@@kbbeers4274Correct. Cass Elliott died of a heart attack in the Mayfair flat owned by Harry Nilsson. Four years later Keith Moon asked Nilsson to loan the flat to him. Nilsson at first refused, believing the flat was cursed but relented after Pete Townsend persuaded him lightening doesn't strike twice. Unfortunately Pete was proven wrong - Keith died there too. Nilsson quickly sold the flat - to Townsend!!

Seton Hill Studios: Janis Joplin was a student at the University of Texas, and was very disliked by the other students. She was voted as “Ugliest Man on Campus”, at a charity fundraiser event. She was considered strange and weird. Just goes to show you how quick things changed from what was popular being clean cut and tidy, to hippies growing long hair, beards and dressing like they did, to become popular. I’m from Austin and saw it first hand.

Janis Joplin was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.

FYI - Mama Cass did a lot for musicians - Echoes in the canyon is a cool documentary about Topanga Canyon scene with Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash etc etc.

First off... Love you and your reactions !! as a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother
and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the second day (saturday)
of Monterey, to rave reviews. For some reason, D.A. Pennebacker, the cinematographer, did not record that performance,
so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips.
"half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot
was featured, watching Lanis in this recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain"
again, to be filmed. Her backing group feared Janis would be signed leaving them to fend for themselves.
The promoters also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women
was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a
contract, and she signed with Clive Davis ( who appears in this video, peering from behind some plants just offstage)
from Colombia Records, contingent that her band be signed with her.
The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!
Saturday- the show line-up, featured many SF groups, Canned Heat, the Byrds, Paul Butterfield, the Electric Flag and more!!!!
The first show was Friday evening with the Association.

"Mercedes Benz" by Janis is a short, but powerful and funny song and unlike most (if not all) of her songs, it is NOT about a broken hearted failed relationship.

That lady is the stunning Cass Elliott. Please don’t call her Mama Cass. She hated being coined as such rather than the talented individual she was.
