    I mean, if the same card can grade a 2 for one psa grader and a 7 for another, you know the whole grading industry is a scam.

    As a newbie to card collecting and am learning about PSA grading criteria, this is educational.
    So in addition to PSA looking at centering, corners, surface condition and overall measurement, don't let your cards smell like pot. OK good tip. Thanks for sharing.

    I remember that Koufax card story very well. I just checked my original comment, which was: "The identical card being graded a 2 and then a 7 by the same company just shows how ridiculous card grading can be." That comment got 116 likes and 21 replies. But now that you've told a couple of other stories, it's obvious that your hippie guy was supplying one of PSA's graders with way too much of what was in his bag!

    Love the stories, Chris.
    Your "illicit drug deal" reminded me of a similar scenario I was involved in a couple years ago. A potential buyer and I had arranged to meet at a bar where we had dinner and drinks before talking business. We'd selected the place because it was out of the way and wouldn't be very busy. I'd brought my cards in a black briefcase and had them sitting on the table so the buyer could look through them while we talked. We took too long and the bar closed before we could complete the deal. We moved to the parking lot, where I popped my trunk so we'd have a place to set the cards down and finish negotiating. It was a larger deal and the buyer brought several thousand dollars in cash. We shook on it and, as the buyer handed me the money, we noticed a police car slowly cruising by on the adjacent street. We couldn't see the officer's face, but it was clear he'd taken interest in what two grown men could be exchanging cash over at midnight in a bar parking lot. I was so startled by how ridiculously shady the whole scene looked, that I smiled and waved at the officer. He stopped the car, seemed to consider the situation for a few seconds, and drove on.
    I remain friends with the buyer to this day, and we've both agreed to conduct any future deals in less suspicious settings.

    Good stories Chris. Like the hippie one the best. PSA is wildly inconsistent. Grading companies across the board are vastly overpriced IMO. Standard no rush grading service shouldn't cost more than $10 a card. Just plain greed.

    • @gabriels1163
      @gabriels1163 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I worked at a grading company for a while. We could technically do $10 a grade, but it was only worth it for bulk orders of easy stuff. If you have to spend a bunch of time figuring out the info for the label, or extra time grading because the condition isnt perfect, then there was no profit. About $15 per grade is where you need to be to make a profit and still do things legit and properly. PSA is a different story though. They hire college kids and pay them very little. They also dont grade cards like other companies, they just look at it and guess a grade so they can get through them way quicker. They also use the cheapest cases on the market. And they charge massively more than other companies.

    I'm a charter member of the hate for PSA club 😆. Sorry but after they charged me for a card they didn't grade, they have had my ire. IF I ever grade again, itll likely be with SGC. Great customer service I've heard plus no chance of POP report manipulation.

  • @dextermorgan8824
    @dextermorgan8824 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    PSA did the same thing to me and another TH-cam content creator. He had a flawless 2022 chrome card and it came back a 2. His card was easily a 9. Needless to say he was dumbfounded.
    In my case I received a 2 on a vintage basketball card and resubmitted and got a 7. This tells me that some PSA graders aren't even looking at the cards and are just passing them through the system to meet their daily quota. Like any other job, I'm sure the work is monotonous and employees take shortcuts to get through their shift. I would imagine some of them get a kick out of knowing how shocked the customer will be when he gets his cards back after waiting so long. PSA has no incentive to stop this bad behavior because they make money on the initial submission and on the re-submission. They're all laughing all the way to the bank. Eventually there will be a whistleblower and hopefully a class action to lawsuit to make a lot of us collectors whole. Sorry for the rant Chris.

    Had a similar grading experience with bgs about 4 years ago. Sent them in 4 Giannis prizm rookies. 2 came back 9.5 and 1 came back pristine 10. The other for some reason came back a 6! and it looked just as good as all the other ones. \
    So i cracked it out looked it over again and it was flawless. Decided to send it back to bgs about 2 months later with a few other cards and when it came back again it graded a bgs 10 pristine.
    makes no sense i swear sometimes i think the grading companies do that on purpose cause they know you will resend it in then they will get you for another grading fee.

    One of my biggest beefs against card graders is that they never give you any indication as to why an item is graded at such and such a level. At least with comic books you are usually provided with grader notes explaining the reasons for their decision. It's long since overdue that card grading companies begin doing the same.

    The 1955 Koufax is similar to what I'm dealing with right now. Sent in a 1955 Jackie Robinson that probably should have been a 7 but they called it trimmed even though it measured up exactly AND they creased it. I had to send it back to them for them to review and hopefully cover me somehow. They've had it for review for almost 2 months with no word yet if they are going to acknowledge that they damaged it.

When I went through the binder, mostly minor Hall of Famers and commons in G-VG. I asked him how much for all and he pulled out a sheet of paper as his son had figured the value and he said "2.8 million in cards and all he wanted was 2.3 million". His son had figured out most likely NM or graded prices and when I explained to him what was happening, he got angry and asked me to leave.

    I've only had one seller get angry on me... we had agreed on prices and meetup details and everything... then he reaches out and starts accusing me of trying to rip him off based on the typical flawed reasoning that if a high-graded version of card X sells for $Y then you should be offering me $Y minus $10 or something because my card is perfect, blah, blah... All of my covid card purchases were in parking lots and probably looked like drug deals... even the ones where the sellers insisted on meeting at police stations... The only two times that I have cracked and resubbed to PSA the grades went from 6 to 9... not particularly encouraging endorsement of 'standards', y'know?..

    Getting a 5 grade bump on a regrade makes me wonder what's the biggest loss you have had on a regrade? It can't be more than 1 or 2 grades, I hope.

      I dont remember all of them but I recently had a 2-grade loss, from an 8 to a 6 on a modern card.

    Glad you didn’t get busted for a perceived drug deal.

    "Parking lot in a mall" conjures images of the movie Fargo. Chris comes across as the adult in all these deals 🤣"Look, I'm just trying to buy baseball cards here."

    Psa grading the same card a 2, then a 7 just shows how stupid grading is, I got multiple 9's that's should be 10's,

    2? It Should be the same....right? or rejected? I think (PSA) got ahold of your drugs...

    "Avoid suspicion by doing the obvious." If you were doing a drug deal your cohort had everything setup perfectly in that anyone driving by would have said, "gee, that looks like a drug deal but no drug dealer would be that obvious!" Police bust averted.

    Your 3rd story is why I will never grade cards to try to resell or my pc. Total proof it’s subjective or depends on the person that day grading the card. There’s no science or absolute standard to grading. Until it’s done by AI and there’s zero human element involved grading in my opinion is a waste. I feel like you would be a better grader than some of the people who work for Psa or SGC.

      This would be a good application of AI, but it's going to need a company that's not PSA to do it (they won't pull their own pants down).

    Have you considered sending bribes to PSA to get better grades?
