    Talked to some very helpful tech guys in Germany (the home of Race Chip) and both said that the Race Chip software takes a while when working with the MOPAR ECU to remap the fuel/power curves for the Jeep. It can take several hours -- or "up to 200 miles" of ordinary driving -- for the remapping to be 100% completed, although drivers WILL notice an almost immediate difference on the "seat of the pants dyno." The reason that I mention this is that it'd be more effective (as a testing metric) to do several runs with the Race Chip tuner having never been enabled to get a performance base line. Take your Jeep out -- before installing the Race Chip Tuner -- and get an established baseline time 0-60: Say, 7.18 seconds. Then install the Race Chip tuner and drive it for several days giving it a chance to complete its integration with the MOPAR sensors, ECU, etc. Then do three or four launches with the tuner, average them, and compare results again. When you power the Race Chip system down (e.g., turn it off), there is still going to be a residual "ghost" of the former fuel map, and it will take a while for the Jeep to completely revert to its pre-chipped, factory configuration: It's not "Instant on/off," so running with the tuner on/off/on/off like a light-switch will have the net result of blurring the baseline and making the difference in the two states (e.g., "tuned" or "un-tuned") seem less dramatic than it really is.

    Hi Matt:
    I just discovered your channel and have been watching your videos since the first.
    I live in Greece and have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler JK Rubicon 2.8 CRD.
    I have installed the Power chips module and I can say I'm very excited with the
    results. Other modifications include also the installation of silicon turbo hoses and an air filter from Pipercross.
    The Jeep has noticeable performance over stock which is 200HP and 460 NM torque. Race chip adds 56HP and 114 Nm. Turbo lag is eliminated.
    Fuel consumption is also reduced but not significantly averaging 24-25mpg. The Jeep is now over-boosting at a point that needs to upgrade the intercooler.
    My dilemma is that now I'm on the way to getting a JL Rubicon, and in Europe comes with the 2.2 Diesel engine or the 2.0 Petrol fuel Turbo engine. So which one to choose?
    I think diesel engines are great; they require less maintenance and the diesel price per lt or gallon is considerably lower in Greece than petrol.
    Concerning your 2.0 Turbo Jeep, 22-33 Mpg is impressive, and was wondering if is that your best average figure?

    So, how does a tuner affect the longevity of an engine? I hear mixed opinions on tuners for MPG specifically. Some say it's safe and others say it can cause your engine to run lean and potentially cause there to be a little more friction. Over a long period of time that might wear your engine quicker. Thoughts?
    Edit: I'm also assuming this is engine specific and not necessarily model specific. I'll be getting a Willys, not a Rubicon.

  • @Verb130
    @Verb130 ปีที่แล้ว

    I ordered and installed the same unit in my 2021 JLU 2.0L Rubicon. I had a similar performance experience as you with one notable exception.
    Let me lead with I love the performance of the RaceChip and its ease of installation.
    However I don’t like the bad engineering design that can lead to a catastrophic failure and loss of the vehicle.
    After having the chip installed for almost a month with it securely mounted horizontal on top of my fuse and relay box at the back corner of the engine bay; I went out for a day of Southern mudding. As is typical, I had a lot of mud to clean off all over the Jeep including the underbody and engine bay. I pressure washed the underbody and used a normal household hose in the engine bay; careful to only spray those components with mud and not at the top of the engine anywhere near the intake, the fluid reservoirs, and any electrical components, including the racechip and electrical fuse box. There was a very minor amount of drops that splashed in the engine bay, but I minimized it as I always do.
    For those of you that have never got your Jeep, body panel deep in wet mud, you don't completely understand that you have to clean the engine and engine bay with the amount of mud that gets caked and stuck in areas around the engine.
    Aware of the RaceChip and worried about not getting it wet, I wiped it off after I was done. I didn't notice but one or two drops splashed on the unit.
    A few hours later in the evening I was driving to the store on a 45mph road when at 2 minutes as the RaceChip startup delay ran out, my Jeep abruptly shut down while at speed and wouldn't restart. After several minutes of trying to diagnose the problem, I turned off the RaceChip through it's Bluetooth connection. My Jeep started up immediately without any problems.
    It took several hours of garage diagnose, but the LCD display is not water sealed, and not water resistant at all. Just moisture had wicked under the LCD screen and brought moisture to the attached circuit board. It was only after dismantling the unit and allowing the moisture in the LCD circuit to dry (there was no visable moisture inside the unit, just a discolored LCD screen from moisture in it.
    After the LCD was dry, the RaceChip worked as it had before.
    My problem is this is unacceptable that I can't go mudding or worse ford a river or stream for fear of a single drop of water getting on the RaceChip unit and shutting down my engine in the middle of a a river. That's bad! That could cause the total loss of the vehicle.

  • @robsolf
    @robsolf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the thing that turns me off about the unit are the "3 flavors". You can buy these at 3 different prices where the HP supposedly goes up as you pay more. I'd bet money that each unit uses the exact same chip, has the exact same capability, but the license limits what you have access to. Now, this is happening in a world where there's a bike manufacturer that installs heated handles on all their bikes but disables them unless you pay a monthly fee, so I guess I shouldn't get too irritated about it.
    I think we can all agree that +.06 seconds 0-60 isn't +60 HP, at least not at these levels. My guess is the unit mostly changes throttle input, which would explain why the eco mode seems to be effective. We lose most of our average MPG by stabbing the gas even for short intervals, so if you use 80% throttle and the unit sends 40%, your gas mileage will certainly improve.
    Finally, Diablosport, a domestic manufacturer of tuners here in the US, said back in 2020 that there really wasn't much wiggle room for these motors. Search TH-cam for "DiabloSport Tuning: The 2.0T Jeep and how we're making it better". The main reason is that the boost is already at 26 pounds from the factory, which is crazy high for stock.

    • @DIRTROADCRED
      @DIRTROADCRED  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So let me get this straight. 1.2 mpg fuel consumption improvement, and six one hundredths of a second improvement in accelerating from 0-60 mph. And all for just $500! Now don't get me wrong, I'm well impressed that my JL does 0-60 in 7 seconds, that's pretty good for a small end terrace house on wheels with the aerodynamics of a breeze block. But .06 seconds quicker doesn't exactly blow my socks off. And as for 1.2 mpg better fuel economy, if I did 10,000 miles a year I'd save about 25 gallons, so the unit would pay for itself in three years. I reckon I could do better than that by going on a diet!

      Maybe the $240 starter option would be worth it? If the 20% claim for the GTS gives 1.2 mph (maybe more on long highway journeys) then the 15% claim for the S at half the price seems a good option. And then I remind myself that I didn't buy the Wrangler for its fuel economy, so what on earth am I trying to achieve here? Does this tuner change the throttle sensitivity like the Banks pedal monster does. I am also curious about the 2 L rough idle start up. Does this tune help with that. I also have a 2 L turbo and the start up is a little rough and RPMs tend to bounce up and down just a little bit on cold start. After about a minute and a half or so or warm up the throttle dies down and then runs really smooth. What’s your experience with that?
