Most cities, in most countries have youth gangs, my city has them. The difference is they really only target rival gangs, it doesn’t spill out into the regular community as a whole..Do deaths occur? Yes, not often but they can happen in gang fights. Many communities try various programs to divert kids from making the choice to join a gang……some work, some don’t

This is how gangs like Killer Beez started.
You gotta realise that in the early 90's gangsta rap was used as a way to glorify going to jail. A lot of us grew up around Mongrel Mob or Black Power, so when we saw US gangsta rap we gravitated to it. It was slick n polished compared to the gumboots n dirty image of the older generation of Gz that you see in movies like Savage n Once Were Warriors.
Now we've got a more authentic blend of what we grew up with before and what we've adopted. A good example is Vigilante Tha Profit.

I'm with you Twano. I'm a white Kiwi woman & I cringe with embarrassment when NZ gangs imitate L A.Gangs. I lived in the US for 10 yrs & was married to a man whose history went back to the Black Panthers. This is embarrassing. No knowledge of how the L A gangs became who they are & why. In NZ we have free hospitals & Gvnt payments weekly for every person who is unemployed. You won't get rich off those payments but you can survive. They have no clue what it is like to live in a real Dog eat Dog environment. Just embarrassing. Thank you for the upload & reaction, you nailed it. Yup, its a parody without any soul or reason.

There’s a part 2 to this video Pam comes and interviews one of the crops when they’re older and he explains he was being sexually abused and found those boys and they took him in as his own and that’s how they became brothers

It's always funny to outsiders but shit was really real back then.
Gangs been around in NZ since the 60s. Crips and bloods established in the late 80s due to U.S Polynesian criminals being deported back to NZ. Polynesians in NZ often live in the ghettos and come from poor backgrounds and broken homes.
There's been a lot of bloodshed behind the gang banging here over the years. It may seem like a joke to you but I can guarantee that from what I've seen and lived, it's far from a joke.
One of my friends cousin from the U.S thought the same as you. He was mocking our gangs until one night he got carried away and fucked with the wrong ones and got beat so bad he ended up in hospital. He never said nothing else after that.
Not trying to glorify gangs but just saying that it's serious here. Some dudes are really about that life. I have a lot of friends and family who are dead and in jail behind this shit.

But coming forward to the last 10yrs, the gang scene has changed too, because of the 501 gangs and the influence of overseas gangs moving into NZ

This is the impact and lifestyle for any young Polynesian in nz trying to find his way in life after racism hit us from the Whitman.
Māori had our land stolen off of us, had our culture beaten out of us physically and physiologically, our women were raped so our bloodlines thinned right down, when shit like that happens from the government who can we turn to buy ourselves and each other. Our poly brothers and sisters migrate here (they are more welcome here than any white British man) to work and get nz economy up and running again than boom what do you know pigs are booting doors down arresting our poly brothers and sisters and sending em all on planes bacc home. Gangs exist because of the bullshit our government put us through. We get told not to speak out native tounges and get treated far worse than any other race here in nz.. gangs exist here in nz cos our cultural identities were stolen from us beaten out of us raped out of us and more, we have no culture to lean on no more that’s we lace up the chuck taylors and gang bang! In the 80s and 90s everywhere in the world has bloods and cripps in the 90s I was affiliated with the South Auckland Crips I lived in a place called papakura..it was the music and friends that influenced me and believe me there was huge fights no one had guns..now It's been over 25 years and I don't like gangs anymore it doesn't matter what gang it is..there in Auckland believe me when I say this it is multi cultural especially in Auckland city....you have all sorts.

Our first gangs go back to the 1840s when England deported criminals from prison to new zealand. Then we had milkbar gangs then our first patched gang was the king cobras in the 1950s and the hells angels opened the first club outside the states. We got currently like 8000 patched gang members in nz to a population of 5million. Nz is pretty fucked tho. Houses cost too much. Food costs too much. Government is racist and so is the justice system. We have highest rate of suicide. Domestic violence and drug and alcohol use. I love nz its a beautiful country but other than that its not really good anymore. I've lived here since the 1980s.
