Listen You can lower the voltage and make it a lot safer too. On the hot side lead wire it thru a 40-60 watt light bulb like solder one side of the hot to the center of bulb and the other to the side of the bulb creating a resistor lowering the voltage and amps. every time a bug zapps the bulb will light though... You dont need this much power to zap a bug but you sure need more than the over the counter ones.

Haven't burnt anything in the house, when high voltage AC is handled correctly there's usually nothing to worry about or fear. But interestingly the buys the get killed during the night get zapped so hard it semi cooks them and during the day the yellow jackets can smell the cooked buys and try to fly into the cages to get them and in turn they get zapped! Love that!
That transformer can put a series hurting on you thanks for sharing though I’m about to build one over a high intake fan I hate mosquitoes but if I get zapped a few times while I’m billing it so be it

I assume i can just hook a transformer to a power source then use two metal wiring meshes with proper spacers/insulators... but sheesh this should be introduction to electricity stuff but wow is hard to find.

if you can get a good separation of the 2 high voltage wires to where they cant arch to each other or something connected to ground and control the voltage input with a variac transformer then it can be much more safe to use. Like I said in the beginning of this video "This will be a crude example" and thats why this looks very unsafe to use but build and put together correctly can be very effective and fun to watch late....

Why don't you take it apart, & start from scratch, & show step by step how to build it ,& give in detail, what you used ,& how to connect both cages together just like the store bought ones, the outer cage if I'm not mistaking doesn't shock someone, it's just the inside cage, so how would you connect the cages , & what would you use to do this so there's no electrical connection, & how to mount the transformer on top, with a cover to protect it from the elements, so's not to short circuit it

just the transformer plugged into an 120 outlet power strip. The cage mesh is birdcage mesh and 2 wires for the high voltage output connecting one to each cage but keeping them apart too. The tricky part is connecting the inner cage and not having the outer cage spark to the wire going to the inner cage. Parts are outer mesh I think is 2x2 feet the inner is around 2x1.5 foot about, the Webster ignition transformer, and 2 spare wires to connect the transformer to the cages and plug the transformer in to 120 outlet. Thats it very basic

i cannot say I'm only familiar with the one i have and yes it still works. In fact i took its primary coils input voltage up to 240 volts plus using my auto transformer connected to a 120 to 240 step up transformer in turn was connected to my Webster Ignition transformer and didn't damage any of the wire. It wasnt at that voltage level for very long just a few seconds. My advice is to get one that has large/protected output electrodes for the high voltage 2nd coil. mine has that as shown in my video. I did show what transformer i have in the video.

You can use a G10 fiberglass board to mount your chicken wire to. You can also use phenolic board

I've been hit by a transformer like that. 10KV stings. Those come out of oil-fired furnaces.

yes chicken wire would work with wooden frames as long as the wire mesh isn't making contact to the ground and they are properly spaced apart...
