Enterprise Leaves Spacedock with James Horner Score - Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country

- I've been wanting to do this animation for years.
This is originally a scene from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, that I re-edited with animations and re-scored with James Horner's brilliant soundtrack titled "Genesys Destroyed" from the complete score of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
I always felt that, given that The Undiscovered Country was the final journey of the Enterprise, her final departure from Spacedock into adventure was a bit "low-key". The Enterprise has always been a character for herself, and giving her some moments to shine in her departure to her final voyage would have been great.
Around 2010 I did the cover of the Ships of the Line 2011 calendar ( memory-beta.fandom.com/wiki/S... ), which I later turned into a tiny little animation ( • Star Trek - Ships of t... ). Somewhere around the same time I came across the complete soundtrack for The Search for Spock, and when I heard the track "Genesys Destroyed", I immediately had the vision for this animation in mind.
When I sat down to do a quick edit, the score and the live action scenes fit like a glove.
1521 hours of rendering 16854 frames later, we're finally here.

Is Full impulse equivalent to the speed of light?
@@troyx9459 Full impulse is 1/4 the speed of light in the Voyager Technical manual. So 1/4 impulse is pretty dang fast like this. But the series depictions of impulse changes every time it's used.
If you remember that scene in Star Trek 60 Undiscovered Country where the Enterprise jumps out of Warp to go to orbit at kithomer? The speed she was going at must have been full impulse. That's impressive too
Enterprise leaving Spacedock on 1/4 impulse was the equivalent of Kirk burning rubber out of the parking lot. He does it so often, I bet spacedock control makes sure there are no ships just beyond the doors when Enterprise prepares to depart.
Absolutely! One thing that grates with the stealing the Enterprise scene is that at one quarter impulse they would have crashed into the doors in the time it took Kirk to say Scotty. I would re-dub it but Stiles says it too. I suppose could edit out the word impulse maybe and take Kirk's thrusters from TMP?
OK, the shot of her turning on thrusters in Spacedock made my jaw hit the floor.
Even the nice touch of that little 'deflection crystal' at the top of the engine mounts lighting up..

Wonderful! Your depiction brings back the feeling of size, power and majesty I've not seen since the Drydock scene in ST-TMP. I first watched that scene just a day or two after visiting CVN-65, walking down the pier she was moored to. I easily could believe the Starship was every bit as big and massive as the Carrier Enterprise.
The Constitution Refit is still my favorite version of Enterprise with the 1701E a close second. You've treated this Lady well.
The Enterprise refit is the most beautiful ship in all of science-fiction.
Honestly, Paramount should bring Cliff Eidelman back to rescore this scene so it matches the rest of the soundtrack (although the Horner STIII score is perfect) and insert THIS version in a remaster.

I love that "one quarter impulse" finally gets put into perspective. In the original, it seemed like they went out the doors pretty casually. I was always like "what's the big deal? why would regulations require you to go even slower than this?"
But impulse engines have always kinda been described as being fast. Crazy fast for something that *isn't* warp speed. The way it's depicted here, both the regulation and Valeris' hesitation make much more sense. Starfleet's basically like "Do not peel out of spacedock. You will end up smashing your ship into the space door or clipping another ship or worse. Unless you're James Kirk. Then you just do whatever the hell you want, we guess."
Star Trek equivalent of Maverick buzzing the tower.
That...and it explains all the cadets around the bridge grinning when Valeris finally says "aye sir"

I know speeds in Star Trek can be iffy far as what it what but I think in the the tech manual full impulse is is 1/4 the speed of light. Which is plenty for zooming around a star system. So that would make 1/4 impulse 11,00 miles a second. So crazy speeds. This seems like an accurate depiction of what that would be like
Without question, the BEST version of the Enterprise, hands down.
Some of the shots from the back really made me feel like this was the TOS TV series enterprise, incredible work and probably the very first one of these that I genuinely thought is head and shoulders above the original.

I believe the correct term for this is "starship phonography". The thrusters being used, the deflector dish powering up, the damn thing BOOSTING out of spacedock... just. just beautiful.
The money shot is the thrusters firing and the ship turning around, wow. That captures the scale of the ship and its movement perfectly. I love this.

Oh yes, I completely agree! This is what I'm missing so much in all the "nu trek" they simply dont understand anymore that the Ships and how they are presented is such an important aspect of Star trek... It has ben said so often, but I't seemingly can't be said enough: The ships in ST are - so to say - characters of their own and should be given as much attention as every other member of the main cast :)

@@florianN132 I think if there was anything to actually like about the JJ-Trek films is that he absolutely appreciated the sense of scale and personality that ships were supposed to have, even if everything else was pretty off the cuff and hyper-exaggerated.
The thrusters firing is my legit favorite part. Such a small detail yet it yields a massive payoff.
This puts great context in Kirk's praise that Valeris piloted the Enterprise well out of spacedock. The original portrayal looked like pretty straight forward flying.

That, and the scene where crewmen in engineering were wondering what the hell they were doing, while Scotty is thoroughly enjoying it.

The original just looks like a standard departure with aft thrusters. This really does look like one quarter impulse power.
Isn't that kind of the point of steering out of space dock in a good way? To go straight instead of, idk, zigzagging and crashing against a wall?

It’s absolutely amazing how much VFX tools have improved since 1991. But, tools alone don’t make a scene this good. The scale, pacing, and angles were all superb. Truly a work of art.

And you just can't beat good character development. The central characters had been making television shows and movies for nearly three decades at this point. I love Uhura's head shake/tsk-tsk/wry smile response when Valeris quotes departure protocols to Kirk. She has clearly seen that done more than once before. Undiscovered Country was a fantastic homage to the original crew. What a journey they took us on!

Yeah, now that you mention it, most of the movies never really made it clear just how fast impulse power could drive the ship. The only thing I can readily think of is actually is either I or II (can’t recall which), when they showed the planets whipping by on the way out of solar system at full impulse (IIRC)

If I were to have a critique, it would be I'm really missing the lights from the cities on the moon. :)
Or better yet, having the top person, who controls the comings and goings of ships, spilling a hot beverage all over themselves and swearing at Kirk. Like in the scenes they do in Top Gun, when they buzz the tower.
Seeing how full impulse is supposed to be 1/4 lightspeed (at least in TNG), 1/4 impulse is 1/16C. Or 11,243 miles per SECOND!
And yet, in ST3, Enterprise and Excelsior were supposed to be at 1/4 impulse during the theft of the former, despite both ships being depicted as moving at a leisurely pace.

This is a massive improvement on the original, and that is saying a lot. I especially like the shot of the reaction control thrusters firing, but the gold medal shot is the 1/4 impulse rear view of Spacedock getting real small real fast, which puts into perspective just how fast impulse speeds really are.
I can't think of any scenes in the various Star Trek incarnations where the actually fast speed of impulse was shown in a way that we could grasp easily. This clip really demonstrates just how crazy fast impulse can be. And to think this was only 1/4 impulse speed! Just imagine if we had anything approaching the lower end of the speed of impulse right now today. People would be all over the Sol System exploring in person. Oh well, as Professor Farnsworth said, "A man can dream. A man can dream."
@@JerryFisher Exactly, and impulse doesn't have set numbers. full impulse for one ship might be 3/4 impulse on another due to size of ship, design, amount of impulse drives ect. In the TNG manual it states that the Enterprise D could reach Warp 1 velocities at maximum impulse which would be light speed, but unlike warp they would be susceptible to time dilation.
That would mean that for the Enterprise D 1/4 impulse could be around 168,000,000 MPH.
@@JerryFisher TMP shows off the speed of impulse, in fact when he gives the order for impulse, they do it in decimals of warp. There's less of a easy scale to see the speed, but it is there.
The biggest thing for me is not just the obviously incredible CG work, but how much time you've spend making it look coherently as one, all the exterior shots match the source materials lighting styles and palettes. Might seem like a small thing, but damn, it makes all the difference. If I didn't know better I'd just assume this was a deleted scene.

There's even a Right-Way-Up-Reliant in the shot where they're lining up with the door. It was originally meant to have the nacelles above the saucer section.
The look of "oh shit" on Valeris' face is even more poignant in this edit. It's not just about the regulation they're about to break, but the fact that somehow she's gotta put it though the door on impulse power, something that didn't translate quite so well in the movie. I really hated this scene in the move because that 1/4th impulse power order breaks canon.

Beautiful work. The film as originally presented didn't really show how nuts it is to engage the impulse engines in Spacedock. The novelization stated it, but couldn't really show it. Now the visual matches the text. Bravo!
Right? That sense of speed is only really on screen once in the movies that I can recall: in the first film, there's a rearward-facing image in the viewscreen as Enterprise powers away from Earth, and you remember that impulse power is supposed to get the ship to something not far from light speed. They never used to use the warp drive until clear of the solar system...

The Enterprise-A is still my favourite incarnation - great sequence. You should do the "stealing the enterprise" sequence from Search for Spock too - that would be awesome.
Well it's 32 years since The Undiscovered Country was released, so when I settled down to watch this clip of that film, my first thought was, 'Funny, I don't remember that fantastic scene'. In the theatrical release, this was a non-event but your version sent tingles down my spine. Well done.
I was a young man when that movie came out. Now I am past middle age. Shatner is about the last one kicking and he is in his 90’s.

I didn't see it as a none scene. It's fun. Her trying to push regulations on the captain, it introduces the dynamic.
Goes to show you that effects were damn expensive back then. None of this new stuff was impossible then, just costly even for a major feature such as this. It would be awesome to revisit these films and update their effects.
The music, the timing... the integration of the effects with the acting... this is an absolute masterpiece. This is not just reworking effects for effects' sake. This was a reinvention of the entire scene. Absolutely magnificent.

That really captures my thoughts as well. As much as I admire the folks who have been able to "duplicate" the original model work with computers, this is one of the few I've seen to really properly "reimagine" was this sequence could be with modern computing hardware. I am now spoiled.

When I was a kid and it was just "the blue light on the front", I always thought it looked like some great eye looking out upon the universe.
This is wonderful!!! I loved seeing the activation of the thrusters and the movement of the ship under their influence. Showing the activation of the impulse drive was awesome also! This might be the first time I have seen an accurate portrayal of the speed that can be achieved under impulse power. What I read decades ago was that light speed can be achieved under impulse power. That looked like a relatively accurate depiction of one-quarter impulse while keeping that in mind.
That's gorgeous! The sheer sense of heft she's got after that maneuvering thruster burn made my heart sing. And what a rush! Just flawless! Thank you so much.
Rather a bit like Starship Troopers' battlecruiser "swinging" around out of its spacedock parking spot. That was nicely done also!
Indeed still the only thing I actualy liked about this was how that manuvering thruster was used to turn the ship around 180 degrees. That ofc reminded me of how the ships in the reboot JJ Abrams film did a similar 180 degree turn in prep for warp in a similar way that 180 degree thruster turn from the tmp enterprise was quite well utilized :3 also forgive me for mentioning the reboot jj abrams film and the ships from there but the 180 thruster turn from the tmp enterprise Thruster reminded of that scene and the JJverse ships doin that.
That was something to see. a busy space dock, RCS thrusters being fired, and that departure *chef's kiss*

From every angle. It's just not possible to take a boring picture of the Enterprise. I have admired her since I was a child in the 70s.

I can't stop rewatching this. The way you conveyed the sheer scale of mass as the ship swings around is hypnotizing. The ignition of thrusters, thrum of the deflector energizing, and the amber glow of the impulse engines are all wonderful. The way you jumped between scales - from shuttle to starbase to starship - was seamless and truly made these objects enormous. Love the use of Horner's score and how you built anticipation and tension energy into this. Well done!

Full impulse is .25 times the speed of light... so 1/4 impulse is still really, REALLY freaking fast. Kirk was basically peeling out in the parking lot.

That was nothing short of absolute perfection! As someone who grew up with the classic Trek films, this made me grin so hard my face hurt! The integration of James Horner’s score, the beauty shots of the shuttle, the detail on the Enterprise (her lights & the glimpses inside her through the windows, and - AT LAST! - her maneuvering thrusters in action!)…. And the Enterprise screaming out of Spacedock…! Thank you for this! I’ll be rewatching this a LOT,😁

This might be the best rendition of the Enterprise Refit, I've EVER seen. The turn/thrusters, the activation of the Deflector Dish and Sound, I've rewatched that like 10 times, and it gives me goosebumps each time. WELL Done.
This is what happens when the entire product is elevated - the visual quality, the cinematography, the proper use of music emotionally, tying it in with the actor's scenes, and still all operating within canon rules as far as the Constitution specs. On top of that, giving us tidbits we've never scene before. Fantastic. You can tell the creator loves the material. I would compare this to scene 38 re-imagined Vader/Kenobi fight as far as high quality fan-made productions go.
This is not the Enterprise Refit, this is the new Enterprise 1701-A after Refit was destroyed in Star Trek 3. It was the Yorktown but was redesigned Enterprise. They both look the exact same though from the exterior.
@@Firefyta2 I was alluding to the entire Constitution Class branch being Refit that happened in the early 2270s. This is clearly supposed to be “from” Star Trek VI, with the interspersed dialogue, so saying it was the 1701-A is kinda obvious.

@@deanneely3443 Well if you are talking about the Enterprise-D being stolen from the space Museum in Season 3, it actually not the best piece of CGI work. This is actually much better. Keep in mind guys, these days when CGI work in TV is deficient, its usually because of time constraints and/or lack of pay. TV Productions have been trimming back budgets more and more, since things have gotten more expensive and its been harder to make more bucks lately. Fans have all the time in the world on their side, and passion to replace lack of pay.
@@deanneely3443 Like hell it isn't. PS3 wasn't bad when it came to the ship effects but it still just felt like more of the Disco crap. This felt like something inspiring, like the Enterprise should always be. Good times. Good times.

It's a nice refit for the Connies, but I still like the old Bussard domes on the original nacelles. Bad move, making those go away.

Whatever the future may bring for mankind’s true journey to the stars, I hope those ships are as beautiful as the Constitution Class Enterprise. I won’t be there to see that (my biggest regret), but in my heart I know Einstein will not stand in the way of faster than light travel to take us to the final frontier.
Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful. Not only the Enterprise but the San Francisco background, ESD flyby and details and all the TMP era ships outside and inside Space Dock. Once again proving that the fandom loves Trek more than it’s owners. It would be wonderful to see such scenes in remastered versions of the movies. 🔥👏🏼
definitely need to hire this person to redo all of them. Just like the STTOS remaster with option of original and enhanced version to chose. Either way this was just wow.
The rights owners have always had a love hate relationship with Star Trek, they love for the money it makes but don't really like Star Trek fans all that much.

That is proper movie quality CG! Well done and edited. I especially like the utter absence of any and all lens flares! Also the very detailed textures and windows with actual depth make the model feel very real. This is the kind of care and respect an iconic ship like the Enterprise deserves on screen!

Considering that 1/4 impulse is 0.0625c, then, yeah, that's exceptionally fast!
The look on her face is perfect. A lot of people don't realize just how fast you travel under impulse power. The Enterprise could have bounced any smaller shuttle easily. Many of them might have thought they had plenty of time to move out of the way of a ship under thruster power.

@@MarkHevingham True, the later films are not as creative or impressive as the early ones, but they still beat CGI almost every time. I just can't get invested in what I'm seeing if it's a cartoon. There's no physicality to it; it really breaks my suspension of disbelief.
100 out of 10 on this. Always loved the score from ST2-ST3. The VFX are so on point. the Entermise-A almost looks as real as it did in ST6, and the beauty shots you did of it were way better than anything we saw in the movie. That very last scene where the enterprise speeds out of Spacedock, that last part of the musical score, evetime i hear it, in my head I always say "Goodbye David". I'd love to see more, Stealing the Enterprise from ST3, the Battle of the Mutara nebula, the Ambush of the Enterprise from ST2.
Normally these kinds of edits with new effects come off as overindulgent, but this is just perfectly judged, edited and scored. Very well done!

Hello Fans. It is so wonderful that so many of you love Star Trek, and the beautiful ship. The refit and A are my favorites. Never will forget the first time seeing the Refit in TMP. So beautiful and awe-inspiring. Seeing Enterprise on the big screen blows my mind.
The thrusters firing is a great addition. Also the 1/4 impulse shows just how fast that really is.
This remake literally changes the entire dynamic of that scene, from the music, to the exterior shots. Grand adventure vibes. Great job.
Completely agree, but I’d say inside spacedock ships should be smaller and numerous. That’s a huge spacedock tiny white windows indicate that so the traffic for that inside should be heavy and abundant
No reason for the ship to bank like that. It’s not an airplane. Takes away from how big they are.

The timing of :13 to :20 is breathtaking. The flare of the sun obscuring the shapes that resolve into Spacedock; I've never seen anything like it. The music even lines up!
The center of gravity and the feel of inertia when the thrusters fire is also masterfully done.
Your retiming of Horner's music for the whole scene is also pretty impressive. Especially still managing to hit with the Courage theme in the same place where Eidelman did.
Came back a year later. Still get chills when the maneuvering thrusters fire and the deflector dish powers up.

Man, you make the Constitution-class look good. The choice to use James Horner’s score is fantastic. As his effort to give Enterprise her own motif allows her a true sense of majesty, even when she’s doing something as simple as “pulling out of the garage”.
You definitely need to be hired by Paramount this is a lot better than 4k this definitely needs to be in the movie all of it
Nice to see the RCS actually used. And the thrust from the impulse engines, very nice touch; the shot shows just how powerful those engines truly are.
That sweeping shot across the back of the ship as it lines up the space dock doors - Magnifique!! Chef's Kiss!!!
Enterprise leaving Spacedock that fast and the aft shot of it doing so gave me SERIOUS Beyond vibes when Enterprise left Starbase Yorktown and I LOVE IT. ❤
Oh, and the thruster scene was just PERFECT. My goodness, you REALLY get the sheer scale of the Enterprise as she maneuvers like that!
If ships and stations have soul the spirit of Yorktown say to her little sister enterprise “ show them what you can do and come back safe and sound”

Add another voice to the "holy SHIT look at the old girl turn!" chorus. And seeing her leap out of Spacedock was a hell of a lot of fun. Just absolutely gorgeous visuals all around. Love the use of music too.
Very curious, what kind of hardware was doing the rendering? Is it all CPU-bound or is there GPU acceleration as well?
Thank you! LightWave uses CPU rendering, and I had to use some tricks. With GPU renderers you'd be able to make it look even better in less time.
I appreciate that you filled spacedock with other ship types. One thing that bugged me about the movies was that apart from the Enterprise and Excelsior, we only ever saw the edge of a nacelle or saucer of another ship, because the movies didn’t have the budget to create new designs and models just for a brief background shot. Fantastic animation.

imagine seeing it leave space dock and trying to take a picture to remember to only see a fuzzy imagine because they used impulse instead of thrusters to leave the docking doors.

This is one of the most fantastic private/fanmade effects pieces of the Enterprise I've ever seen. The thruster rotation sequence is phenomenal. Absolutely fantastic.

The grin on my face is making my cheeks sore. Beautifully done. She felt like a real, breathing vessel (as breathing as a vehicle can get). One can visually see the weight she has in her movements.
A confession: I'm more of a Star Wars fan but I loved the Original Series as a child. This is epic, and did bring a lump to my throat. Finally someone shows impulse power as fast!
I keep coming back to this video to watch it. It's absolutely magnificent and original, showing a different perspective then we get normally - especially the thrusters and the actual acceleration of 1/4 impulse, which we never get to see in the series/movies. I think it's my favorite fan-made ST video of all times. Bravo.

The first 30 seconds is god mode, it is absolutely amazing.
I just noticed from WHERE the Spacedock is in it's orbit - it would be EASILY visible from the ground on Earth with the naked eye. Just like some people used to make a hobby of driving to the end of the runways at airports to eat burgers from the local fast food joint and watch the planes take off as they ate - I imagine people on the ground look up - maybe with binoculars - and watch the ships come and go at Spacedock. Maybe the tech even exists to have handheld magnification devices that'll bring in details like the names on the sides of the ships if the angle is right!
I can just imagine the scene. A handful of people having an early morning pre-dawn party and watching the Spacedock as it crosses the horizon. They pause their joking around and eating and all hold their binocs to the sky and watch the ships come and go.
And one of them notices a gap in the pattern - "They've cleared the approach and departure vectors on the trailing spacedock door quadrant... I wonder what's going... GREAT BIRD OF THE GALAXY did you see THAT SHIP? What the HELL WAS THAT?"
An older gentleman of the group laughs out loud, and the teenager asks, "Uncle Kyle? You know that one?"
"I sure do! THAT my boy was Jim Kirk and the Enterprise! I should know, I served on the original "E" for a few years. No finer ship. No finer Captain! And that stunt he just pulled - oh yeah. That's him all right. Hope he didn't scare his helmsman TOO much!"
