Yes, Cass Elliott is the woman in the audience.Great performance at the Monterey Festival. Thankfully Clive Davis then CEO of Columbia Records was in the audience. He signed here on the spot to a recording contract. Hats off to the Big Brother Holding Co, making the instruments sound great.
Great reaction to our girl "Pearl"👌. You correctly identified Mama Cass. She was instrumental in organizing this festival and many other groups came to National attention from this weekend. Having grown up in this area, I attended this just 2 years out of high school. Saw Jimi Hendrix set his beloved guitar on fire, really didn't like that but he sure blew us all away when he played! So many talented groups coming up at this time - 1967. I got to see Janis 2 years after this at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. She blew the doors off the place and left us all changed. There is a fun, high energy duet she does with Tom Jones on his TV show called raise your hand! What a dynamic duo‼️💯🎶
The Monterey International Pop Festival was a 3 day music festival held June 16 to 18, 1967 at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in Monterey, California (Northern CA) I was 3 weeks old when this festival happened
I was a young girl when this hit. My elder siblings had her album. I was mesmerized and couldn’t understand why so many of my friend’s parents didn’t like her. My Momma said she thought people didn’t like Janis Joplin the same way people didn’t like Billie Holiday when she was younger. “They bare their soul and it makes some people uncomfortable.”Being raised white in the suburbs, well, that made alot of sense! 😹She then shared Billie Holiday’s music with me and I was a changed person. Music is so transformative and I truly appreciate you two sharing! Bless you! 😽🎶🖤
The Mamas & The Papas were organizers of this festival. Janis actually performed the day before and blew everybody away so they arranged for her to perform the next day too so they could get it on tape. In 1970, my step-sister and I were 15 and lived in Toledo, OH. We took off to go see Janis at the Monterey Pop fest in California. Made it all the way out there in a 53' Plymouth that barely made it up the mountains but Janis died 2 weeks before the festival. We still went to the fest. California had many very strange people in the 60's and 70's. I think we met most of them! lol!
This performance at the Monterey Festival, the prelude to Woodstock, put Janis Joplin on the map. When she was with Big Brother and The Holding Company, she didn't really get a chance to show what she really could do,but, this epic performance was her breakout performance and she blew up and went on her own. She caught Momma Cass' attention
When Janis asked Big Mama Thornton permission to do this song, Big Mama Thornton told her, "I don't care. Just don't f*** it up". She didn't. Check out Janis Joplin's live versions of "Cry Baby", "Summertime", and "Work Me Lord ". They're Amazing. She never did a song the same way twice and always gave it everything she had. She suffered extreme stage fright; but, once she started singing, she became the song. Gone much too soon.
I was there! At the Monterey Pop Festival. Saw Otis Redding backed by the MG’s too as well as several other legends. My ticket cost a whopping seven dollars!
Fun to watch you react to what we have known for decades. Janis could sing. All soul...all the time. lololol. Glad you listened the whole way through. To let it wash over you. Janis was incandescent.
I lived in Monterey for 10 years and every time I drove by the Monterey County Fairgrounds I'd think what it must have been like when the Monterey Pop Festival was going on there. I would love to have had a time machine!
Janis was the best and very unique for those days when women singers were quiet and passive. I appreciate you two because you get it with music. I have seen so many reactions to this video, and few if any knew that the audience woman was the one and only Mama Cass.
Janis is my all time favorite (and was my distant cousin)After that powerhouse performance, she skipped off stage like an 8 year old going to recess at school
Now you know that was Cass and I know you liked her as well. One great one featuring her you didn’t do was ‘Mamas and Papas Words of Love on the Ed Sullivan Show’. That’s her best solo song and this wasn’t just a lip sync this they sang live. Really good you ll like it.
As badass as this performance is...I would give just about anything to see someone react to the studio version off of her "Cheap Thrills" album. It's priceless
My favor people! Love you, I always look for you because you hear the hold song and not to much talking! A new artist out, Leela James, fall for you! Please play it!
These are some talented people also I have a video for you to check out TOM MacDonald the song is called YOU MISSED you have to see it he just put it out the other day
I remember you guys listening to mama cass and you guys said that she was the voice of the Mama's and the Papa's and you guys were spot on ! I love Michelle Phillips but she is not a singer ! Don't attack me people that's my opinion !

Yes that is Mama Cassie, many don't recognize her
Janis use to spend hours in her family home in Port Arthur Texas listening to Bessie Smith records. She credits her style partly to her.

Janis' appearance at the Monterey Festival got her signed. That's what I would call a no-brainer. Cass said it all.
Does anyone sing with more passion and soul than Janis? I think not.
Yes have a listen to Maggie Bell in Stone the Crows
Hi S n Me-eee-ell; Janis was from Port Arthur, Texas, next to my hometown back when . . .

Turn down your mics and control the reverb, it's too hard to listen to your comments when you sound like you're in a cave. 😊
Are you crying man?
