Couldn’t stand Dr Smith. Made it unwatchable. That was when the show was new, BTW. a nerdy classmate would do his Dr Smith panic attack, that was pretty good.
I know that Dan is pleasantly surprised. I started watching this channel last month and the number of subscribers is growing off the chain. This channel gives old folks a chance to relive their childhoods. lol
Wow. All content, no padding! And on a great topic. The reason that big pieces like the full-scale Jupiter 2 get trashed is not only because of the cost of storing them, but also hefty taxes that have to be paid on them. In the 1960s, the Sacramento Satraps realized that they could squeeze money out of the studios for their sets and dressing by calling them capital property. MGM in particular had a big stable of period vehicles, having been buying them since the 1910s . . .so they sold nearly everything that wasn't being used in a production at the time, including nearly all of their military vehicles -- which were then leased back when needed. It was a joke in the industry that the new rules had resulted in the destruction of more sets than filming the burning of Atlanta scene in "Gone With the Wind" . . . Paramount (which had inherited Desilu's assets) donated the Star Trek shuttlecraft to the PBS station in LA, which then sold it in one of their auctions. The guy who bought it told me that he paid more to transport it than to buy it, but unfortunately it was damaged by weather . . .eventually to be restored and placed on display a few years ago. Paramount had assessed the value highly, for the tax deduction. Other sets (one that comes to mind is the computer room from "Alien") were donated to non-profits, but most have just been dismantled, repurposed of simply disposed of.
my compliments on your commentary. This is exactly the sort of thing everyone should hear a lot more about concerning any movie or TV show or even an historical project. Taxes and hidden taxes and costs and deductions are all vital information and it answers a lot of questions like you just dead. I run into so much ignorance about this among beginners who want to get into the video or film business and they miss the big word, business. Permits, taxes, deductions all vital to understand. It is sad that the great studios had to get rid of such valuable things and having worked in movies and TV shows here in Texas we are still feeling the pain. no more big historical period dramas if you have to travel across the country to film on a location when you could've done it in your own backyard and everybody go home at 5 o'clock.
The MGM backlot at Jefferson and Overland (Culver City) was huge - prior to the auction(s). After clearing the lot, the property was turned into a residential complex.. The forward fuselage section of the B-25 "Ruptured Duck" (Thirty Seconds over Tokyo) was visible whenever the studio street gates were opened. Desilu's backlot was also located in Culver City.
I love Saturdays because that’s when your new videos get released. I love the timeless design of the Jupiter 2. When they made the movie in 1998 and the Netflix series I really wanted them to keep the original design, with a few modern twists. It’s good to know some of the models are still out there. Thanks again for keeping those memories alive.
Hello Dan just happened to browse videos and came across this one and I really really enjoyed what you had to show us. I’m 64 years old and I really loved and enjoyed watching lost in space. I also have a copy of the robot that I purchased from an estate sale. The robot is the one from Productions and stands about 10 1/2 inches tall. I feel so very fortunate to have found the robot from a show that I really enjoyed as a child. Again, thank you for sharing.
Well done Dan,,,,,,great piece on lost in space and the jupitor 2,,,,,,i am 62,,,,,,,but still young at hart,,,,,,i still use tape,,,,beta,,,,vhs,,,,,and 3 quarter inch u-matic,,,,,and watch lost in space quite regularly ,on these formates,,,,,still great fun to watch,,,,,grew up with these shows when they were first shown free to air,,,,,,saw a comment here about some one that would like to live in a jupitor 2 home,,,,,,me too,,,,if i ever win lotto i will build my self a jupitor 2 to live in,,,,the other ship that grabs me is the space ship from day the earth stood still,,,,,,,that craft is magic as well,,,,,,just love the way the door opens and the ramp comes out the side of the saucer,,,,,just great stuff,,,,,,great fun,,,,,congrats on your videos ,have watched a few of them, keep up the good work,,,,tally hoo,,,,,,robert ,brisbane australia,,,,,
I used to watch all of those shows when I was a kid ,the rabbit ears worked great ,I didn't even mind when I was the remote control . Good stuff Dan , thanks .
Dan, your videos are always a highlight of my week ! Seeing someone as passionate about my favorite childhood memories as I am warms my heart ! Keep up the great work, sir !
One thing that always made me go "huh?" as a kid was there were about 6 different laser gun props used through the run of Lost in Space. I feel that a deep dive into these would make a fascinating episode! This included pistols, rifles and the rarely seen "knuckleduster" gun. Thanks in anticipation! :)
I’m OG LiS. I remember the excitement for the premier, and how that robot scared the crap out of me premier night. Like close my eyes scared. Anyway, on one of our family trips from SF to LA around 1969ish around the area where there used to be tons of oil rigs, I saw the full size Jupiter 2 sitting flush to the ground surrounded by a bunch of portable buildings. It was and IIRC a radar dish where the dome used to be. 🤷♂️ no idea if it was for TV or a movie, but I saw it and it was in view for easily a minute. I was super excited.
I didn’t think the “Time Machine” segment could be surpassed for fascinating enlightenment on the history of a sci fi prop, but this video does just that! Incredible story about an ultra rare 10’ Jupiter 2 model-wouldn’t it have been great to witness it in “There Were Giants in the Earth”? But then, even an inept Cyclopean couldn’t possibly miss the spaceship with a boulder like it did repeatedly with the chariot (?)
Thanks, Dan. I was a big fan in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades watching LIS. It was on Wednesday evenings. I loved that show. I still watch reruns on Saturday nights in Chicago.
I watched Lost in Space every day after school. I remember telling my aunt one time that: I was going to be on Lost is Space. I was convinced. I told her to watch that with in a couple to a few weeks that I would be on Lost in Space as Will's friend... Never happened, of course. But I have always wanted a full-size version of the robot. I still do!!! Maybe I still will have one if I could find either one already built and fully working OR a full parts kit and put it together myself at 66+ yrs now. I know "The B-9 Club" - I could never get a response when I tried to contact them. Anyway, I only started off with this comment to tell about my telling my aunt that I was going to be on the show in a few weeks... and that's all I got to say about all that.
Really enjoyed this one thanks Dan! One little thing,City Beneath the Sea was aired on TV as a pilot in 1971,and the flying sub was recycled as one of many aqua foil subs that belonged to Pacifica.the old aurora flying sub models were used in this production as the slight in accuracy of the models were hard to miss. The Lyedecker brothers worked their magic on voyage to the bottom of the Sea especially with the flying sub, flying outside in some shots against the real sky, real object and real sky=highly convincing effect
I hope you do segments about "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", since that was Irwin Allen's most succesful and longest running series, but sadly it doesn't seem to get as much notoriety as "Lost in Space".
Watching your presentation brought back a flood of memories from when i was a kid. I loved that show along with "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". Thanks!
This is so fascinating! I grew up watching LiS on VHS in the 90s (I still have the complete set) and I was also very isolated in my passion for it, none of the kids at school even knew what Lost in Space was - it didn’t show on television in the 90s in Australia. To this day I’m the only fan I know personally. (Except my dad) It’s so great to finally get some really high quality, informative and passionate content about Lost in Space, I could listen forever. Your videos are excellent. Thanks!
My favorite TV Series as a kid growing up in the 60's. I remember being so mad when they cancelled one weeks episode.I managed to find the TV stations phone number, call it, talk to the program director and yell at him. My parents then yelled at me , when they got the long distance telephone bill. Excellent show I enjoyed your comments film clips and history so much!! A few questions for your upcoming interior sets. What is that room on the top deck to the left of the elevator that people so often go into and come out of? I own every single tape of the Show and have NEVER seen whats inside. I have speculated that where the chariot is? What are fans thoughts? Heres another one. on the lower deck there are shown Dr. Smiths cabin, Wills cabin, Pennys cabin and Prof and Mrs. Cabin. Where are Don and Judy? I have seen one show somewhere , dont ask me where which show the top of the astrogater rising up on a pole so it fits inside the top bubble on the outside of the ship. I know thats not in the Series, but was this something done and perhaps never shot? I know the interior just doesn't match what its suppose to contain, just physically impossible.
Well, it's happened! I cannot even remember how I found this, but Dan, you have become my No. 1 'cast to watch and re-re-rewatch on the internet. Your content is awesome. Thank you. You have a new 66 year old aboard. Keep this content coming. Love to see some Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea stuff as well. I went nuts when you had the shots of the Flying Sub on this video. And thank you! That little Robot voice-under with the projector on your Signature is like music to my ears.
Dan I’m from the Montreal Canada area and this has become my favorite channel. I’m 61 so really appreciate the quality of your research and narration. I have a huge sci-fi model collection including two 12 inch jupiter 2 and the 24 inch. I have the large B2 Moebius model but for some reason polar lights does not produce the glass dome anymore. Anyways fantastic show keep up the excellent work Dan 🙌
What a brilliant channel. Thoroughly fascinating. Thanks, Dan for answering the question about the fate of the full scale mock-up of the Jupiter 2. Sad.
Love your Videos Man, this is bringing back our Childhoods for alot of us. Also Sir, you have the most Incredible Voice. !!!! Keep up the great LIS Videos, we LOVE them. !!!
Love the original Lost in Space and I’ve even enjoyed the first season of the remake. Thank you for making these videos for we Gen Xers who grew up watching the series and loved the show
You weave such a good story Dan. It’s a shame in that era they tended to just repurpose the props for the next show. I would indeed love to see the Jupiter 2 be married back on top of the launch rig. Looking forward to the interior episode!
I would say the old props were reused simply because there was no CGI or 3D printing to make cheap replicas. Reusing saved a ton of money and until modern videos, much of these efforts were unknown by the general public.
I'm so grateful for your careful and relevant work. This is history at its best, narratives about series that had real social impact, technical and artistic value and outstanding emotional value. Wonderful indeed!
Thank you for all the info on the Jupiter 2 as a child I love that ship and I still do at 65 years old it was always my dream to be able to buy it but financial reasons just wouldn't work I remember that first auction of the Gemini 12 I was actually going to bid on it and I figured it would go for so much there was no way I would be able to do it and then when I heard that nobody bought it the first day boy did I kick myself again thank you for all the info on Lost in space really enjoy all your information on it
Hey, thanks so much. This channel started taking off mid december. So it's only been a couple of months :-) I'm thankful for the subscribers I have, but I'm sure it will go up :-) thanks again, Dan
Well without a doubt this is absolutely my favorite video that you have done so far… My love for the Jupiter II started when I was five years old when I saw the previews for the upcoming series. I was transfixed, as so many people were, by that HAUNTINGLY majestic flying saucer going by that 'alien' rock formation. From that moment on, and for the rest of my life I have had a special love for the beautiful Jupiter II. Thank you again Mr. Monroe… A standing ovation to you!!!
Hey, thank you so very much. The support has been overwhelming since this channel took off about 2 months ago. It's a bit overwhelming but I'm so glad people are enjoying the content :-) have a great one, Dan
When I was a kid back then, I made a Jupiter 2 from a pair of large, deep, (restaurant take-out size) paper plates stapled together (this was before the invention of Styrofoam clamshells). I cut the viewing window into it and taped a peanut butter jar lid on the bottom for the fusion engine. I attached a couple of fishing lines to the top with a stick for a handle so I could puppeteer it flying and crashing (a lot). Had lots of fun and it cost nothing to make. To be a kid again . . .
@@MoviesMusicMonsters As far as I know, that size paper plate is no longer available. And, as an adult now, my imagination will never be as good as when I was a kid. Now, it would not look like the Jupiter 2, but only two paper plates stapled together.
The Jupiter 2 always seemed a bit like Doctor Who’s Tardis to me. How it fitted the retracted landing legs, the chariot and the living quarters into the lower deck was quite a feat of engineering!
Agreed, the interior was much larger than the outside was made to be. But part of the magic was the ceiling and two walls were not there, and added to the extra space feel. Had they included the ceiling at least, it would have made the feel much smaller.
The chariot was stored in cases aboard the J2 it was assembled after they landed in the first season, always wondered why they never made a garage for it instead of having to build it and take it apart evey time they flew off to another planet
Excellent video !! Being serious sci-fi or thrash, I love Lost in Space. It is part of my childhood and teenage (until nowadays). I have models of the B-9 Robot, the cyclop and the Jupiter 2 (and Robby Robot, too). It is a pity that some of the original itens of the series are lost (somewhere "in space"). Thank you for your videos !
Oh man! When I was about 10, my family went on a back lot tour and got to go on the sound stage of Lost in Space and got to walk inside the Jupiter 2. It was so cool
Awesome, thanks please make more of these! I was told in 1986 by a book author (Joel) that Fox had to dismantle and rebuild the J2 for the season 3 episode because it could not fit through the doors of the soundstage. I read somewhere that Johnathan Harris once commented that when he drove to the studio for other work that he saw the J2 deteriorating outside (it was made of wood) and he had pity on it.
I never get tired of anything 'lost in Space". I'm so glad others feel the same way. Keep the videos coming Dan!
Hey, thank you so much I really appreciate that :-)
I did and I do.. and I will continue to watch your channel.. Thank you..I love it.
Couldn’t stand Dr Smith. Made it unwatchable. That was when the show was new, BTW. a nerdy classmate would do his Dr Smith panic attack, that was pretty good.
I actually just watched the original Lost in Space last night on METV. It's on @1:30 am
What happen to Ape city...that would a great video.
I know that Dan is pleasantly surprised. I started watching this channel last month and the number of subscribers is growing off the chain. This channel gives old folks a chance to relive their childhoods. lol
True enough 😊
That was great Dan, you can never make too many Jupiter 2 videos!😄👍👍
My childhood was filled with lost in space, star Trek, voyage to the bottom of the sea, etc. Love this channel and keep up the great work 👍
‘voyage to the bottom of the sea ‘. The flying sub was the coolest!!!!
I always loved the really cool sound of the Jupiter 2.
Adding in some background music from the series was the icing on the cake!! Loved the story!
I love your channel because
I've always wondered whatever happened to some of the iconic props & costumes
Hey thanks so much :-)

The Roddy McDowell footage of the Jupiter 2 'on set' was really something! Thanks for sharing ...
You bet :-) thanks for watching.
Lost in Space among my top favourite shows of the sixties. Thanks for another great video

Loved this video! I have to say, this is my favorite ship from the entire science fiction genre of TV shows and films!
Mine too :-) thanks so much for the support. Dan
This guy is a gem! Great smooth delivery with a great voice. He shows us stuff that the viewer really wants to see. Bravo!
Hey there :-) thank you so much for reaching out. So glad you're enjoying the channel :-) cheers, Dan
Excellent job. I always watched this show after school as a kid in the 70s. Great hearing most of the ship props survived.
Great video. I remember having a model of the flying sub when I was a kid in the 60's.
Really love the Lost in Space videos, never realised there was so many models. Love the channel Dan 👍
Yet another great one dan.
Thanks Max :-)
I didn’t think the “Time Machine” segment could be surpassed for fascinating enlightenment on the history of a sci fi prop, but this video does just that! Incredible story about an ultra rare 10’ Jupiter 2 model-wouldn’t it have been great to witness it in “There Were Giants in

Thank you very much for your work on this!
It brings back some nice memories for sure
Hey, thank you for watching :-)
Thanks, Dan. I was a big fan in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades watching LIS. It was on Wednesday evenings. I loved that show. I still watch reruns on Saturday nights in Chicago.
That's awesome :-) it's still a lot of fun to watch.
Dan, thanks for bringing back my childhood!!! I love anything Lost in Space 💜
I know "The B-9 Club" - I could never get a response when I tried to contact them.
Anyway, I only started off with this comment to tell about my telling my aunt that I was going to be on the show in a few weeks... and that's all I got to say about all that.

Hey, thank you so much for watching :-) more to come, Dan
Watching your presentation brought back a flood of memories from when i was a kid. I loved that show along with "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea". Thanks!
You blew my mind with the landing gear from Jupiter 2 in Planet of the apes

It’s so great to finally get some really high quality, informative and passionate content about Lost in Space, I could listen forever. Your videos are excellent. Thanks!
Fantastic work sir. Keep it up!
Hey, thank you so much :-) appreciated. Dan
it feels like practical effects are a lost art. Thanks for sharing.
Yes I think back of another one of my favorite movies ALIEN 1979 and the full sized set. Just incredible. No amount of CGI can match the real thing
My favorite TV Series as a kid growing up in the 60's. I remember being so mad when they cancelled one weeks episode.I managed to find the TV stations phone number, call it, talk to the program director and yell at him. My parents then yelled at me , when they got the long distance telephone bill.

thank you for a wonderful trip down memory lane.
Thanks! Always great to see where famous props ended up!
Your just awesome with all the back round stuff you come up with
Thank you for all the information. I really love your videos
Just wanted to say , I love your channel and the topics you cover. I am a huge fan of sci fi from the 50's 60's and 70's. Keep up the great work.

I'm amazed that you are able to find all those pictures and information about the Jupiter 2.
Great job!
Hey, thank you so much :-) I appreciate the support :-) Dan
Dan you make this nerd happy. Every video I watch puts a SMILE on my face 😃
Awesome presentation and background information . much appreciated and thanks
Nicely done Dan! With a voice like yours you should be a radio DJ!! Cheers!

Great content and presentation!
Hey, thank you so much :-) Dan
Danger Dan Monroe, DANGER DANGER!!!!! Hahaha….. Good video.
I don't understand why you don't have a million subscribers. The TH-cam algorithm is really slacking.
Hey, thanks so much. This channel started taking off mid december. So it's only been a couple of months :-) I'm thankful for the subscribers I have, but I'm sure it will go up :-) thanks again, Dan

Whichever J2 is in the best shape needs to be in the Smithsonian with The Enterprise!
You know what? I totally agree :-)
Always neat to see your videos. Thanks, Dan!
Great stuff. Good work. Thanks, Dan.
Hi Dan thanks for making the videos, they are so interesting.Keep up the good work many thanks.
To be a kid again . . .
That's awesome. You should make another one the same way :-)
@@MoviesMusicMonsters As far as I know, that size paper plate is no longer available. And, as an adult now, my imagination will never be as good as when I was a kid. Now, it would not look like the Jupiter 2, but only two paper plates stapled together.
I just can't get enough of your videos. Keep it up, Sir...👍
This is very well done Dan.
I always have felt the Jupiter 2 was a great looking saucer.
You never cease to amaze me Dan! These videos are so fun! I am recommending this channel to everyone! Thanks.
Just came across your channel a couple of days ago, really enjoying it! Keep it up!!
Absolutely Brilliant 👏. Thank You so Much for all Your Research and Explanation.
Fantastic 😉👍
I see that Robert Kinoshita died at 100 years old. God bless.
He was an amazing man and I was glad to know him :-)
Thanks for another fascinating, informative episode! I'm hooked on Movies, Music and Monsters!
The Jupiter 2 was great, but I really wanted my own chariot when I was a kid. Another great video, subbed.
OMG, YES!!
I’m grown up and in my death rattle years and still want the chariot
It was made from an old sno cat used for grooming the snow on ski slopes. Have seen several homemade ones here on you tube
I learnt a few new things from this video. Cheers.

Don West. I did not know.
Really well done documenting this
This was a cool video I grew up on this show!
Was my favorite tv show when i was a kid in the 60s still think the J2 is the coolest flying saucer ever!
Wonderful content, thank you sir!!
Yet another fine show, really liking your stuff.
Wow.. thanks Dan 👍😎✊
Hey, you are very welcome :-) thanks for watching :-)
Brilliant Dan! Thanks heaps for all your work!
That was fun. Thanks.
Great stuff thank you!
Oh man! When I was about 10, my family went on a back lot tour and got to go on the sound stage of Lost in Space and got to walk inside the Jupiter 2. It was so cool
Man I really enjoy your channel content and professional presentation, great job sir
I reall, really wanted that full sized Jupiter 2 in my backyard when I as a kid.
Haha :-) me too
This is so cool, I was 6 when this came on the air. Christmas the next year one of my presents was the Remco Lost in Space Robot. Such great memories!
