I got one with a black sock and a piece of window screen. Supposedly the mosquito will land on the side of the wet sock, lay eggs, the larvae will go into the water and once they hatch they are stuck under the window screen that sits slightly above the water line. SO FAR nothing but its only 3 days old. Another option is to leave some standing water with some mosquito dunk in it as a gravid trap. Dont even waste time with the yeast and brown sugar, just get several beets from the grocery store and blend them up in the blender and add the beet to the water in the black bucket along with some dawn, the beets contain a compound called Geosmin that is used by researchers to trap mosquitos, its found naturally in the soil and comes up in an aeroso form when it rains and that attracts the mosquitos, the mosquito larvae die in the bucket because the dawn prevents them from leaving when they mature. I use beet peels in my bug zapper and that attracts hundreds of thousands of mosquitos and stops the cycle after they die and the larvae die in the bucket. I'm going on two years now since I first used the beets and the mosquito population is still down to virtually nothing and last season had some record rain.

I have a tip for gnats that swarm your face.
Put on a hat and put something tall in it. The annoying pests actually go to the top of the target (you are the target), and thus will stay clear of your face.
I know it sounds stupid, but I tested it in my pasture. It worked. I was stunned.
For black flies (biting fly that is bigger than a gnat, and smaller than a housefly) spread a product called “Save the Baby” wherever your clothing ends…collars, wrist, sleeves…as well as around your hairline. They like those protected margins. The product is similar to Vicks vapor rub, but works better. I don’t know why. I tested this in upstate NY and Virginia. It works.

And btw, if you get bitten, we have found that a dense paste of baking soda (w/ water) tends to soothe the itch for good- I usually put a tiny blob of paste right over the center of the bite, then place a band-aid over it to keep the paste on, usually for at least a few hours. It seems the most popular itch/bite products have the active ingredient of sodium bicarbonate, so this is how we came to try this remedy out :).

One good way to stop that is to grow lavender, ( kills fleas too), lemon grass, lemon garlic, peppermint, sweet mint and spearmint. Either grow it in pots,(as it can become invasive), or place in planters around the patio area and it will stop the buzzing because the flying pests don't like the fragrant plants. Coconut oil in food grade liquid form applied to pools of standing water with active larvae present will drown the larvae before they emerge as adult biting mosquitos.

For my mosquito trap I have a barrel full of water with a screen on top that dips down into the water. The mosquitos lay their eggs in it and they drop through the screen. Then when they grow they can't get back out through the screen. When they successfully lay eggs in water it puts out chemicals that draw more mosquitos to lay eggs there. You really have to get rid of other water pools sitting around so they are more likely to lay eggs in the trap water. Soap in the water isn't good for birds and other wildlife if they drink it.

I have discovered that using pesticides, Tekko pro with Bifen IT, in my yard, along with my surrounding neighbors’ yards have made a significant amount of difference than anything. I incorporated these pesticides in Paul Harvey’s mosquito recipe and went to town! Keep in mind that you don’t need a lot of mouthwash in that recipe; you just need a small fraction; it only acts as a stabilizer; the thing that kills the mosquitoes is the epson salt, and what attracts them is the beer; add small amount of dish soap, and the females drown in standing water. Mosquitoes survive on the dew on lawns and vegetation in the morning. Dynatrap traps with octenol lures is my backup is economical, but not the best. Carbon dioxide traps are very expensive, but most effective. But thanks for your video. I’ve learned a lot and found my ultimate solution.

So great to hear the new idea how to catch Mosquitoes and larvae,
I immediately went out and put some black bucket outside. I really want to see it for myself. It was amazing in your video. and I am going to do The rest of your suggestion with the East and sugar (that’s exactly what you do when you break a blade)
How often do you need to change the east solution?
So much thanks for your information

You can also build a fly trap. Make a cylinder or cube shaped trap with screening on all sides with an opening at the bottom of the trap. Form an inverted cone attached to the bottom of the trap. The small inverted cone opening is in the middle of the space inside the trap. Put fly bait in the bottom of the trap, which is slightly raised from the ground. The flies are attracted to the bait. When the flies are ready to fly away, their natural tendency is to fly upward. It’s very unnatural for flies to go downward to leave the bait. Then the flies buzz around the inverted cone and walk up the inverted cone, and then the flies trap themselves. It’s very difficult for the flies to find the small opening in the inverted cone, and if they find the opening, they usually re-trap themselves because it’s very unnatural for flies to try to fly or walk downward to escape the trap. Over time, you’ll catch hundreds of thousands of flies. You can put the fly trap in a large container of water for several hours to shorten the time for them to die. But when there are hundreds of trapped flies that are buzzing around in the fly trap, that will attract more flies which will also be caught. The flies do all the work to catch themselves. The bait needs to be changed every couple of days. After several days, you’ll notice a significant decrease in the number of flies you see flying around your yard.

This is a great passive trap that only needs regular changes of liquid as the yeast will die off and not release carbon dioxide to attract mosquitos. I have seen another way to trap mosquitos. Put a large, powerful ventilator outside and cover the inside of the front half of the wire guard of the ventilator with screendoor mesh. run the ventilator and to speed up the killing of the mosquitos that are caught against the mesh, spray the mesh with a water, ethanol, soap mix. I have seen videos where they catch thousands of mosquitos in a few hours with that method.

Great ideas, but would it not make sense to combine both methods into one that both kills the mosquitoes and their lava? Also, if adding spinosad to the water, then it might be a good idea to place it out of reach of children and pets.

If a mosquito does fall for the trap, they drown before they even lay their eggs. Spinosad in that water would not make a difference.
If some mosquitos notice the lack of surface tension on the first trap and fly away before they drown, he was saying hopefully they'd find the spinosad/water solution so at least their larvae could not survive.

You can also add a little vegetable oil into bird baths ect to kill off the larvae
