This video right here, this is the video that set me free from my burdens! After time wasted trying to figure out my hard shift from 1st to 2nd and also hard to put into neutral- I finally ran into the video with the information in it that was the answer to my issue! AND I WAS ABOUT TO SPLIT CASES AS WELL BRO! RIGHT ON.
Now I havent confirmed that it was the issue yet. But what I can tell you is that my shift shaft is not straight and true when I set it onto my Mitutoyo granite plate!!.. Im going to mark the position of the bracket to shift shaft, grind and remove bracket, try to straighten out the shaft by heat treatment or force, reweld bracket, and see if that works. THANK BRO

      That was it!
I can see the wear in back of the case!
200% TRUE and already ordered a new one!

a board was prob not the best to show flatness?

Definitely not. It was 4 years ago and was the best option I had at the time. Nonetheless it solved my problem, hopefully it saves at least one individual from the time and headaches I went through to discover this.

my bike is doing the same thing. Shifts cold and when it starts heating up, but once hot 3rd gear is a bitch. nice video bud.

Be sure to check your shift forks as well, I later discovered a worn shift fork that was actually the root cause of the shift shaft bending

I run an old 98 250 2 smoke and got problems in 3rd , jumps "juders" badly but dont jump out of gear !Any ideas? Thnx

Interesting! Does it behave like that in other gears or just third? I would start by inspecting the clutch. If everything is good there, move on to the shifting mechanism and lastly
You can check your gear sets/dogs for wear.

Cool, it seems like ive somehow stripped the gear but not 100% sure. never done a cog box before so abit nervous. Thnx for the info

Cool thanks , yes just the 3rd, not sure if i stripped a tooth or 2 , clutch is fine and cable brand new , so its possible the dogs are worn or bent/Worn forks ? Thanks

Right on, you might have to inspect all your shift forks and what not. Getting into the transmission isn’t too challenging and I’m sure you could do it with the right tools! I have a engine tear down video from a YZ125 if you want to check it out, the idea for the gear box is is very similar to the 250

I have a similar problem. Did a full top and bottom rebuild recently, bike shift through ALL gears when the bike is off, but when the bike is on, I do not have 3rd gear. I have 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th, but 3rd gear is a false neutral every single time when the bike is running, any ideas from anyone who has had this happen?

I later changed out all my 3rd gear components as they were worn and causing rough shifting haven’t had an issue since.
