acc to me going to the gym 3 times a week including 5 basic compound lifts the rest of the day you do walking and little bit of core eating in an IF style diet was the best routine for me for getting leaner muscular and adhere for an entire year. Yes push pull legs with 5 meals a day works better but can you stick to eat for an year probably not.
It was same in my case too but then I start counted my calories thereafter lost 4 kg in 4 weeks and also gained few pounds of muscle. I just cut off 200 calories from my maintenance calories.
