lol, that's my problem too.. Sometimes a deal just isn't worth it from a financial perspective, but then I look at the cards as a collector and I'm like "ok, I'm in"... I have a difficult time separating the business aspect of the hobby from the pleasure, and it's gotten me into quite a bit of trouble throughout the years.

You estimated a 70-90k yield. In the end you even got lucky with the high end 90k. You should have stuck to your initial max price to pay. On the other hand, aside from the relatively low reward on 6 weeks of work, you did manage to also build your name, grow your eBay store and increase your client base.

My experience is booth sales of any kind tend to be more about community than making any money for booth sellers. While you think you didn't pay "ebay" fees because the seller, thus you the buyer too, have to pay for booth fees. Not just booth itself- travel, hotel(OMG how expensive these are at any event), car rental, and time all for you AND the seller. Where these start to make sense are massive quantity stuff that can be obtained and offloaded to a small handful of buyers on a regular basis. This is just my experience in doing Gemstone shows like in Tucson for many years. We end up making connections and going straight to the mine to buy which is always better than going to a show. We always agree the people making the most money are always the shows/hotels/city while we barely make much from the show.

  • @christopherdunham1198

Let’s everyone know that sometimes buyers take a beating, which I would put this deal in. If your tying up your money for 8 months to make 5% (or 6 weeks of work) only the top dealers with fat bankrolls can sustain this. I think those kind of collectors would have passed on the collection as most are not willing to pay more than 50% (or less) value.

I enjoyed how you were transparent and broke dow the final numbers. But man ouch on the profit! 6 weeks of work with your profit is barely 17.5 hour!

Impressive that you made about what you had forecasted before you made the deal. Great story.

I absolutely love hearing these stories. Wow, you live in Europe now? I just assumed you lived in the states.
Thanks for making these videos. So interesting to hear both the hits and misses.

Love the insight. Thank you. Not always a win and really appreciate that you show the skeletons in your card closet. Graduate level trading card course.

Actually ended up selling the display cases to another dealer since we had no good way to transport them home.

Sounds like Anthony got the better end of the deal for sure. I love hearing these stories and seeing the numbers at the end!

I would have told Anthony to complete the deal over dinner with his wife and, with all parties involved. I would never take a chance with that many people at the nationals, it would have been at a comfortable atmosphere without having to worry over the transaction. Even if you partner would have showed up on time at 4pm it could have been risky for Anthony sake because that much money, "at the booth" would have been a nightmare? I'm glad you were able to make a small profit but, even for myself, I would have been splitting hairs, for sure less than 10K profit would have pushed me beyond the edge, at least it was not a loss.

I would love to see you add a “current sales estimate” to these collection deals, going off of recent sales…….as long as it wouldn’t make you too sad. 😂

i asked him for the same thing he did that for a bunch of Trout rookies and it was just too depressing but he always says its about enjoying the cards and the deal not just profit

Awesome content Chris. I just saw something on ebay that to me just can't be right. It shows on July 22nd, a 1996 97 PSA 9 Topps Chrome Kobe Bryant rookie sold for just $390!!! Talk about bargain of the century if true. Just thought I would see if that were a candidate for your weekly rollers segment.
