Mama Cass Elliot's reaction is so good. She recognized a true talent being introduced to the world. This was at the Monterey Pop Festival and I lived in Monterey for a decade. Every time I drove by the Monterey County Fairgrounds I'd wonder what it must have been like back in 1967 when it was going on and wishing I had a time machine.

Back in the wonderfully tarnished era of raw emotional music talent when concerts weren't overly rehearsed with every move practiced and choreographed right down to hair flips and fake smiles. Just go on stage, live in the moment, and let the music possess you. I would take back row tickets to this concert a thousand times over rather than the best front row seats at any auto-tuned fluff-pop concert these days!

First off... Love you and your reactions !! As a side note. Janis Joplin and Big Brother
and the Holding Company (relative "Unknowns" from San Francisco) played the first day
of Monterey. The cinematographer, D.A. Pennebacker, was late to arrive and the first day was
not recorded on film, so the promoters (this year the promoters were John and Michelle Phillips.
"half" of the very popular group, "The Mama's and the Papa's". (That's why "Mama" Cass Elliot
was featured in the recording) invited Janis back on the last day to perform "Ball & Chain"
again, to be filmed. They also informed a bunch of "record labels", that this sensational women
was going to perform again on the last day, so about 8 record companies offered her a
contract, and she signed with Clive Davis from Colombia Records.
The rest, as they say... "Is history" !!

I love the end, when she skips off stage.

Consider also her recording of "Farewell Song" on the album, "Live at Winterland '68" by Big Brother and the holding company featuring Janis Joplin. (Audio only).

Note on another clip you see peter Tork from the Monkees watching Janis. They were all so blown away.

To paraphrase a quote from Tina Turner in "Proud Mary", Janis Joplin doesn't do anything nice and easy. She does it nice and rough! Janis never did anything part way and all her songs have the same raw energy and soulful pain that she displayed here. And as others have said, that was Mama Cass sitting in the front row, a successful professional singer with the Mamas and the Papas that had her mind blown by Janis. You should check out some of her other songs like Cry Baby, Piece of My Heart, and maybe even Summertime, where she brings her unique interpretation to a Cole Porter classic. So sad she joined the "27 Club" and we lost her great talent so soon.

Right time and right place. In today's, Auto-tuned pitch corrected world, she would never have stood a chance.
And apparntly self confidence on stage was not much of an issue.

Mama Cass. Her reaction. Two of my favorites. If Karen Carpenter were there it would be Tri-perfect.

This must have been the house band because the blond guitarist was Allen Collins who played later with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
