So refreshing to see someone talk about “overlanding” and not spend 5 min discussing tactical knives while fully decked out in 5-11 gear. Also, I spent 20 yrs in the military and you nailed the mission planning mindset. Planning to get in is only 1/3 the planning. Ya also gotta get out and ya got get thru an emergency(unexpected weather, gear/vehicle failure, injury/sickness). Nice!
Appreciate you for taking the time to comment! Thank you for your service to our nation as well. Yeah, good prep does most of the heavy lifting but right mindset for when, not if, things so sideways is critical. I'm constantly working on that right mindset thing--always a work in progress. Happy Holidays to you!
Someone I looked up to and idolized and and had a resume that would impress anyone once told me, “The most tactical person ever, is the one you never spotted.”
As someone who's interested in starting with overlanding, this vid is really inspiring. Not busting dreams with "you need a 80k vehicle, and 10k gear!!" Just honest to the point information and advice 🙏
I did a 2 month overlanding trip in 2019 from the east to the Canadian Rockies and Badlands, Glacier, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I did that one with an AWD Lexus RX 350 pulling a little teardrop trailer and could go anywhere I wanted. But when planning a 2 month trip this year to Colorado, Utah and Arizona, there were so many places I wanted to go but couldn't without a legitimate high clearance 4WD vehicle that I bought a 4WD Toyota 4Runner and sold the Lexus and the trailer. I am converting to tent camping (including a collapsible cot because I'm too old to sleep on the ground) and since I'm making the trip on my own and use the 4Runner as my everyday driver, I'm going to keep everything inside the vehicle. No roof rack, external mounts, etc. that I won't need or use 90% of the time, that cost a lot of money, and that will decrease gas mileage and potentially make the inside of the vehicle noisier on the road. Now that I got rid of the trailer and will have everything inside the vehicle, I can go anywhere the vehicle is capable of going instead of having to leave the trailer somewhere and go back and get it. No backtracking. I can travel point to point and if I see somewhere I want to stop to hike or photograph along the way, I don't have to worry about how much room I need to park and maneuver because of a trailer. I pretty much have all my gear at this point and am going to pack everything like I'm leaving to see if I can create enough space to sleep inside the vehicle when I'm only going to be somewhere for a night or two and don't want to set up the tent. I think I should be able to do it. I have several 3 to 5 night camping trips scheduled for close to home ahead of my big trip so I can see if I'm missing anything important, figure out how to pack the vehicle to quickly access the things I use the most, to get quicker at setting up and breaking down a campsite, etc. One place where I've gone against what most people do is in the area of cooking. I am not comfortable carrying a propane tank inside my vehicle and am not going to spend the money required to safely mount one outside the vehicle. I'm going with a one burner induction cooktop that I can power with a Jackery. At its peak setting, the induction cooktop will draw a lot more power than the Jackery can put out on a sustained basis. But I've tested the induction cooktop with the Jackery and it does fine up to medium heat, which is good for 90% of my home cooking - pretty much everything other than searing meat. Induction cooking seems to be pretty common for overlanders in Australia based on videos, but I see very few Americans doing it. I can supplement the induction cooktop by cooking on grills at campsites when fires are allowed. I have a little JetBoil and a couple of small butane canisters like backpackers use so I can quickly make coffee or hot tea without dragging out the portable kitchen and induction cooktop and opening up the back of the vehicle. I've ditched a Yeti cooler for a 45 liter portable refrigerator that has much more effective capacity (since it doesn't have to be 2/3 loaded with ice) and will run off the Jackery,. The Jackery can be recharged via an AC outlet in the vehicle in a couple of hours and it can power the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Thanks for taking the time to make your videos. Yours and others like them have helped me look at different approaches and figure out what gear I need to overland the way I want to do it. If we don't have another Covid outbreak and my health stays good, I plan to spend a couple of months a year taking overlanding trips; it will be 2 season stuff where I can get mostly reasonable temperatures based on where I'm going. I'm not going to hike in 100 degree temperatures and if it's 20 degrees and snowing I'm going to be in a hotel, not a tent. I may do some winter trips where I stay in a centrally located hotel or cabin or two for a month and leave most of the overlanding gear at home. Also, I appreciate your videos on dealing with depression. I went through a very rough 2 year period with debilitating depression, in large part due to health issues, but I have been clear of it for over 10 years now. Keep plugging and ask for help when you need it, and hopefully it will lift for you like it did for me.
Sounds like you have a very well thought out plan for what you want to do! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you were still able to get something out of it even with your experience and thorough planning.

This video makes me so happy. Best “start overlanding” video that has literally ever been created or will ever be created. Ever. Simple, but crazy informative with practical tips and info, and friggin hilarious. And as a many many years overlander and bushcrafter I fully admit that feed container had never occurred to me 🤯

13:00 - Thank you for mentioning training. There are far too many people who buy a first-aid kit(usually the cheapest one they can find), but have no idea how to apply it. You can take a one-day basic first-aid course on a weekend for pretty reasonable prices. You don't need to be a seasoned paramedic(although it doesn't hurt), but taking a wilderness first-aid course is a worthy investment. Really, any time you buy a piece of gear, you should consider the training required to use it. I took a winch and recovery course, and in eight hours, I learned an unbelievable amount of stuff. Training is just as important as gear, and often more so. Remember, a lot of places won't have signal to let you watch a TH-cam tutorial.
Thanks for watching! Don't be intimidated. Just do a short trip nearby and don't go down the gear rabbit hole unless you know you love it. Happy trails!
People overland all over the world in vehicles of all sizes, shapes and number of wheels/tires. Ultimately, what does it matter what your drive as long as you have a good time and you're not harming others. Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Hey man 👋 I just watched your video for the first time and I'm loving it. I've had my Jeep JKU for a few years, and I'm a huge camping fan. Well...overlanding it is! I'm digging your information and I love your sense of humor. THANK YOU!!!
Really, really enjoyed your video. As an older guy who's watched a lot of videos with rigs that have everything it's refreshing to hear your advice about the basics and just getting out there. It can be intimidating to start if you think you need a $150k van or 4x4 with all the gadgets. And pretty funny too. Especially the pack list with "Wife, Dog 1, and Dog 2" at the top. I like your style! Keep up the good work.
Very refreshing to see a video so packed full of information! A lot of channels just dribble on for 10 minutes without saying anything of value!! Great job and well done!!!
There are definite benefits to vans. I can see that having that interior living space where you can stand up is priceless when the weather gets nasty. A pickup with a camper might be a good middle-of-the-road compromise. And no, thank YOU for watching and commenting!
Great advice! I concider myself more than a novice, yet no where near experienced as I desire to be. Your advice is greatly appreciated and you have now a new follower! Thank You!
Great video, so many people already covered what i would say. Your approach is great, and nit being all tactic-bro'd out. In terms of thos fire extinguishers, definitely look up more test videos, sometimes they work and othe times they don't. Could be a good supliment. We carry one if the aerosol cans in the kitchen kit and its always ready to go when cooking and everyone knows where it is. And an normal abc fire extinguisher, kitchen size or a touch larger.
Earned a subscribe harcore with this video. Awesome. We just did our first ground tent, overland trip and my wife loved it. Dont need to be decked out to go have fun in the woods. We also had a racoon in our camp one night. So good trash tips ;)
Nice. 2:30 BINGO! So many people are selling their rooftop tents here in Texas and cant say I have ever seen anyone actually use that ladder on the back of their vehicles. The pose is real. Subbed.
Wow, 2.42 subs in just three months, must be a record. I know how much time is spent in composing an outstanding video like yours....very helpful and impressive. Great advice for beginners and those of us who have done some Overlanding. Thumbs up and new sub. Also you have great presentation skills. Now off to see more of your videos.
Good job . Overlanding is kinda a new term . Lol . I'm 60. So we just called it camping . I have vehical camped from Maine to Alaska. But I am building a 95 ram short bed single cab 4x4 with a campershell for an overland retirement adventure . She's already looking rad , got the big mud tires , chopped fenders and bumpers Bajaj style . I live offgrid near a natinal park and national forest lands. So we get to have fun . Peace.
Thank you for this video! It's super helpful. I just got a 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4x4 and I want to start Overlanding. I'm in college and worried it wouldn't work for me because of the costs but this helped show me that it's possible to do it on a budget. I subscribed as soon as the video was over.
Man, this is a great video. I’m new to overlanding/camping/off-roading so I’ve had a tendency to wanna go overboard with equipment etc. you’re video is practical and knowledgeable. This definitely helps me a lot. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this simple but helpful video. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the gear, and technical details of hitting the road. Looking forward to visiting local trails and campsites to being. Safe travels.
You cover everything that everyone forgets about, all the other over-landing videos I see are always all about showing off how much money they spent on those refrigerators and rooftop tents, you covered everything that should be commonsense, thanks man I appreciate it all that was recommended and made two new things on my check list, that would be specially the soap and the fire extinguisher
I subscribed because of this video, Like the realness (is that a word?) nice to see that my in back tent . In the back of my truck is good enough and i don't need 10,000$ in stuffs to fit the crowd . keep you the good work. now off to get my Vittles vault...
Wow - what an amazing video and I very much love your humor! You spoke like a normal person, not down to someone who just wants to get started. I just started getting interested in overloading for me and my family and you really helped with answering all but one question. The only question I had was how to connect with others on trails or guides.
The overlanding community as a whole is very helpful and friendly overall. Check out some of the online communities like Overland Bound if you want to connect with others in your area. As far as guides, there are a few companies that do guided overland trips but take a look at my other video on how to plan an overlanding adventure th-cam.com/video/IBhZHAc-KK4/w-d-xo.html to help you get started. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Excellent info! Thanks for posting this! I’m new and heading out to the upper peninsula in Michigan and the Dakotas in June in my Nissan Titan Pro 4X. 👍👍👍Looking very forward to this!
This video was super helpful. Alot of common sense/not so common sense things that people typically overlook were covered here, and I think you definitely nailed it. Awesome video look forward for the gear vid !
Glad it was helpful! Gear vid is already up and the Overland Trip Planning 101 vid will be live tomorrow 1/7 at 9am PDT. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey, I use a Zodi Extreme as my hot shower. Water gets hot by placing the entire fire extinguisher looking unit over a fire of the stove. It has colored decals similar to what is used on fish tanks to display temps. It's mechanically pressurized so you can have a pressure shower. Not many overlanders know about this. Such a great device. No complicated set ups from the on demand hot water units.
Oh what the… I seriously haven’t heard of that one and appreciate you taking the time to suggest it. I’ll definitely take a close look at that when I’m planning the next long-ish trip! Thanks for watching and thanks for the recommendation! 😃
For what it's worth, I think in stages depending on circumstances of trip so for my shower: Stage 1: 2liter soda bottle (with shower attachment off Amazon). Works great! Stage 2: Nemo pressure shower (same as zodi but collapsible and cannot be placed over a fire to heat up) Stage 3: zodi extreme. Stage 4: on demand hot shower (which I don't see a need for yet). The geyser sponge system looks intriguing to me however. Happy camping, fellow overlander!
Ok, your videos are awesome, and they are getting better as you go. This is the first one that I watched and got me to like and subscribe. Thanks for speaking on mental health! I’m a vet and fight those same battles. Not sure if you ever sold enclosed utility trailers, but if so, I bought one from you!!! At that time I had a lime green wrangler. Anyway, look forward to more vids. I too live in the Bay Area. Morgan Hill
I've got a 97 4runner that I'm doing a 3 inch lift and tires on right now. I can't wait to just get out there and see what I need as I go. My first trip will probably be a couple beginner trails near Moab or down in southern Utah
I only have actual experience with the one I own so I'm not sure I'm qualified to provide any relevant comparison opinions. I appreciate the video suggestion though!
I'm planning mooving to perth Australia and Ive been literally dozens of videos about off-road and defenetly your videos are in top 3 quality I've seen till now...liked and subscribed Congratulations
Great video! Good basic info with a taste of additional things to add. I enjoy your style of video. Glad the wife and dogs were on the check list... easy to forget those... "Why is it so quiet...?.... Oh SHiiiiiiiiiiiiii. Oh well"... I have not gone yet... but I think I have the itch now!
@@ggg4runner yes sir I'm actually doing Saturday night stealth urban overlanding it sure makes it interesting. I have a 99 Jeep WJ and stay within 1 hour of where I live I make a meal, watch a movie and relax the night away!!!
So glad to have just discovered your channel. I’m planning on starting on easy off roading and just overnight overlanding. I’m also having high anxiety and stress lately and hoping this helps me out. Subbed and also going to look you up on IG.
If you enjoy the great outdoors, I think it'll be good for you. Several studies have shown that nature is therapeutic. I should have that how to plan an overland trip video done by Sat. 1/7/2023 so hopefully that one will be useful to your future adventures. Thank you for watching, commenting and subbing! Happy future-trails to you!
Great channel! I'm new to overlanding, but an experienced hiker and ski tourer....so I am really looking forward to the luxury of cooking great meals in the mountains. BTW...is that a Bouvier I saw at 6:53 and 17:05?!?!
The 91 in SoCal? Unless my rig is sleepwalking or cheating on me, you've mistaken it for a probably much cooler looking truck than mine. But, I appreciate you watching and commenting! Who knows, I might be down that way after new years. 👊 to a fellow 4Runner brother.
awesome video, fun to watch and educational! I am moving from Austin, TX to a small mountain town in New Mexico, which led me to get a used 4WD 4Runner... well, one thing leads to another and now I'm daydreaming about epic overland camping experiences - solo (maybe make some crazy synth videos out in the wilderness), with my daughter, and with friends! This really helps me picture the planning and excitement of getting my new (used) truck out on the trails! So cool
I haven't laughed out loud watching an overlanding vid in a long time...but did during yours! Great information and very well presented! Looking forward to your upcoming Gaia use video!
This activity can seriously throw you down the rabbit hole of gadgets and gear. You definitely hit on some of the most important ones. Maybe do a video on Comms…GMRS. Some friends and I are about to do our 2nd annual Death Valley trip….and there’s always new gear needed.
Yeah, serious rabbit hole if you love new gear/gadgets. I only have working experience with GMRS and MURS as I never got into CB and Ham, so I'm not sure I can offer any real useful knowledge. But, I can certainly bring up what we currently use for GMRS comms in the gear video I'll be doing in the next couple of weeks. I'm sure you already know but a bunch of stuff in Death Valley is still closed, so plan accordingly 😉 Have a great time!

Have you been to USAL? If not check it out. Northern Mendocino. HWY 1.
I started in my 4Runner with a pillow and a blanket , slowly I started to see what I needed and what I didn’t.
Where did you get your mount for your traction boards?

Agreed Mr. Twister. Too many "Tactical" operators who never served.

No body cares if you served. You were probably a cook and think that makes you Rambo. The dude is talking about camping, not going to war.

Great advice for beginners and those of us who have done some Overlanding. Thumbs up and new sub. Also you have great presentation skills. Now off to see more of your videos.
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you for subbing and for taking the time to comment!
Very informative and very naturally entertaining. Thanks from Oz 😊
Thank you for watching!
Peace.
Thanks for watching! All the best to you and your retirement adventure!
New subscriber. Luv your presentation and content. Thanks for your time and sharing. Top man.
Thanks for the sub, watching and commenting 👊
Thank you for this video! It's super helpful. I just got a 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4x4 and I want to start Overlanding. I'm in college and worried it wouldn't work for me because of the costs but this helped show me that it's possible to do it on a budget. I subscribed as soon as the video was over.
Thanks and happy trails!
Man, this is a great video. I’m new to overlanding/camping/off-roading so I’ve had a tendency to wanna go overboard with equipment etc. you’re video is practical and knowledgeable. This definitely helps me a lot. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Learn from my mistakes of falling down the endless gear rabbit hole 😅
Thank you so much for this simple but helpful video. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the gear, and technical details of hitting the road. Looking forward to visiting local trails and campsites to being.
Safe travels.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy trails!
Thanks for watching and commenting! May you have rewarding adventures ahead!
I subscribed because of this video, Like the realness (is that a word?) nice to see that my in back tent . In the back of my truck is good enough and i don't need 10,000$ in stuffs to fit the crowd . keep you the good work. now off to get my Vittles vault...
Thanks for watching and commenting! I have quite a bit of gear now but it grew over time and started off with just the basics. Appreciate you subbing!
Great stuff man!Love the 4 runner and thanks for sharing your knowledge..your video are extremely well done
Much appreciated! Happy trails!
This content is extremely well done. Thank you for creating and sharing this content. Very entertaining AND educational! Subscribed!
Thank you for watching, commenting and subbing!
New watcher. I loved your approach. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great video, just got my first 4 runner in the UK. Very helpfull video on overlanding.
Excellent info! Thanks for posting this! I’m new and heading out to the upper peninsula in Michigan and the Dakotas in June in my Nissan Titan Pro 4X. 👍👍👍Looking very forward to this!
Thanks for watching and hope you have a great adventure!
@@ggg4runner that’s NOT optional! 👌
Your presentation is highly entertaining but is greatly educational and inspiring. On point but hilarious! Thank you for making this!
Thank you for watching and commenting! Happy Holidays.
Dude, that was a good vid! Genuinely enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awesome video sir. I feel good that I’ve done some of these things, these extra tips are a big help. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Nicely done sir, I overland year round and love it. Your expedient conversation is appreciated and yes I subscribed!
Bro! Phenomenal video. Thanks for putting this out. Subbed!
Thanks for the sub!
For what it's worth, I think in stages depending on circumstances of trip so for my shower:
Stage 1: 2liter soda bottle (with shower attachment off Amazon). Works great!
Stage 2: Nemo pressure shower (same as zodi but collapsible and cannot be placed over a fire to heat up)
Stage 3: zodi extreme.
Morgan Hill
Never sold trailers unless I do some crazy sleep walking. 👊🏼 to a fellow South Bay-er.
Thank you for your service to our nation. Happy Holidays!
❤️ this video. Interesting, informative & entertaining. Your Best Practices make too much sense! 👍
Appreciate you watching and commenting!
This is the most practical, realistic overview I've seen! Thanks for the info. :)
Appreciate you watching and commenting!
I've got a 97 4runner that I'm doing a 3 inch lift and tires on right now. I can't wait to just get out there and see what I need as I go. My first trip will probably be a couple beginner trails near Moab or down in southern Utah
Nice! 3rd gen’s the best gen. Happy trails!
This video has been so helpful and has answered so many questions that I didn't know I had. Thank you and keep up the great content.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@ggg4runner have you thought about doing a fridge comparison video??
I only have actual experience with the one I own so I'm not sure I'm qualified to provide any relevant comparison opinions. I appreciate the video suggestion though!
@ggg4runner fair enough. What about why having a fridge is such a "game changer" video. Like why was it worth the investment kind of a deal.
Hmm... that might work yeah
I'm planning mooving to perth Australia and Ive been literally dozens of videos about off-road and defenetly your videos are in top 3 quality I've seen till now...liked and subscribed
Congratulations
Not sure I deserve the praise but I appreciate your kind words! Thanks for subbing!
Glad you liked the video. Just do it!
you are a good dude. i hope 2023 is full of awesome adventures for you!

Great info nice and simple 👍 thank you I just go overnight overlanding mostly.
You’re lucky to have places close enough to you to do one-night trips. Thank you for watching and happy holidays!
@@ggg4runner yes sir I'm actually doing Saturday night stealth urban overlanding it sure makes it interesting. I have a 99 Jeep WJ and stay within 1 hour of where I live I make a meal, watch a movie and relax the night away!!!
Much better than other videos on this topic. Thanks.
Great video for Newbies to overland or dispersed camping. Organized, succinct, and relevant! Subscribed!
Man I just picked up my 3rd gen 4runner and plan to start overlanding and I love all this content. Thanks man 👍
Thanks for watching and happy trails! 3rd gens the best gen!
OMG. LOL. Finally an overlanding video that is also entertaining. You should be a comedian or comedy writer. Thanks for the info.
I appreciate it! Trying to strike a balance between entertaining and informative. Thank for watching and commenting!

Thanks for watching!
Just found your channel and love it. Oh, I'll be a subscriber from here on out great video!
Appreciate you watching, commenting and subbing!
Great channel! I'm new to overlanding, but an experienced hiker and ski tourer....so I am really looking forward to the luxury of cooking great meals in the mountains.
BTW...is that a Bouvier I saw at 6:53 and 17:05?!?!
Thank you for watching and commenting! She’s a Giant Schnauzer. Happy trails!
great job on this video. very informative and well edited
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Saw you on the 91 the other day (white 4th gen 4Runner with a roof top tent)
So cool to see your channel
So cool
Thanks for watching and happy trails!
I haven't laughed out loud watching an overlanding vid in a long time...but did during yours! Great information and very well presented! Looking forward to your upcoming Gaia use video!
Thank you for watching! Can you tell my wife I’m kinda funny for me 🤣 Happy holidays to you!
Nice video brother.
Thanks for watching!
Very entertaining & lots of good info, thank you for this 🤙🏼🙏🏼
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great Video! Thanks s lot!
Just starting and planning to go from Germany to Scandinavia
Sounds like a great journey! Happy trails!
Just found your page, great info.
Thanks for watching!
great channel...glad I found it

Great video! Thank you!
