good enough (his actual stats are really bad for his ability). He plays really well on loan too winning Serie A player of the year like twice on the bounce now (been at Juve 2 seasons already). If he doesn’t have a growth spurt I’ll be able to sell him for around £100m which will be nice I guess but a shame if he doesn’t get to the top. Also been really surprised by just how many of my signings have over 190 potential, got about 6 which seems way too high. Had some stinker too mind but they always sell for a decent bit.
Why so harsh on "Leader"? Wouldn't having a leader as a captain be good for your team? (Player development put aside)
Yes but it doesn't affect anything else very much. (Ambition, professionalism etc.)
@@Roscododger Exactly this. The problem with some personality types isn't that they're bad as such, it's just that they don't give you any information to work with.
What about Mercenary personality type?

What category would Mercenary come under? Recently signed a striker from Dundalk and unsure whether that will limit his development
I think it means he's all about the money. It would be harder to keep him when a bigger salary is offered by another club.

Balanced can have very low profesionalism. Determination and Ambition as well as the other hiddent attributes can be high (which is good) but we have learned that professionalism is the best so I agree with Zealand here
@@magpiecake1067 It really tells you nothing, determination can give you an idea (the higher the better) of what he is like, it's a 50/50 and everything between. If unambitious, easily discouraged and tempermental (which I avoid like the plague) are c tier, then balanced should be as well, if not higher.
@@dawnrazornephilim the lack of information on balance is what I dislike. You never know what you are getting. So it is a big gamble when signing a player with this personality. I had an italian player with balance personality. 5 star potential, never seemed to improve. I used the editior to see his potential. Mans had potential to be one of the best players around. The lack of professionalism is what let him down. Money wasted. If i however find a player with balanced but his media handling style is evasive and above. Im signing
@@magpiecake1067 All top teams have balanced players, if buying it's a gamble, if they are young and in development you can see by training if they are going to be good and if not then mentoring works well with balanced personalities. Yeah the media handling style is good as well, I also like unflappable and volatile.
Question in how to make model professionals
Aren't Pressure and Big/Important matches separate attributes?
Big/important matches is something your scout tells you that you can use to know a player has good pressure. It's not a stat in itself

Assuming you'd have to pick 1 between two talents that are statswise/potentialwise identical and going off of this video.
Would there be any B or C listed traits that would increase/decrease in importance, tier or preference when compared directly in different situations? Like being a semi-pro club in one save and a huge club in another save?

Mercenary and Fickle both are dismal to low loyalty with high determination and very high Ambition. So they will want to leave for other clubs for more money and success. It is not the best I would say.
I got a decent prospect in my youth intake that is a mercenary...and he is barely 17 when he already asks for bigger contracts and eyeing up loan moves to get out of the club. He performs decent enough but certainly won't worth the hassle of dealing with his ass. It would be a match made in heaven if he gets an agent that is just as bad that would try to move him from club to club every year for most money :D
