My name is Oliver, 86 years old. I have an interesting story about the Texas Chocolate Sheet cake.Years ago, I believe it was in the 60's, My Mother and Father-in law lived in the Dominican Republic. A Dominican lady made them a chocolate cake. It was delicious. My mother-in-law asked for the recipe. The lady refused, said it was a secret family recipe handed down. She finally relented and gave it to my mother-in-law. My mother-in-law gave it to my wife. My wife gave it to whomever wanted it. No longer a secret. In the 1980 I was working in Texas. My wife gave the "Secret Recipe to a very nice German lady there. Figured that's how it got introduced to Texas. To make a long story short. The Secret recipe is the same as the one you posted. It is by far my favorite chocolate cake. Love your show. I watch every episode.
What a great story, Oliver! You could be correct about the origin of the recipe.
We sure do appreciate you being a loyal subscriber of our channel. I am honored that you watch our videos. You have made my day!
As do we! Never miss a video!
Can't wait to try this!! Thank you! Always enjoy your videos!!
I love your recipes of all the cooks that I watched you are the best and I love how you Give me a recipe step-by-step so we could understand and I just want to say I bet you were the best teacher there was❤❤❤
My Mom always gave recipes when asked. She thought it was a compliment. Her best friend was VERY reluctant to. That friend had a Polish Mama who had great recipes my Mom wanted to recreate. After she got a couple where the ingredients or directions were changed, she gave up.
Yes my girlfriend from n central farm country made a packed lunch while we were driving into a Billy Graham crusade in Chicago 1971. I was pregnant with morning sickness. She made this. I never had a problem. Now I'm going to make this for my birthday this weekend no. 78!!!!!
Oh my goodness. I literally just texted my cousin to see if she had my Aunts recipe for Texas sheet cake. She’s been gone for 4 years and I miss her and the cake. Thank you for always sharing the most wonderful recipes. I’m the matriarch of our family now and I cook for my son and his family every Wednesday. (My daughter and identical granddaughters are amazing cooks) I love the two of you, you are so beautiful inside and out. I am going to make this also for bible study too! Have a blessed and amazing day. I cannot wait until your next video.
Your kind words about your friend made me tear up. You guys are so kind.
Have you tried this cake with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
@@nancyhavard8345I will add that when I make it soon.
I have been making this cake since the late 1960's. I received it shortly after my marriage. A real crowd pleaser. I also made a pineapple sheet cake.
Pineapple!!! That has too be amazing!!!!! 😻😻😻😻😻😻
I chuckle every time Melissa’s hand discretely secures the stand mixer❣❣❣
I'm always a little concerned it might dance its way off the countertop! And he has a lot of other things he is trying to remember as he is making these videos so I try to help him out when I can. 😊 Thanks so much for watching our channel. It's great having you at the table with us.
Thank you for giving credit where credit is due to Ladybird. Being a Texas gal myself, this is one of the first cakes my mother taught me to make, I was 8, I am 65 now. The only difference is that we always add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the cake mix. It makes a big difference. Everyone always asks, "What's the difference in your chocolate cake?" It is such a subtle taste that they can not distinguish what it is. Hope you try it.
We always add cinnamon to our cake, too. It really does enhance the flavor!
I agree!,....definitely add the teaspoon of cinnamon
I'm from Texas and we love our favorite cake! We add cinnamon also.
To me it’s just a chocolate cake without the cinnamon!
The best cake ever.
1964. The cake was originally called Gertrude Armstrong’s Chocolate Cake. Ms. Armstrong was a Texas native I believe. I’ve had the recipe since 1964, yes, that long ago. I cut it out of a newspaper, and Lady Bird was not part of the nomenclature at the time, LBJ had just been made President and she was not that well known at the time let alone have any influence. Her influence for the cake came along later after it had been published and already was a favorite. I made it immediately and to this day it is everybody’s favorite, I make it often. When I get the chocolate crazies this is my go-to for my chocolate fix. I couldn’t do without it. I was 23 years old when I first got it and now I’m 83. Wow, a lifetime of the best chocolate cake ever. I’ve talked myself into it…..this chocolate cake is on my horizon for today, can’t wait any longer. I love your all’s show, I watch every one of them and have made MANY of your recipes, both sweet and savory. Keep them coming!
Thank you so much for the information about the cake. I'm guessing Lady Bird was a fan of it as well and probably requested it a lot. I am chuckling that it's on your horizon - I'm hoping you've already enjoyed it since you made the post! Thank you so much for being at the table with us! We love having you!
❤
Family reunion is a great place to take it too.
A family reunion is a great place to take it because it doesn't need to be refrigerated and it feeds a lot of people. Thanks for supporting our channel.
My sister gave me this recipe back in the 80s, when she moved to Texas. It is called Chocolate Flat Cake. The icing does not use, buttermilk, but evaporated milk instead. And, after putting the frosting on the cake, you put it back in the oven for five minutes to glaze. It makes it wonderful!
Yes that’s how we do the icing ( evaporated milk) I’m in Texas and we make this to bring to family gatherings.
I made this all time for my dad. Haven't made sense he passed in 1987. But I think will have to do so.❤❤
I might understand your feelings. I lived far away from my Mom, but I called her almost every night. At Christmas, I would play one Christmas song for her each night from Thanksgiving to New Years'. After she passed-on, I couldn't play that music to save my life! Here lately, I'm starting to play it, again. God bless...
👋♥️🙏♥️👋Tom I sure wish I was there. That cake looks delicious, devine, oh heck, wonderful. I wish I had some of that cake right now. Love It like I cannot describe. 😂🤣😆😁Thanks for your version of it Can’t hardly wait to make it. 👋♥️🙏♥️👋P.S. Love and blessings to both of you and have a great day and weekend ahead. Jennifer from South Mississippi.
👋♥️👋
My granddaughter sang "You are my sunshine" to my dad on his last day on earth.... my daughter says she can't sing that song anymore....I told her to start singing it again because my dad tapped his finger while her daughter was singing to him... good memories at a sad time.
My sister and I always celebrate our Mother by eating her favorite foods. She was a wonderful baker ( cook too ). She made this a lot. Always has been too sweet and rich for me. But I sure miss her baking. I miss her.
So nice you talked about your friends Becky and Bill and giving her credit for the recipe.❤️. My mother in law made this cake and gave us the recipe, her sister lived in Texas and she passed it on, it was ALWAYS a family fav! I lost the recipe, my mother in law has been gone many years, but she called it a Texas Dolly Cake😁! Thanks for the recipe, it’s soooo good!
When ever I watch you I think of my grandmother. She would always say that a good cook never waists anything. You always scrap out your bowls clean.
We hate to waste food! Thanks so much for being at the table with us.
Oh Good Lord! I don’t even want to watch this video!! Your desserts are all so wonderful and tempting but there is only 2 of us to eat them! Your big main dishes and casseroles are wonderful because we eat on them for a few nights or freeze them if you said we can. I’ve told all my friends about your channel but with caution because everything is so good! Thank you and may God continue to bless you and Melissa!
Oh man this cake looks so good I got to make it
I know, and it's just the two of us here 😢
Thank you Tom,Melissa, and Becky. God bless you
I'm 49 and I still like the bowl and beater's. Love watching y'all
?
Love your channel. You and Melissa are such a great team! God bless you, and keep the great videos coming!
I can not tell you, how much I enjoy each and everyone of your videos. You have a way about you that makes you feel like your viewers are in your kitchen while you are baking or cooking. I also love how your wife is forever reminding you of stuff. I am the same with my husband.
FYI, I freeze my buttermilk in 1/2 cups and put that into a sandwich zip bag, making sure it is really zipped and than lay the bags flat and stack them. I then put them into the freezer until I need them. Depending on how much buttermilk is called for in the recipe I am making I will take one or two bags out of the freezer and put those into the refrigerator overnight to thaw and then in the morning I take the bags out and let the buttermilk come to room temp along with all of the other ingredients. I have been doing this for years. The buttermilk might separate some, but you can shake it, I usually leave it alone and add it to the recipe as is. Just so you know, I am not a new cook or baker, I started doing those things when I was 10, I am now 73. Again, thank you both for this channel. suzie
Just read your second comment. It makes even more sense now that I've read the first one!
That’s a good idea!
It’s seems like every church potluck has a Texas sheet cake show up! Thanks for showing us how to make it.
A chocolate recipe ? ❤❤❤❤❤This looks like a moist, delicious brownie. Hi Tom and Melissa. I absolutely love the history behind your recipes.😊
I have heard that story pertaining to Lady Bird Johnson. It has to be a good cake if it originated from Texas. My mother was from Texas, and I lived in DFW area for the first ten years of my life. I'll be saving this one in memory of your friend Becky.
I’ve been making this cake for 45 years, it’s still one of our favorite cakes. I use the same recipe.
I'm a chocoholic. So this was right in my wheel house. Thank you for sharing.
Oh man!! My sister used to make this. I never had the recipe! I'm so excited that you two put this on!! It's the best cake ever!! ❤
Beginning to get addicted to your channel!! My husband and I sit here in Indiana salivating while watching your video. My Mother used to call this cake the Buttermilk Cake. Her entire family was from KY. I make this same cake but in a 13x9 inch pan and have for almost 50 years. I agree anything cooked with buttermilk is absolutely delicious….beyond words with extra moistness. My husband is watching your crockpot casserole dish from the day after Thanksgiving last year 🤗🫣. Thank you for what you and your wife are doing for us 🙏🏻❣️
We really appreciate that you and your husband are loyal subscribers to our channel. It makes my day to hear that. This an addiction I fully support! 😂
Just time for my nephew's birthday🎂 Tom, thank you for posting these wonderful, old fashioned recipes Blessings☺
Growing up in Texas, I’ve made this so so many times over the years.
I have had this recipe for 36 yrs & still love it.
My Aunt Doris from Houston, Texas
made this in the 60 ‘s
I remember how DELICIOUS ❤
I’ve been married 56 years and I’ve made this recipe for 40 yrs ,only we called it buttermilk brownies .
In 1999, my next-door neighbor passed away. Having recently had vocal cord surgery, I couldn't talk, but I sent this cake with my husband for the family. They raved about it and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I can understand how it could be called a funeral cake. It is comfort food and there are times when we really need some!
This recipe took me back many years. Texas sheet cake was my SIL’s signature “dish” for any get together. Jane unfortunately passed away from breast cancer in her early 40’s. I may have to make this in her memory. I’m not a baker, but I still may give it a try.
I am so sorry about your SIL's passing, but what a blessing to be able to make this cake in her memory. Enjoy every bite. Thanks for watching our videos!

Finally! AS much frosting as cake ... pure joy!
Such an All-American recipe- I think I’ll make it for July 4🇺🇸
My name is Kent, I'm 69 years old this June 15th. Thanks for posting this. I actually make a Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake as my base cake to make a Mississippi Mud Cake. I make the cake, then I top with marshmallows or marshmallow cream and then top with a chocolate frosting and sprinkle with nuts! ...And, if that wasn't enough, I pair it with Baskin & Robbins Rocky Road Ice Cream; theirs' is the darkest chocolate ice cream! Thank you so much for all y'all do! I love to watch your videos! I appreciate you so much!
I was wondering if this cake is different from Mississippi Mud Cake. My aunt used to make that.
Back in the early 70s this was the most popular dessert at showers and birthday parties. It was known as Linda’s Sister’s Mother’s Chocolate Cookie Sheet Cake. I lost the recipe many years ago and I am so happy you are presenting it. Thank you ! One thing we did differently, we poked holes in the cake with a wooden spoon and then spread the frosting. I can’t wait to make this!
I have made this cake for years now. I have never met anyone who doesn't like it.
We enjoy your cooking videos. Hubby and I enjoy your presentation and preparation.
So nice of you to make this in memory of your dear friend. I have a recipe for Texas sheet cake. the ingredients are a little different, but I haven't had it in years. Battery-operated sifter, what a great idea, might have to get myself one. I love how you give your wife the first bite of what you make.
This brings back so many fond memories of family and church events. We often needed more than one person to bring this because it was so popular and everyone wanted second helpings!!
A family favorite that my mom provided me with a handwritten recipe card box of all our family favorite recipes. She has been gone almost 21 years and I treasure her handwritten recipe cards.
A Handwritten recipe card box is indeed a treasure. How wonderful! I bet it's full of great recipes that connects you to wonderful memories!
I first had this cake when my best friend's mother made it for our church youth group in 1965, I was 13 (I'm 71 now.). It is the best cake ever! I've made it many times thru the years.
The only thing to say is….YUM!
Dead giveaway. You, for the most part, are never short on words. But you paused for a good while after that bite.
I can’t wait to try it. Thank you
I have been eating that exact cake all my life. My mother's great aunt got that recipe from a newspaper in the late 50s somewhere. When she moved in with us in Del Rio in 1963, she would make that cake once a week. Brings back a lot of memories.
We love reading stories like this that you shared with us. Thank you very much for being a part of our channel and joining us at the table.
I grew up in the midwest having this cake. I was taught to spread the frosting with the nuts in it......took forever. Now I sprinkle nuts over top of hot baked cake the frost it by drizzling the warm frosting over the nuts. Easy Peasy.
Just make sure you don't cut a lot of the tip of the baggy off......you need a small opening to drizzle evenly over cake
The heat from frosting and cake will help spread the frosting on its own.
I buy the dry buttermilk and make it whenever I need it.
My Mom used to make this cake all the time. Loved it. I have the recipe somewhere. I also remember that Mom had a hard time finding the sheet pan, no Amazon then 😂😂😂😂
My family (in Texas) uses this exact recipe for the cake and the frosting except for one thing. We add 2 teaspoons of cinnamon to the cake mix. Sometimes called a Mexican chocolate cake due to the cinnamon.
When I make this cake for church potluck, there's typically none left over. Delicious!
Omg! That’s looks absolutely delicious 😋🤤! I’m a near 60 year old woman, born and raised in Dallas, TX and I grew up eating this cake.. yum!
I don't believe I have ever had this chocolate cake dessert, I think it's time I do!❤❤
I make my own buttermilk but putting a lemon into the milk - works fine when I make Amish apple cake.
Speak for yourself Tom saying you only want a thin layer of frosting. When I make it I make one and a half times the frosting because I always want more of that delicious frosting. 😂. This cake reminds me of two ladies I worked with in the “90’s. They each had their own recipe and story to this cake. Thank you for the throwback. I love this cake.
Another great receipe. Thanks for showing it. My dear Sis in law used to make this.I had to laugh about taking the sheild off too soon. I would love to know where you got your cookie jar. You use so many phrases that my family always used. My best to you and Melissa. Keep up the good work. I always look forward to each new video.
I found the cookie jar at a local Peddler's Mall. It's an M.A. Hadley cookie jar. It was actually in a booth owned and run by one of our former school principals. I LOVE it!
Thank you for your kind, encouraging words. We appreciate you watching our videos and supporting our channel.
Waving at you from Texas!! This is one of our very favorite cakes and you made me hungry for it. Thanks! You are great at this recipes sharing video business.
I'm waving back! 👋
I put a tsp of cinnamon in the cake mix. Being from Indiana, I loved hearing that the cake was once called "Hoosier" cake. My recipe was called Texas Sheet Cake from the beginning.
LOVE your vlogs!!!
Thank you so much! We really appreciate that you are watching our channel!
I have been making this delicoius cake since 1962.
Thank you for sharing. The first time i tasted it at a friend's home i thought I had died and gone to heaven!
A cake from my childhood. 💕 I’m 75 years old.
It's a great cake no matter how old we get! Thanks so much for being at the table with us.
I’ve been making this cake since the 1960’s. The only difference is that we used an 8 by 12 pan. Scrumptious! Greetings from Devine, Texas.
I made this cake for many years as Mississippi Mud Cake, and we loved it!
This Texas Chocolate Sheet Cake recipe looks so delicious 😋 Mr. Tom.
I enjoy your channel. My mother made this cake for many years. I buy a half gallon of buttermilk and freeze what is left in plastic cups that hold one half cup and use them as needed.
It can be hard to use up all the buttermilk if you aren't a fan of drinking it (which we are not). Freezing it like that is a really smart idea. We appreciate that you shared our ideas with us.
I've never seen a sifter like that.. That is awesome!
Just stopping by to tell you how much I appreciate all you do with your mighty fine cooking and baking and, well, everything else. Thank you!
I love Texas sheet cake! I've made it before and I'll make it again! Love youll s videos!
Absolutely appreciate the both of you 😊😊 and it looks Yummy delicious
Love it! Have made it many times but without the nuts!
Definitely one of my very favorite cakes. I started making this in 1972 in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Always a winner.
Yummy those cookies also sound delicious
I favor this recipe because the Cocoa powder is cooked, allowing it to 'bloom'. The ladies who spoiled me in the '60s cooked frosting, too. Good show and thank you...🇺🇸 👍☕
That is so posh, a battery-operated shifter! I remember Mom's crank operated one, I use a sieve.
Thanks for the Texas sheet cake recipe. It was all the rage at church suppers back in the 80's. You had a cheap version, with substituting margarine and sour milk and some other things, and a fancy one with sour cream and so forth. They all are great! I will try yours at our next pitch in!
Since I have a hard time finding buttermilk where I live, I use Saco Buttermilk Powder. I added 2 tablespoons of the powder to my dry ingredients and 1/2 cup water to the wet ingredients. Followed the recipe as you directed and it turned out great!
Although I live in Buckley, Washington, I have great memories of Kentucky. My father was from Louisville. My husband was stationed at Fort Knox for 10 years so I had a chance to spend time with aunts and uncles. And my Aunt Ruth taught me how to cook.
Your channel brings back a lot of fond memories.
We love that food can connect us to sweet people and places in our memories! We loved reading your stories. Thank you for joining us at the table. Hope you have a great weekend.
Love this cake
One of my favorite cakes.
Your right ! That cake is so delicious!!!
Made this today with my granddaughter. Good night nurse!! This is exceptional!!!
It really is phenomenal! We are so happy to read that you made this today. Thank you so much for being at our table.
I love chocolate! A definite favorite!❤
Thank you for sharing! I can't wait to make it.
Oh my that looks amazing!
Oh how I love eating a slice of this cake. One of the best!
That's awesome.
Yum! Haven't had this cake in years. My mom made it in 9 x 12 pan & did icing without nuts so if wanted nuts she put some on top for part of cake. I liked with nuts!
Used to make for my daughter but haven't made since she moved out many years ago. Time to dust off that recipe along with some other great ones! Thanks for sharing Becky's recipe!
One of our most favorite cakes. The white sheet cake is good too
It looks delicious and very moist
My stepmother made this for us in the early 1970s. When I began making it myself I decided on a little more cocoa in the frosting and I sprinkle chocolate chips on top of the cake batter before baking. I need to get to the store for some buttermilk! 🙂
We are glad to hear that you are getting ingredients to make it again. We really appreciate that you are at the table with us.
I think this must be the frosting my husband has always talked about his mother making. He & his brother said you could peel the icing off the cake in a layer. I would think that's because it's kinda like fudge. I'm really excited to try this. The sheet cake looks very simple to make too.
Btw, I have this same kind of shield for my KitchenAid & I love it.
Thank you, Melissa for always putting the recipe in the description box. It's so much better than having to go to a separate website. Bless you both.😊
I hope this is THE recipe for your husband's favorite frosting. Thanks for watching our videos and supporting our channel.
Brown sugar icing ,cooked gets like candy on top of chocolate cake ..you can break it off.
My mom made this so many times, delicious!! She started making it back in the 70’s.
My husband and I recently started watching your videos. Everything looks delicious and we have even made a few of them! And you guys seem like such a nice couple. Keep 'em coming!
We are so glad to have you with us. We hope you can find lots of recipes on our channel to enjoy. We've had a great time creating our channel and we hope to keep it going for a very long time.
Every video I've noticed Tom never takes a piece of cake that's a corner. I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the corners of a cake, lol 😅. If I could I'd only eat the center pieces 🙂🦋
He tries to cut out a piece that will photograph well for the thumbnail so people can see what the cake looks like. When it comes to something like brownies, I tend to prefer an edge or corner because I like the texture of the edges! Thanks so much for watching our channel. It's great having you at the table with us.
A work of art!🏆
Thank you for sharing!
Love this recipe ❤❤❤
This looks delicious ! I am definitely making this. I appreciate you and Melissa so much.
One of my favorite cakes. Great for special events as you stated.
This sounds so delicious!! Thank you for sharing!!
No wonder your videos are so organized and instructions so clear and precise, you’re a teacher! Me too. Excellent!
Those presentation skills are pretty easy to spot! Teachers try hard to make it as clear and understandable as possible. Thank you so much for being at our table.
What a beautiful tribute to your friend Becky. ❤
Tom has such sweet memories of her. And the cake is just totally fantastic!
Sounds awesome. I will make it soon
Love the way you set up the counter with the ingredients in a row . Love the corn pudding !
