Your dirt bike clutch symptoms may be an easy fix, but if you let it go, it can cause major problems. If your clutch is slipping, you're not only missing out on power, but it will make your dirt bike overheat much quicker.
This can lead to coolant leaking out the radiator overflow, as well as engine damage that requires a rebuild.

I’m working on my buddys 2000 warrior 350 bored 40 over hot cam and new clutch but there no clutch I’ve adjusted it out and still bucks and stalls when put into gear I’m bout to get into the clutch and look at it but I was wondering if anyone can help me out

I see you respond to a lot of your comments and was wondering if you could help me, i have a yz85 and just ordered a new clutch kit, in first gear it almost feels notchy at the powerband, and when I stall it in the trails on a hill it will move back a foot then stop(while in gear and off clutch not pulled in) then move again and stop. Feels good riding normally but since my last ride first gear almost felt like it had a neutral 55-65% throttle. It cut out on moving the bike not the throttle. If that makes sense. Have engine oil coming I haven’t changed it in a while but I’m doing that when I put the new clutch in. Should I replace the basket as well? Would that be the cause of it moving in gear and off? Thank you any help is appreciated.
Hard to know for sure over text. Sounds like it's slipping under heavy acceleration, making it feel like a false neutral, right? Might just be worn/old clutch plates. If the basket isn't notched/has grooves then I wouldn't replace it.
Quick question. Hope you or anyone can answear this? Got a crf 450r 2016. My clutch lever got tiny slack but when i hit the gas slightly, the slack on the clutch lever increase quite alot, almost all the way. Never experienced this before, tried to google it but i found nothing.

Need help before I go purchase a new clutch. My sons Crf 250r, when releasing the clutch the friction point seems far away from full open position if that makes sense. Plus the other day I started it in first and it wanted to creep for a split second even with the clutch fully engaged. Also. I had it in gear with the bike off and pulled the clutch in to roll it and the back tyre was just sliding. 😢. Do I need a new clutch plate or could this be fixed by some adjusting ??? Please help cheers
The last part sounds normal. Have you already tried adjusting the cable so that there's a proper amount of slack?
If so, I would just pop the clutch cover off and inspect the clutch. It doesn't take long.
The clutch is a maintenance item anyway, so it's pretty common to replace the plates on a race bike.

Thanks! Sounds like the clutch perch might need to be adjusted so that you can fully disengage the clutch. Otherwise your clutch plates could be warped, causing clutch drag. I cover that more in my article here: motocrosshideout.com/dirt-bike-clutch-dragging/

is it normal that while the bike is off (also so can hear it better) and it is in gear with the clutch pulled in that it makes a click sound at first when rolling the bike forward or backward? Also seems like there is still some resistance when spinning the rear wheel with it off of the ground, with the clutch pulled in while in gear?
Yep, that's normal.
There's still some resistance from the clutch because it slightly drags even with the lever pulled in.
So whenever I put my bike into 1st or any gear I have the clutch in and it stalls but it never did that before but then I give it more gas and it doesn’t stall but it’s almost like the clutch isn’t there because it just wants to move I and I don’t want the bike to move like that because I need to break and stop so how do I get that to stop happening and to where the clutch can be free and work good? Please respond I need help

Otherwise it could be old/sticky oil. Changing the oil or using a motorcycle specific oil for wet clutches can help. Or it could be warped clutch plates from getting too hot.
Hello, I have a KX 85, it starts and runs, however when I put it in gear and release the clutch it stalls. Already replaced the clutch plates but still stays the same, also tried adjusting the clutch but doesn't work either. When I try it on the bike stand it does work.
So it stalls when you're trying to start moving in first gear? It was doing the same thing before replacing the clutch plates?

There's either something wrong with the clutch or perhaps the transmission shift fork got bent. Did the bike fall over on the left side before this started happening?

Sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaging. I think that has a hydraulic clutch, right? Have you tried bleeding the clutch? If the lever is working properly, then I would properly take the clutch cover off to inspect the plates and basket for wear or damage.
I just finished rebuilding my 2010 crf250r and I was test riding it the other couple days and my clutch was slipping out of neutral and when I put it into neutral after an hour long ride it made an awful calling noise or like a grind, does this mean I have to replace my clutch and gear or is this a replace the fibres issue?
Hard to know without more info. Best bet is to probably just pop the clutch cover off and inspect.
Hey I have a 2013 Honda crf 250r. When I’m riding, I get high rpms really fast and my top speed is very slow. A 150 can keep up with me. Any ideas or advice as to why?

If that doesn't fix it, then it might just need new clutch plates if they're slipping (sounds/feels like you're hitting neutral when accelerating in gear).
Hi, my problem is stiff and not so easy pulling the clutch, i just change the fluid 5.1 and take off all air bubbles but still its stiff littlebit i wont to be softer (ktm exc-f 450 19) thank you
That bike is naturally going to have a stiffer pull because the clutch springs are stiffer so that it doesn't slip. I recommend checking out the Midwest Mountain Engineering lever to make it easier to pull: midwestme.com/
when bike is on stand is it normal for the wheel to spin kinda fast? its a 23 fc250 hydraulic clutch, has 30 hours on it and my 21 yz125 has over 125 hours or more and the clutch is all oringinal and gets abused yet is in perfect condition. was wondering because i think its kind of odd

Hey James, sounds like the clutch plates might be sticking. This is somewhat common on KTM's because they have tighter tolerances on clutch plates. You could try changing the oil more often or use a motorcycle-specific oil that's made for "wet clutches" and is more slippery of an oil.
Hi my young lad was at the track the day he hit a jump in 2nd it sounded like the bike went into nutril parked it up the gear lever wuden move finly got it going again wude go into first but not 2nd any idears what coud be the problem thanks

I am working on my girlfriend's '01 YZ125. Clutch doesn't engage until lever is almost all the way out, and if you try to start the bike in gear with clutch pulled, the bike will lurch forward as the crank spins over with the kick-start. I also feel the bike is lacking power, but I've dialed in jetting and oil ratio. The bike sounds really good and crisp. It just feels like something is holding it back as the bike is slower than my 125 but has more done to it haha. Thanks for reading.
That's awesome you're helping out your girlfriend! Have you tried adjusting the clutch cable? It sounds like the clutch plates might just be worn out, which is pretty common on a 125 motocross bike. They're fairly cheap and easy to replace.

I encountered a problem today on my 2010 yz450f almost felt like if my chain was skipping teeth on my sprocket but that was not the case any idea what I’m experiencing?
You checked both sprockets? Did you check the chain tension? Are the adjuster blocks even (so the wheel and chain are straight)?
My 1990 yz125 only kicks over in neutral and it stalls out if I’m in 1st or 2nd with the clutch pulled all the way in.
Any idea of what may cause that?

I have a yamaha dt 50cc and it runs normally but when i pull the clutch in and put it on first gear it just stalls and is basically the same if i just didn’t pull the clutch in at all. Are my plates just worn off or something else?

I bought an exc 450 2018 and when its in 1st gear it sometimes just keeps driving even tho i have the clutch pulled in all the way…how can i fix this?
KTM's often do that. It could also be old/sticky oil. Try fresh oil or a different oil that's made for wet clutches. It could also be worn/warped clutch plates from getting too hot too many times.

So the engine dies when you pull in the clutch? If there's a safety switch on the clutch lever going down to the engine, I'd check that connection first.
While I'm riding the clutch works great then all of a sudden becomes very loose and doesn't even work till I turn off the bike and then it works again the fluid is completely full but still makes a squeaky noise what could it be
Have you tried bleeding it? Might need to rebuild the master cylinder. It's fairly cheap to get a rebuild kit.
my bike on 4th and 5th gear is slower than it used to be, the power on the other gears its the same as it was but it just goes 15 km slower than it used to. Help
What bike? Have you checked the engine compression?

With the engine on or off? There's always going to be at least 'some' clutch drag if it's in gear, even with the clutch pulled in. I hope that's what you're asking about.

I have a crf250x and i was riding the other day and all of a sudden i have 6 neutrals after a bit it fixes itself and back to normal and it does that a couple more times. The clutch also drags alot when pulled in starting to move the bike. Are these worn out clutch in need of replacing symptoms?
I would pop the clutch cover off and inspect. There's definitely something wrong. Hopefully it's a minor clutch problem and not a major transmission issue.
On a side note, did the bike recently fall over on its left side?

When I rev my bike to do a hole shot and dump the clutch I hear this metal shinking noise idk how to explain it but it shifts fine and it doesn’t slip. My front sprocket it a little worn down but what do you think it is?
Hard to say over text. What does "a little worn" look like? Is the chain properly tensioned? Have you pulled the clutch cover off to see if everything is still tight/intact?
@@MotocrossHideout the front sprocket was definitely flipped around to get some more life out of it from the previous owner so it looks shaved off on both sides and the chain was properly tensioned before that noise happened but I have not pulled the cover off yet

Sounds like the clutch is grabbing/dragging. If the cable is properly adjusted, it might be old/sticky oil or worn/warped clutch plates.

i ride a 2022 klx 300r and every time i hold in the clutch it like stalls neutral but it still does the same in any ideas on the problem
So it stalls every time you pull in the clutch? If there's a clutch safety switch on the clutch perch, make sure it's properly connected.

Hey Michael, it's hard to know for sure unless you take it apart and inspect for wear/damage/loose parts in the clutch. My WR450F is noticeably louder in neutral and quiets down when I pull in the clutch. If it recently started doing that, I'd look into it before it causes a major failure.

My bike wont roll in nuetral, even when i pull in the clutch. I was going 60+ when the engine immediately stoped and the back wheel locked, took forever to get it started again and it did it again when i shifted into 2nd. It wouldnt shift at all for a min, but after sitting for a lil i got it into 1st, any ideas?
Hate to say it, but it sounds like the engine might have temporarily seized and then cooled down and unlocked enough to move and start again. Hard to know for sure, but that's what it sounds like to me.

If so, does it get better when the engine is fully warmed up?
It could just be dirty oil that's causing the clutch plates to stick together, especially when the engine is cold.
Hi. I just installed a new clutch basket, Rekluse Core Manual clutch, and new slave cylinder in my 2013 KTM 450 EXC. When I start riding the bike it runs like a top. shifting is smooth and flawless. But after an hour or so when the engine is hot the clutch slips on acceleration in lower gears. If I stop long enough to let the engine cool down quite a bit, the clutch works just fine again. I've tried adjusting the free play of the lever many times and it doesn't seem to solve the problem. Any ideas what might be the problem? thanks.
Sorry to hear about your clutch issue. What oil are you using for the transmission? Have you tried contacting Rekluse about this?
@@MotocrossHideout its a 4 stroke so I'm running 100% synthetic oil 20w 50 I think. Rekluse has been non-responsive to 3 emails and I got a recorded message when I called but I'll keep trying to reach them. I know the issue is not too uncommon so Rekluse should be able to help once I get through. Thanks again..
@wudangmountain3802 is it a motorcycle specific oil made for wet clutch? Or does it have a JASO certification? I think Rekluse recommends Rotella oil.

Hey James, it's hard to know for sure. It could be the clutch plates sticking - perhaps old or the wrong type of oil.

If your idle is too high in neutral, then the clutch doesn't have anything to do with it. If you were accelerating in 5th gear, it could've slipped, making it feel like neutral. Hard to know over text.
Most likely carb related if you have one. what kind of bike? Air leaks can also cause a high idle. If you have a throttle body like on the ktm's with the yellow knob at the bottom then try backing that knob out (counterclockwise) as far as you can til it stops.
Problem im having with 2012 crf250r is when i shift in to gear i no longer need to hold my clutch the bike just runs and drives with out me pulling clutch any reason it would do that but other than that weird thing no issues rides fine
So are you saying that pulling in the clutch lever doesn't do anything - it doesn't disengage the clutch? If that's the case, then the clutch cable either needs major adjustment, or something isn't right internally.
My bike just started making a loud sound when I kick start it. When I let the clutch out. It begins to whine. Whenever my clutch is engaged. The noise stops.
If it wasn't making it before, I would look into it. It could be something loose/worn in the clutch or could be a bearing going out in the engine. Hard to say over text. Let us know what you find.
I have a 2002 crf450r and if i put it in gear when the bike is off and pull the clutch in it does move still as if the clutch is not pulled in when bike is running i have no issues any idea ?
Maybe I'm just a little groggy on Monday (lol), but I'm having a hard time understanding your comment... So are you saying that pulling the clutch in with the engine running doesn't do anything?
Clutch only works with engine running while off if I pull clutch in while in gear it's as if clutch is not pulled in
It's common for there to be a little bit of clutch drag if it's in gear with the engine off and the clutch pulled in.
If the clutch works well when the engine is running then I don't think I'd worry about it.

just picked up a bike yesterday (Xpro storm 150 2022) and got it running changed oil and sparkplug , but when i have the clutch in and try to go into first gear and release then go for the throttle the bike just instantly dies smh

I have a question, I hear a weird spinning sound, almost rattle when I put my head to the bottom of the left side of my bike. Is this clutch or trans related? No symptoms other than that.

@@MotocrossHideout , yes rebuilt with new parts new gaskets etc , I finally got the clutch bled and I have just a bit of free play on lever if I am looking at the clutch plates they move a little
The lever has a good firm feel I can feel the difference when the air gets out since I’ve bled it several times so I’m just wondering what I should test into next I took the push rod out seems fine so I’m stumped
The lever is firm but not hard to pull
I’m assuming it is bled there are no bubbles coming out the bleeder. However if I look into the master and pump the clutch there are tiny tiny bubbles coming up I don’t know if that is a leak or what also on the slave I tried the thin gasket and the medium gasket seemed the same

If there's still bubbles coming up then it's probably not done bleeding the air out. Those lines can be a pain in the butt to bleed.

If that doesn't fix the loose slack, then it's probably time for a new cable.
What can it mean if your bike is making a horrible grinding noise when your riding it slowly ?
Make sure the wheels are straight and the chain is properly adjusted on both sides first. If the clutch is properly adjusted at the cable, I would probably take the cover off and see if anything is loose/missing.
I just replaced the clutch on my bike and now it's making knocking sounds, the sound happens wether or not the clutch is engaged and seems to lessen when the bike is revved a little. I've checked the timing and the valves and the clutch basket. The basket doesn't have a lot of play though I did notice some play. The only thing I really noticed is that one of the oil pump gears had a little bit of play. The bike seems to get hot really fast and I even saw a little bit of smoke after the bike was on for a few seconds. Could it be an oil pump problem somehow?
Hard to say over text. If it were me and there were no weird sounds before replacing the clutch, I would take the clutch apart and make sure everything is properly installed in the right order with no missing parts and that it's all torqued to OEM specs.
@@MotocrossHideout that's what I did but I guess I'll go through it again, I might end up splitting the cases at this point and just making sure everything is good, I hope I don't have to do that though
It's hard for me to help diagnose without seeing and hearing it, so I'm just going off of what it sounds like you're saying.
When you say that the sound started only after replacing the clutch, that makes me think that something from the clutch is causing it, but I could be wrong.

i have a problem where the clutch is dragging and doesnt want to change gears. the bike also idles lower than usual in any gear (including neutral), the revs drop down way faster than they should when clutch is pulled in (again in any gear), and the bike trys to move/drive itself forward when the clutch is pulled (again in any gear). I have got new friction plates coming in the post and hoping that will fix the issue. the engine oil was replaced 4 days ago and i put a little too much in, i hope this aint the reason why the clutch has gone but will have to see. if anyone has had this issue and fixed it, please let me know

I got a 98 yz125. When my bike is off and in gear I grab the clutch to see if I can move it while in gear. It just wont move. Its a new clutch and cable which adjusted so many ways

my problem is the bike slips out of neutral into 1st ALL the time, if the bike sits there and i go to try and move it, its in gear without even touching the shifter. even just pushing the bike without it on it will slip into neutral, i can barely get the bike to start without it slipping into 1st and then when it does even while holding the clutch in the bike starts to go like im barely coming the clutch in. i can also can BARELY find neutral to the point i have to use my hand to find it, its a kx85. not sure what the problem is, has fresh gear oil too.
Interesting. Sounds like the shift fork could possibly be bent inside the transmission. Have you tried searching Thumpertalk forum for this specific issue?
@@MotocrossHideout yeah one of the forums said the issue was the detent spring. i haven't taken it apart yet to look sense i'm waiting for the parts to come in so hopefully that's the case and i won't have to split the cases
When I put my bike into 1st gear sometimes it will just stall out but not every time but as long as I keep a little throttle on it it won’t. And when I pull the clutch in to roll down a hill it most of the time sounds like the clutch isn’t fully engaged. Also I will come to a stop with clutch pulled in on flat ground and it will inch forward anyway but it doesn’t happen all the time. Is my clutch worn or do i need to mess with the cable
I'd definitely start by adjusting the cable since that's easy to do. Loosen the locknut and turn the small knob out until there's just a tiny by of play/wiggle in the lever before it gets tight, then tighten the locknut again. Let me know how it goes!

Hi, I have a little problem with my crf230f when I upshift at low rpms it works perfect but if I try to upshift at high rpms it wont shift, I can downshift at any rpms, low or high. I have the right amount of clutch freeplay at the lever and the shift pedal doesn't hit the case.
Are you shifting with or without using the clutch?
@@MotocrossHideout with the clutch, I took it for a test ride with normal footwear to feel the shifting better, the shifting problem is really random some times I can shift through all the gears without a problem, I bought it used a little over a week ago, I ended up ordering the gearshift star and the gearshift plate. I hope thats the issue.

Otherwise, the clutch plates might be getting warped, which is common after a lot of hours.
Clutch cable is good 1 finger pull but clutch plates were sticking soo orderd a new 1
Just rebuilt a cr80r I cleaned the carb set it back to normal for the most part, also put a new top end on and now it starts first kick, but when I put it in gear it doesn’t go????

@@CalumMac-ox4ek clutch plates where fried like I suspected, So bought sum new clutch plates and bolts (whole kit basically) and was fine after that clicked into gear

Hello yeah so when i start my bike when its cold i put it in gear with clutch in it stalls however if i warm it up and if i start it up when its warmed up i can put it in 1 geat just fine another thing even if its warm and i stall it on any gear and when i start it up with the clutch pulled in it just starts going even if the clutch is pulled in
Sounds like the clutch is sticking and grabbing when it cools down. Using a different oil that's more slippery could help, or just changing it more often.

That's definitely possible. I had a similar problem with my GasGas trials bike. Using a super slippery and lightweight oil with fresh clutch plates made the most difference. Even after a few hours they would start sticking again. It was a hydraulic clutch, so that could also be a part of it if it's not functioning 100%.

Sounds like the clutch is still grabbing. I'd first try adjusting the clutch cable at the lever perch so that there's very little slack.
I have a problem that's different to all of these. My bike starts and runs fine but when I pull the clutch in, put it into gear, release the clutch I hear this clicking sound and no drive.
The bike sounds healthy when in neutral.

Bike is a yamaha yfm 350cc. After alot of head scratching it was the forward and reverse selector not engaging properly.

Yeah its going, I need to spend a weekend on it tho and take apart the selector because it's real stiff, just give it a clean and some new grease and see if that fixes how hard it is to select forward and reverse.

yes same goes to my CRF250L
Mine did that and I had to hold it with the brake… a new clutch basket solved the issue for me.. mine was notched/grooved but even though the clutch discs seemed to slide fine on the basket fingers when I slid the plates by hand.. the problem never stopped till I got the new clutch basket

@@MotocrossHideout its 2005 crf230f and its been doing it since i got it i have seen a few videos of other 230 that have the same issue but mine seems to be a bit louder.
If it's coming from the clutch and it isn't getting louder then it's probably not a major issue, but if you want it to be reliable, I would remove and inspect all the clutch parts. This guy sounds like the same problem and it turned out to be the clutch basket:

I just bought a ssr 125 foot shifter goes through all 4 gears but it’s not engaging into gear . It will free wheel no matter what gear it should be in .

Yes. But when you let it out completely it should stall. This is because you're putting it into gear. But yes it's normal on every bike to have that. It's the "catching point", we call it.

Ended up taking it apart. Found out my springs are done. So the rattling was coming from some of the bolts (with the springs) that went loose and was hitting my case and making grooves. I caught it before it was too late though. Washed out my bikes oil to be safe from shavings.

I have a 98 rm 125 that I just did a full rebuild on, but I did not replace the clutch as the plates looked fine. Randomly out of nowhere after riding a couple of times the bike wanted to go full speed in gear with the clutch pulled in. This happened one time after just starting up and it has not gone away.
Is the throttle cable binding/twisting? Could also be an air leak from loose carb clamps.
This so called clutch creep that he mentioned as the first problem is what bothers me right now and I don't know how to fix that and another thing is I can't transport my bike to a workshop so I'm kind of stuck
Hey Zvonimir, did you already try the things I mentioned in this vid? I highly recommend buying an OEM service manual for your bike if you plan on working on it yourself - they're super helpful with step-by-step tutorials and specs for tuning and maintaining your bike.
My clutch grips more the hotter it gets not less I can’t find anything on it? I put a new clutch in it but it was like 50 bucks if I remember right
Did you replace the metal discs as well as the fibers? Clutch plates expand as they get hotter, which can make them feel more "grabby", especially on a KTM since they tend to have less of a gap between the plates. Make sure you're using oil that's made for a "wet clutch" as well.
@@MotocrossHideout it came with the metal discs but if i remember right i think it had more fibers and metal discs than the oem i took off it also had heavier springs i think
Did you measure them and check the flatness? Heavier springs are going to put more pressure on the plates so they won't slip as easily and can take more abuse.
I put a new 125cc engine in a dirt bike and it ran great for a couple of days and now it feels like it is slipping when I give it more than half throttle.

@@MotocrossHideout honestly, it's kinda odd how it acts. At first, it seems like the clutch isn't fully engaging. It's hard to find neutral while it it running. It also acts like it wants to jump forward just slightly when you put it in gear, which seems opposite of how it's doing on the top end.🤷🏻♂️
It takes off good, with good throttle response, but once you give it some juice, the rmp's jump and it barely pulls.
@@Curtis86 Hmm, yeah it sounds like it's dragging at idle (which is fairly common and could be an easy fix), but also slipping at high RPM under heavy load.
I 2nd checking the plates. Make sure they metal discs are flat and not discolored, and that the fiber plates are within thickness spec.
Also, check that there are proper numbers for each plate and in the correct order.

@@MotocrossHideout not having so many issues with it this season been giving the bike a lot of time to warm up and after changin last years oil she’s running like a dream I like to just kick it into first while it’s on the stand so the rear wheel has no resistance and the clutch frees up easy then it’s all warmed up for when I wanna be on my way.

Some bikes have a smaller "friction zone" than others, but that's also a sign that the clutch plates are due for replacement soon.
