When you have a music icon like Mama Cass mesmerized to where she is sitting there with her mouth open, you really have something. This was a literal jaw dropping performance. Yes, that is Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas they showed. Members of her group were among the prime organizers of the Monterey Pop Festival
Most of today’s musicians, singers, music execs and fans would have never heard of Mana Cass .........legendary and iconic once, but now forgotten...... although I still own and play a Mamas n Papas CD as well as a Platters compilation...... but not often.
Also in the audience (seen at the end of the clip wearing a white tennis sweater rather than his usual suit and tie) was music executive Clive Davis (president of Columbia Records at the time), who gave her a record contract after seeing this performance.
The woman with her mouth hanging open was Cass Elliott of The Mammas and the Poppas. She was a talented singer in her own right, and she helped organize this festival.
I am 70 years old I have never heard anybody sing the blues with that passion, she never funded love I hope she is feeling the love of her old and new fans now ❤
Janis put every ounce of her body and soul into every song she sang. She did not sing the blues she was the blues. There will never be another “Pearl”.
Big Mama Thornton wrote and first recorded Ball and Chain. Her version is on youtube if you want to compare. Big Mama also was the first to record Hound Dog (it was written specially for her), which later became a hit for Elvis. Janis has a good number of songs that fall into the "as good as it gets" category.

1967 Janis Joplin didn't have a recording contract until this performance. She was one of a kind. This festival introduced Hendrix, Otis Redding, Canned Heat and the Electric Flag to the masses.
Singing like Janis did must take an emotional toll on her, she sings her heart through her vocals in every song. She isn't just excellent, she is superb! Thank you Janis Joplin
The original writer of the song was the great Big Mama Thornton. Janis asked Ms Thornton if she could record it, and she made sure she got every cent coming to her in royalties. They had love and respect for each other
I am 70, an age where I am being overcome with nostalgia for the music I grew up with. Your videos are great, reminding me of the times we sat and listened to the records and our imaginations reached the heights.
Ball and Chain was written and I believe recorded as well by American Blues singer Big Mama Thornton, one of Janis's great influences! You are so right when you said she feels her music. Janis always gave everything she had and left it all on the stage. The camera man would keep looking at her legs, the same thing they did and criticized Elvis for! The media and press were not good to her. They would talk negative about her looks, since they were the so called experts ☠but it took a toll. This was the first introduction to the public, her first outdoor concert stage! She killed it! Janis was extraordinary. There was no one like her then and now!!
I'm so impressed to see you listening to Janis Joplin 😊. Please could I ask you to listen to her singing "Cry Baby" Live. As well as Joe Cocker at Woodstock "With a little help from my friends" after that??
"Mama" Cass Elliot of The Mamas And The Papas, and a successful solo artist was obviously surprised and blown away by this performance. Janis truly stole the show at Monterey. She made quite the impression on other famous artists at the festival as well at the audience. This was a festival where artists were making their best efforts to impress the world, even with a bit of competative spirit to top each other. After all, THEY ALL PLAYED FOR FREE! (including Hendrix and the Who*) Legendary performance were the result. And Janis was right on top of the heap. 🤘😄 *except Ravi Shankar, he was the only artist paid
She and this band, Big Brother and the Holding Company, were known in the San Francisco scene, but largely unknown outside of that at this time. They appeared here a couple of months before their first album was released.
Janis was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Janis Joplin was a one of a kind singer with a unique voice. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs such as "Me & Bobby McGee", "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Summertime", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.
Awesomeness flows through this video....Janis Joplin had such a powerful, passionate and beautiful voice, and it was unfortunate that she died at such an early age. Her legacy will always be her music and presence on every stage she performed on. Even Mama Cass was in awe as she sat in the audience listening to Janis sing Ball and Chain!! Thanks for reaction to this treasure of an artist!! Hope you do more video reactions like this one, I enjoy your reaction videos!!
Janis was truly a unique talent. Her studio albums are full of such a variety of songs that showcase her range vocals and emotion. A live video to check out is "Janis Joplin - Try (Live, 1970) Vintage Janis but with a twist. She starts the song with a story she tells the audience that segues perfectly into the song. You get a real feel for her relaxed personality. A must for Janis fans
My daughter is 20 & although I have raised her on everything, I still send her one song a day to listen to. I refuse to fail as a parent 😂 The last thing I did last night was send her this performance in Monterey. I woke up to Phil & Sam holding down some Janice. Perfect choice y'all!
I get wanting to expose my kid to great(all types of) music, my daughter is 22 & special needs so her musical education is something else. My mother was a bit of a hippie & I remember her making a point to expose me to all types of music & people. I remember mom taking me to tons of concerts all my life, I got to see or at least listen to many different artists which made my musical taste extremely eclectic, especially considering back then people weren’t so hung up on ‘kids’ being in places that they weren’t normally in. I consider myself to be very lucky to have had a mother that felt it was very important for me to be exposed to many different things & people which gave me a greater understanding & acceptance of the world around me.
I grew up in a different time where we had 33, 45, and 78 rpm and if you wanted someone to hear a song you called the radio station and requested it, then called the other person and told them to listen. Even with the lack of sharing technology, my parents raised all of us to appreciate all kinds of music. The local radio had its Classical hour, its Big Band hour, Monday evenings it played the week's Top 40 in order, etc. and the whole family listened to it all. When we kids had money to spend, they let us buy any records we wanted and whoever was first in the living room had control over what got played (as long as nobody was watching TV). I still appreciate all types of music thanks to them.
@hectorsmommy1717 My Grandfather who raised me was a Big Band Leader in the 50s, so I know exactly what that is! My music education started from there & he stuck with me through the 90's - bless his ears 😂 Loved what you shared - sounds like we were both lucky to hear it all.
@@jennhurl My parents were both young adults during WW2 (Dad served from late 1940 thru VE Day and Mom was in college and started teaching in 43) so they lived during the height of the big bands and that remained their favorite music all of their lives, although Mom branched out and enjoyed a lot of pop. Their openness and accepting that times and music change really helped. Growing up in the 60's and 70's was great too because the top 40 included pop, rock, R&B, country, and even standards. Radio wasn't corporatized where each station had to stick to a genre. It was a good time to grow up.
This was the first time Janis performed on a big stage like this. Most people had never heard her before or heard anything like this. The female artists of the day were sweet sounding folk singers. Thus the reaction. This performance really launched her career.
This live performance at the Monterey Pop Festival is stunning. She did a studio recording of it as well, on Big Brother & The Holding Company's album Cheap Thrills, released in August 1968, about a year after Monterey Pop.
*Janis and Jimmy Hendrix* only two singers brought back on stage for second performance due to: - Janis originally refused to sign waver for *Festival Movie Rights* without compensation - Jimmy's first performance hadn't filmed due to *Camera Glitches* Both of these events Rocketed them to *Iconic Stature*
Janis was a TRUE blues singer. She sang from a place of very deep hurt and pain and bled it out in every performance. Also the band was not supposed to be in the movie but were so well received after they finished they were asked to come back again for the film. Of course they left the stage and started partying and you can tell just watching the bass guitarist they were actually wasted. Th e woman so impressed in the audience is Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas who helped organize this festival. Many modern performers including Stevie Nicks modeled their stage persona from Janis.
Another, often overlooked, member of the 27 club is Alan Wilson of Canned Heat. Their Going Up the Country became the anthem for Woodstock. You should give it a listen.
Cass Elliot was the lady in the crowd but at the very end the guy in the white sweater was the new president of Sony records that signed the group by the end of the day. The performance was an add on that day just for him. The band had performed a full set the day before. The great Big Mama Thornton wrote the song. She also wrote Hound Dog, a song that Elvis covered.
I think she is about 24 here, so 3 more years and heroin takes her, 50% pure heroin which she was not aware of. From what I read on it, heroin is usually only about 3% pure when hits the streets, it was strong enough to stop her heart. She had also been clean for several months and they figured it lowered her bodies resistance and contributed to her death.
Janis Joplin is still amazing all these years later. No woman has come close to the impact on rockysic that she had and continues to define. Her song MOVE OVER hasn't had a lot of play on the 25 reaction channels I am currently following. Perhaps you can break ground here. Enjoy
everyone will point out that it is mama cass in the crowd, mesmorized. but you should also know that she was virtually unknown at the time of this performance. she got a record deal shorty thereafter. one of the best of the era.
On the Tom Jones Show performances if you didn’t watch her performance of Little Girl Blue, you really need to watch it. She was clean from using at that time and well it was Janis at their best.
This is the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. It was at this concert that she was first signed to a record deal. Clive Davis signed her after her performance. This song "Ball and Chain" was written by and first recorded by Big Mama Thornton who was one of Janis' influences. Both recordings of this song, One by Janis and the other by Big Mama were released in 1968. That lady in the audience who you were talking about is Mama Cass Eliot of the Mama's and Papa's and a wonderful singer in her right. Janis sipped Southern Comfort when on stage. By the way, this would have been an outstanding concert as the acts included Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Mama's and Papa's, The Who, The Byrds, and Simon and Garfunkel.
Tell me she is not feeling this song, I mean when she sings she is pouring her entire heart out she sings with such emotion! Janis Joplin is my all-time favorite female singer ever and this is a huge rabbit hole to go down. Nothing like seeing the great mama Cass Elliot from the mamas and the Papas sitting there with none other than Jimi Hendrix, who is just off camera and both of them were completely mesmerized by her voice for performance just everything! She sings with a lot of soul, a lot of soul!
Yeah most reactionary sites don't even realize thats cass Elliot watching in awe. Sometimes I feel like "do you people do even a little research before you decide to react to these classic performances?
The amazed lady in the audience was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas. Comment on her singing California Dreaming. Despite her short life, Janis’ dedicated fans numbered in the millions.
monterey pop festival, she had performed it the night b4 and everyone was so captivated she was asked to do it again in daytime, up until then she was not wellknown. and totally mesmerized momma cass .
Both Janis Joplin and Mama Cass Elliot, the woman with the sunglasses admiring her, would die far too young. Janis died in 1970, age 27, and Cass died in 1974, age 32.
Janis changed the face of Female singers way of presentation in he 60's. The woman in the audience was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas. They were the epitome of "The California Sound" Clean sining tight harmonies and good feelings. What a contrast!
As others have mentioned here, Cass Elliot from "The Mamas and the Papas" was the woman mesmerised in the audience. She helped assemble the artists for this festival. At that time, she was (arguably) THE premier female vocalist in the world. She sat through, and watched her crown disappear. At that very moment, she became the second best female artist around. At the end, all she could do was say "WOW!".
Janis could out-party most of the rock star guys of the day. She could down a bottle of Southern Comfort whiskey like nobody's business. Oh, she could sing a bit, too!!
That was Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas in the audience. The writer of Ball and Chain was Big Mama Thornton. Edit; LOL yes she was unknown and you saw the reaction of Mama Cass. .... Mamas and the Papas... California Dreamin
Ball & Chain ... Mama Cass in the audience. This was Janis Joplin's breakout performance. Her #1 hit was ... Janis Joplin - Me And Bobby McGee (Audio) ... Best version is the studio. It wasn't released until after her death. After all these decades I never knew that there was a live version but I stick with the studio. There is however a good live version of Mercedes Benz from this same album.
Janis, along with Aretha Franklin, is one of the GOATs Imo. Y'all should react to some of Aretha s music. Her songs Think, Chain of Fools, and Respect would be some great choices if you haven't heard them.
I was at the Monterey Pop Festival for all 3 days: June 16, 17 & 18 in Monterey, California. My mother was actually the one who got to see the concert, she was 8 months pregnant with me. She was probably one of few people there who wasn’t stoned or tripping on acid because she refused to drink or take any drugs when she was pregnant, so she remembers all 3 days vividly.
There is a full length version of this song from Monterey Pop 1967. It gives a better insight and feeling. The video here has been chopped for the TV and film. Check it out. To hear the whole version is mind blowing. Love Janis ❤
The woman in the audience was Mama Cass from Mama and the Papa's. A legend, right there.. being absolutely amazed at another legend. They both died so young... makes my heart hurt, still. Only the good die young.. ;*
I am pretty sure this is at the Monterrey Pop Festival. How can someone be a kid starting out singing to becoming a force of nature that Janis became. It's a transformation most of us haven't completed.
The woman you referred to was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas, a seminal 60s group who actually promoted the Monterrey Pop Festival where this song was performed.

Absolutely on point! Love it when folks ask,”who’s the lady in the audience?”. This is how legends are shared!!
Los Angeles and San Francisco had separate music scenes so that was the first time a lot of the bands had seen each other perform.

Lovin Cass Elliot sitting out there in the audience taking in Janis's performance.
Janis has a special place in my heart. Rest in peace sweet girl. ❤🙏🌷
The woman with her mouth hanging open was Cass Elliott of The Mammas and the Poppas.

I recommend Me and Bobby McGee it's amazing
And yes its a cover of big Mama Thornton's Ball and chain.
Yeah most reactionary sites don't even realize thats cass Elliot watching in awe. Sometimes I feel like "do you people do even a little research before you decide to react to these classic performances?
10:34 That lady in the crowd with sunglasses is a singer from the group the Mamas and Pappas. It's Cass Elliot, aka Mama Cass. o
The amazed lady in the audience was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas. Comment on her singing California Dreaming. Despite her short life, Janis’ dedicated fans numbered in the millions.
Piece of My Heart was also a cover originally done by Aretha Franklin's sister Erma
Time for Kozmic Blues by Janis!
monterey pop festival, she had performed it the night b4 and everyone was so captivated she was asked to do it again in daytime, up until then she was not wellknown. and totally mesmerized momma cass .
You forgot that Jim Morrison also died at age 27. He's appreciated properly, but not mourned enough. . . . .
That intro sounds better with chemistry...and I don't mean working together. Thanks for another great reaction!
That was Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas in the audience.
The Monterrey Pop Festival in 1967 was wall to wall epic performances.
That woman in the audience is Cass Elliot of the Mams sbd Papas.
In the 60s Janice Joplin was addressed as THE ROSE 🌹
As others have mentioned here, Cass Elliot from "The Mamas and the Papas" was the woman mesmerised in the audience. She helped assemble the artists for this festival. At that time, she was (arguably) THE premier female vocalist in the world. She sat through, and watched her crown disappear. At that very moment, she became the second best female artist around. At the end, all she could do was say "WOW!".
Janis could out-party most of the rock star guys of the day. She could down a bottle of Southern Comfort whiskey like nobody's business. Oh, she could sing a bit, too!!
And how tragic that she felt the need to. It speaks of great Depression and loneliness, and was the cause of her death. Tragic.
Janis 's greatest hit was probably Me and Bobby McGee which went to number 1 when it was released after her death...R.I.P. Janis...
A great song by Kris Kristofferson. No one else could have sung it the way Janis did.
Yes she's amazing 😂
That was Mama Cass Elliot of the Mamas and the Papas in the audience. The writer of Ball and Chain was Big Mama Thornton. Edit; LOL yes she was unknown and you saw the reaction of Mama Cass. .... Mamas and the Papas... California Dreamin
the cosmic witch ❤
Ball & Chain ... Mama Cass in the audience. This was Janis Joplin's breakout performance. Her #1 hit was ... Janis Joplin - Me And Bobby McGee (Audio) ... Best version is the studio. It wasn't released until after her death. After all these decades I never knew that there was a live version but I stick with the studio. There is however a good live version of Mercedes Benz from this same album.
The lady in the audience was Mama Cass from the Mama's & Papa's. She was witnessing Janis for the 1st time.
Summertime live 1969😮
Janis, along with Aretha Franklin, is one of the GOATs Imo. Y'all should react to some of Aretha s music. Her songs Think, Chain of Fools, and Respect would be some great choices if you haven't heard them.
A Janis Joplin/Robert Plant duo would have been interesting.
That guitarist at beginning was on his way to the moon 😂
I came home on leave and my Mom said she bought tickets to a concert. I kind of went oh geez that won't be fun, The concert was Janis She loved it
There is a full length version of this song from Monterey Pop 1967.
The lady in the audience with the sunglasses on was Mama Cass from The Mamas & the papas
The Summertime video is wonderful.😮
