My Budget Jeep Wrangler Overland Camping Trailer!
I have built what I consider to be a budget-friendly overlanding and camping trailer over several years. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate that you don't need an expensive trailer for camping or overlanding. I’m so excited to get back into camping and overlanding this fall with my new Jeep Wrangler. Let me know in the comments what you think of my setup!

You make the best jeep videos keep up the good work Oakland California love
Appreciate the kind words! Thanks for following along.
Thank you, you just made my day you gave me so many great ideas to make my off road trailer better with just a few simple add ons , the hot water heater great idea. Thanks again going to subscribe to see your next video.
I showed this to my wife whose never been willing to even consider all the 30K Expedition Trailers I showed her in an attempt to make her happy while camping. But she loved your budget friendly build. And she said - “Honey if you just give me 5K for my dream sewing room I’ll stop complaining about “us” go camping in your Jeep. And we’ll both be happy. You camping & me sewing while monitoring you & the grandkids progress on my iPad with the InReach App!”. Who knew, her idea was much easier than even your budget build. All I had to do was write one check and I was done!
I’m very glad I could help! That sounds like a good trade!
Nice build! I've often wondered why there isn't a hitch on the rear and at least one on each side of some of these homebuilt trailers.. Could use the one on the rear for a hitch mounted picnic table. Could use one hitch on the side for a hitch mounted toilet seat. Also, if I were to build one, I think I'd like to put removable (or foldable) stands at each corner for balance/leveling. All of that may be overkill though
I use weld on trailer jack points on the corners for stabilizing!
I really love this, it was exactly what I was looking for!
Awesome!
Best video yet!!! Loved all the gadgets. Really amazing.
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
What a great build. I am enjoying your channel, thanks for posting.
Thank you Dennis!
That’s darn slick and inventive. Makes a trailer reasonable! Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
This is really cool! I’d rather buy another jeep than buy one of those $30k-$40k trailers 😂
Absolutely!
Love the overland trailer……! Great video
Thanks Mike!
What a great and well thought out setup. All it needs now is some color-matched accents!
Good call!
Cool set up Matt!! Nice video editing :)
Thanks Dawn!
The M416 is a great trailer. I have had mine for well over 10 years and even though it's still on the military wheels and tires, It has served me well. We tent camp in a Kodiak Canvas tent and carry all the camping gear you can imagine (too much actually). Great video, KISS .... keep it simple. The best feature is that you don't have nearly so much to unload when you get home.
I love mine’
@@DIRTROADCRED same here ... and just like the jeeps ... it will probably never be done.
Finally a reasonable trailer.
Exactly!
This will be super helpful info if I ever move out of Florida. Camping here is just asking for an early trip to the afterlife.
They definitely work well!
Great vidéo🍁🤙
Thank you!
Nice set up dawg
Thanks brotha
My wife and I with one German Shepherd use to sleep on a full size air mattress in the back of my JKU, I am 6'1" and fit ok. $30 Walmart air mattress, $40 propane stove, 2 $20 sleeping bags and an awesome dog to stand guard all night. $100 will get a good start at camping.
Great set up!
I've just started watching your channel. I like that you're pretty straight up. I'm fortunate enough to have a 05 TJR and a 22 Gladiator max tow. I think this trailer set up would be cool for my TJ. As far as the RTT, not sure about having to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Yeah the up and down on the ladder at night is interesting !!
Nice set up but but the word has been out on old military trailers, finding a reasonably priced 416 that's not a basket case is damn near impossible.
The market has changed for sure!
I have put off building one myself cause like every build it's to each ones taste but your build economic great budget saver . Thanks for sharing I love it because high end purchase like buying end unit I don't see unnecessary how many times ever get to use just waste of money 💲💲💲
They are really a great way to get out and explore!
Love it, great build bro 😎😎, I fully agree with you about spending rediculous money on something you can build yourself and your way for less money, that's the good thing about being able to THINK outside the box 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣😂, it always amazes me how caught up most are with marketing hype, ESPECIALLY when it comes to running 40s on Dana 44s, what you have done does EXACTLY what it's supposed to.👍👍👍👍
Yup! There’s a ton of really expensive hype out there, I enjoy my trailer for what it is!
I have been shopping for one of those trailers for a few years. Where I live, the average selling price for just that trailer is $3K Canadian/ $2300 USD for something decent. I was lucky enough to pick up a Dog House Trailer with RTT for $2300 this summer. I also bought a shower system like you have. It's a bit of a splurge but I think it will be worth it over time. It is permanently mounted it in a Nanuk case (similar to Pelican but cheaper!) A couple of quick connects for the gas line and water inlet making a quick and easy set up. Just mount the handle it comes with to the outside of the case for hanging it.
Love it!
Did I miss the bathroom? :)
Lol almost everything!
This is literally the exact type of setup I want. I am having a hard time finding a decent trailer like that for a decent price. How did you go about finding that one? I am definitely not spending thousands on one of those ridiculously overpriced "Overlanding" trailers. I currently just sleep in the back of my jeep and am fine with that for now. Just want to get a good trailer for cargo and possibly doing a tent and awning like you did here.
It’s a great budget set up. Found this military trailer on Craigslist. Good luck!
Off topic question. I have yet to see a high velocity yellow Jeep. In the video, yours looks great. Can you please give me a description of the color, is it “flat” yellow….or does it have some sort of metallic in it. Trying to decide what color to order. IM GOING WITH THE EXTREME RECON package. Should I go with stock steel bumpers, or do aftermarket? Same question on running board/step?
It’s a decently bright yellow, no flake, it’s a flat color like the gecko green was. Honestly I would do aftermarket front and rear bumpers and steps, the factory steel bumpers are great if you don’t plan on running a winch, which requires another $300 plate
Some people can afford more that's all there is to it
You're not wrong. There are budget solutions out there
What’s up with the tuner man? Yay or Nay
Review is being shot here soon and will be up shortly !
@@DIRTROADCRED thanks. Also, think you could pop it onto a 4xe or do they have one for it? Thx
Matt, what are your thoughts and experiences regarding JL/JT hinge corrosion? I’m super interested in a Wrangler Xtreme Recon but the hundreds of posts on forums and TH-cam showing galvanic corrosion causing bubbling of the paint on the doors and the the repeat of such issues even after customers have had their Jeep in for warranty paint repair has me rethinking pulling the trigger on a new JL.
I’ve seen them and heard the issues, it’s something that will more than likely be addressed soon, I’ve had it happen on my JK back in the day!
@@DIRTROADCRED I doubt it will be addressed soon as it seems to be going on ever since the JL’s were released and it doesn’t seem like a solution has been made because even new owners are having the same issue. It’s unfortunate.
Is this due to salt back East, as I’ve never seen or heard of this among my friends with Jeep’s out on the dusty plains of ENM & WTX?
Also they all have hand crank windows because why pay for electric as we run doors off so much here. I’ve seen galvanized water pipe corrode when used as an electrical ground. I wonder if Jeep’s with electricity running through their doors with a mix of steel and aluminum are experiencing the same thing?
What happened to the promised review of the Race Chip?
It’s coming , I wanted to drive it for a week before reviewing
@@DIRTROADCRED Thanks, buddy. Great trailer build.
Some are 90,000!!!
Crazy!!!
