How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid and Filter in GM transmissions 4L60-E, 4L65-E and 4L70-E
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER REPLACEMENT
- Start loosening oil pan bolts from back to front
- Place oil drain pan under the transmission oil pan to catch oil
- Slowly undo transmission oil pan bolts around pan and allow the transmission fluid to drain into the container
- Remove the transmission oil pan and the transmission oil pan gasket
- Remove transmission oil filter by pulling it down
- Remove pan transmission pan gasket if it wasn't remove with filter
IMPORTANT: Make sure you remove the filter seal. The filter seal may be stuck in the pump; if necessary, carefully use pliers or another suitable tool to remove the transmission filter seal
IMPORTANT: Make sure you clean transmission oil pan gasket surfaces. All traces of the old gasket material must be removed
IMPORTANT: Clean the Transmission Case gasket surface very well. All traces of the old gasket material must be removed.
- Coat new filter seal with clean transmission fluid and install into the transmission case. Tap the seal into place gently using a appropriate socket size (19mm for my Hummer H3).
- Install the new filter into the case
- Position gasket on top of pan properly
- Install the oil pan and a new gasket. Tighten bolts by hands
IMPORTANT: Tighten the oil pan to transmission case in criss cross pattern to your vehicle torq spec. For my Hummer H3: 16 N.m (12 lb ft)
Finish tightening to your vehicle torque spec. For my Hummer H3 - 70 N.m (51 lb ft)
- To start filling new transmission fluid to the proper level - measure how much of old fluid you drained. Always use the proper automatic transmission fluid listed. Using incorrect automatic transmission fluid may damage the vehicle.
Before checking the fluid level, perform the following:
1. Start the engine and park the vehicle on a level surface.
2. Apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in PARK (P).
3. Depress the brake pedal and move the shift lever through each
gear range, pausing for about 3 seconds in each range. Then,
move the shift lever back to PARK (P).
4. Allow the engine to idle 500-800 RPM for at least 1 minute.
Slowly release the brake pedal.
5. Keep the engine running and observe the transmission fluid
temperature (TFT)
If TFT temperature is 27-32°C (80-90°F) - use Cold Check Procedure
If TFT temperature is 82-93°C (180-200°F) - use Hot Check Procedure
IMPORTANT: Check the cold fluid level reading for initial fill only
Hot Check Procedure:
Use this procedure to check the transmission fluid level
when the Transmission fluid temperature is between
82-93°C (180-200°F) and engine is idling. To assist in reaching the correct temperature range of 82-93°C (180-200°F), drive the vehicle in second gear
at no more than 65 mph until the desired temperature is reached.

Thank you very much!
Thanks from France for this video.
No music, no blabla...only the job
👍
Glad you liked it!
Took me 7 hours of continuous labor to change the gasket the filter clean it up the pan and put everything back together and doing it with out a jack or another person. It sucks but worth it!! 1996 GMC SONOMA 🦅 🇺🇸 🎇
... and you know that it is done properly! Awesome
@@NewRoad thank you for the video boss!
So what I did is I made a wet vac with my shop vac, sealable 5 gallon bucket, and some ⅜" clear vinyl tubing. Firstly, I sucked what I could out of the dipstick tube, then, Once I had the pan loose and opened enough, I just sucked out all the fluid so I didn't have to deal with the Niagara falls of ATF. Worked fairly well
Sounds like a good way to prevent mess, but I never had problem since I take my time ...
Good advice, my only question is how do you get the fraction like that?
Thanks for this brother, most videos show transfer case when tapping automatic transmission fluid for hummer h3, why this is beats the hell out of me
Fantastic video. Got her done today with your help. You are awesome.
Glad it helped!
Great video! While you're right there, might as well replace that shift cable bushing. They go out at the most inconvenient times.
Loved the steak knife and hammer combo 👌 superb my friend lol
Nice work, very thorough.
Thank you
AMAZING Humman!
Great procedure and video explanation!
I would add two very important steps to your procedure:
-First: Must replace the Boost Valve in the pump assembly (you have access to it with Oil Pan removed) with the Booster Boost Valve made by SONNAX. For h3 is the Sonnax 4l60-LB2 booster boost Valve.
Its so important! In 4l60e the main cause of burned clutches and poor shifting over time is the decrease in pressure due to Worn Out Boost Valve. That Boost Valve needs to be replaced each 50000 miles...and nobody takes care of it...that is usually the reason why so many people rebuild their 4l60e to burn clutches again very soon...because they didnt fix the cause of poor line pressure.
-Second is to add to the Transmission a bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Fix as a preventative maintenance...this is only my suggestion but transmission seems to work colder and stronger with this additive in each oil change.
(Another cause of poor line pressure is a worn out Separator plate betweem valve body and transmission...usually this happen in the hole where the check balls seat...the balls create over time a cone shaped hole that leaks fluid and loss pressure)
Thank you very much for all amazing information and sharing your knowledge. This is awesome! I Pin your comment at the top - hope it helps people who work on their H3.
Did you have take off the transmission to replace that valve?
That fluid looked brand new
And I am glad it did. I like to change my trans fluid every 30k miles
Thank you for the great videos!!!
Thanks for watching!
Very much appreciated. Thank You 😊
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you very much. Your video is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
I still have a hard time to take the filter seal out , thank you for your additional help ...
Awesome channel thank you
Excellent video! Thank you
Glad it helped!
Good video 👍I think the Humvee H1 is similar ... . Best wishes from Germany
NICE !! THANK YOU
Great video. Thx
Excellent 👌 thanks
Thanks man!
Excellent tutorial
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done.
Great video excellent
Thank you for this
My pleasure!
Hey thanks for the video, I wanted to change the trans oil on my Yukon but I don't trust my torque wrench is there one you recommend?
I want to make sure it's as close as possible to torq spec, I would go with certified ACDelco: amzn.to/3c1BKcI, cheaper one: amzn.to/3fUSEe6
Would this be the same for a 1984 s10
Hello friend, excellent video. I have a 2001 2wd blazer and in autozone they ask me if it is from a deep pan or not ... since the transmission oil filter is different, could you help me?
I would love to help you - but not sure about 2001 blazer
What truck you working on? I have that transmission on my 07 chevy colorado the oil pan has rusted and is liking . Auto parts can't find the right pan for it
It's H3, but has the same transmission as yours. Check rockauto.com for parts - that's where I get mine
@@NewRoad tanks a lot I'll check rock auto
Epa is gonna hate me for saying this, but for cleaning up the trans pan, you can use a little bit of gasoline to break everything down and help just clean it off, prob should let it dry off before use agsin but yea
MY TRUCK IS SILVERADO 2004, SINGLE CAB 4X4 WHAT TRANSMISSION HAVE..?
Not sure if you still have this hummer but I have a question did you ever have an issue with it going into limp mode? I am getting a code for p0717 turbin input sensor just not sure that's the real issue with it
Still have it, but never had similar issue. There few vids on youtube what it might be
Hı I couldn't find video about 2013 chevy volt transmisson filter replacement...where can I find ?
Sorry, not sure
how did you get the bolts at the back mine are un accessible?
Did you disconnect drive shaft like in a video?
Does this work on a 2014 Denali 1500?
I believe it is - looks like some were built with 4L60E and later with 6L80 transmissions
Is there a kit to install a drain plug?
I heard some people find the way, but I never looked at it to be honest
Skipped the hardest part! Removing that crazy filter seal
Hmm, I didn't have much problem with that seal
Im about to change my fluid how much fluid do I need to put in I have a 2006 hummer h3 and I got everything I have a gallon of fluid how much fluid I need to put in???
Have 5qt / 5L ready, but it depends how much you gonna drain
OK not going into details but I over filled my transmission so I shouldn't have to completely unbolt it right to just drain some out.
Make sure you use Hot Check procedure to properly measure the level - it is in the video at 8:24 mark. If you overfilled - you can buy a small pump and pump it through fill tube. I used this one to pump some in my mercedes when I overfilled engine oil: amzn.to/3BikThc
@@NewRoad I have a 93 trans am I tried sticking a pump tube down but it hits a block and I can't go deeper
Does the filter seal came with the filter?
Yes, it did
No way you can fill the trans fluid where the dipstick goes??? It looks like my pan is leaking and was gonna change it tomorrow on my 2003 s10 but have been seeing videos of people pumping the fluid into the trans under the truck?
Just follow the video and you'll be fine
This step or flat filter for the tranny
Replace transmission, GMC trucks
🤔 (thinking ...)
You spelled DODGE wrong.. lol
Dude uses a kitchen knife to help remove the filter seal.
😊
Thank you for watching, hope you learned something new 😁
