While this video is titled 'Why Is Modern Poetry So Bad' it definitely focuses more on slam poetry trends and bad Instagram poetry from the 2010s (but I still think the criticism upholds!). As someone who has loved slam poetry (and was somewhat of a slam poet herself, I've noticed certain trends in online poetry, specifically Instagram poets, Instagram poetry, and Instagram poems) that make me call into question the modern structure of this art form. Why is rupi kaur made so much fun of? Why is Atticus popular? Why are so many Instagram poets the exact same brand of mediocre? I don't really say they're names, but I do basically ask these questions during the video.
Is Instagram poetry changing the landscape of poetry? Is this some sort of poetic revolution that will change the face of literature? Or is this just another victim of our obsession with surface-level content to gain online popularity?
this entire video is opinion based (with some cited facts) that are not meant to pock fun of your tastes, what you enjoy or specific individuals, but just reflect on my own observations :)

God it's so refreshing to hear someone actually call out bad art. There's a reason not all art is studied or remembered, and it's because sometimes art is a lot less subjective than we like to tell ourselves

I've been writing poetry for most of my life, and it is pretty saddening to watch the real-time commodification of poetry (and the arts in general), particularly in the case of sites like instagram. The greatest sin of instagram poetry to me is just the fact that it's so boring and dull. Most of it is obvious and common sense, you don't gain any insights or intrigue from it, and there's no reason to read the same poem twice because all of it is so surface-level. Simplicity is not bad, simplicity is a powerful tool in the hands of the right poet, but there is a difference between a poem being simple and a poem lacking substance. Instagram poetry very often falls under the latter description

@@nameless-ck3du 6 months later, I don't know if this is still pertinent, but I'm going to respond anyway. A couple things come to mind. First of all, what poets do you like? If you know the kind of poets you like, then you can understand on some level what kind of poetry you would want to write. I like Poe, Baudelaire, Swinburne, and Blake, my interest in their work informs what I write about and how I write. Obviously, you shouldn't just be a one to one copy of a poet you like, but there's no issue in drawing influence from their work. Second of all, what things interest you? Poets will write poetry about things that captivate their interest, whether that's death, love, the ocean, nature, dreams, or whatever else. I write about whatever I happen to be interested in at whatever time. In terms of improving your writing, just read poetry and write poetry regularly. But overall, I wouldn't be too concerned at doing poetry 'right', just focus on writing something and you'll get where you want to be with time

I know right? The very point of poetry is to make in impact on the reader, in its own subjective way. These ridiculous two-worded 'poems' give no freedom for the reader to actually tailor the words appropriately to their circumstances. It's more like the random thoughts we ALL have from time-to-time, it's just the apparent 'poets' writing them down on A5 paper, and wasting half the pages.

In the realm of verse, a question posed,
"Why is modern poetry often supposed,
To be lacking the magic, the rhyme, the grace,
That once defined this hallowed space?"
Some say it's a departure from the old,
A break from tradition, a story retold,
Modern poetry seeks a new way to speak,
To capture the essence of the world we seek.
In the age of screens and fleeting thought,
The pace of life is lightning-hot,
Modern poetry must adapt and evolve,
To mirror the world it aims to resolve.
In brevity and rawness, it may find its voice,
In fractured lines and choices of the poet's choice,
It dives into emotions, the human strife,
In the turbulent waters of contemporary life.
But is it bad, this modern rhyme?
Or just a shift in the sands of time?
For art, like life, must ebb and flow,
To find new ways to express, to glow.
While some may mourn the days of old,
Where rhyme and meter stood bold,
Modern poetry's journey is far from done,
In the hearts of poets, the battles are won.
So let it be, this poetic ride,
In the shifting tides, where poets bide,
Modern or classic, in words we find,
The beauty of thought, the eternal bind.

  • @nicojara1
    @nicojara1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

"To express the beauty of humanness" yeah that pretty much sums it up, like there's gonna be something tangible/real in the lines to move the Heart and lift the Soul, bc I think what we all want at the end of the day is to feel, to experience sensations.
Most of the poems I love were written by ppl who passed away centuries ago, so when I read contemporary poets and get depressed by how bad it is I worry it's a result from some prejudice towards the new. Glad to see I'm not alone on this!

thank you for this video. i was never much of a writer or even a reader of poems, and i never saw the appeal of poetry--probably because this emerging genre of "instagram poetry" was so prevalent that i had created a stereotype of poetry based off that. it wasn't until i dove into some older, more metaphorical and richer poetry in my literature class that i realized i actually enjoy poetry and literature in general. i recently started writing occasionally, like when a random idea hits me, and i already feel this little voice in my head telling me i'm supposed to write like all these other modern poets and that my work only consists of tedious imitations of 'outdated' poetry. i guess i'm still trying to find my voice, and i'm just glad there are other people who appreciate the deeper and perhaps more archaic types of poetry :)

Girl I care far too much. Sometimes a single bad line break makes me want to throw a book against the wall. I think it's important to consider the context of a poem.
Instapoetry exists within the context of a scrolled or scrolling timeline of mostly images. Each post only gets a few seconds of consideration if that. A good Instagram needs to convey it's difference from photography or another visual art form then be quickly read and in some way be interpreted within those seconds in order to be appreciated or have more time and attention given to that work.
Performance poets are primarily performers in the moment of presenting their work to an audience and secondarily poets. An audience is usually for more appreciative of a good performance with little to no use of poetic techniques within a written or improvised speech than a terribly presented work of meticulously crafted poetic genius.

great video! I think this over saturation of very shallow cliché poetry can be linked to the commodification of culture, a loss of individuality due to ever increasing algorithm-based preferential treatment for everything that is quick and easily digestible as to draw people's attention quickly (& oftentimes make more money). It's kind of a hellish cycle - consumer subjects are formed by the exposure to so much shitty poems/music/movies and consequently seek out and push that kind of standardized mass culture even more. would recommend Adorno/Marcuse's writing on the phenomenon

No one is sad except for the sage,

Till the end of each day,
Too much knowledge torments the soul,
It is not necessary to know the wind's role,
Feel the wind with your whole being,
Just like the village that is singing,

I do love the way you describe poetry and what poetry means to you! When it comes to that, we're pretty much on the same page. Since the art of writing is something very dear to my heart, I couldn't resist sharing my thoughts on what you said (some of which you already mentioned in your video). As a hobby writer & a fan of poetry reaching from classics to instagram content, I think there are some more things to note. As I stated before, I think you are right by calling out the pieces of writing you called out. Compared to other modern poets, putting one sentence into verse is no masterpiece. To me, it seems more like a shortened stream of consciousness - a way to set a scene or put a picture into words. Now, I still think (though the term poetry might not be 100% accurate) forms of art are constantly changing and what we consider "proper" poetry now, might be something no one likes to read in years from now, since it doesn't fit into the fast-living and fast-consuming lifestyle of our population. Instagram poetry does. And as much as I adore reading Bukowski (not the themes, but the writing itself) and wish I was skilled enough to be able to interpret Dickinson, there is something about the accessibility and directness of some modern poetry, that can be truly addicting to gather inspiration. It's kinda the more pretentious form of facebook quotes we read in 2010.
What I think is the most important thing to keep in mind within the discussion of what can be considered poetry, is that the meaning of art is something the recipient creates (pretty much what you said talking about the vice article). Imagine a young poet starting to turn journal entries into what they consider poetry and uploading it to social media. You might read it and though the writing is filled with cliché metaphors and seems like it's just 2 sentences put in verse, it still might be something, that moves you, since you feel similar. You just don't have to read between the lines to understand it. I don't wanna imply everything accessible has to be just a sentence written in verse, same as I don't wanna imply a sentence written in verse is to be considered poetry. But (even though the motifs are questionable, and the style is plain) instagram-styled poetry can be the entryway to reading and/or writing more complex poetry over time.
Now, one last addition: I think one of the biggest problems I personally have with instagram poetry is the marketing. Atticus for example is marketed as "the modern-day [insert famous poet names here]" which is just completely misleading. Atticus is not supposed to be read like classic poets, but he's marketed as if he had the same class and put on a pedestal he doesn't belong on, because he simply can not compare to classic poets. He doesn't have to, of course. But pretending he does is only just that - pretending.

Seeing the examples of "women being metaphors" honestly made it so clear how people just use line breaks to seem like their sentences are deeper than they truly are. It also ruins the rythm of the poem when you have to pause and scan to the next line to even read the whole poem. Don't get me wrong, line breaks are a great and real way to write your poem, but all those examples just seems to me like they wrote it that way to stretch out a single sentence and call it complete. Everything about instagram poetry screams "I had a tumblr account during my formative years," and I'm not trying to dunk on anyone (I literally still have a tumblr account AND make my own bad poetry) but wasting paper by using unnecessary line breaks to make the pages seem less blank is almost an apt metaphor on how these poems lack so much substance that they take no more than 8 words to complete. It lacks depth, all these poems could be so much better if they just TRIED to delve into these emotions, and truly write about how the experience made them feel without using the same trite clichés of "she was a thunderstorm, and i love the rain"
Maybe I'm just being a hater, but commercially pushed modern poetry makes it harder for people to find better poets with more to say. It's become such an oversaturated market. And that's truly what it is, a sterile, bland product meant to sell as much books and waste as much paper on poems that have absolutely nothing interesting to say.

Atticus makes me want to punch myself in the eye for having looked at it. The social media era has destroyed the sanctity of poetry. ...but then also I ask myself, Why is it so popular? It's popular because there's a parallel decline of culture and the general intelligence of the masses. We're getting dumber as a people, and thus the quality of our art is getting dumber. So Atticus is so popular because his juvenile poetry is about all the poetry the people can digest. It is what it is.

I AM a poet, a real poet, not an Instagram poet, and I followed a few Instagram poetry accounts looking for inspiration or ya know, be with a community.... and I kept screaming at my phone "That's a Sentence with Random Line Breaks, it's NOT a POEM!!!... It drives me absolutely insane! I wrote a "poem" about it.
    poetry is
    many
    beautiful things,
    but a
    sentence with
    random line
    breaks
    is not a
    poem.
I'm so angered by this but I just hope that my poetry will blow this crap out of the water and be a diamond in the rough. Hope my book sells huge. lol

this is definitely what I have been feeling for quite a while but couldn't find the words to express what exactly was wrong. I am just an amateur writer and have written poetry on accident (I still don't quite get where I get some of my lines from cause unlike story telling it's such a different process) but almost all the Instagram poetry felt like a pretty one liner rather than something with a even a little weight.
We as humans always desired complex things in a simple way, Instagram poets seem to put simple things in a simpler way with a few saccharine words thrown in.
I think the reason it works is cause certain words have a little moods attached to it along with the vibe of the background photo. Like people who hear storm immediately think of rain or something dark and rainy out of a movie, people who hear 'badass' have this image of a biker chick in black. Wild is associated with nature and soul is something ethereal and hence those images together seems to grab people.
There is also a reason this kind of poetry is heavily admired by amateurs since they have a vivid imagination and with just few words can think of entire scenarios (not to say other people can't admire this kind of "poetry", but I have seen this way too often)

I've been writing poetry for a while.
And I moved to writing poems on Instagram thinking "poems" would be read as they should. But I realized pretty early that the attention span of readers is so short that they are not willing to spend more than 5 seconds on your poem. I guess that could be the justification for bad modern poetry.
I've been experimenting with various poetry styles on my account. Some good, some intentionally and unintentionally bad and some that could be classified as cringe. The consumption and feedback on the 2 liners was almost 2 or 3 times that of conventional poetry that needed time to decipher.
We're forced to adapt and be versatile, whilst not compromising on the poem itself and that's hard. Having said that, experiencing life and all that it has in store for you always makes for a great read, irrespective of what the engagement rates are telling you.

    An empty cup
    Was I the empty cup?
All circumstance, that hurled too many untouched horizons into
    guts, gutted
    Now, tranquil, a gutter cry
What do lips like that feel like on mine in moonlight
I gift myself an ending, a great ending, I am my own finality.

    Good video. Insightful, absolutely true.
But be more confident. I clicked on the video as I am interested in poetry. You don't need to discredit yourself by commenting on how niche the topic is and how few people are going to care about it. Even if it's niche, there's bound to be a ton of people interested in it, like myself, on the internet. Also, it's poetry - that's not niche, and it's actually rather important.
I see this is an older video, and perhaps you learned to be more confident in your interests and assertive about your positions since then.

I guess pretty much the one and only critique is that when you say "not like other girls" that statement is usually meant to imply that men brainwashed her into doing that. But a "poem" like "she was music but he had no ears" isn't some sort of pro-man/anti-woman statement, it's just a female narcissist pretending to be a woman who is better than any man who could exist; who's also trying to tell herself that she's too good for her ex.
"Women are not metaphors" should also be better expressed as "women are not *only* metaphors." Even though these Instagram "poets" did it in a stupid and awkward way, it is still possible to write of a fictional woman who's a metaphor in a way that is actually artful. A hypothetical man can be a metaphor too --- think of the term "everyman."

I am glad that I was not alone in observing this phenomenon. While it is great that more people are getting exposed to poetry; therefore, gaining interest in poetry, it is vital to not sway from the art of writing beautiful poetry. Although it is worth noting that "beautiful" in this case is subjective. The move from complex imagery in poetry to simple and relatable poetry is what mainstream media seems to be heading.

Modern poets never learned the wisdom of Picasso: that you must know the rules like a pro before you can break them like an artist. Modern poets don't know any of the rules. They don't know jack shit about rhyme or meter. It's prose with line breaks.
This is why Ezra Pound, TS Eliot, and their contemporaries are fantastic, and everything after them (with a few exceptions) is terrible. They were the last generation to actually understand rhyme and meter, and to use them skillfully, unlike modern poets, who by and large have no stylistic skill. Add to this the prevailing nihilism of our age, and you get poetry that is banal, ugly, uninspired, and uninspiring.
The same is true of modern visual art. Very few artists today can draw, paint, or sculpt with any level of mastery, so their art is inherently limited. It also has the same problem with nihilism and uninspired, banal junk that results.
Music seems to be the only domain where technical skill is still emphasized.

Thanx 💯 I particularly liked The 🐝 Bee poem. It's an allegory about Bee~ Be~ Being. And what a convenient little Metaphor in the so called insignificant little "It" .
Because Art always finds a life of its own beyond the Creator of the art. My Wise Teacher told me " Once you put your creation out there before the world you can never correct it, it's too late, neither can you explain it. The writer never tells his readers "No, no, no! 😱That's not what I meant."😖 An Index augmented or appended perhaps; but novels don't come with commentaries from the same, or else that's a bàd novel.
The Audience are the True Owners of your Creation. The artist who wants to really own his art keeps it to himself away from the public.
    Where's the fun in that.
