The continued search for South Africa's Toughest 4x4 Tracks | Cape Route Rally Part 2

- The Cape Route Rally returns with more 4x4 action. This time we have more mental rigs as we continue our search for the toughest 4x4 tracks in South Africa.
We start this episode in Worcester with the very first obstacle aptly named, the "wall of death". We take on Tierkloof at night, before heading inland. On the second day, we find ourselves on a private farm out near Laignsburg where we tackle nasty rock-crawling sections. The group takes on "Koos se klip" and "Tolla se klip" which has a gradient of over 40' of incline. On the third day, we head to the coast of Witsand where we let the rigs unleash their true power in the dunes. Dune drifting, hill climbs and drag races were on the cards for the day, but if you know the mad lads who joined us on this trip, you will know they made even the dunes nerve-wracking!
Finally, we exited the Western Cape and entered the Eastern Cape where the final challenge of the trip lay ahead. We drove up Krakeel Rivier Pass. One of the most beautiful 4x4 routes many of us have ever driven, it was not as technical as we hoped, just extremely steep, but we kept driving up and up and up the mountain. When we reached the top of the mountain peak, almost up and over the clouds. Truly one of the most people places to end part 2 of the Cape Route Rally, 4x4 Challenge edition!
A big shout-out to the event sponsors and supporters who helped us make this event possible.

Impressive!
on the farm where i occasionally hunt we have very high mountain with dangerous downhill high tough rock ledge then loose rocks to the bottom, if you come up from bottom the road turn left and right then you hit steep step rock ledge where the old cruiser tilt i would say 45 degrees , you cannot gain momentum because the front wheels bump into air at already dangerous angle if you spin the wheels it tends to slid sideways toward deep abyss. The modern type of land cruiser have a diff lock front and rear , my question, if i engage both front and rear will i be able to go round the bends on the very steep loose rock uphilll and what would you predict at the bump tilting more or less 45 degrees will it in your lots of experience climb the rock or spin en slide to side
thanks in advance!
Marius
Good day, thanks for the message.
The sharp corners you'll struggle to turn, especially with the front locker engaged. I would recommend engaging just the rear. Deflate your tires to 0.8bar or less if you have good tires and bead locks. If you get to the rock ledge, it's hard to say what could happen, each vehicle and scenario is different. Once you've lined up, slowly try and crawl up the rock ledge. If you're wheels spin, keep them spinning, but make sure it's slow and controlled. The friction will heat up the tires and aid with extra grip. If you start sliding sideways, let off the gas before it gets dangerous.
You can also try and line up to the rock ledge and then engage all the lockers, they might not engage immediately, as you say, they need some time to engage, but if you can slowly (really slowly) get the wheels to spin (controlled) on the rocks, it might give the system enough time to engage the diffs.
I hope this info helps!
@@DieterPey thanks,
if i engage only rear lock is there a risk of stripping the diff on the bends, the bends are not very sharp moderate bends
does the two axles lock finish and klaar is ok on loose ground but can damage on firm ground like tarr or sement?
@mariusvermaak6575 If it is loose surface like gravel, loose rocks, sand, you'll be fine. If it is tar and cement, then yes, you can damage your difflock.
If anyone’s looking for some KiffRad Pitt Vipers. Let me know 😎
There is no mechanical sympathy going on here 😆
Driver in the Grey FJ… definitely cant drive properly..always trying to “show off” and doesn’t listen to the spotters… attention seeking at any cost
we all got to start somewhere
