Chevy Silverado 4L60-E Transmission Filter & Fluid Replacement How-To

- This video will show you how to drain and replace the internal transmission filter on the GM 4L60-E transmission this was done on a 2002 Chevy Silverado but is also used in Chevy, GMC, Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac, Hummer, Saab, Oldsmobile, and Isuzu. This transmission was used in these vehicles from 1993-2014. Transmission filter and fluid was purchased from Amazon and I have provided a link below. Make sure you check your transmission pan before ordering a filter. The deep pan will have a step down that covers 3/4 of the bottom of the pan and the shallow pan will be completely flat. I will provide links to both filters below.

Living in a winter salt area Ottawa Canada.........I tried to remove the two bolts for the shift bracket..........and..........no way in he'll......cursing the engineers all along. What!!!!!!!you mean they oouldn't use two hex bolts????? When they design cars they believe the vehicle will live its whole life in nice warm temperate weather.....Ha!!! Some videos show just bending the bracket . That works for me😊
I’m located in Colorado and the vehicles just don’t rust like they do up north so I’m kinda lucky on the vehicles I work on but I totally agree with you on these engineers don’t consider things like that.
Same here in Northern Alberta just bent the bitch out of the way it was easier that way
Well sir I want to take this time to say you are a true mechanic because nowhere on TH-cam or anywhere else that I can find regarding the shift cable bracket it is a pain in the ass trying to get that oil pan off. That fluid looked really good actually. Watched your video while back on the Grand Cherokee transmission drain/fill. I had a buddy do mine at his shop. I bought the Mopar pan with the removable filter, so next time the change will be a little cheaper. Good stuff!
Yeah it wasn’t to bad this was actually my brothers truck with 170k and since he’s owned he’s never changed it.
thanks for showing the whole process. A bunch of videos out there are 60 seconds long showing the "trick" to get the pan off. No one really shows the removal of the shift bracket like you did. I've been struggling with that thing with a T40 socket, but I'm going to run out and buy a T40 wrench like you used.
To follow up, the torx bolt stripped out. I was able to remove it with vice grips, clamped down on it over the driveshaft and whacked it with a dead blow hammer. Came loose with one hit. Got a couple hex bolts to replace the torx so I wont have the issue ever again. PS, I still have to jack up the trans a bit and pull down a little on the exhaust (very little) to slip the pan out.
Can you use dex/merc fluid? I have a bunch of that and can’t get a full answer online. Half the people say it’s fine others say it’ll ruin the trans
That should work just look on the label and make sure it meets the requirements of dexron III or dexron VI and you’ll be good.
Great stuff. That shift linkage bracket is a major pain. Question though did you end up using a Alan Torx wrench what do you use the swivel socket head?
Yeah definitely a challenge I ended up just using the Alan torx wrench.
Greatest video training I have seen. Sir you did a excellent job. I do have a question if you don't mind. Since you did the drain and got 5 qts out and refill. Would you not want to do just a drain and refill once or twice more? Since the 4L-60E contains approx 11 qts there was more fluid in the torque converter and other parts of the transmission that was not replaced.
Some people do it that way to get fresh fluid throughout the whole transmission. The guy I did this for choose to just do a filter and fluid replacement and wants me to do it again in about 20k miles. But either way works just fine. Just don’t go to have it flushed because that will just create problems.
I think there is 2 bolts on that heat shield. Take the shield off and pan should slide to the left.
You take a half inch water pipe nipple that is probably 10 in long and put a T handle on the end of it you can screw it up into that seal that's up in that valve body, you can pull it right out of there. You with a t-handle would even have a ability to tap it with a hammer if you make the tool long enough.
Dexron 6 works just fine. Dexron 3 or better is what that dipstick should say. I try not to listen to dipstix too much LOL

It should be the same transmission in the video 4l60e they used this in the 4.3 as well.
Now my pan won't come out cause the exhaust pipe is in the way.is there a way around Taking it out without the removal of the exhaust?
GM used to use the pan bolts for the bracket; WTH???

Filter and fluid change after 230,000 miles with no noticeable issues?
This is kinda of a 50/50 subject I’ve done it on other vehicles with this amount of miles and the original fluid and filter with no issues. The one thing you don’t want to do is go have it flushed somewhere because that just will just cause problems. Just dropping the pan and filter only introduces a little bit of new fluid because the torque converter still holds a lot of fluid that won’t drain out. Personally I don’t think you’ll have any issues just dropping the pan and changing out the filter as long as you use the correct fluid and then maybe in 20k miles just do a drain and refill to help introduce more new fluid in the system. What does your fluid look like right now on the dipstick? Is it brown colored or does it smell burnt?

Am wondering how much clearance is there on the 4L60 between it and the crosspipe on this vehicle, versus the clearance on a 99 Sierra. Does the fact of this Silverado being 4WD make a difference? I like the video but am concerned I'll get under the truck and find I need to drop the exhaust and/or jack the transmission to get the right clearance on a deep pan 4L60. Thoughts?

@@JohnDoesItAll I did this job yesterday on my 2WD Sierra with the 4L60E. My cats were replaced with an Evan Fischer set years ago. I think those cats had a little extra length that put the crossover down an extra quarter to half inch. I only needed to move the shift linkage and bracket out of the way. Pan dropped right out.

@@JohnDoesItAll Cool. I don't recall if the video says it, but the two hidden bolts that hold the shift linkage in place are T-40 on my trans. I could only get one to come out so I used a prybar to spread the bracket over, using the stuck bolt as a pivot. That may help you out.
