TH-cam has proven to be more educational than most books on animals. Most books claim birds of prey kill their victims by crushing them with their talons, but almost every video I see shows the prey being eaten alive by eagles and hawks. Nature can be so cruel, yet fascinating
You find that fascinating? All I see, is evolution taking its sweet as time.
Seems to me like they start the fight with their talons & finish it with their beak.
In this case, with the prey being so utterly defenseless, the talons weren't needed.

It wasn't being eaten alive.. the Eagle was removing the down feathers before tearing it apart, at the end of the video. Also the chick was clearly dead at the end, due to shock and suffocation, from the Eagle crushing it to death.
No, Birds usually don't kill anything before eating it. They don't even try. They just use their weight to keep them from escaping before just starting to eat.

Hair yes fingernails no, you can technically remove feathers without blood and relatively painless. Feathers also naturally shed. Same as hair.
The baby geese here doesn't have feathers yet, so its fur or hair. And pulling out hair forcefully is not painless.

@@GeneralBuckNaked I saw a stork nest cam on YT where the parent brought its chick a live mole, and the baby stork swallowed it whole (as most birds do). well the mole cut up the storklet's innards and you saw the thing writhing for awhile in the nest before it succumbed to its injuries (mole died inside too). that's not an issue for raptors who pick at their kill. but dayum. it's a good reason to kill it before it goes in yer belly/gullet, eh?

It's magnificent how eagles build their large nest. It's a little off topic, but I find it amazing.

In mother nature I believe lions are one of the few who have mercy upon their prey. They make sure it's dead before eating the potential prey by suffocating it (hold on the neck) I'd rather die by suffocation than to be eaten alive, I would assume much more painful.

You must not have seen the plethora of TH-cam videos that show otherwise.
Lions, especially when converging on large prey like buffalo, don't always concern themselves with killing their prey before they eat, especially when most of the pride is present. They don't bother killing the creature, if the poor thing is unable to run away or put up a fight.
Unless you have thick skin like an elephant (even a baby elephant) to witch the lions will have to eat it alive.
