The monk was Bodhidharma, used to be a Indian prince so he was a warrior. He came to Shaolin temple to teach Buddhism, he also taught Indian Kung Fu for healthy purpose. That is why the Shaolin Kung Fu is mainly for defense, not to harm people.
This awsome show is called "The Great Shaolin 2015" (original release year) aka "Shaolin Nirvana" (2016) aka "Seeking Nirvana at Shaolin" (2016) aka "Shaolin Wendao" (2017). The elder Zheng Xing (fighting monk) is played by Min Guo Hui.

yeah back in the day ( about 200 years ago) fighting sometimes lead to death. I'm waiting for mma fighters to have to fight like that, you know , anything goes and I mean anything. See how they do coming in low exposing their spines like they do. Wonder if they'll be any good paralyzed.
