    With Venezuela’s economy in shambles, Venezuelans have been turning to online games like RuneScape to make a living. For this video I interviewed the owner of an OSRS Account Training service that hires Venezuelans at $0.60 - $1.00 USD an hour. This video explores topics like how much money they make, what their working conditions are like, how they get into providing services for online games like RuneScape and OSRS.
    ►Oldschool Runescape (2007) is provided by Jagex.

      Crumb I like how you are sponsored by someone but maybe you could clarify how medal's business model works. You preface the ad with the fact that he ran a RSPS and in my mind I would immediately jump to hacking and things of that nature when referring to a product he is offering. I'm sure that other viewers might think the same way so maybe if you just added a bit more info/context, I might be more inclined to install medal

    I’d much rather have real people playing for people’s accounts that in turn allow them to eat for a week than have more and more bots enter the game. I think even Jagex could agree with that. These are real people enjoying the game and also supporting them selves, not fucking 15 year olds running 15 bots at once. I try to remain objective in all cases but morality takes over for me here, this supersedes the rules of an online game. Exceptions shouldn’t be made but I say Jagex should “overlook” them for lack of a better word.

    • @ilikedota5
      @ilikedota5 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm pretty sure Jagex if questioned, will simply say we want to focus on the larger problem of organized bot farms and will triage the issue, allowing individuals trying to feed their families. Also, its probably not worth the effort to stop the individuals trying to feed themselves.

    I speak little Spanish but met this Venezuelan dude who farms BBDs to sell. We've been talking for about 8 months now every time I log in. He's a pretty cool dude with no job n trying to provide for his wife and daughter. At the one hand I hate that it affects the in-game economy but on the other side there's real people having to feed mouths.

      @vv2955 5 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      Yup. Even if these Venezuelan RWTs are technically breaking the rules of the game, I don't complain about them. Some of these people are fighting to SURVIVE. If the alternative is to let my family starve without a roof over their heads you can be sure as heck I'm not giving a shit about some online game's TOS. Automated bots are another matter, but someone grinding twelve hours a day on Green Dragons to earn a loaf of bread deserves my respect.

    Crumb, I'd just like to say I'm a massive fan of these interviews, and really appreciate how you do them. The fact that you always stress that the practices mentioned are against the rules and that you don't endorse them is commendable. Also, how you are very personal and in depth with interviews, showing the human side, while maintaining objectivity. Please keep up the awesome work! There's a lot of douchebaggery I see in Runescape from players living in 1st worlds scaremongering about Venezuelans and thinking little of it, but I know the kind of situation they're in and dont fuss over it.
    And if Jagex bans some of em it's pretty much their game so of course they can do that.

    Now this video has put me onto two different spectrums. One being that people do play OS(RS) for a job [Twitch, TH-cam, etc] but we also have people playing it because there's not much left they could do. In first world countries we just get jobs at fast-food if you cant get any other better paying job. The second spectrum being that it's life or death essentially. They play to provide for their family, not to have fun and grind for that boss/skilling pet. Looking at my OSRS bank, I could feed family for months I suppose, but I even make $1500 every paycheck straight out of highschool.. Now that's kinda f*cked up lol..

    I'm working for a non-profit organisation focused on providing basic necessities in areas around the globe where it's needed the most. Currently we're also operating in Venezuela, where millions of people flee their country, because they will die from hunger and can't make a living anymore. I actually am really glad that there still are people who found alternative ways to forsee themselves and their families in money to be able to get some food on their tables. This actually makes me want to support the Venezualian players instead of wanting them to leave the game. It's all for good matters to change the world, and this is on a big scale, believe me.
    Thank you for bringing this info out, so more people will know about the daily struggles in Venezuela. It's actually sad to see that people don't understand why they're in the game, grinding for those gp's. If the country was in a healthy state, they weren't even doing this.

U.S wants them to play by U.S rules while Russia wants to help but have their own agenda as well. Its like the Cold War never left Latin America. On topic now .. let’s be honest of course it breaks rules. These people will do anything to feed there families and even though it’s wrong, I would do the same thing for my family if I were in the same shoes. Over half of the OSRS community buys GP. All of the materials we buy are because of the farmers. They make this game literally.
    For the people who haven’t been through a tough time in life, just take a moment and think what would you do if you had to provide for your family. No answer is required because you know you’d do ANYTHING to feed them. Have a great day.

    I've said it before. Jagex's rules are not excessive as far as gameplay, the ONLY thing I think they're bad about at times is speech censorship. (I.E. I've seen two people arguing, both insulting but the one with political views closer to jagex's reports the other and ultimately gets their 'opponents' chat shut off.) That aside: Jagex has zero obligation to slowly kill their own company because of a foreign government's bad decisions. If you hurt the game, you should be banned.

    • @p51mustang24
      @p51mustang24 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a problem with a lot of games and social media right now. if you don't tow the neo-liberal line you will get banned from lots of platforms.
      Don't forget you can be arrested in the UK (where jagex is based) for hate speech, and their definition of hate speech is pretty loose. One guy got arrested for teaching his dog to do "nazi" salutes as a gag. Other people have been arrested for criticizing islam and its influence on the UK.

      You know, I'm not so sure about that. Venezuela has an insane amount of economic sanctions put on them, not only by our government, but many other governments as well. So how are they able to sell their goods and products or buy any from other first world countries? The most impressive thing Venezuela has done was nationalized their main resource--oil. Imagine what it would be like if the US nationalized their oil. Instead of putting all of the oil money in to the pockets of a rich, elite few, it goes in the pocket of every US citizen. I think that would have profound effects on our country. Obviously Venezuela has some problems, but I don't think that comes close to meaning that capitalism beats socialism.

    • @MasterLPG

      Easy to say when a dictatorship calls itself socialist, seeing as most dictators don't like calling themselves as such, but then again I reckon it suits me having you Americans work on a slave's wage, sweating your blood all just to live for another year for the big corporations, seeing as all that business with terrorists and immigrants has you Yankees all worked up and buying guns like crazy! A bad thing? Maybe, but the NRA has been getting a lot of money from you folks and thus being more successful, which is a good thing for me with those investments back in 2011-12 having risen A LOT in just a few years, so yes *"capitalism beats socialism... again"* indeed! ;)

    • @YesYES-no8kf
      @YesYES-no8kf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      niftyat12 Exactly. People always blame socialism but socialist countries have these insane sanctions on them that basically destroy their global economy which is caused by capitalist countries. On top of that, more often than not, their leaders get murdered and replaced with terrible dictators

      @@niftyat12 ... You aren't considering the human psychology of it. People, in general, will be lazy unless they get rewarded for trying, no matter the country. Capitalism rewards hard work and effort more than socialism does, by definition. Increasing the GDP drastically in capitalistic countries. Tell me, will you seriously try as hard in Runescape if you were forced, at gunpoint, to give most of that to everyone at the GE, including all the scammers and beggers? No. You wouldn't. At all. Because you could do the same shit as them and still gain nearly as much wealth as if you try hard as hell grind out money making methods.
      Based on human psychology alone, socialism and communism encourage laziness and lack of productivity. Which is bad for a country. Sorry, but that's just how the world works. If you look at the statistics and facts it will prove me right.
      Even if socialism and communism have good intentions, they are failed ideas in the end. And will always remain failed ideas.

      This really is so complex and difficult to think about.
      Yeah letting them use the game this way SEEMS to be the morally correct thing to do.
      But people need to realize that this game was NEVER intended to support a fucking country.
      They NEVER intended for this game to do that.
      And it really shouldn't be our or the game developer's responsibility for what is happening in Venezuela.
      But at the same time, in their shoes, what else is there?
      This is crazy.
      The best that one can come up with is ACTUALLY helping them in real time outside of a video game like you said.

    Ban detection is not just client based, but also ip based. It’s not the service it’s where their ip is located if it sees you’re always playin in the us and an ip from another country logs in and does stuff or trains the account it’s flagged and monitored.

    It doesn't really matter, it's sucks they're in the situation but it doesn't give you a right to trample over others or to break rules. Jagex has the right to allow it yes and anyone would do it if it meant survival (no one would starve over selling runescape gold) but you are responsible for your actions. If you break the rules and your account gets terminated that's just a part of the game you're playing. So I don't think an exception should be made.
