I agree about the sounds. If you think in terms of retro future alternative evolving realities, the Allen reality (pop satira put apart) is more human, more mundane, in a certain sense it is much more realistic than the Roddenberry's reality -- which is a much more dated simulacrum of real (Soviets versus Americans and UN Federation versus Klingon etc). Star Trek is a fabula (fable) aiming some moral and Lost in Space is a fairy tale aiming nothing in particular, nothing moral most of time and nothing truly new about the (and supposed well known) ultimately human soul.

The model was attached to cables and filmed taking off and landing. They didn't have CGI in 1965. So to hide the cables was great feat at the time. Filming in canyons made it actually looking like crash landings and takoffs from alien planets. The island in the sky episode was an initial crash landing that still looks impressive given it was 1965 technology

This video is a little more realistic showing the power and speed needing to be maintained for quite a while to reach escape velocity in order to be free from a planet’s gravity. Often we would see that as soon as space is visible, you are “free”. Mr. Allen often threw out already known scientific facts in favor of drama, (like comets giving off heat like a sun hurtling through space like a flying sun, or supernovas flying through space like a comet)!! I still ate it up as a kid and loved it when they went back to space travel in season 3!!!

One Of the coolest things to me was that the Jupiter2 as well as the Seaview and flying sub miniatures from voyage to the bottom of the sea actually had to be flown or maneuvered on wires .Therefore the miniatures actually had to move thru air or water and not the poor quality you get filming a stationary object on a blue screen stage . The ability to actually film the object and background simultaneously
made a big difference in the quality of the imagine filming a person with blue screen and then adding a background.the lighting never seems to match and there was a slight reduction in quality by overlapping film on film and the more layers added the worse the image degraded. The amazing quality of LB Abbott and the Lydecker brothers still brings a smile and a sense of wonder. Thanks for this wonderful video!!😀😀😀

As a kid I fashioned one (with an upper and lower "View -Port") then with the 2 pie pans stapled together I epoxyed a "mini" pie-pan (containing a "Cox" solid propellent rocket engine) to the bottom, then launched it from my parents patio with the use of my "Big Rail Work Train's" power transformer. It jumped 5 feet off the concrete, then, turned sideways and spun around in mid -air until the rocket engine came loose and tore It apart. What a memory. I waited until my dad left for work. The lost in space music soundtrack was so good , it was always dark with a feeling of impending doom or evil about it ,all of the TV shows from the 60's excelled in this regard from the Munsters too Get Smart and beyond ,we all knew as kids which TV show was starting just from the theme music, even cartoons had fantastic musical direction, i do miss all of that, or did until youtube came along,

By 1967 there were plenty of NASA stock color shots of Earth from orbit and great shots from Lunar orbit by Dec 1968.
These last season shots of planets were much more compelling than their earlier stuff and more than their contemporaries Star Trek and Doctor Who. However the Star Trek ship photography was much more compelling than Jupiter 2...most of both shot in 1965....but Star Trek was mostly vacuum shots away from other elements.
A better compare is the ST Shuttles to the Jupiter 2, and there the J2 is shot and composites much better.
The Class M planets never looked realistic on ST. They were either swirling color like Jupiter/Neptune or they looked like library globes with new continents painted on.

WONDERFUL! ... The original series had mostly lousy infantile plots, but it was spot-on in it's main, terrific theme, and which one film and two remakes failed to understand and capture: the Jupiter 2 was a cozy, thrilling, snug-under-the-blanket Winnebago-like camping ride with family and friends through the Galaxy!! .. Even the clumsy WOKE creators of the recent Netflix redux were totally clueless as to this joyful camping charm of the original, but instead gave us dysfunctional characters and a ghastly-looking Jupiter 2 that looked like a cold, lame thermostat dial! ... Please re-do LiS and don’t fret about incidental scientific and technical inaccuracies - allow the child-fantasies in all of us fill in these gaps! … Who doesn't fantasize, late on a rainy night, under the blankets, being with family and friends in the original Jupiter 2 visiting wonderful worlds through the galaxy?!

They should RE-DO LiS and don't let WOKE touch it!, and please, writers, don't feel awkward about possible technical and even scientific gaps - Just, PLEASE, allow the child in all of us fans to participate in filling in these gaps with our wonderlust fantasies.

Little bit of trivia. Billy Mumy is now a singer songwriter and is in a band with John (I Love the Flower Girl) Cowsill and Vicki (Walk Like an Egyptian) Peterson of the Bangles. Billy even played guitar at least once on Lost in Space. John Cowsill of course was the drummer for the musical family, The Cowsills but until recently has been the drummer for The Beach Boys for many years. John and Vicki are married.
