As a kid it struck that perfect balance between having a good level of difficulty with the turns but not being too difficult. What an absolute bop (also shoutout to Toad's Factory bring it back please nintendo thank you)
I've always loved Maple Treeway. Good length and complexity. Good challenges in the form of the twisting start, the huge caterpillars after winding up the branch, and the final net bridge can catch you off guard if you're not paying attention. And the design is so indicative of a crisp autumn day. It's such a treat, visually speaking.

Mario Kart DS and Wii were a huge part of my childhood. I’m excited to see what you thought! Edit: Coconut Mall ranking as high as it did gives me SO much joy! It was my all-time favorite track to run as a kid.
The jailed Thwomp always confused me too. Given that Bowser’s a villain, maybe that Thwomp tried to turn good and Bowser locked him up for turning traitor?
That's pretty much accurate, before MK64 the only other game to feature the 3D thwomps specificly the blue ones was Super Mario 64 in which the thwomps appeared 3 times, twice in whomp's fortress and once at the very top of tick tock clock. The theory goes that the thwomp at the top of the clock litterally helped Mario obtain a power star so that betrayal to Bowser was enough to throw him in jail.

What most people don’t know about why certain tracks are put in certain cups is that it’s based on which cups they came from in their debut games. For example, if a track came from Star Cup or Special Cup, most times it would end up being in the Leaf Cup or Lightning Cup. That’s not always the case however, seeing that SNES Mario Circuit 3 was from its debut game’s Flower Cup.
I think it's funny that the Banana Cup in Mario Kart 8 - the Flower Cup equivalent - doesn't have a single Flower Cup course, but has 2 Special Cup tracks.
Coconut Mall was my absolute favourite as a child, to the point where me and my sister would roleplay shopping on the track XD It's still my favourite to this day, the visuals, the inspired idea, the Miis, the elements such as the cars and escalators, they're all tied together with the hectic music, it's chaotic fun to the max. Rainbow Road (the DEFINITIVE Rainbow Road), Maple Treeway, Koopa Cape (I'm in love with the music that plays when you're underwater) and Moonview Highway are the runners up for me.
The "SHOWTIME" billboard from Bowser's Castle Wii may be a reference to how Bowser says "Showtimeeeee" before every battle in Bowser's Inside Story. (His battle theme in that game is named Showtime too)
My favourite detail about Wii Bowsers Castle is its theme. It is Maple Treeway (which is awesome already), but in darker and slower, I love it! This has so many dark implications, which I never expected Mario Kart to do
@@ballisticboo7808 bowser's castle has now climbed up my personal ranking of mkwii tracks. Also there are burnt up trees outside the front of his castle which even further implies this was built on top of or at least near maple treeway.
Might? Maple Treeway and Coconut Mall are already in the Booster Course Pass. Koopa Cape and DK Summit are in Tour so it's almost a guarantee we'll get them in the next waves. Wii Rainbow Road, we'll have to wait and see.
@@Sceptonic Funnily enough, Tour is set to seemingly get another 5 Wii courses (though Grumble Volcano was in the base game of 8 and could've been scrapped, as the only files tied to it were test ones), and the tracks you mentioned are still going to be the courses we get if datamines and leaks are any indication. DK Summit and Koopa Cape were found in a banner datamined in Wave 1, and the person who's been accurately leaking future waves (including the changes in Wave 3 from the music prefetch leak) has gone on record as saying the remaining track is Wii Rainbow Road. There are also a few objects in Tour's files that are speculated to be for Wii Rainbow Road. It is a shame that 8 Deluxe is going to miss out on the other Wii tracks planned - Dry Dry Ruins was datamined, and the way the game orders its internal course IDs signals that Daisy Circuit is coming, and another Wii track is planned (my money is on Moonview Highway, as it wouldn't require any unique course objects not in Tour's files, whereas Wii Moo Moo Meadows would need the Moo Moos, and Wii Mario Circuit is lame lol - those are the only tracks that can fit the slot because it's sandwiched between Maple Treeway and Mushroom Gorge, incidentally). All those tracks are good
me and my sisters would play coconut mall for hours playing “tag”, we’d just chase each other around the map and through all the little shortcuts and stuff for ages, i remember it being a blast
I'd love to see you do 7 next. Such a brilliant, brilliant selection of returning courses that somehow (criminally) did not make it into wii, as well as brand-new favourites. Good luck making a definitive number one when you have Music Park, Wario Shipyard, Pirahna Plant Slide, Maka Wuhu, Waluigi Pinball, Rainbow Road, and Airship Fortress to contend with!
Busting these videos out at a ridiculous rate, I just finished the Disney rankings lmfao. Great work :) Edit: Schaff having to ask what the Thwomp did to be locked up just reminds me of all the Marty rumors from MK64 lmfao
I had a feeling Coconut Mall would be #1, and honestly, why wouldn't it be? Driving through a shopping mall is such an insane concept for an already insane game series, and it did Not disappoint. Everything about it from the mall's layout, mii drivers, and ESPECIALLY the Music is all Top Tier Game Design. 🏆
As someone who played funky kong/jetsetter, coconut mall was a nightmare, i still have nightmares of getting hit with stuff as the escalators change directions, because you physically couldn’t make it up the stairs afterwards. You had to turn around, go back down and then up the other side.
Want a normal reply? xD I completely agree! Not to mention the fact that the modding community for this game is literally the best thing any fandom has done for their game. Wiimfi and CTGP alone solo anything Nintendo did with the game, and a lot of custom tracks these days play and look better than the original game.
Mario Kart: Double Dash is my absolute favorite entry in the series. I think a lot of it had to do with me teaming up with a friend of mine on it. Being able to ride shotgun was excellent, and the unique character powers really helped it too.
I have never played Double Dash, but I genuinely wish I could. Double Dash courses have some of the most endearing and outstanding visual designs across all Mario Kart games. They're incredibly vibrant, feature trees and other objects with eyes (killer concept), and just feel so distinct from the other instalments.
I grew up with Mario Kart DS, and I will always vibe to Waluigi Pinball. It’s colorful, the pinball dynamic is dodgy but fun, and it has the catchiest music next to Coconut Mall.
The reason I love this game is because of the difficulty progression. You beat Dk summit? well here is Wario's Gold mine Beat Wario's Gold mine? Well beat Maple Treeway Beat Maple Treeway? Now beat Grumble Volcano And then the perfect example of this is Special Cup Dry Dry Ruins Then Moonview Highway Then BOWSERS CASTLE THEN THE HOLY RAINBOW ROAD Brilliant Level Design.
30:38 Oh my God, Night in the Woods. Didn't think I'd ever see this banger of a game in a Schaffrillas video. Also you're right : fall is definitely the best season.
one of the reasons why I love coconut mall so much is because there is one of the best out of bounds glitches in all nintendo games, there are so many places to go, cheer on the other racers with the Miis, and so on.
Ahhh, Mario Kart Wii...The one that made me fall in love with videogames. Those 4-player matches with family and friends were the best thing ever at that age. Really brings me back to simpler times.
as someone who mains koopa and has since childhood, koopas track is my all time favorite. so much nostalgia and i remember getting mad at my brother when he would win, even when i tried my hardest. it's so cute and i felt special playing as koopa in it ❤️
Funky Stadium is my all time favorite battle course. I usually choose that course to just always have fun off the ramps rather than actually battling, lol. With gliding now being a feature, this could add so much more fun to this course if it gets remade for a newer Mario Kart game.
Fun fact about Luigi Circuit, it's layout is basically a carbon copy of a real life racetrack called Monza, a very famous historical racing circuit known for high speeds. It hosts a bunch of Formula One races, and it's a fan favorite in that sport, but it doesn't translate well to Mario Kart at all.
Watching this was a nostalgia trip. Makes me sad that the old Wii I played on as a kid broke and stopped reading disks properly. I'd love to play on these old wii-exclusive racing tracks again. (Rainbow road was my absolute favorite despite it's difficulty, would play on that track over and over and over again for hours if I was given the chance, I couldn't care less that I was plummeting to earth a gazillion times lol)
@@sweetcoco8064 Possibly. I have no idea where that old Wii ended up though, it was for the entire family and it broke when I was a kid. I have no idea what my parents did with it after it broke. I recall the family keeping the games for a while so we could keep playing them on the Wii U, but I think the Wii U also broke eventually and I don’t know what happened to that one either.
I love the shortcut in Daisy Circuit. At about 19:37, just next to the word "time", you can see a doorway with some stairs in it. Drive up them for a massive ramp boost.
I once had a lucid dream that one of those creepy eels on Koopa Cape broke through the glass as I was driving past it, and for years I considered it actually possible for those eels to burst through the underwater tunnel and attack you. And I was also terrified that that imprisoned thwomp would break out and chase me. So much so that I frequently looked behind me with the A button (I think it was the A button) to make sure he was still incarcerated.
19:45 I think exactly the same about N64 Bowser Castle. Such an eerie course, more when you are racing in time trial or you are way ahead of the bots, the course really makes you feel like you are ALONE.
Mario Kart Wii was the first Mario Kart game to come out when I was an adult. At the time, I was trying to do way too much, and I didn't have time to play video games. As a result, it's the first Mario Kart I never played. Mario Kart DS was my most played game, as I had a 3 star rating on everything in that game. It was very interesting to see this game that I missed through your eyes, James. Thanks for that.
I thought James was going to be done for the year after a 2 hour long video about Disney, but he had to swoop in less than a week later with FUNKY KONG BAYBEE this channel is the gift that keeps on giving. more specifically, keeps on giving FUNKY KONG BAYBEEE
As a child I too pondered what inhuman crimes that thwomp in n64 BC must have done. That track was so much scarier in the n64 version. I remember being TERRIFIED of it as a kid to the point where I would dread playing the star cup because i knew id have to play it at the end.
Koopa Cape was my favorite track as a kid. Partly because I loved and mained Koopa Troopa for some reason, but also because I loved the underwater segment and the overall color scheme
When a shopping mall ranks higher than jungles, castles and even a glowing galactic highway, you know that mall was very well designed

I think it's funny that the Banana Cup in Mario Kart 8 - the Flower Cup equivalent - doesn't have a single Flower Cup course, but has 2 Special Cup tracks.
I like to see that as the standards of the retro cups evolving alongside the standards of Mario Kart’s gameplay
I just realized that Coconut mall probably takes place in Florida. You got all the palm trees, sunny skies, horrible drivers, it has everything.
Schaff: Moonview highway is probably not gonna come back
Wave 5: Are you sure about that?
Coconut Mall was my absolute favourite as a child, to the point where me and my sister would roleplay shopping on the track XD
It's still my favourite to this day, the visuals, the inspired idea, the Miis, the elements such as the cars and escalators, they're all tied together with the hectic music, it's chaotic fun to the max.
Rainbow Road (the DEFINITIVE Rainbow Road), Maple Treeway, Koopa Cape (I'm in love with the music that plays when you're underwater) and Moonview Highway are the runners up for me.
Too bad that they ruined it in Mario Kart 8 deluxe
@@emoji3266 I disagree tbh, yeah it's not quite the same essence but it's still an instant classic.
The "SHOWTIME" billboard from Bowser's Castle Wii may be a reference to how Bowser says "Showtimeeeee" before every battle in Bowser's Inside Story. (His battle theme in that game is named Showtime too)
But Mario Kart Wii came out before Inside Story...

It would be

7

64
GBA
SNES

@@reversedizzythebackwardsth7800 Not Mario Kart games. I mean the traditional Mario games (both 2D and 3D).
@@britishguy54dx ohhhhhhh but that’s all the mariokart games
My favourite detail about Wii Bowsers Castle is its theme. It is Maple Treeway (which is awesome already), but in darker and slower, I love it!
This has so many dark implications, which I never expected Mario Kart to do
I like how it's implied that Bowser built his castle over Maple Treeway, the ground outside the castle even looks similar
@@ballisticboo7808 bowser's castle has now climbed up my personal ranking of mkwii tracks. Also there are burnt up trees outside the front of his castle which even further implies this was built on top of or at least near maple treeway.
Videos like this are the perfect reminder that Schaffrillas is the ultimate relatable Gen Z nerd. It’s why he’s one of my absolute favorite TH-camrs!
And that he’s actually funny at times
He used to be funnier but he’s still pretty good these days
Really solid list, honestly. The fact that all five of your “S Tiers” might be in the Booster Course Pass is actually pretty cool.
All those tracks are good
@@PikaPhantomVG we'll see
@@SceptonicYeah. Either way, I think we'll be getting a strong course lineup
@@Sceptoniclmao we got all of them, wii fans ate so well with the bcp

I'd love to see you do 7 next. Such a brilliant, brilliant selection of returning courses that somehow (criminally) did not make it into wii, as well as brand-new favourites.
Good luck making a definitive number one when you have Music Park, Wario Shipyard, Pirahna Plant Slide, Maka Wuhu, Waluigi Pinball, Rainbow Road, and Airship Fortress to contend with!
MK7 honestly has my favorite track selection in the series.
@@joeyjerry1586 I'm not very familiar with the full course selection of anything before wii, so from what I've seen I can only agree with you.
I agree, 7 does have a really good selection of tracks. It also has my third favorite rainbow road, behind Wii and 64.
@@JHawk-nw3ui, wait a minute, you prefer MK64’s rainbow road over MK7? That’s quite the hot take there
@@joeyjerry1586 I meant that 64 has my favorite theme, I said the wrong thing. 7 is higher than 64.
So glad he did a mini ranking of battle mode maps. Funky stadium was my childhood from 6-10
Busting these videos out at a ridiculous rate, I just finished the Disney rankings lmfao. Great work :)
Edit: Schaff having to ask what the Thwomp did to be locked up just reminds me of all the Marty rumors from MK64 lmfao
Agreed
29:06 I'm from the future, and I can happily say that this line aged like fine wine.
Indeed
Schaff coming with the absolute HEAT this Christmas
27:59 Can confirm, it didn't age like milk
Still one of my favorite games of all time. So much nostalgia with this one.
Want a normal reply? xD
I completely agree! Not to mention the fact that the modding community for this game is literally the best thing any fandom has done for their game. Wiimfi and CTGP alone solo anything Nintendo did with the game, and a lot of custom tracks these days play and look better than the original game.
I love how detailed he can go into all these things. Not just this video, but every analysis video
Get well soon Schaff.
3:38 ironic now that a new yoshi map is coming out in booster course 4
Mario Kart: Double Dash is my absolute favorite entry in the series. I think a lot of it had to do with me teaming up with a friend of mine on it. Being able to ride shotgun was excellent, and the unique character powers really helped it too.
And also......
Hi I'm Daisy!!!!
This is probably my most played game of all time, even before playing the custom tracks I never grew tired of it, I'll always love it!
The reason I love this game is because of the difficulty progression.
You beat Dk summit? well here is Wario's Gold mine
Beat Wario's Gold mine? Well beat Maple Treeway
Beat Maple Treeway? Now beat Grumble Volcano
And then the perfect example of this is Special Cup
Dry Dry Ruins
Then Moonview Highway
Then BOWSERS CASTLE
THEN THE HOLY RAINBOW ROAD
Brilliant Level Design.
It paces with difficulty so well❤
I want to see a ranking for every Super course next. I really want to watch Schaff try to come with things to say about all of its courses.
30:38 Oh my God, Night in the Woods. Didn't think I'd ever see this banger of a game in a Schaffrillas video. Also you're right : fall is definitely the best season.
3:40 this didn't age well
26:10 you forgot to mention the more laps you go through, the angrier the mountain becomes, causing more boulders to fall
Him never doing the POW block cancel in any of these clips brings back an odd amount of nostalgia to when I didn't know how to do that
one of the reasons why I love coconut mall so much is because there is one of the best out of bounds glitches in all nintendo games, there are so many places to go, cheer on the other racers with the Miis, and so on.
Ahhh, Mario Kart Wii...The one that made me fall in love with videogames. Those 4-player matches with family and friends were the best thing ever at that age. Really brings me back to simpler times.
23:11 I'm from the future, I have news for you
LETS GO
as someone who mains koopa and has since childhood, koopas track is my all time favorite. so much nostalgia and i remember getting mad at my brother when he would win, even when i tried my hardest. it's so cute and i felt special playing as koopa in it ❤️
Mario Kart Wii is probably my most played game from my childhood. It’s probably been overtaken by recent games, but never the less, I love it.
I played it so much as a kid that the case broke in half from me opening and closing it so often.
28:53 A part of Rainbow Road's theme is also a cheeky reference to Good Egg Galaxy and I _love_ it.
Fun Fact: Not only can you see star bits in Rainbow Road, but the music also has light motif from good egg galaxy
it took me until last night to realize that koopa troopa's shell changes depending what team you're on.
They still all hold a place in my heart.
The original DS version is the one I view most favourable, as it was my first game, but good god if the Wii version doesn’t hit different 😳
Coconut mall is mad dad’s favorite course and he loves watching your videos with me, so it was a fun surprise to see it ranked as number one :)
Dude must be working those toads at toad factory really hard if he keeps making this much amazing content
It’s an absolute travesty that Toads Factory didn’t come back in 8 given the big band jazz style of the whole soundtrack
I loved all the little stories you and your brother made up. Reminded me of playing this game with my brother when I was growing up :)
Every ranking video is always a banger hope he does more of these love this one
Oh my god, thank you for doing this. It makes me unreasonably happy. Mario Kart Wii was my childhood.
You could try finding someone to repair it for you, my guess is that the laser simply stopped working and that is not hard to fix :)
I'm so glad Cooper cape got the recognition it deserves, underrated course and probably not one first you think when U with this game
Thanks for that.
do give mario kart wii a try when possible, it could be worth it
I thought James was going to be done for the year after a 2 hour long video about Disney, but he had to swoop in less than a week later with FUNKY KONG BAYBEE
this channel is the gift that keeps on giving. more specifically, keeps on giving FUNKY KONG BAYBEEE
As a child I too pondered what inhuman crimes that thwomp in n64 BC must have done. That track was so much scarier in the n64 version. I remember being TERRIFIED of it as a kid to the point where I would dread playing the star cup because i knew id have to play it at the end.
You could not have predicted the end of the booster course pack more correctly
Koopa Cape was my favorite track as a kid. Partly because I loved and mained Koopa Troopa for some reason, but also because I loved the underwater segment and the overall color scheme
Everybody's main was Koopa Troopa or Skeletal Koopa Troopa (Dry Bones)
The memes before each track really added flavor. Love it 😂
