Your patience far exceeds mine. After a handful of nothing but friction primers I think I would say "I am done". But the one intact bullet was interesting especially since it had the primer dimpled. The firing pin engaged but the powder did not ignite. Interesting to see. Safe travels back home.
Gin, that one bullet you found is still a live round. The primer is dimpled which means it was fired but didn't go off. I'm sure there is likely still power in there. It's not dangerous just sitting around or anything like that but I did want to let you know it is still a live round. Black Powder doesn't degrade with age. It's probably wet and wouldn't fire right now however.

I'm sorry you were not feeling well during the hunt, but you are a real trooper. I didn't know you were ill until I saw the text on the screen. I hope you are feeling better. The April 1887 45 cartridge (i.e., case and bullet) has a primer dent and must have been a dud, but it makes a great relic. The cannon friction primers are interesting, especially those with intact side pipes. Did you know the design made them functional even in the rain?

If you ever would like to hunt colonial artifacts in the north east I would be more then excited to have you come hunt. Besides all of the Revolutionary War artifacts and Colonial coins from pre America (1776) there's also many shallow water creeks with old colonial coins and modern jewelry from the canoers. What a change of pace it would be having a smart pretty young lady detecting. You'll distract the male swimmers and they'll lose a ton of stuff
The cartridge you found is an M83 pistol round made by the Federal Arsenal in 1887. In 1873 and 74 the army procured colts in 45 colt and then Smith and Wesson Schofields in 45 Schofield. The two cartridges would not interchange due to length and rim diameters. In 1883 the federal arsenal designed and began producing a cartridge that could be used in either revolver. The M83, caliber 45, revolver. Yours appears to be a misfire. Technically still a live round. Fox out.
Your whole shell is a dud. Someone tried to fire it and it didn't go off. The Peters shells are really old. Probably were paper shells. Really cool and really old stuff. There is probably a cannon ball out there somewhere. Keep on hunting, my fellow detectorists.

So pretty amazing to think that there were cannon firing right where you were digging.
Some of our guys call them Buzzard buttons as well. We find them fairly often form the old military post at Fort Oglethorpe, GA.
