I can't even look at this guy without sheding a tear. He's so sweet as a human being, so injured, but yet so impactful as a speaker. God bless him and his family.

Well, according to Christianity, God isn't there to ensure an easy life for us. He want's us to be valuable and good beings, we get there by conquering challenges in life and a deep belief in God helps on the way. Also, for Christians, the death isn't the end, just a milestone. Both the wife and the son should be now in a better world, waiting for this man, when his time comes. So in a long run, he won't lose them. And in the meantime... well, he's clearly an inspiration for a great many of people.
Do you know C. S. Lewis? The author of Narnia Chronicles? He lived almost all life as an bachelor, only when he was in his fifties, he got married. she was his friend and he married her to help her with immigration problem, but later when she was diagnosed with cancer, their relationship evolved to something greater and they changed their civilian marriage to Christian. They had few short years together and she died, leaving two sons behing and deeply sorrowed husband. It was cruel faith against the husband who found love of his life so late, wasn't it? Maybe, but in his sorrow he wrote a great book about losing his wife, which serves as inspiration and source of solace for those who lose loved one. He had written about something similar earlier, but if you compare those two books - the first one is an academic analysis of sorrow and loss from Christian point of view, while from the other is much more touching, because you feel the author's pain. So a tragedy for one family became a source of inspiration and solace for the rest of the humanity.
And I believe, that this man (and other families) are also using their pain in a meaningfull way. And it's the fault of humans, not of God, that there is a need for a big tragedy, before some sorrely needed changes start to take place. There were school shootings before and still, this young man with a history of serious mental problems was able to legaly obtain a very powerfull weapon and a great amount of ammunition.
