When I made my rarest account video on March 4th, I didn't expect a $20,000 RuneScape to get deleted. I certainly didn't expect hundreds of other rare OSRS names to get removed too. This video is a rare look into the bizarre drama that surrounds ultra-rare RuneScape names.

Sounds like abbrivations tried stabbing the buyer of 5 in the back, got the name deleted along with causing the chain ban of 100s of names. And magically ended up getting the name back, pays to be the villian.

@@irollup6240 it pays to be a villain is a common English phrase, it means that being evil usually results in you getting what you want. And in reality it does. Its been quoted in many media such as spider-man, buzz lightyear from toy story, james bond in golden gun, walter white in breaking bad just to name a few. Being good has no reward besides self satisfaction while evil pays.

I believe that AJ is the actual owner of the account and such abbreviations hijacked the account, sold it, and then wanted the name back so he could sell it again not expecting that he wouldn't be able to transfer it again.

My guess is that he is the one who hacked the account. Then he sold it. Then later on, he emails you to try to get it back to resell it. And he probably did, and sold it again, which is why it was banned.
I honestly think in cases like this the name should be bound to the original account. 5 should own 5 no matter who currently owns that account.
What would stop the original owner from reselling it later? Or just giving it the acc to a friend? Or if he moves cross country and his IP changes?

I had a small list of available 3 character names, checked them a week after that and they were all banned/deleted from the game. Now it makes sense.
Sad how a company can just do that to a customer that's like going to a theme park and getting cotton candy creating the cotton candy yourself then paying for it only for it to be taken from you 7 seconds after the fact. So sad! Shouldn't be like this. It's wrong. dont you feel wronged?

@@coldtea7 an American company recent bought RuneScape for upwards of $100m if I remember correctly. The game makes money. It's just been corporatized to focus on maximum profits for the guys at the top. I'm a super capitalist type person, but at the end of the day, most people don't understand how "fiduciary responsibilities" work and why people should be mad at that more than anything.

@@LiamsMusic78 Same. I beat every campaign on my main and then mainly played a presearing only character. I still log in from time to time for the pet gifts and some dye runs.
One thing to look into is the old mayhem makers post about recovering old accounts due to a flaw in the recovery system back in 2007-2009. Ive been around since 2002 and you did not see all these rare names running around until this recovery method was mass leaked. 99% of 1 letter names are not original owners more so bought or hacked with the method mentioned above. You could literally type a bunch of bull in the recovery page and have a 50/50 shot of getting it, as long as it was a inactive account.
Can confirm. Recovered my friends childhood account with just his name, username, his mother’s name, and address. Nowadays I can’t even recover my own old accounts with 90% of the information being accurate.
I was able to recover an account in the "first 1000" list, with every recovery question I just put cabbage as the answer. I tried this with 3-4 accounts and was only successful once. That name was actually sniped when i was trying to transfer in around 2011.

is there a chance people use it to steal names and ask for ransom? because my account name was very, very specific and not at all interesting. like it has never once showed me a match in any other account database, yet someone took it when i was inactive for like 5 months

AJ has had the F account for at least as long as I've been playing OSRS, about the time raids 1 came out. He used to hang out in the same CC I did and would log into the account to blow everyone's minds. But this is just laughable how sketchy the whole thing is. Abbreviations isn't even trying to hide it.

I was surprised to see him in the video, we met at pest control less than a year ago and started talking, then added each other and became friends. I was carrying the low level boat with my maxed main, which I do when I'm bored sometimes. We didn't talk much after that so I ended up deleting him, but I did ask him how much he paid for his name and he said his brother gifted it to him just like the video states. I always thought it didn't sound believable at all. I have a semi-rare name myself that I got when it was still available around 2006ish but 1 letter names are an entirely different story.

I happen to know the player with the name F through the soup CC he mentioned in the CC like a year or two years ago that he also used to have 5 but it was stolen from him.. So honestly I believe him since it he mentioned it way before all this drama..
I honestly believe Aj had 5 hijacked by abbrivation, and he somehow managed to frame Aj, since he was the only person who could get that name back besides abbrivation himself. It doesnt require a mastermind to see that abbrivation was Selling and hoping to get the name back to resell it again for real world $. I hope Jagex looks into it more, and actually hear Aj out.

Jagex should just add an auction system for names in game. That way there is no way the names would be sniped, and Jagex can follow the money. If it gets sold it's the name seller that should get punished, not the buyer.

Such abbreviations wants to get the double trouble payment for selling 5 again, bet he would also then spam jagex support to get it back another time for the triple.

I used to know these 2 guys that wrote an elaborate script to autocheck/steal names as they became available. It supposedly ran on auto-pilot 24/7, and had accounts sitting at tutorial island ready to go all the time. I know a few of the names they sold, but didn't buy any from them. They basically had it set to prioritize 1/2/3 character names in any combination, as well as cross referencing any runescape words, as well as the whole dictionary of correctly spelled english words. I don't know if they're still up to it, but one of them still plays regularly and doesn't appear to be banned.
This game's black market is nuts. I only knew about it because I was in their clan and often PVM'd with them for a few months. Nice enough guys just trynna pay the bills I guess.
seriously these rare usernames should just be account bound - not allowed to change name, and if you do the name is just unusable by anyone forever

Name selling and buying doesn't really feel like in the spirit of the game and I honestly think the entire practice of hoarding and sniping names should be wholly banned. It leads compromised accounts, rwting, etc, and nothing good can really come of that.

Names are worth as much as people will pay for them. Just cause some guy somewhere got high one night and blew 20k for this name (assuming it was ever even sold for that price) does not mean name merchers would pay anywhere close to 20k for an RSN

All this bullshit could be solved so easily by them implementing an in game system to trade names. Would cut out the middleman and scams and make the whole process fair. Sell names on a GE-like exchange

after watching this i tried to login to my old accounts that didnt have emails set, and although they are banned , they are all hacked. Thinking that the person who ran the bots pre-eoc either leaked their info or hacked them himself.
It would be cool if Jagex had a name trading system built into the game a bit like an auction. Put a % auction fee so it acts as a cash sink too.
Won't fully deter people from RWT, but might legitimise it for some. Would make it easier to spot hacks etc too.

It's so surreal. We live in a day and age where a name inside a videogame is worth months of rent, multiple preowned cars (lot cars, not dealership cars), expensive and life changing medical procesures, some college tuitions, or a large percentage of someone's tuition. A handful of pixels is being put on the same pedistal as everything else listed above. But, with none of the staying power.

I had the 3 letter username "ngq" which I was very happy with as to me it meant "never gonna quit" but then while I was chopping redwoods on mobile suddenly I got a pop up screen asking me to choose a new username. I was extremely dissatisfied and tried to contact customer support but got no help. I quit shortly after that and recently started playing again but now I play f2p and will not be supporting Jagex due to this reason.

Many moons ago, I used to sell my WOW account, then I would report it stolen after I got payed. I did it 5 times I think before I got banned. It payed my rent in my first place for half a year!

I saw my runescape name Susanna on the list. I'm not sure how why it is up there since I made it, and I can still play on it to this day, but there was another name I recognize and it's Edge. I remember meeting him at Edge pking in F2P a decade ago lol.

March 13th, 2017; Jagex released names of inactive accounts. They probably looked at 5, released it, let someone claim it; and then someone sold it afterwards. At least that's what it seems like they attempted to convey.
