My dad (an engineer at Deere) was having problem with the stones on the hone breaking as it was a small engine with ports in the bore. I recommended (with my auto mechanic training) using the bead hone. It worked great.
I really appreciate your videos. I'm a retired maintenance electrician and also grew up around John Deere equipment. My dad was a operating engineer all his life and at one point worked for a home builder. Dad taught me on a JD 450 hi-lift and a JD 500 loader/backhoe. I used to go to work with him in the summer. He had me quite proficient at operating before I was old enough to drive. Those abilities proved usefull later in my working life, working on construction. Watching your channel and a couple of others, gave me the confidence to tear down a 16 hp Ariens tractor (small compared to what you do) and fix a lot of things that it needed so it wouldn't leave oil spots everywhere it went. Trust me when I say, I'm a lot better electrician than mechanic. I like the logical approach to teardown and keeping removed parts in order. I've learned a lot from watching, so thanks! I look forward to your videos and am a loyal follower.
So when you were hammering that block of wood on top of the piston, and you said people were probably cringing. It reminded me of when I was a teenager and broke the 4x4 in my truck. A friend of mine and I were sitting in the barn just staring at it when my dad walks in and asked what was up. I told him that we had tore the front end out of my truck the night before and really didn't know how to fix it. I will never forget him chuckling, and saying "It's broke, you can't tare it up any worse." Then walked out. The wrenches started flying and I haven't seen anything I couldn't fix yet. As long as I was willing to get off my butt and try. Except for maybe a computer.
I did a lot of engine rebuilds on tractors,Skidders etc etc.Some in frames which I preferred to all the extra work of pulling an engine.You guys doing that rebuild brings back memories.You have a shop set up for this.Keep up the great work and videos.
Looking at that removal of the hard nose. Back in the late 60 the company I was working for had Several John Deeere 450 dozers, if you broke a fan Belt you had to remove the hard nose to replace it. So are Meckanic decisions was he cut a openings in the side of the hard nose, it actually worked really well, he then put a hinge system on it if he has to replace another fan belt some day in the future. Shortly after that John Deeere put door to make it easier to remove fan belts.
4/16/22; Clint hard work pulling engine on JD 455 w/3300hrs. Water from open exhaust while sitting for...4-5 yrs= 2 cylinders holding water, pistons rusted-2-liner, lifters top spotted/rough but cam shaft ok. Lots of parts expense & labor& shop costs too. After engine & clutch rebuild gotta check undercarriage...this turned out to be a major rebuild for all YT viewers. Hope you get a sale that covers all your time & efforts. Keep us posted. Guys strap that lock down to the tube as well, have seen those jump out once when the rig got hit by another, luckily no on was working near on it at the time.
This is an example of a person knowing what he is doing!!! The decision that has to be made when removing the head is how much you want to spend to repair the engine problem. I cannot understand why a owner wouldn't protect the machine from the weather. The dealers don't give those machines away for nothing. Good video look forward to seeing the follow up....
Have this same dozer except with a 6way blade and I couldn’t ask for more I paid 10k for it 12 years ago and other than normal maintenance track pads and rollers and keeping the track tensioned with grease is always fun. But I check it all before each use. it’s done everything I’ve ever asked from it. I enjoyed watching this video by far my favorite.
Surprised that you are bothering with this machine - it's almost a museum piece! Very similar to the Drotts I helped out on back in the 1960's - without a shop I might add, camping out in the woods where the breakdowns occurred, a few tarps strung between the trees to keep the worst of our English summer out of our necks. Once did a full lower end rebuild in situ. Good experience working with an old guy almost as good as you!

Years ago I watched a programme reinstating a laid up River Thames WW2 fire boat which had a huge diesel powered fire pump which was siezed solid which brute power wouldn't shift. The old timer helping out boiled a couple of gallons of old engine oil and poured them into the cylinders. The next day the engine turned over and was stripped and repaired with minimal fuss.

It never ceases to amaze me in the number of people who can't properly store their equipment when it needs to be out in the weather. How hard is it to cover over the damn exhaust pipe?
I see lots of folks do "will it run" videos on old tractors and such, and I always thought about the end result. Old engines were tough, and would "run" through almost anything, but what use is it to get it running, (just turning over) if it's not able to move much more than itself. I think that speaks well of you, and of your business, that even on these "not really a profit-maker" machines you take the time to do what needs to be done. Will enjoy the rest of this series.

I like the sentiment, sure it would be easier to scrap it, but you see the worth of well built equipment and can't sit by and watch it tossed out when a little tlc will get it back to its former glory. We live in an age where we routinely toss everything and design and sometimes only offer support for a limited life time.

What we have done frozen Engine on Equipment, we used a fire hydrant tank Cylinder with freezing material to shrink piston . It worked really well for use. They broke lose frankly easy.
Makes me sick to see the neglect, a little care (shedding of water off the machine) and this thing runs a long time. I do tend to like the voice over (although in this case, your throat would probably say different, and i/we missed Kevin’s giggling, and I suspect it is more time consuming for editing). We used frezz the pistons to unstuck the rings to move the pistons, used hand Spray canisters, like c2
