I'm still amazed the police did not try to track those emails/messages from the very beginning. The fact that Cari would not pick up a phone but would reply to messages, should've been a HUGE red flag and a reason to check everyones phones and computers.

Yes, he was a lot smarter than the police who did a pretty pathetic job of checking their phones and computers etc. This poor woman was murdered and then her reputation destroyed, devastating for her family. The son is the only one bright enough to call her bluff and prove these emails were not coming from his mother.
I love watching murder docs, but it really can get heavy after a while.
My favourite thing about you is how you manage to keep it light and throw in your humor, without taking away from the seriousness of the cases or being disrespectful to the victims/ families.

I read an article that said it would have taken her at least 20 to 30 hours a week to do all the emails and texts. It's almost unbelievable that a person can become so obsessed with another person they would do all that was done to the point of shooting themselves and killing their pets in a fire. Millions of people use dating apps with no problem and every now and then there's a person who loses touch with reality.

Dave was very anti-commitment. But he was open about it. He hurt no one intentionally. Casual dating. Casual sex. Consensual. If you run into men or women like that, MOVE ON. If you want commitment, don’t force or guilt someone into it. Liz literally did all this just to ensnare him by guilt. It was pathetic. And an innocent person died. He looks so different now. I wonder if Dave can look back and clearly remember Cari the last time he saw her, and know that's the person she really was. Dave's got to feel stupid and feel a lot of remorse about that. Shanna murdered her physically and then proceeded to murder her reputation, her spiritual connection to the world for two years after.
It seems like Cari's son didn't buy the bull, and knew his mother very well. The one positive I took out of this was her son knew his mother would never leave him willingly like that. Shanna tried to destroy everyone that got in her way, and I'm assuming her kids are on that list, as well. What a psychopath.
They did say she had issues with Bipolar so maybe he just thought she was more off wack than he realized and went off the deep end. Liz was essentially gaslighting the shit out of everyone so they were confused as hell. Finally the son wised up and aent a security question, but Dave was the main target of the gaslighting.

One thing you left out, Shanna was also creeping around Amy Flora's neighborhood during the times she was trying to frame Amy. It was suspected that Shanna was plotting to kidnap and kill Amy if given the opportunity. And that is why the police told Dave to move in with Amy to help protect her.
That was risky without actually having police to secure them. She could hav gotten crazy and killed everyone. It was a good move but scary

Could she have done something to prevent the cops finding the IP address or the other thing you said? Mike is good, but I really could not keep this on straight. Lol

Cari’s son is one smart cookie. I feel so bad for her family, especially since that monster made her look like a psycho and tarnished her. Makes you wonder if Cari having mental health issues didn’t make it easier for people to believe that she would do those things. The stigma on mental health is horrible and needs to end.

They played her so bad telling her they needed to find some incriminating emails that Cari may have sent. I just imagine her sitting in front of that detective and her thinking ‘they bought it’ LOL
Kind of embarrassing that the police missed all that info from her phone the first time...
It's too much work when Liz wasn't considered a suspect at the time. Not only do they have to extract the data, they have to go through everything that was extracted manually since there's no way to automate a process like that. It would only make sense to do it after they became suspicious of her involvement.

It's difficult to imagine what Cari's family went through during the four-year charade orchestrated by Golyar. Because of the continued "correspondence", all of those involved believed that Cari was alive. 😔😢

Probably paid by direct debit from Cari's back account. As the body was never found, and she wasn't declared dead, the account remained open.
I’m guessing her family kept it paid in the hopes that it may actually be her…they probably didn’t want to give up that last shred of hope. I know I wouldn’t. Even more curious though, is how was she able to access Amy’s email to send herself those incriminating emails?

Not to mention her poor kids. Who not only were, no doubt, severely neglected... But had to deal with the loss of pets in a horrific tragedy.

I was married for 20 years before becoming a widow at the ripe old age of 39 and with our two teenage daughters. He had a massive coronary heart attack and died in his sleep at age 46! He had been in an extremely stressful job as a correctional officer in a maximum prison that had just gone through a weeks long riot. He was kind, compassionate, and loving. Never raised a finger towards myself or our daughters (he did make us learn how to properly protect ourselves), again I’ve struck gold. I’m married to another gentle yet strong in mind and body. I am one of 4 daughters who has NEVER been hit, pushed, or called names by their partner. My 3 sisters are in horrible relationship after relationship. They never saw our parents be physical towards one another, but verbally was a mess!
I’ve taught my daughters to demand and expect nothing but the best. Any off setting behaviors...bail out.

True!! I started reading about the case when i lost track what was happening while watching TC which never happened.
The incompetence of the police is mind boggling.
As soon as the strange texts and emails started coming from Cari after she went missing I knew Shanna had killed her. No other explanation makes sense. I hope for her son and the rest of her family Shanna either fesses up her location or she’s found so they can at least get that closure and put her to rest

The main piece of evidence that got her convicted was a picture that detectives found on her phone; she had taken a photo of Cari's decaying foot which had a tattoo on it. The tattoo was a Chinese symbol for "Mother". So sad.

@Mr. Moon No, but i do think it's more likely for a childless person to do something like that than a mother risking to lose her children but aparently that didn't stopp her in this case. Besides that, i don't like the idea that she was completely fine with killing the girlfriend even tho she also was a mom and she knew the son had to grow up without his mom around/without knowing where she is and if she is still alive/ thinking she just left him behind. As a mom myself, i can't Imagine myself to ever act like that on a man.

I can not BELIEVE the cops didn’t immediately realize that Cari was dead. The minute you said Cari abruptly broke up with Dave I knew she wasn’t the one doing all this. They should have been working with that theory immediately. Like. Are you kidding me.
Police officers sometimes go with the flow, other times they go with theories. The problem is that building a cass on a mere theory is difficult, so investigators can't always go that route.
This was 8 years ago, as far back as 35 years ago police knew to investigate people who claimed to be stalked. Granted, being active on social media wasn’t a thing back then, but it wouldn’t have taken much effort to establish whether or not it was Cari sending threats. If I were Cari’s family, I’d be chewing some police ass for eternity.
To be fair, with an average of only 4% of the crimes that police are involved with per year being felony crimes, they don't have the experience or training to even know the indicators of a serious crime. Not to mention most of them take the job to pad their pockets and/or to engage in pathological behavior with impunity.
I feel it took way too long for the police to start pointing fingers at Liz.
Great job telling this story. I saw a documentary on this a few years back, she was an evil lady. How cruel to communicate with her family giving them hope, and she killed animals in the fire. Prison is too good for her
