  • Muay Thai vs MMA matches have a lot to teach us. We never know who will win... Never underestimate an underdog. It's true that Muay Thai champions have the advantage in experience (literally hundreds of fights more) than their opponents here. But in a fight, great tactics and strategy can help overcome the odds. Here's 3 epic Muay Thai champion vs MMA fighter matches. What do you think of these 3 different outcomes?

I think 99% of the time, MMA fighters would lose... but we have big lessons here.

Wrestling beats Muay Thai in a sanctioned bout. No two ways about it. Wrestling wins. Muay Thai beats the above average MMA striker. The above average MMA striker "can" beat a wrestler.

WTF LAWRENCE?? You talked about MMA vs Muaythai without mentioning DJ vs Rodtang? Comon this clip is so bias based Bullshit. Me and my team report misleading on your clip. This is number one Bullshit.
Not to mentioned that most of the fight that Muaythai won MMA, the rules are favor Muaythai fighters. 90% of the time, if a real Muaythai fighter face against a real MMA fighter in a full contact fight with full ground game. Muaythai will eventually lose. Simple as that.
Even, we Thai people, know about this point. Stop being bias so much on one thing. In Mauythai fight we will have a Strategy called “Judo”, when u cant beat them on the feet, u just gotta keep clinching them and keep throwing them to the ground and they will eventually lose the stamina. Be Real.

rulesets make the fights. take an mma fighter and stick him in Lumpinee against ranked Lumpinee fighters under traditional Muay Thai rules and he doesn't stand a chance.. take a ranked Lumpinee fighter and stick him in the UFC octagon against ranked mixed-martial artists and he doesn't stand a chance. DJ vs Rodtang for example, that's not even traditional muay thai and Rodtang still had the advantage in the muay thai round but clearly didn't in the mma round, and Rodtang isn't even a particularly "muay thai" nak muay. he's not a clincher and he's not a big kicker, which are two of the most integral aspects of muay thai.
when people say "muay thai vs mma" it's pretty pointless without context, it's just an engagement driver. muay thai fighters are better at muay thai than mma fighters. mma fighters are better at mma. some mma fighters are better at K-1 kickboxing than some muay thai fighters and vice versa, especially the ones with backgrounds in kickboxing sports like Shootboxing (andre dida) and Kickboxing and TKD (korean zombie). I'd like to see an MMA fighter with a wrestling base try to fight Pajonsuk in Glory lol. you can guess how it'd go just like how if Pajonsuk put on a wrestling singlet and did the opposite he'd lose.
none of these fights are "mma fighter vs muay thai fighter" in the sense of two stylists using their arts to their fullest abilities because the rulesets don't allow for it therefore it's not really "muay thai vs mma", it's "some muay thai base fighters vs some mma base fighters in kickboxing". it all depends on rulesets.

Same boat. Wasn't sure which rules sets these were picked based on the title of the video. I think it's better if they picked a neutral ground for both fighters or those in similar/adjacent sports. For mma vs muay thai, maybe western boxing as it limited both of them tremendously (unless the muay thai fighter is the puncher style). mma vs combat jiu-jitsu would be a closer one to me as combat jj should be fine with getting a few hits unlike pure jj players. But totally agree rule sets help dicate the match.

MMA fighters are balanced well-rounded fighters, but they don't do well against specialists in their own fields, like boxing, kickboxers, wrestlers and etc. Obviously, the specialists who've spent years honing their craft would prevail against a jack of all trade.
However, there are some MMA fighters who are elite strikers like Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya. It would be interesting to see either the two of them up against a Muay Thai champion like Buakaw

Muay Thai is the best base for stand up (meaning it gives you the most realistic scenarios for stand up combat). I think ,however, it’s important to learn or spar other styles because there are some techniques ie: spin kicks, that you may not encounter as often strictly doing MT.

This is why each discipline has its own set of rules.
For instance, in mma, the downward elbow is forbidden while it is valid in MT, and in MT ground work is not allowed while it is an essential part of mma.
IMO if you really want a fair match, you should take away what's forbidden in both disciplines practiced by the fighters. It would be a no elbows, no ground wrestle fight, but in this case I think most MMA fighters would feel it is unfair.

How can you say that if some high level Muay Thai fighters often get beat by MMA fighters in their own game?? Not to mention 2 of the greatest Muay Thai fighters of all time having major trouble too, Baukaw nearly got beat by a very low level MMA fighter and Rodtang got whooped by Mighty Mouse.
Muay Thai uses a very specific base and range, it makes them static, they can't move back or laterally very well and can't cut angles well. Other stikers who vary ranges, base and angles more will give the Muay Thai guy lot of trouble.
There's a reason Muay Thai fighters don't make it to the UFC and Boxers/K1/Wrestlers/BJJ specialists consistently make it to the top.
With that said, Muay Thai fighters are very tough mentally, but the style has a lot of limitations.

If it was under MMA rules it would be closer to MMA vs Muay Thai because as there doesn’t seem to be anything in Muay Thai wouldn’t be allowed in MMA rules.
I personally think it would’ve been interesting to see how Muay Thai fighters would be able to handle grappling, and if they adapted and would then keep distance between the MMA fighter to prevent grappling.

A bit short, should have done 3 individual episodes breaking down the rounds and movements in greater depth (edit) i learn best from in depth breakdowns slowmos and correctly executed language to master the shapes and motions of every attack, eg. I was bullied at school so I watched a load of slowmos of veitnamese fighters (I've forgotten their martial arts name) but the breakdown of their strikes in slow motion led to me shattering the jaw of said bully in 8 places with 3 strikes and earned myself 2 weeks isolation.. the wonderful bliss of not being harassed by my year group afterwards on threats of further brutality added with my death metal obsession made people think I was possessed by demons and lethal. also having a hard chin also helps after taking two haymakers from someone who thought they were hard to then deliver one elbow that shattered his mandible and then move into groundwork to finish them off, no regret, no sympathy. These guys made my life hell for abot a decade and I ruined them in 60 seconds and got left the fuck alone, moral of the story, stamp on bullies and eradicate their ability to eat and breathe properly and you can live a normal life the shame is there wasn't enough of this in early youtube so I happened upon it by chance now if you wanna learn from the best you just gotta watch k1 fighters in half speed to see all the decisions they make throughout the fight

Edit - per MMA vs Muay Thai I trust in the old saying that styles makes fights. A conventional stand-up MMA fighter will have issues vs a constant leg kick used as a jab. Also, if a clinch is initiated then the barrage of knees and elbows will neutralize the overhands that MMA fighter rely upon (far too much in my opinion).
Having said that, a pure wrestler would eventually get the take down and smother a Muay Thai fighter. Styles make and ultimately decide fights.

I hate these type of videos. It favors the martial arts rather than the fight IQ of the fighter. Lerdsila has hundreds of Muay Thai fights. His experience and fight IQ is years ahead of the MMA fighter. The wins that MMA fighters accrue doesn’t translate to be an elite striker because those wins can come from submission. If prime Conor McGregor did a Muay Thai, that would be interesting fight to watch because most of his MMA wins came from striking.

MMA vs Muay Thai? Nah. No contest. There's a reason why nearly every MMA fighter at least dabbles in Muay Thai. Excluding individual fighters, Muay is absolutely lethal at its intended applications. Unless you're skilled enough to get a takedown immediately, it's just a matter of time before you're picked apart.
As always though, these fights aren't an accurate representation of the efficacy of one vs another. As the last fight showed, when there's rules involved, it'll hinder one or the other somehow, sooner or later. The same way I'd prefer a soldier over a sports fighter if killing is on the table, is the same way of pick a fighting style- based on the arena its being used in. I'm not going to necessarily pick a soldier in a prize fight, because rules will prevent a soldier from maximum efficacy.
If we only had a legit Mortal Kombat tournament. Then we'd see who is really the best.
